Recent experiments indicate that the spin-density waves (SDWs) in (TMTTF)(2)Br, (TMTSF)(2)PF6, and alpha-(BEDT-TTF)(2)MHg(SCN)(4) are highly unconventional and coexist with charge-density waves (CDWs). We present a microscopic theory of this unusual CDW-SDW coexistence. A complete understanding requires the explicit inclusion of strong Coulomb interactions, lattice discreteness, the anisotropic two-dimensional nature of the lattice, and the correct hand filling within the starting Hamiltonian. Double hydroxides of the formula, Ni1-xZn2x (OH)(2) (CO3)(x). nH(2)O (x = 0.1 to 0.25) having the same structure as that of alpha-nickel hydroxide have been synthesized by partial substitution of zinc for nickel. The hydroxide having the composition x = 0.25 exhibits prolonged stability in 6 M KOH. Pasted electrodes comprising this material are rechargeable with a stabilized reversible discharge capacity of 410 +/- 15 mAh g(-1) of nickel even under suboptimal conditions of electrode fabrication. This compares favorably with the capacity values achieved for beta-nickel hydroxide (221 mAh g(-1)', This work; 297 mAh g(-1), Delahaye-Vidal and Figlarz;(1) 456 mAh g(-1), theoretical). The ion conduction and thermal properties of composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) comprising Poly(ethylene) Glycol (PEG, mol wt. 2000), lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) and insulating Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticle fillers were studied by complex impedance analysis and DSC techniques. The average size of the nanoparticles was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Scherrer's equation and was found to be similar to 8 nm. The same was also determined by TEM imaging and found to be similar to 12 nm. The glass transition temperature T, as measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), showed a minimum at 5 mol% of narroparticles. Fractional crystallinity was determined using DSC. NMR was used to deter-mine crystallinity of a pure PEG sample, which was then used as the standard. Fractional crystallinity X. was the lowest for 5 mol% and beyond. The ionic conductivity of the composite polymer electrolyte containing 5 mol% Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles was found to be 1.82 x 10(-5) S/cm, while for the pristine one, it was 7.27 x 10(-7) S/cm at room temperature. As a function of nanoparticle content, conductivity was observed to go through two maxima, one at around 5 mol% and another shallower one at around 12 mol%. The temperature dependence of conductivity could be divided into two regions, one consistent with Arrhenius behaviour and the other with VTF. We conclude that the enhancement of ionic conductivity on the addition of Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles is a result of reduction in both the T, and the crystallinity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. This is the first report on the study carried out on high-pressure free-radical initiated oxidated copolymerization of styrene (STY) with alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) at various temperatures (45-65degreesC) at constant pressure (100 psi) and then at various pressures (50-300 psi) keeping the temperature (50degreesC) constant. The compositions of the copolyperoxides obtained from the H-1 NMT spectra were utilized to determine the reactivity ratios of the monomers. The reactivity ratios indicate that STY forms an ideal copolyperoxide with AMS and the copolyperoxide is richer in AMS. The effect of temperature and oxygen pressure in the reactivity ratios of the monomers was studied. The rates of copolymerization (R-p) were used to determine the overall activation energies (E-a) and activation volume (DeltaV(#)) of copolymerization. The unusually higher values of the DeltaV(#) may be due to the pressurizing fluid oxygen which itself is a reactant in the copolymerization, the side reactions, and the chain-transfer reactions occuring during copolymerizations.

Pd-coated Ni nanoparticles of 50 +/- 15 nm size are prepared by the polyol method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetry analysis. Surface coverage of Pd on Ni particles is less than a monolayer for 0.5 and 1 at% Pd-coated Ni. Quantitative conversion of nitrobenzene to aniline is observed over these Pd-coated Ni particles at 27degreesC under one atmospheric pressure of hydrogen. 0.5 and 1 at% Pd-coated Ni exhibits 10 times greater activity than that of typical colloidal palladium and platinum catalysts and 2.5 times higher activity than commercial 5 wt% Pd/C.

We report high-pressure Raman, infrared (IR), and optical-absorption spectra of alpha-ZrMo2O8 (trigonal) up to 38 GPa at room temperature. The spectroscopic studies are consistent with diffraction results that show that alpha-ZrMo2O8 transforms into delta-ZrMo2O8 (monoclinic) at about 1 GPa and the delta phase converts to the epsilon phase (trielinic) at about 2.0 GPa. Optical-absorption measurements give an estimate of the band gap of about 0.6 eV at the lowest pressure. Band-gap changes with pressure are confirmed with visual observations. ZrMo2O8 changes from transparent at 5 GPa to yellow at 10 GPa, red at 18 GPa, and at about 30 GPa it becomes opaque.

