The crystal structures of a pair of closely related macrocyclic cyano- and hydroxopentaaminecobalt(III) complexes, as their perchlorate salts, are reported. Although the two complexes, [Co(CN)(C11H27N5)](ClO4)2.H2O and [Co(OH)(C11H27N5)](ClO4)(2), exhibit similar conformations, significant differences in the Co-N bond lengths arise from the influence of the sixth ligand (cyano as opposed to hydroxo). The ensuing hydrogen-bonding patterns are also distinctly different. Disorder in the perchlorate anions was clearly resolved and this was rationalized on the basis of distinct hydrogen-bonding motifs involving the anion O atoms and the N-H and O-H donors.

An adaptation of the standard battery of Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Abilities (WJ-III) for Brazilian children and youth was investigated. The sample was composed of 1094 students (54 percent girls), ages 7-17, living in Sao Paulo state (91 percent). Items from Brazilian school books as well as from the WJ-III Spanish version (Bateria-R) were added to comprehension-knowledge tests. Brazilian words were adapted to the auditory tests according to syllabic division and stressed syllables. Items were examined through IRT and age differences through analysis of variance. Results indicated the need to remove items from all WJ-III subtests with the exception of the visual learning test. Analysis of Variance indicated significant age differences (p <= 0.001) for all tests. Thus, the importance of a Brazilian adaptation for the WJ-III was confirmed.

Antigen recognition by cytotoxic CD8 T cells is dependent upon a number of critical steps in MHC class I antigen processing including proteosomal cleavage, TAP transport into the endoplasmic reticulum, and MHC class 1 binding. Based on extensive experimental data relating to each of these steps there is now the capacity to model individual antigen processing steps with a high degree of accuracy. This paper demonstrates the potential to bring together models of individual antigen processing steps, for example proteosome cleavage, TAP transport, and MHC binding, to build highly informative models of functional pathways. In particular, we demonstrate how an artificial neural network model of TAP transport was used to mine a HLA-binding database so as to identify H LA-binding peptides transported by TAP. This integrated model of antigen processing provided the unique insight that HLA class I alleles apparently constitute two separate classes: those that are TAP-efficient for peptide loading (HLA-B27, -A3, and -A24) and those that are TAP-inefficient (HLA-A2, -B7, and -B8). Hence, using this integrated model we were able to generate novel hypotheses regarding antigen processing, and these hypotheses are now capable of being tested experimentally. This model confirms the feasibility of constructing a virtual immune system, whereby each additional step in antigen processing is incorporated into a single modular model. Accurate models of antigen processing have implications for the study of basic immunology as well as for the design of peptide-based vaccines and other immunotherapies. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Al-catechin/beta-cyclodextrin and Al-quercetin/beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) inclusion compounds were synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-vis, H-1 and C-13 NMR and TG and DTA analyses. Because quercetin is sparingly soluble in water, the stability constants of the Al-quercetin/beta-CD and Al-catechin/beta-CD compounds were determined by phase solubility studies. The A(L)-type diagrams indicated the formation of 1:1 inclusion compounds and allowed calculation of the stability constants. The thermodynamic parameters were obtained from the dependence of the stability constants on temperature and results indicated that the formation of the inclusion compounds is an enthalpically driven process. The thermal decomposition of the solid Al-quercetin/beta-CD and Al-catcchin/beta-CD inclusion compounds took place at different stages, compared with the respective precursors, proving that an inclusion complexation process really occurred. The solubilization of an europium (III) beta-diketonate chelate in aqueous medium and the changes in its photophysical properties upon its inclusion into an alpha-cyclodextrin hydrophobic cavity are described. The complex [Eu(tta)(3)center dot(H(2)O)(2)] (tta = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dione) was synthesized, characterized, and incorporated into the hydrophobic cavity by stirring in an alpha-cyclodextrin aqueous solution. The inclusion was confirmed by (1)H NMR, and the stoichiometry of association was obtained by the Job method. The maximum in the excitation spectrum of the alpha-CD inclusion compound in aqueous solution was shifted 28 nm compared with the maximum of non alpha-CD complex. The emission spectrum of the association is similar to that of the free solid complex and displays the characteristic (5)D(0) -> (7)F(0-4) Eu(3+) transitions.

