The problem of identification of stiffness, mass and damping properties of linear structural systems, based on multiple sets of measurement data originating from static and dynamic tests is considered. A strategy, within the framework of Kalman filter based dynamic state estimation, is proposed to tackle this problem. The static tests consists of measurement of response of the structure to slowly moving loads, and to static loads whose magnitude are varied incrementally; the dynamic tests involve measurement of a few elements of the frequency response function (FRF) matrix. These measurements are taken to be contaminated by additive Gaussian noise. An artificial independent variable τ, that simultaneously parameterizes the point of application of the moving load, the magnitude of the incrementally varied static load and the driving frequency in the FRFs, is introduced. The state vector is taken to consist of system parameters to be identified. The fact that these parameters are independent of the variable τ is taken to constitute the set of ‘process’ equations. The measurement equations are derived based on the mechanics of the problem and, quantities, such as displacements and/or strains, are taken to be measured. A recursive algorithm that employs a linearization strategy based on Neumann’s expansion of structural static and dynamic stiffness matrices, and, which provides posterior estimates of the mean and covariance of the unknown system parameters, is developed. The satisfactory performance of the proposed approach is illustrated by considering the problem of the identification of the dynamic properties of an inhomogeneous beam and the axial rigidities of members of a truss structure.

The β-phase aging response of Cu–Al–Ni single crystal shape memory alloys (SMAs) within the temperature range of 473–573 K has been investigated. Alloys in austenitic (Cu–14.1Al–4Ni wt.%, alloy A) and martensitic (Cu–13.4Al–4Ni wt.%, alloy M) conditions at room temperature were considered. Aged samples show presence of β1′ and γ1′ martensites in both the alloys and formation of γ2 precipitates in the alloy A. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms of the aged samples show increase in transformation temperatures as well as transformation hysteresis with aging. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was conducted on both the alloys to ascertain the role of precipitates and martensitic transition on tan δ, which characterizes the damping behaviour of the material. With aging, a steady decrease in tan δ value was observed in both the alloys, which was attributed to the decrease in the number of interfaces per unit area with increasing aging temperature. Moreover, in alloy A, as the volume fraction of precipitate increases with aging, the movement of martensitic interfaces is restricted causing a decreased tan δ.

Ductility based design of reinforced concrete structures implicitly assumes certain damage under the action of a design basis earthquake. The damage undergone by a structure needs to be quantified, so as to assess the post-seismic reparability and functionality of the structure. The paper presents an analytical method of quantification and location of seismic damage, through system identification methods. It may be noted that soft ground storied buildings are the major casualties in any earthquake and hence the example structure is a soft or weak first storied one, whose seismic response and temporal variation of damage are computed using a non-linear dynamic analysis program (IDARC) and compared with a normal structure. Time period based damage identification model is used and suitably calibrated with classic damage models. Regenerated stiffness of the three degrees of freedom model (for the three storied frame) is used to locate the damage, both on-line as well as after the seismic event. Multi resolution analysis using wavelets is also used for localized damage identification for soft storey columns.

A generalized technique is proposed for modeling the effects of process variations on dynamic power by directly relating the variations in process parameters to variations in dynamic power of a digital circuit. The dynamic power of a 2-input NAND gate is characterized by mixed-mode simulations, to be used as a library element for 65mn gate length technology. The proposed methodology is demonstrated with a multiplier circuit built using the NAND gate library, by characterizing its dynamic power through Monte Carlo analysis. The statistical technique of Response. Surface Methodology (RSM) using Design of Experiments (DOE) and Least Squares Method (LSM), are employed to generate a "hybrid model" for gate power to account for simultaneous variations in multiple process parameters. We demonstrate that our hybrid model based statistical design approach results in considerable savings in the power budget of low power CMOS designs with an error of less than 1%, with significant reductions in uncertainty by atleast 6X on a normalized basis, against worst case design.

