Motivated by the growing interest in unmanned aerial system's applications in indoor and outdoor settings and the standardisation of visual sensors as vehicle payload. This work presents a collision avoidance approach based on omnidirectional cameras that does not require the estimation of range between two platforms to resolve a collision encounter. It will achieve a minimum separation between the two vehicles involved by maximising the view-angle given by the omnidirectional sensor. Only visual information is used to achieve avoidance under a bearing-only visual servoing approach. We provide theoretical problem formulation, as well as results from real flight using small quadrotors

A new proposal to have secure communications in a system is reported. The basis is the use of a synchronized digital chaotic systems, sending the information signal added to an initial chaos. The received signal is analyzed by another chaos generator located at the receiver and, by a logic boolean function of the chaotic and the received signals, the original information is recovered. One of the most important facts of this system is that the bandwidth needed by the system remain the same with and without chaos.

Sokolovskii’s method of characteristics is extended to provide analytical solutions for the ultimate load at the moment of plastic failure under plane-strain conditions of shallow strip foundations on weightless rigid-plastic media with a noncohesive power-law failure envelope. The formulation is made parametrically in terms of the instantaneous friction angle, and the key idea to obtain the bearing capacity is that information can be transmitted from the free surface (where external loads are known) to the contact plane of the foundation. The methodology can consider foundations adjacent to a slope, external surcharges at the free surface, and inclined loads (both on the slope and on the foundation). Sensitivity analyses illustrate the influence on bearing capacity of changes in the different geometrical parameters involved. An application example is presented and design plots are provided, and model predictions are compared with results of bearing capacity tests under low gravity.

Highlights of this paper: a method for calculating the ultimate bearing capacity at the tip of a pile is presented; ultimate bearing capacity is generalized for the modified Hoek–Brown criterion; perfect plasticity, isotropy, weightless rock media, without inertial forces, Meyerhof׳s hypothesis are considered; all the formulation can be programmed in a spreadsheet.

This research in Cordoba's mosque tower main objective was to analyze and characterize the foundations and the underlying soil, calculating the stability of the monument as well as the settlement and deformations performed, using traditional calculation methods and also by finite elements, and to determine differences between both, as well as the stability factor of the Minaret Tower. The works done to study the soil, were drill bores and dynamic penetration tests, classification of samples by size, Atterberg limits, physical and chemical analysis, showing the typical geotechnical composition of the Guadalquivir valley: an alluvial material composed by sand, gravels and silt clays. To study the foundations, inclined bore samples were extracted with 10-65º, showing calcarenite stone ashlars and lime concrete alternating with stone and brick masonry.

The malarial parasite dramatically alters its host cell by exporting and targeting proteins to specific locations within the erythrocyte. Little is known about the mechanisms by which the parasite is able to carry out this extraparasite transport. The fungal metabolite brefeldin A (BFA) has been used to study the secretory pathway in eukaryotes. BFA treatment of infected erythrocytes inhibits protein export and results in the accumulation of exported Plasmodium proteins into a compartment that is at the parasite periphery. Parasite proteins that are normally localized to the erythrocyte membrane, to nonmembrane bound inclusions in the erythrocyte cytoplasm, or to the parasitophorous vacuolar membrane accumulate in this BFA-induced compartment. A single BFA-induced compartment is detected per parasite and the various exported proteins colocalize to this compartment regardless of their final destinations. Parasite membrane proteins do not accumulate in this novel compartment, but accumulate in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), suggesting that the parasite has two secretory pathways. This alternate secretory pathway is established immediately after merozoite invasion and at least some dense granule proteins also use the alternate pathway. The BFA-induced compartment exhibits properties that are similar to the ER, but it is clearly distinct from the ER. We propose to call this new organelle the secondary ER of apicomplexa. This ER-like organelle is an early, if not the first, step in the export of Plasmodium proteins into the host erythrocyte.

Studies of mouse models of human cancer have established the existence of multiple tumor modifiers that influence parameters of cancer susceptibility such as tumor multiplicity, tumor size, or the probability of malignant progression. We have carried out an analysis of skin tumor susceptibility in interspecific Mus musculus/Mus spretus hybrid mice and have identified another seven loci showing either significant (six loci) or suggestive (one locus) linkage to tumor susceptibility or resistance. A specific search was carried out for skin tumor modifier loci associated with time of survival after development of a malignant tumor. A combination of resistance alleles at three markers [D6Mit15 (Skts12), D7Mit12 (Skts2), and D17Mit7 (Skts10)], all of which are close to or the same as loci associated with carcinoma incidence and/or papilloma multiplicity, is significantly associated with increased survival of mice with carcinomas, whereas the reverse combination of susceptibility alleles is significantly linked to early mortality caused by rapid carcinoma growth (χ2 = 25.22; P = 5.1 × 10−8). These data indicate that host genetic factors may be used to predict carcinoma growth rate and/or survival of individual backcross mice exposed to the same carcinogenic stimulus and suggest that mouse models may provide an approach to the identification of genetic modifiers of cancer survival in humans.

Two isoforms of human interleukin 15 (IL-15) exist. One isoform has a shorter putative signal peptide (21 amino acids) and its transcript shows a tissue distribution pattern that is distinct from that of the alternative IL-15 isoform with a 48-aa signal peptide. The 21-aa signal isoform is preferentially expressed in tissues such as testis and thymus. Experiments using different combinations of signal peptides and mature proteins (IL-2, IL-15, and green fluorescent protein) showed that the short signal peptide regulates the fate of the mature protein by controlling the intracellular trafficking to nonendoplasmic reticulum sites, whereas the long signal peptide both regulates the rate of protein translation and functions as a secretory signal peptide. As a consequence, the IL-15 associated with the short signal peptide is not secreted, but rather is stored intracellularly, appearing in the nucleus and cytoplasmic components. Such production of an intracellular lymphokine is not typical of other soluble interleukin systems, suggesting a biological function for IL-15 as an intracellular molecule.