Organic nanoparticles consisting of single conjugated polymer chains were investigated as a function of degree of conjugation by means of single-molecule spectroscopy. The degree of conjugation was synthetically controlled. For highly conjugated chains, singlet excitons are efficiently funneled over nanometer distances to a small number of sites. In contrast, chains with less conjugation and a high number of saturated bonds do not exhibit energy funneling due to a highly disordered conformation.

Nanoembedded lead-tin alloys in aluminum matrix were synthesized by rapid solidification processing. These melt-spun aluminum alloys were then investigated using XRD, EDX and TEM. The XRD study reveals that the melt-spun samples contain elemental aluminum, lead and tin. The TEM analysis shows that embedded particles in aluminium matrix have a distinct two-phase contrast of lead and tin. The lead and tin in these nanoalloys exhibit an orientation relationship with the matrix aluminum and with each other. DSC studies were conducted to reveal the melting and solidification characteristics of these embedded nanoalloys. DSC thermograms exhibit features of multiple solidification exotherms on thermal cycling, which can be attributed to sequential melting and solidification of lead and tin in the respective alloys.

The design and synthesis of agents that can abstract zinc from their [CCXX] (C=cysteine; X=cysteine/histidine) boxes by thioldisulfide exchange-having as control, the redox parities of the core sulfur ligands of the reagent and the enzyme, has been illustrated, and their efficiency demonstrated by monitoring the inhibition of the transcription of calf thymus DNA by E. coli RNA polymerase, which harbors two zinc atoms in their [CCXX] boxes of which one is exchangeable. Maximum inhibition possible with removal of the exchangeable zinc was seen with redox-sulfanilamide-glutamate composite. In sharp contrast, normal chelating agents (EDTA, phenanthroline) even in a thousand fold excess showed only marginal inhibition, thus supporting an exchange mechanism for the metal removal. Single crystals of a-hopeite exhibiting high transparency were grown by single diffusion gel growth technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystal belongs to orthorhombic system. The values of several structural and physical parameters have been determined for the grown crystal. The optical absorption study reveals the transparency of the crystal and is noticed in the entire visible region and the cut-off wavelength was found to be 230 nm. The optical band gap found to be at 3.25 eV. The dependence of extinction co-efficient (k) and the refractive index (n) on the wavelength was also shown. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the crystal was studied as a function of frequency and temperature. Transport properties of the grown crystal have been studied from the Cole-Cole plot. Nanoparticle synthesis in a microemulsion route is typically controlled by changing the water to surfactant ratio, concentration of precursors, and/or concentration of micelles. The experiments carried out in this work with chloroauric acid and hydrazine hydrate as precursors in water/AOT-Brij30/isooctane microemulsions show that the reagent addition rate can also be used to tune the size of stable spherical gold nanoparticles to some extent. The particle size goes through a minimum with variation in feed addition rate. The increase in particle size with an increase in reaction temperature is in agreement with an earlier report. A population balance model is used to interpret the experimental findings. The reduced extent of nucleation at low feed addition rates and suppression of nucleation due to the finite rate of mixing at higher addition rates produce a minimum in particle size. The increase in particle size at higher reaction temperatures is explained through an increase in fusion efficiency of micelles which dissipates supersaturation; increase in solubility is shown to play an insignificant role. The moderate polydispersity of the synthesized particles is due to the continued nucleation and growth of particles. The polydispersity of micelle sizes by itself plays a minor role.

An improved Monte Carlo technique is presented in this work to simulate nanoparticle formation through a micellar route. The technique builds on the simulation technique proposed by Bandyopadhyaya et al. (Langmuir 2000, 16, 7139) which is general and rigorous but at the same time very computation intensive, so much so that nanoparticle formation in low occupancy systems cannot be simulated in reasonable time. In view of this, several strategies, rationalized by simple mathematical analyses, are proposed to accelerate Monte Carlo simulations. These are elimination of infructuous events, removal of excess reactant postreaction, and use of smaller micelle population a large number of times. Infructuous events include collision of an empty micelle with another empty one or with another one containing only one molecule or only a solid particle. These strategies are incorporated in a new simulation technique which divides the entire micelle population in four classes and shifts micelles from one class to other as the simulation proceeds. The simulation results, throughly tested using chi-square and other tests, show that the predictions of the improved technique remain unchanged, but with more than an order of magnitude decrease in computational effort for some of the simulations reported in the literature. A post priori validation scheme for the correctness of the simulation results has been utilized to propose a new simulation strategy to arrive at converged simulation results with near minimum computational effort.