A hot rolled two-phase Ti-22Al-25Nb (at.%) alloy containing the orthorhombic (O) and beta(B2) phases was subjected to thermal treatment under different conditions. The experiment was aimed to examine the recrystallization response of the beta(B2) phase (static and dynamic) to microstructure and crystallographic texture evolution using scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD). Specimens rolled in the two-phase (O + beta(B2)) region consisted of highly deformed beta(B2) grains. The texture was close to that of the typical bcc deformation texture with a few additional texture components. A subsequent heat treatment of these rolled specimens in single beta(B2) phase region was characterized by static recrystallized beta(B2) grains with the final texture partly inherited from as-rolled material. In contrast, specimens rolled in the single beta(B2) region produced beta(B2) grains with the texture similar to that of completely dynamic recrystallized one. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The flapping equation for a rotating rigid helicopter blade is typically derived by considering (1)small flap angle, (2) small induced angle of attack and (3) linear aerodynamics. However, the use of nonlinear aerodynamics such as dynamic stall can make the assumptions of small angles suspect as shown in this paper. A general equation describing helicopter blade flap dynamics for large flap angle and large induced inflow angle of attack is derived. A semi-empirical dynamic stall aerodynamics model (ONERA model) is used. Numerical simulations are performed by solving the nonlinear flapping ordinary differential equation for steady state conditions and the validity of the small angle approximations are examined. It is shown that the small flapping assumption, and to a lesser extent, the small induced angle ofattack assumption, can lead to inaccurate predictions of the blade flap response in certain flight conditions for some rotors when nonlinear aerodynamics is considered. We study the elasticity, topological defects, and hydrodynamics of the recently discovered incommensurate smectic (AIC) phase, characterized by two collinear mass density waves of incommensurate spatial frequency. The low-energy long-wavelength excitations of the system can be described by a displacement field u(x) and a phason field w(x) associated, respectively, with collective and relative motion of the two constituent density waves. We formulate the elastic free energy in terms of these two variables and find that when w=0, its functional dependence on u is identical to that of a conventional smectic liquid crystal, while when u=0, its functional dependence on w is the same as that for the angle variable in a slightly anisotropic XY model. An arbitrariness in the definition of u and w allows a choice that eliminates all relevant couplings between them in the long-wavelength elastic energy. The topological defects of the system are dislocations with nonzero u and w components. We introduce a two-dimensional Burgers lattice for these dislocations, and compute the interaction between them. This has two parts: one arising from the u field that is short ranged and identical to the interaction between dislocations in an ordinary smectic liquid crystal, and one arising from the w field that is long ranged and identical to the logarithmic interaction between vortices in an XY model. The hydrodynamic modes of the AIC include first- and second-sound modes whose direction-dependent velocities are identical to those in ordinary smectics. The sound attenuations have a different direction dependence, however. The breakdown of hydrodynamics found in conventional smectic liquid crystals, with three of the five viscosities diverging as 1/? at small frequencies ?, occurs in these systems as well and is identical in all its details. In addition, there is a diffusive phason mode, not found in ordinary smectic liquid crystals, that leads to anomalously slow mechanical response analogous to that predicted in quasicrystals, but on a far more experimentally accessible time scale.

Explicit criteria for the optimum design of an untuned viscous dynamic vibration absorber are developed for the case of a viscously damped single degree of freedom springmass system. It is shown that for the particular case of an undamped main system, the results reduce to the classical ones obtained by using the concept of a fixed point on the response curve.

Results are reported of comparative measurements made in 14 HV (high-voltage) laboratories in ten different countries. The theory of the proposed methods of characterizing the dynamic behavior is given, and the parameters to be used are discussed. Comparative measurements made using 95 systems based on 53 dividers are analyzed. This analysis shows that many of the system now in use, even though they fulfil the basic response requirements of the standards, do not meet the accuracy requirements. Because no transfer measurements were made between laboratories, there is no way to detect similar errors in both the system under test and the reference system. Hence, the situation may be worse than reported. This has led to the recommendation that comparative measurements should be the main route for quantifying industrial impulse measuring systems

Mutation and/or dysfunction of signaling proteins in the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction pathway are frequently observed in various kinds of human cancer. Consistent with this fact, in the present study, we experimentally observe that the epidermal growth factor (EGF) induced activation profile of MAP kinase signaling is not straightforward dose-dependent in the PC3 prostate cancer cells. To find out what parameters and reactions in the pathway are involved in this departure from the normal dose-dependency, a model-based pathway analysis is performed. The pathway is mathematically modeled with 28 rate equations yielding those many ordinary differential equations (ODE) with kinetic rate constants that have been reported to take random values in the existing literature. This has led to us treating the ODE model of the pathways kinetics as a random differential equations (RDE) system in which the parameters are random variables. We show that our RDE model captures the uncertainty in the kinetic rate constants as seen in the behavior of the experimental data and more importantly, upon simulation, exhibits the abnormal EGF dose-dependency of the activation profile of MAP kinase signaling in PC3 prostate cancer cells. The most likely set of values of the kinetic rate constants obtained from fitting the RDE model into the experimental data is then used in a direct transcription based dynamic optimization method for computing the changes needed in these kinetic rate constant values for the restoration of the normal EGF dose response. The last computation identifies the parameters, i.e., the kinetic rate constants in the RDE model, that are the most sensitive to the change in the EGF dose response behavior in the PC3 prostate cancer cells. The reactions in which these most sensitive parameters participate emerge as candidate drug targets on the signaling pathway. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

