Two crystals structures of a nonapeptide (anhydrous and hydrated) containing the amino acid residue alpha, alpha-di-n-butylglycyl, reveal a mixed 3(10)/alpha-helical conformation. Residues 1-7 adopt phi, psi values in the helical region, with Val(8) being appreciably distorted. The Dbg residue has phi, psi values of -40, -37 degrees and -46, -40 degrees in two crystals with the two butyl side chains mostly extended in each. Peptide molecules in the crystals pack into helical columns. The crystal parameters are C50H91N9O12, space group P2(1), with a = 9.789(1) Angstrom, b = 20.240(2) Angstrom, c = 15.998(3) Angstrom, beta = 103.27(1); Z = 2, R = 10.3% for 1945 data observed >3 sigma(F) and C50H91N9O12. 3H(2)O, space group P2(1), with a = 9.747(3) Angstrom, b = 21.002(8) Angstrom, c = 15.885(6) Angstrom, beta = 102.22(3)degrees, Z = 2, R = 13.6% for 2535 data observed >3 sigma(F). The observation of a helical conformation at Dbg suggests that the higher homologs in the alpha, alpha-dialkylated glycine series also have a tendency to stabilize peptide helices. Chitosan grafted poly(alkyl methacrylate)s (namely chitosan grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) (ChgPMMA), chitosan grafted poly(ethyl methacrylate)(ChgPEMA), chitosan grafted poly(butyl methacrylate) (ChgPBMA) and chitosan grafted poly(hexyl methacrylate) (ChgPHMA)) were synthesized and characterized by using FT-IR and C-13 NMR techniques. The adsorption batch experiments on these grafted copolymers were conducted by using an anionic sulfonated dye. Orange-G. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used to determine the kinetics of adsorption. The effect of grafting, effect of process variables and the effect of different sulfonated anionic dyes (Orange-C, Congo Red, Remazol Brill Blue R and Methyl Blue) on the adsorption kinetics was determined. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to fit the adsorption isotherms and from the values of correlation coefficients (R-2), it was observed that the experimental data fits very well to the Langmuir model. The values of the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents follow the order: ChgPMMA > ChgPEMA > ChgPBMA > ChgPHMA > chitosan. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dinuclear ((VVV)-V-IV) oxophenoxovanadates of general formula [V2O3L] have been synthesized in excellent yields by reacting bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with H3L in a 2:1 ratio in acetone under an N-2 atmosphere. Here L3- is the deprotonated form of 2,6-bis[{{(2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L1), 2,6-bis[{{(5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L2) 2,6-bis[ {{(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenoI (H3L3), 2,6-bis[{{(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L4) , 2,6-bis[{{(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L5), or 2,6-bis[{{(5-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N',N'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H3L6). In [V2O3L1], both the metal atoms have distorted octahedral geometry. The relative disposition of two terminal V=O groups in the complex is essentially cis. The O=V...V=O torsion angle is 24.6(2)degrees. The V-O-oxo-V and V-O-phenoxo-V angles are 117.5(4) and 93.4(3)degrees, respectively. The V...V bond distance is 3.173(5) Angstrom. X-ray crystallography, IR, UV-vis, and H-1 and V-51 NMR measurements show that the mixed-valence complexes contain two indistinguishable vanadium atoms (type 111). The thermal ellipsoids of O2, O4, C10, C14, and C15 also suggests a type III complex in the solid state. EPR spectra of solid complexes at 77 K display a single line indicating the localization of the odd electron (3d(xy)(1)). Valence localization at 77 K is also consistent with the V-51 hyperfine structure of the axial EPR spectra (3d(xy)(1) ground state) of the complexes in frozen (77 K) dichloromethane solution: S = 1/2, g(parallel to) similar to 1.94, g(perpendicular to) similar to 1.98, A(parallel to) similar to 166 x 10(-4) cm(-1), and A(perpendicular to) similar to 68 x 10(-4) cm(-1). In contrast isotropic room-temperature solution spectra of the family have 15 hyperfine lines (g(iso) similar to 1.974 and A(iso) similar to 50 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) revealing that the unpaired electron is delocalized between the metal centers. Crystal data for the [V2O3L1].CH2Cl2 complex are as follows: chemical formula, C32H43O6N4C12V2; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, C2/c; a = 18.461(4), b = 17.230(3), c = 13.700(3) Angstrom; beta = 117.88(3)degrees; Z = 8.

