This project assesses translating and subtitling humor in Italian and Spanish language films subtitled into English. Humor in film is problematic to translate when subtitling: visual humor may need no assistance to be delivered to a target audience, but verbal humor requires thorough analysis to be constructed effectively in the target language. To keep humor alive in target language translations, translators must understand the structure and function of humor. This project researches humor theory, translation and subtitling. It analyzes humor function through humor theory and applies this knowledge to translating audiovisual mediums. An understanding of joke structure and humor function can serve as a guide for translators to recognize, devise and evaluate equivalent translations of humor in film.

EmotiBlog is a corpus labelled with the homonymous annotation schema designed for detecting subjectivity in the new textual genres. Preliminary research demonstrated its relevance as a Machine Learning resource to detect opinionated data. In this paper we compare EmotiBlog with the JRC corpus in order to check the EmotiBlog robustness of annotation. For this research we concentrate on its coarse-grained labels. We carry out a deep ML experimentation also with the inclusion of lexical resources. The results obtained show a similarity with the ones obtained with the JRC demonstrating the EmotiBlog validity as a resource for the SA task.

In this paper we address two issues. The first one analyzes whether the performance of a text summarization method depends on the topic of a document. The second one is concerned with how certain linguistic properties of a text may affect the performance of a number of automatic text summarization methods. For this we consider semantic analysis methods, such as textual entailment and anaphora resolution, and we study how they are related to proper noun, pronoun and noun ratios calculated over original documents that are grouped into related topics. Given the obtained results, we can conclude that although our first hypothesis is not supported, since it has been found no evident relationship between the topic of a document and the performance of the methods employed, adapting summarization systems to the linguistic properties of input documents benefits the process of summarization.

A complete study of the importance of the pyrolysis temperature (up to 1500 °C) of a petroleum residue (ethylene tar) in the activation with KOH of the resultant pyrolysis products (covering from the own ethylene tar to pitches and well developed cokes) has been carried out. The trend in the porosity found for activated carbons is as follows: the pore volume increases with the pyrolysis temperature reaching a maximum value (1.39 cm3/g) at about 460 °C, just at the transition temperature between a fluid pitch and a solid coke. It is the pitch with highest mesophase content that develops the maximum porosity when activated with KOH. The amount of H2, CO and CO2 produced during the reaction of the mesophase pitch and coke with KOH has been quantified, and a trend as described for the pore volume was found with the pyrolysis temperature. Therefore, there is a relationship between the reactivity of the precursor with KOH and the porosity developed by the activated carbon. Since the reactions that produce H2 initiate at temperatures as low as 300 °C, it seems that KOH is modifying the conditions under which the pyrolysis occurs, and this fact is critical in the development of porosity.

(Table T1) Dissolved carbohydrate concentrations of interstitial waters from seven ODP Leg 201 sites
Resumo:
Total dissolved carbohydrates (DCHOs) were determined in interstitial waters collected at open-ocean and Peru margin sites cored during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 201. Concentrations of DCHOs ranged from 0 to ~1500 µM and showed no consistent trends between open-ocean and Peru margin sites either in the magnitude or direction of downhole interstitial water gradients. In contrast, relative DCHO concentrations (normalized to dissolved organic carbon concentrations) were higher in open-ocean vs. margin sediments. These trends are consistent with results from more shallow estuarine and nearshore continental margin sediments and may be related to changes in the overall controls on sediment organic matter remineralization with decreasing remineralization rates.

Uranium is a ductile metal and cannot be comminuted to a fine powder by any mechanical means such as crushing, milling or grinding. Uranium, however, reacts readily with hydrogen and forms UH3, which is a fine powder of less than 400 mesh screen size. The factors controlling the rats of the hydride formation are: (a) The surface area of the metal; (b) the temperature at which the reaction takes place; (c) the pressure of hydrogen. In order to increase the reaction area, one has to hydride small metal pieces rather than a single mass. The hydrogen reacts with uranium metal at temperatures as low as 100 deg to 1500 deg, and the reaction rate becomes quite rapid at approximately 225 deg C. The hydrogen for this purpose has to be of high purity and any small amount of oxygen in hydrogen delays the start of the reaction.