A simple one dimensional inertial model is presented for transient response analysis of notched beams under impact, and extracting dynamic initiation toughness values. The model includes the effects of striker mass interactions, and contact deformations of the beam. Displacement time history of the striker mass is applied to the model as forcing function. The model is validated by comparison with the experimental investigation on ductile aluminium 6061 alloy and brittle polymer, PMMA.

Optimum design of dynamic fracture test rigs demands a thorough appreciation of beam vibration under impact. Analyses invariably presume rigid anvils, and neglect overhang effects. The beam response predicted analytically and numerically in this paper highlights the significant role of anvil rigidity and beam overhangs on the impact dynamics of three point bend (3PB) specimens.

A dynamic model of the COREX melter gasifier is developed to study the transient behavior of the furnace. The effect of pulse disturbance and step disturbance on the process performance has been studied. This study shows that the effect of pulse disturbance decays asymptotically. The step change brings the system to a new steady state after a delay of about 5 hours. The dynamic behavior of the melter gasifier with respect to a shutdown/blow-on condition and the effect of tapping are also studied. The results show that the time response of the melter gasifier is much less than that of a blast furnace.

We find that at low temperature water, large amplitude (similar to 60 degrees) rotational jumps propagate like a string, with the length of propagation increasing with lowering temperature. The strings are formed by mobile 5-coordinated water molecules which move like a Glarum defect (J. Chem. Phys., 1960, 33, 1371), causing water molecules on the path to change from 4-coordinated to 5-coordinated and again back to 4-coordinated water, and in the process cause the tagged water molecule to jump, by following essentially the Laage-Hynes mechanism (Science, 2006, 311, 832-835). The effects on relaxation of the propagating defect causing large amplitude jumps are manifested most dramatically in the mean square displacement (MSD) and also in the rotational time correlation function of the O-H bond of the molecule that is visited by the defect (transient transition to the 5-coordinated state). The MSD and the decay of rotational time correlation function, both remain quenched in the absence of any visit by the defect, as postulated by Glarum long time ago. We establish a direct connection between these propagating events and the known thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies in supercooled water. These strings are found largely in the regions that surround the relatively rigid domains of 4-coordinated water molecules. The propagating strings give rise to a noticeable dynamical heterogeneity, quantified here by a sharp rise in the peak of the four-point density response function, chi(4)(t). This dynamics heterogeneity is also responsible for the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation.

Size and strain rate effects are among several factors which play an important role in determining the response of nanostructures, such as their deformations, to the mechanical loadings. The mechanical deformations in nanostructure systems at finite temperatures are intrinsically dynamic processes. Most of the recent works in this context have been focused on nanowires [1, 2], but very little attention has been paid to such low dimensional nanostructures as quantum dots (QDs). In this contribution, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with an embedded atom potential method(EAM) are carried out to analyse the size and strain rate effects in the silicon (Si) QDs, as an example. We consider various geometries of QDs such as spherical, cylindrical and cubic. We choose Si QDs as an example due to their major applications in solar cells and biosensing. The analysis has also been focused on the variation in the deformation mechanisms with the size and strain rate for Si QD embedded in a matrix of SiO2 [3] (other cases include SiN and SiC matrices). It is observed that the mechanical properties are the functions of the QD size, shape and strain rate as it is in the case for nanowires [2]. We also present the comparative study resulted from the application of different EAM potentials in particular, the Stillinger-Weber (SW) potential, the Tersoff potentials and the environment-dependent interatomic potential (EDIP) [1]. Finally, based on the stabilized structural properties we compute electronic bandstructures of our nanostructures using an envelope function approach and its finite element implementation.