The synthesis and structures of two new isostructural mononuclear [Ln(L)(NO(3))(H(2)O)(3)](NO(3))(2) complexes, with Ln = Tb (complex 1) and Eu (complex 2), which display high activity in the hydrolysis of the substrate 2,4-bis(dinitrophenyl)phosphate, are reported. These complexes displayed catalytic behavior similar to the mononuclear gadolinium complex [Gd(L)(NO(3))(H(2)O)(3)](NO(3))(2) previously reported by us (lnorg. Chem. 2008, 47, 2919-2921); one hydrolysis reaction in two stages where the diesterase and monoesterase activities could be monitored separately, with the first stage dependent on and the second independent of the complex concentration. Through potentiometric studies, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis, and determination of the kinetic behaviors of 1 and 2 in acetonitrile/water solution, the species present in solution could be identified and suggested a dinuclear species, with one hydroxo group, as the most prominent catalyst under mild conditions. The complexes show high activity (k(1)= 7 and 18 s(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively) and catalytic efficiency. Complexes 1 and 2 were found to be active toward the cleavage of plasmid DNA, and complete kinetic studies were carried out. Studies with a radical scavenger (dimethylsulfoxide) confirmed the hydrolytic action of 1 and 2 in the cleavage of DNA. Studies on the incubation of distamycin with plasmid DNA suggested that 1 and 2 are regio-specific, interacting with the minor groove of DNA. These complexes displayed luminescent properties. Complex 1 showed higher emission intensity than 2 due to a more efficient energy transfer between triplet and emission levels of terbium (T -> (5)D(4)), along with nonradiative deactivation mechanisms of the excited states of europium via multiphonon decays and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer state. Lifetime measurements of the (5)D(4) and (5)D(0) excited levels for 1 and 2, respectively, indicated the numbers of coordinated water molecules for the complexes.

Synthetic metalloporphyrins, in the presence of monooxygen donors, are known to mimetize various reactions of cytochrome P450 enzymes systems in the oxidation of drugs and natural products. The oxidation of piperine and piplartine by iodosylbenzene using iron(III) and manganese(III) porphyrins yielded mono- and dihydroxylated products, respectively. Piplartine showed to be a more reactive substrate towards the catalysts tested. The structures of the oxidation products were proposed based on electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry.

The goal of this paper is to study the global existence of small data solutions to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear wave equation u(tt) - a(t)(2) Delta u = u(t)(2) - a(t)(2)vertical bar del u vertical bar(2). In particular we are interested in statements for the 1D case. We will explain how the interplay between the increasing and oscillating behavior of the coefficient will influence global existence of small data solutions. Copyright c 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The pendent-arm macrocyclic hexaamine trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine (L) may coordinate in tetra-, penta- or hexadentate modes, depending on the metal ion and the synthetic procedure. We report here the crystal structures of two pseudo-octahedral cobalt(III) complexes of L, namely sodium trans-cyano(trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine)cobalt(III) triperchlorate, Na[Co(CN)(C13H30N6)](ClO4)(3) or Na{trans-[CoL(CN)]}(ClO4)(3), (I), where L is coordinated as a pentadentate ligand, and trans-dicyano(trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine) cobalt (III) trans-dicyano (trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diaminium)cobalt(III) tetraperchlorate tetrahydrate, [Co(CN)(2)(Cl4H32N6)][Co(CN)(2)(Cl4H30N6)](ClO4)(4)&BULL;-4H(2)O or trans-[CoL(CN)(2)]trans-[Co(H2L)(CN)(2)] (ClO4)(4)&BULL;-4H(2)O, (II), where the ligand binds in a tetradentate mode, with the remaining coordination sites being filled by C-bound cyano ligands. In (I), the secondary amine Co-N bond lengths lie within the range 1.944 (3)-1.969 (3) &ANGS;, while the trans influence of the cyano ligand lengthens the Co-N bond length of the coordinated primary amine [Co-N = 1.986 (3) &ANGS;]. The Co-CN bond length is 1.899 (3) &ANGS;. The complex cations in (11) are each located on centres of symmetry. The Co-N bond lengths in both cations are somewhat longer than in (I) and span a narrow range [1.972 (3)-1.982 (3) &ANGS;]. The two independent Co-CN bond lengths are similar [1.918 (4) and 1.926 (4) &ANGS;] but significantly longer than in the structure of (1), again a consequence of the trans influence of each cyano ligand.