Formation of oxygen radicals during reduction of H2O2 or diperoxovanadate with vanadyl sulfate or ferrous sulfate was indicated by the 1:2:2:1 electron spin resonance (ESR) signals of the DMPO adduct typical of standard radical dotOH radical. Signals derived from diperoxovanadate remained unchanged in the presence of ethanol in contrast to those from H2O2. This gave the clue that they represent a different radical, possibly radical dotOV(O2)2+, formed on breaking a peroxo-bridge of diperoxovanadate complex. The above reaction mixtures evolved dioxygen or, when NADH was present, oxidized it rapidly which was accompanied by consumption of dioxygen. Operation of a cycle of peroxovanadates including this new radical is suggested to explain these redox activities both with vanadyl and ferrous sulfates. It can be triggered by ferrous ions released from cellular stores in the presence of catalytic amounts of peroxovanadates.

Pseudo-acid chlorides of five 4′-substituted o-benzoylbenzoic acids are converted into a mixture of dilactones with sodium iodide in acetone. The meso-isomer is always formed to a larger extent than the (±)-mixture. These results imply that the radicals involved are not planar.

The ultrasonic degradation of poly (styrene-co-methyl methacrylate) (SMMA), poly (styrene-co-ethyl methacrylate) (SEMA) and poly (styrene-co-butyl methacrylate) (SBMA) copolymers of different compositions was studied. The copolymers were synthesized and NMR spectroscopy was used to determine the composition, and the glass transition temperatures were determined by DSC. The reactivity ratios were determined by the Kelen-Tudos method and it indicated that the copolymers were random. The effect of solvent, temperature and copolymer composition on the ultrasonic degradation rate of these copolymers was investigated. A model based on continuous distribution kinetics was employed to study the degradation kinetics. The degradation rate coefficients of the copolymers decreased with an increase in the styrene content in the copolymer. At any particular copolymer composition the rate of degradation follows the order: SBMA >SEMA > SMMA. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the copolymers was carried in order to assess their thermal stability. The same order of degradation was observed for the thermal degradation of the copolymers as that observed for ultrasonic degradation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The kinetics of dimerization of 4-substituted- and unsubstituted o-benzoylbenzoyl chlorides, with iodide ion can be described by the expression, rate =k2[acid chloride][iodide]. The value for the reaction in dimethylformamide solution is –0·38. The entropy of activation for the reaction is –34·2 cal mol–1 K–1 and the activation energy is 10·7 kcal mol–1. These results have been interpreted as evidence for the formation of pseudo-iodide in the rate-determining step and its fast decomposition to radicals which combine to give a mixture of stereoisomeric dilactones.

Durability is central to the commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The incorporation of TiO2 with platinum (Pt) ameliorates both the stability and catalytic activity of cathodes in relation to pristine Pt cathodes currently being used in PEFCs. PEFC cathodes comprising carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 (Pt-TiO2/C) exhibit higher durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance, and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of the Pt-TiO2/C cathodes is 10% after 5000 test cycles as against 28% for Pt/C cathodes. These data are in conformity with the electrochemical surface area and impedance values. Pt-TiO2/C cathodes can withstand even 10,000 test cycles with nominal effect on their performance. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, and cross-sectional field-emission-scanning electron microscope studies on the catalytic electrodes reflect that incorporating TiO2 with Pt helps in mitigating the aggregation of Pt particles and protects the Nafion membrane against peroxide radicals formed during the cathodic reduction of oxygen. The first step in the molybdenum cofactor (Moco) biosynthesis pathway involves the conversion of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) to precursor Z by two proteins (MoaA and MoaC). MoaA belongs to the S-adenosylmethioninedependent radical enzyme superfamily and is believed to generate protein and/or substrate radicals by reductive cleavage of S-adenosylmethionine using an Fe-S cluster. MoaC has been suggested to catalyze the release of pyrophosphate and the formation of the cyclic phosphate of precursor Z. However, structural evidence showing the binding of a substrate-like molecule to MoaC is not available. Here, apo and GTP-bound crystal structures of MoaC from Thermus thermophilus HB8 are reported. Furthermore, isothermal titration calorimetry experiments have been carried out in order to obtain thermodynamic parameters for the protein-ligand interactions. In addition, molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out on the protein-ligand complex of known structure and on models of relevant complexes for which X-ray structures are not available. The biophysical, structural and MD results reveal the residues that are involved in substrate binding and help in speculating upon a possible mechanism.

