A obesidade infantil apresenta-se como uma epidemia que afeta milhares de crianças em todo o Mundo, e a publicidade tem sido apontada por inúmeros autores como sendo a principal causa por este problema global. Ao longo deste estudo, tivemos como objetivo analisar se existe algum efeito da publicidade na obesidade infantil, tendo em conta o estímulo ao consumo de grande variedade de alimentos com alta intensidade calórica, por via das estratégias de marketing. Para enquadrar este estudo, procuramos identificar o papel da publicidade na vida das crianças, nas atividades desenvolvidas nos tempos livres, a influência do estilo de vida nas atividades físicas, e por fim tentar perceber o papel que a publicidade, os tempos livres e o estilo de vida têm na obesidade infantil. A investigação apresenta-se como um estudo de caso exploratório qualitativo, onde foram utilizadas entrevistas estruturadas e não estruturadas individuais, bem como de grupo utilizando a técnica de Focus Grupo num infantário privado no concelho de Cascais. A amostra analisada contou com 12 crianças com idades compreendidas entre os 2 anos e os 5 anos, 10 encarregados de educação, entre eles 3 homens e 7 mulheres com idades compreendidas entre os 27 anos e os 45 anos. Foram incluídas ainda na amostra uma educadora de infância e a directora do infantário, o que permitiu estabelecer uma relação entre as diversas variáveis em estudo. Desta forma, foi possível chegar a resultados que nos indicaram em primeiro lugar, que as crianças nesta faixa etária estão expostas a um número muito elevado de mensagens publicitárias, e que a publicidade já faz parte integrante da sua vida. Percebemos ainda que alguns pais tentam controlar o número de horas de exposição à publicidade, na televisão, bem como os canais visualizados pelos filhos. No entanto não o conseguem, por eles estarem em contato com a publicidade através dos mais variados meios. Verificou-se deste modo que as crianças já conhecem muitas marcas, embalagens e as respectivas mascotes e que por isso solicitam a sua compra. A embalagem reforçou neste estudo a sua importância, uma vez que se apresenta em alguns casos como a grande atração no ponto de venda independentemente do tipo de produto. Relativamente aos tempos livres, existe um padrão de comportamentos onde as crianças praticam mais actividades no verão e aos fins-de-semana devido à disponibilidade dos pais, sendo que no restante período o sedentarismo é muito grande e que a exposição à televisão é muito acentuada. Os factores económicos, sociais e tecnológicos apresentam-se como os principais influenciadores relativamente ao estilo de vida. Como conclusão, consideramos que a obesidade nas crianças é multifacetada e que a publicidade não é o seu principal influenciador, é apenas mais um factor que poderá agravar a situação de muitas crianças quando não têm o devido acompanhamento familiar.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the impact of unilateral hearing loss on the quality of life of children. Focus group sessions were held for parents and children or adolescents with unilateral hearing loss to discuss their perceptions. Parents and children or adolescents completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory. Findings were presented depicting which domains of quality of life are most affected.

El presente proyecto de tesis “Priorización de indicadores de gestión relacionados al espacio de la satisfacción al cliente de las empresas proveedoras de servicios de telefonía móvil. Caso: Empresa Movistar” busca el planteamiento, consecución y construcción de una propuesta de un Plan de Calidad que busque la congruencia entre los indicadores de percepción y de gestión de una empresa de telefonía móvil. En primer lugar se abordarán las consideraciones preliminares como antecedentes, justificación de la investigación y objetivos de la misma para tener una visión global del proyecto planteado y se abordarán los conceptos teóricos necesarios que sustentarán la investigación práctica para la construcción de la propuesta final. Se describirá a la Organización y las necesidades con respecto al proyecto de investigación a través de los resultados obtenidos de los estudios de satisfacción reales de los 4 segmentos de clientes de Movistar y además los resultados de los Focus Group establecidos con el fin de brindar mayores lineamientos sobre las necesidades de los clientes frente al servicio de la organización. Finalmente se analizará la información obtenida para levantar los elementos de gestión de calidad y se realizará la construcción de la propuesta del Plan de Calidad para la empresa. La nueva propuesta construida muestra una visión integral y transversal de la organización que incluye tanto indicadores de percepción como de gestión, permitiendo a la Empresa actuar de forma oportuna, eficaz y precisa sobre las áreas o procesos que lo requieran con el fin de mejorar el Índice de Satisfacción al Cliente y fidelizar a sus clientes. El plan de calidad planteado en la presente tesis ha sido evaluado y aceptado por el responsable del ISC en la organización como una propuesta de medición y control global. Además ha sido presentado al Comité Ejecutivo, grupo de personas directivas responsables de tomar las decisiones estratégicas de la Empresa, y se ha tomado la iniciativa de aplicar el proyecto plasmado en la presente tesis para el año 2015.

