An horizon scan of biogeography

The opportunity to reflect broadly on the accomplishments, prospects, and reach of a field may present itself relatively infrequently. Each biennial meeting of the International Biogeography Society showcases ideas solicited and developed largely during the preceding year, by individuals or teams from across the breadth of the discipline. Here, we highlight challenges, developments, and opportunities in biogeography that were summarized at or emerge from that biennial synthesis. We note the realized and potential impact of rapid data accumulation in several fields, a Renaissance for inter-disciplinary research, the importance of recognizing the evolution-ecology continuum across spatial and temporal scales and at different taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional levels, and re-exploration of classical assumptions and hypotheses using new tools. However, advances are taxonomically and geographically biased, key theoretical frameworks await development of tools for handling, or strategies for simplifying, the biological complexity seen in empirical systems. Current threats to biodiversity require unprecedented integration of knowledge and development of predictive capacity which may enable biogeography to unite its descriptive and hypothetico-deductive arms and establish a greater role within and outside academia

Validation of the 34-item Supportive Care Needs Survey and 8-item Breast module French versions (SCNS-SF34-Fr and SCNS-BR8-Fr) in breast cancer patients.

This study aimed to assess the psychometric robustness of the French version of the Supportive Care Needs Survey and breast cancer (BC) module (SCNS-SF34-Fr and SCNS-BR8-Fr). Breast cancer patients were recruited in two hospitals (in Paris, France and Lausanne, Switzerland) either in ambulatory chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or surgery services. They were invited to complete the SCNS-SF34-Fr and SCNS-BR8-Fr as well as quality of life and patient satisfaction questionnaires. Three hundred and eighty-four (73% response rate) BC patients returned completed questionnaires. A five-factor model was confirmed for the SCNS-SF34-Fr with adequate goodness-of-fit indexes, although some items evidenced content redundancy, and a one-factor was identified for the SCNS-BR8-Fr. Internal consistency and test-retest estimates were satisfactory for most scales. The SCNS-SF34-Fr and SCNS-BR8-Fr scales demonstrated conceptual differences with the quality of life and satisfaction with care scales, highlighting the specific relevance of this assessment. Different levels of needs could be differentiated between groups of BC patients in terms of age and level of education (P < 0.001). The SCNS-SF34-Fr and SCNS-BR8-Fr present adequate psychometric properties despite some redundant items. These questionnaires allow for the crucial endeavour to design appropriate care services according to BC patients' characteristics.

Modelling hydrodynamics in the Rio Parana, Argentina : an evaluation and inter-comparison of reduced-complexity and physics based models applied to a large sand-bed river

Depth-averaged velocities and unit discharges within a 30 km reach of one of the world's largest rivers, the Rio Parana, Argentina, were simulated using three hydrodynamic models with different process representations: a reduced complexity (RC) model that neglects most of the physics governing fluid flow, a two-dimensional model based on the shallow water equations, and a three-dimensional model based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Row characteristics simulated using all three models were compared with data obtained by acoustic Doppler current profiler surveys at four cross sections within the study reach. This analysis demonstrates that, surprisingly, the performance of the RC model is generally equal to, and in some instances better than, that of the physics based models in terms of the statistical agreement between simulated and measured flow properties. In addition, in contrast to previous applications of RC models, the present study demonstrates that the RC model can successfully predict measured flow velocities. The strong performance of the RC model reflects, in part, the simplicity of the depth-averaged mean flow patterns within the study reach and the dominant role of channel-scale topographic features in controlling the flow dynamics. Moreover, the very low water surface slopes that typify large sand-bed rivers enable flow depths to be estimated reliably in the RC model using a simple fixed-lid planar water surface approximation. This approach overcomes a major problem encountered in the application of RC models in environments characterised by shallow flows and steep bed gradients. The RC model is four orders of magnitude faster than the physics based models when performing steady-state hydrodynamic calculations. However, the iterative nature of the RC model calculations implies a reduction in computational efficiency relative to some other RC models. A further implication of this is that, if used to simulate channel morphodynamics, the present RC model may offer only a marginal advantage in terms of computational efficiency over approaches based on the shallow water equations. These observations illustrate the trade off between model realism and efficiency that is a key consideration in RC modelling. Moreover, this outcome highlights a need to rethink the use of RC morphodynamic models in fluvial geomorphology and to move away from existing grid-based approaches, such as the popular cellular automata (CA) models, that remain essentially reductionist in nature. In the case of the world's largest sand-bed rivers, this might be achieved by implementing the RC model outlined here as one element within a hierarchical modelling framework that would enable computationally efficient simulation of the morphodynamics of large rivers over millennial time scales. Inter-relação entre caracteres de caupi de porte ereto e crescimento determinado

Foram estudados dez caracteres em 32 genótipos de caupi [Vigna unguiculata (L.)Walp.], com o objetivo de avaliar o grau de associação existente entre o rendimento de grãos e seus componentes. Oensaio foi conduzido no Campo Experimental da Embrapa-Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Meio-Norte, em Teresina, PI. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com seis repetições. Os dados foram coletados nas duas fileiras centrais, subtraídas das duas primeiras covas em cada extremidade. A floração inicial e o peso de 100 grãos apresentaram, com rendimento de grãos, as maiores correlações genéticas positivas e os maiores efeitos diretos em sentido favorável à seleção, e foram os caracteres mais importantes para o processo de seleção indireta. A seleção, praticada nos caracteres ângulo de inserção dos ramos laterais e número de grãos por vagem, não teve influência direta significativa sobre o rendimento de grãos.

Inter- and intraobserver variability of measurements with Pentacam HR® in patients with mild to moderate keratoconus

Purpose: To evaluate inter- and intraobserver variability of indices crucial for detection of keratoconus progression derived from the Pentacam HR® (high-resolution) tomographer (OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) in patients with mild to moderate keratoconus. Methods: Three repeated corneal topography measurements in the 25-picture mode by two independent observers were performed. The extent of variability across a large range of measurement parameters was analyzed including anterior and posterior corneal surface measurements, pachymetry values, corneal volume, anterior chamber volume and depth, and iridocorneal angle. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between and within each investigator was calculated to assess reproducibility and repeatability, respectively. Results: 31 eyes of 20 patients (mean age 31.6, SD ± 8.6) were included. Overall, the repeatability and reproducibility were excellent. The range of variability was reported by calculating the standard deviation of measurements. The detailed results are shown in Table 1. Conclusions: This study shows that the Pentacam HR® tomographer provides reliable measurements in patients with mild to moderate keratoconus. However, all parameters showed a certain range of variability. This should be taken into account when assessing keratoconus progression in order to distinguish true progression from variability in measurements. In addition, the excellent reproducibility suggests that the measurements can be reliably performed by different individuals from one visit to another.