A one pot synthesis of 6-alkylsalicylates and 6-alkyl-2,4- dihydroxybenzoates is described. Cycloaddition of 1-methoxycyclohexa-1,4- or 1,3-dienes with alkylpropiolic esters results in the regio-specific formation of 2-alkyl-6-methoxybenzoates. Thus, methyl 2-methoxy-6-methyl benzoate, methyl 2,4-dimethoxy-6-methylbenzoate, methyl 2,5-dimethoxy-6-methylbenzoate, methyl 2-methoxy-4,6-dimethylbenzoate, and ethyl 2-butyl-4,6-dimethoxybenzoate, have been prepared. By making use of this method, the synthesis of two dihydroisocoumarins namely (±)-mellein (12) and (±)-6-methoxy- mellein (14) is described. Employing a similar strategy, a novel route to 2,5-dialkylresorcinols has been developed. Stemphol (24b) and the antibiotic DB2073 (24d) have been synthesized.

A new soft-chemical transformation of layered perovskite oxides is described wherein K2O is sequentially extracted from the Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) phase, K2La2Ti3O10 (I), yielding novel anion-deficient KLa2Ti3O9.5 (II) and La2Ti3O9 (III). The transformation occurs in topochemical reactions of the R-P phase I with PPh4Br and PBu4Br (Ph = phenyl; Bu = n-butyl). The mechanism involves the elimination of KBr accompanied by decomposition of PR4+ (R = phenyl or n-butyl) that extracts oxygen from the titanate. Analysis of the organic products of decomposition reveals formation of Ph3PO, Ph3P, and Ph-Ph for R = phenyl, and Bu3PO, Bu3P along with butane, butene, and octane for R = butyl. The inorganic oxides II and III crystallize in tetragonal structures (II: P4/mmm, a = 3.8335(1) angstrom, c = 14.334(1) angstrom; III: /4/ mmm, a = 3.8565(2) angstrom, c = 24.645(2) angstrom) that are related to the parent R-P phase. II is isotypic with the Dion-Jacobson phase, RbSr2Nb3O10, while III is a unique layered oxide consisting of charge-neutral La2Ti3O9 anion-deficient perovskite sheets stacked one over the other without interlayer cations. Interestingly, both II and III convert back to the parent R-P phase in a reaction with KNO3. While transformations of the R-P phases to other related layered/three-dimensional perovskite oxides in ion-exchange/metathesis/dehydration/reduction reactions are known, the simultaneous and reversible extraction of both cations and anions in the conversions K2La2Ti3O10 reversible arrow KLa2Ti3O9.5 reversible arrow La2Ti3O9 is reported here for the first time.

We report data from two related assay systems (isolated enzyme assays and whole blood assays) that C-phycocyanin a biliprotein from Spirulina platensis is a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-a (COX-2) with a very low IC50 COX-2/IC50 COX-1 ratio (0.04). The extent of inhibition depends on the period of preincubation of phycocyanin with COX-2, but without any effect on the period of preincubation with COX-1. The IC50 value obtained for the inhibition of COX-2 by phycocyanin is much lower (180 nM) as compared to those of celecoxib (255 nM) and rofecoxib (401 nM), the well-known selective COX-2 inhibitors. In the human whole blood assay, phycocyanin very efficiently inhibited COX-2 with an IC50 value of 80 nM. Reduced phycocyanin and phycocyanobilin, the chromophore of phycocyanin are poor inhibitors of COX-2 without COX-2 selectivity. This suggests that apoprotein in phycocyanin plays a key role in the selective inhibition of COX-2. The present study points out that the hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic properties of phycocyanin reported in the literature may be due, in part, to its selective COX-2 inhibitory property, although its ability to efficiently scavenge free radicals and effectively inhibit lipid peroxidation may also be involved. The discrepancies between the non-interacting models and experimental results for conjugated systems is highlighted in this brief review. The interacting model hamiltonians correctly give the forbidden singlet state below the optical gap in polyenes and also explain both the nonvanishing optical gap in polyacetylenes and the vanishing optical gap in symmetric cyanine dyes. The negative spin densities in polyene radicals is also understood in terms of a correlated picture. The role of electron-electron interactions in other strongly correlated systems, such as polydiacetylene and mixed and segregated stack charge transfer solids, are also briefly discussed.

The Occurrence of the Norrish type I a-cleavage process in some thio compounds has been examined by using the MIND013 method and employing the configuration interaction. Results reveal that where the radiationless process is not efficient, thio compounds can undergo photodissociation into radicals in their lowest triplet and singlet excited states. The activation barriers in all these cases arise from an avoided crossing between two states of different symmetries. The calculations of activation barriers by the CNDO-CI and MINDO-CI procedures reveal that the MINDO-CI method leads to realistic values of the activation energies.