Smooth flow of production in construction is hampered by disparity between individual trade teams' goals and the goals of stable production flow for the project as a whole. This is exacerbated by the difficulty of visualizing the flow of work in a construction project. While the addresses some of the issues in Building information modeling provides a powerful platform for visualizing work flow in control systems that also enable pull flow and deeper collaboration between teams on and off site. The requirements for implementation of a BIM-enabled pull flow construction management software system based on the Last Planner System™, called ‘KanBIM’, have been specified, and a set of functional mock-ups of the proposed system has been implemented and evaluated in a series of three focus group workshops. The requirements cover the areas of maintenance of work flow stability, enabling negotiation and commitment between teams, lean production planning with sophisticated pull flow control, and effective communication and visualization of flow. The evaluation results show that the system holds the potential to improve work flow and reduce waste by providing both process and product visualization at the work face.

In this paper we present results from an EU-funded project with the aim of examining the adaptation of e-learning to meet the needs of managers in different contexts. A set of design considerations is elucidated. These principles were derived from an analysis of five completed projects. This was followed by focus group discussion in the UK to test the principles derived.. These focus group were planned so as to gain greater clarity in the design of e-learning programmes aimed at UK-based SME leaders and managers. This paper starts by looking at the importance of SME management development for the economic wellbeing of the community and goes on to review research into issues in engaging managers in development activities. The results of a review of an earlier experimental programme (ESeN) are presented as it formed part of the process which led to the identification of theoretical design principles then tested in the focus groups. Finally, recommendations are presented for SME e-learning providers as well as areas for further research.

This paper explores student and teacher perspectives of challenges relating to the levels of competence in English of Chinese students studying overseas from the perspective of critical pedagogy. It draws on two complementary studies undertaken by colleagues at the University of Reading. The first—a research seminar attended by representatives from a wide range of UK universities—presents the views of teachers and administrators; the second draws on four case studies of the language learning of Chinese postgraduate students during their first year of study in the UK, and offers the student voice. Interview and focus group data highlight the limitations of current tests of English used as part of the requirements for university admission. In particular, university teachers expressed uncertainty about whether the acceptance of levels of written English which fall far short of native-speaker competence is an ill-advised lowering of standards or a necessary and pragmatic response to the realities of an otherwise uneven playing field. In spite of this ambivalence, there is evidence of a growing willingness on the part of university teachers and support staff to find solutions to the language issues facing Chinese students, some of which require a more strategic institutional approach, while others rely on greater flexibility on the part of individuals. Although the studies reported in this paper were based on British universities, the findings will also be of interest to those involved in tertiary education in other English-speaking countries which are currently attracting large numbers of Chinese students.

The aim of the article is to present and discuss a study in which Finnish, English and Swedish teachers and student teachers described the implications of being a teacher. It is cross-national and consists of multiple case studies. Data were collected through twenty-four focus group dialogues, and 110 teachers/student teachers participated in the study. According to the study, we have found that teachers and student teachers in all three countries promoted pupils’ development of critical thinking, which is another way of saying that they focused on ‘the attitudes and values’ aspect of citizenship education; however, this was most evident in the Finnish and the Swedish focus groups. In England there is a subject emphasis to the professional role, the three countries ranked the topics (the pupils; the subject; the organization; the society; teacher identity; parents) equally, in Finland the teacher role did not appear to be as post modern as in the two other countries.

