The data structure of an information system can significantly impact the ability of end users to efficiently and effectively retrieve the information they need. This research develops a methodology for evaluating, ex ante, the relative desirability of alternative data structures for end user queries. This research theorizes that the data structure that yields the lowest weighted average complexity for a representative sample of information requests is the most desirable data structure for end user queries. The theory was tested in an experiment that compared queries from two different relational database schemas. As theorized, end users querying the data structure associated with the less complex queries performed better Complexity was measured using three different Halstead metrics. Each of the three metrics provided excellent predictions of end user performance. This research supplies strong evidence that organizations can use complexity metrics to evaluate, ex ante, the desirability of alternate data structures. Organizations can use these evaluations to enhance the efficient and effective retrieval of information by creating data structures that minimize end user query complexity.

The C-13 NMR data of five iminopropadienones R-N=C=C=C=O as well as carbon suboxide, C3O2, have been examined theoretically and experimentally. The best theoretical results were obtained using the GIAO/B3LYP/6-31 +G**//MP2/6-31G* level of theory, which reproduces the chemical shifts of the iminopropadienone substituents extremely well while underestimating those of the cumulenic carbons by 5-10 ppm. The computationally faster GIAO/HF/6-31 + G**//B3LYP/6-31 G* level is also adequate. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the response of horses to confinement and isolation in a stable (indoor individual housing) for the first time using behavioral indices, heart rate, and salivary cortisol concentration. Six naive 2-year-old Australian Stock Horse fillies were examined at 4-hour intervals over 24 hours in an outdoor group paddock followed by 24 hours in indoor individual housing. Behavioral observations and scores and heart rates were recorded and saliva samples were taken at each interval. Energy saving in mobile hydraulic machinery, aimed to fuel consumption reduction, has been one of the principal interests of many researchers and OEMs in the last years. Many different solutions have been proposed and investigated in the literature in order to improve the fuel efficiency, from novel system architectures and strategies to control the system to hybrid solutions. This thesis deals with the energy analysis of a hydraulic system of a middle size excavator through mathematical tools. In order to conduct the analyses the multibody mathematical model of the hydraulic excavator under investigation will be developed and validated on the basis of experimental activities, both on test bench and on the field. The analyses will be carried out considering the typical working cycles of the excavators defined by the JCMAS standard. The simulations results will be analysed and discussed in detail in order to define different solutions for the energy saving in LS hydraulic systems. Among the proposed energy saving solutions, energy recovery systems seem to be very promising for fuel consumption reduction in mobile machinery. In this thesis a novel energy recovery system architecture will be proposed and described in detail. Its dimensioning procedure takes advantage of the dynamic programming algorithm and a prototype will be realized and tested on the excavator under investigation. Finally the energy saving proposed solutions will be compared referring to the standard machinery architecture and a novel hybrid excavator with an energy saving up to 11% will be presented.