Existing research investigating interactions between visual and oral sensory cues has tended to use model food systems. In contrast, this study compared product quality assessments of corn-fed and wheat-fed chicken products among persons recruited in Northern Ireland. Three approaches have been adopted to investigate the effect of colour upon consumer choice of chicken: sensory assessment under normal lighting; focus group discussion; and sensory assessment under controlled lighting conditions. Initial consumer sensory assessment indicated that wheat-fed chicken was perceived to be tenderer and to have a more intense flavour than that which was corn-fed. Qualitative enquiry discerned that this was because consumers perceived the yellow colour of corn-fed chicken negatively. Yellow-coloured corn-fed chicken was therefore again compared with wheat-fed chicken in terms of flavour, texture and overall liking with the flesh colour disguised by means of controlled lighting. Quality ratings for corn-fed chicken were more positive when the yellow flesh colour was disguised, with corn-fed chicken judged to be tenderer than wheat-fed chicken and more flavoursome. This study illustrates the importance of using a combination of methods to gain insight into interactions between different sensory modalities in consumer quality judgements and adds to previous research on the importance of colour upon consumer choice of real foods. Driven by new network and middleware technologies such as mobile broadband, near-field communication, and context awareness the so-called ambient lifestyle will foster innovative use cases in building automation, healthcare and agriculture. In the EU project Hydra1 highlevel security, trust and privacy concerns such as loss of control, profiling and surveillance are considered at the outset. At the end of this project the Hydra middleware development platform will have been designed so as to enable developers to realise secure ambient scenarios especially in the user domains of building automation, healthcare, and agriculture. This paper gives a short introduction to the Hydra project, its user domains and its approach to ensure security by design. Based on the results of a focus group analysis of the building automation domain typical threats are evaluated and their risks are assessed. Then, specific security requirements with respect to security, privacy, and trust are derived in order to incorporate them into the Hydra Security Meta Model. How concepts such as context security, semantic security, and virtualisation support the overall Hydra approach will be introduced and illustrated on the basis of a technical building automation scenario.

The role of users is an often-overlooked aspect of studies of innovation and diffusion. Using an actor-network theory (ANT) approach, four case studies examine the processes of implementing a piece of CAD (computer aided design) software, BSLink, in different organisations and describe the tailoring done by users to embed the software into working practices. This not only results in different practices of use at different locations, but also transforms BSLink itself into a proliferation of BSLinks-in-use. A focus group for BSLink users further reveals the gaps between different users' expectations and ways of using the software, and between different BSLinks-in-use. It also demonstrates the contradictory demands this places on its further development. The ANT-informed approach used treats both innovation and diffusion as processes of translation within networks. It also emphasises the political nature of innovation and implementation, and the efforts of various actors to delegate manoeuvres for increased influence onto technological artefacts.

This article explores the impact of wider social contact on the experience of Chinese postgraduate students of adaptation to life in the UK. Focus group and individual interviews were conducted with a group of 11 Chinese students on an MA programme at a university in southern England and individual interviews with three representatives of a local volunteer group (LVG) offering support to the Chinese students. Although it was perceived that the students’ support needs were not adequately met by the University, the additional support offered outside the University was unanimously valued and considered as enriching their cultural and linguistic experiences and meeting their expectations. However, frequent social contact with the LVG, whose members were mostly Christians, also had an impact on their values, religious beliefs and identities. In a discussion framed within the sociological perspective of proselytization or religious conversion and the broad framework of international education and globalization, the different responses to this contact are described in terms of believers, doubters, empathisers and commentators. Implications are considered for universities, people involved in providing social support for international students, and sponsors of international students.
Provider diversity in the English NHS: a study of recent developments in four local health economies

Objectives: The overall objective of the research was to assess the impact of provider diversity on quality and innovation in the English NHS. The aims were to map the extent of diverse provider activity, identify the differences in performance between Third Sector Organisations (TSOs), for-profit private enterprises, and incumbent organisations within the NHS, and the factors that affect the entry and growth of new private and TSOs. Methods: Case studies of four Local Health Economies (LHEs). Data included: semi-structured interviews with 48 managerial and clinical staff from NHS organizations and providers from the private and Third Sector; some documentary evidence; a focus group with service users; and routine data from the Care Quality Commission and Companies House. Data collection was mainly between November 2008 and November 2009. Results: Involvement of diverse providers in the NHS is limited. Commissioners’ local strategies influence degrees of diversity. Barriers to the entry for TSOs include lack of economies of scale in the bidding process. Private providers have greater concern to improve patient pathways and patient experience, whereas TSOs deliver quality improvements by using a more holistic approach and a greater degree of community involvement. Entry of new providers drives NHS Trusts to respond by making improvements. Information sharing diminishes as competition intensifies. Conclusions: There is scope to increase the participation of diverse providers in the NHS, but care must be taken not to damage public accountability, overall productivity, equity and NHS providers (especially acute hospitals, which are likely to remain in the NHS) in the process.
