Myllykoski Paper Oy:n hiokkeen laadussa ja prosessivesien ominaisuuksissa tapahtuu vaihtelua ajan suhteen. Tämä käy ilmi useiden vuosien aikana kerätyistä laatuseurantatiedoista. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää hiokkeen ja kierto-vesien laatuun vaikuttavat tekijät ja kehittää laadunvaihtelua hillitseviä toimenpi-teitä. Työn kirjallisuusosassa pyrittiin löytämään tekijöitä, jotka voivat aiheuttaa valmiin hiokkeen laatuun vaihtelua. Lähtökohtaisesti laatuvaihteluita aiheuttavat tekijät jaettiin raaka-aine- tai prosessivaihteluksi. Työn kokeellisessa osassa selvitettiin eri hioke- ja prosessivesiominaisuuksien kehittymistä tarkastelemalla eri mittaussuureista kerättyjä aineistoja erilaisin aika-välein. Aluksi tarkasteltiin hiokkeen ja vesien ominaisuuksia viiden vuoden ajan-jaksolla, josta siirryttiin tarkastelemaan lyhyempiä aikavälejä. Käytetty mittausaineisto oli peräisin DW-tietovarastosta ja PHD-reaaliaikatietokannasta. Työn tuloksista kävi muun muassa ilmi, että painehiokkeen lujuusominaisuudet ovat hienoisesti alentuneet viimeisen viiden vuoden aikana. Muutos selittyy hiokkeen pitkäkuituosuuden ja kuitupuun keskimääräisen läpimitan alenemisella. Lisäksi valkaisemattomien hiokkeiden vaaleudet ovat alentuneet samallakun prosessivedet ovat muuttuneet likaisemmiksi. Kehitykseen on vaikuttanut vesikiertojen kasvanut sulkemisaste ja uusi peroksidivalkaisulaitos. Jatkotoimenpide-ehdotukset painottuvat pääosin vesiajotilanteiden hallintaan. Vesiajoaiheuttaa aina suuria muutoksia niin hiokkeen kuin myös kiertovesien laatuun.

Puhdastilojen suunnittelussa pyritään saamaan hallittu ja valvottu ilmanpuhtaus luokiteltuun tilaan.Luokittelu tapahtuu puhdastilastandardeilla, lisäksi lääkevalmisteita valmistettavassa tilassa GMP -säädösten mukaisin luokituksin. Puhdastilastandardi ISO 14644 käsittää seitsemän osaa, jossa on käsitelty puhdastilaa koskevia määräyksiä suunnittelusta käyttöön ja testaukseen. GMP-säädökset sisältävät yhdeksän kappaletta, joista kappale 3: 'Tilat ja laitteet' on keskeinen osa lääkeainevalmistuksen puhdastilasuunnittelua. Puhtaan ilman aikaansaamiseksi puhdastilaan merkittävimmät roolit ovat ilmanvaihdolla, puhdastilarakenteilla ja rakennusautomaatiolla. Ilma voidaan tuoda tilaan kolmella eri periaatteella. Ilmaa tuodaan tilaan yhdensuuntaisesti, turbulenttisesti tai sekavirtauksena HEPA -suodattimien kautta, joilla varmistetaan epäpuhtauksien korkea suodatusaste. Ilmapoistetaan rei'itettyjen, korotettujen lattioiden kautta tai tilan alaosassa olevien poistoilmasäleikköjen kautta, josta se johdetaan noin 75-90%:sti kierrätettynä takaisin tilaan. Lääketeollisuudessa rei'itettyjä, korotettuja lattioita eivoida käyttää kontaminaatiovaaran, vuoksi. Tilaan suunniteltuja olosuhteita ylläpidetään rakennusautomaation avulla ja monitorointijärjestelmällä valvotaan tilassa olevan ilman laatua. Kaikki GMP-luokituksen mukaiset puhdastilat tulee validoida. Validointiin kuuluu teknisten järjestelmien kvalifiointi ja koko prosessin validointi. Teknisten järjestel-mien kvalifiointi käsittää suunnitelmien tarkastuksen (DQ), asennus - ja käyttöönotto tarkastukset (IQ), toiminnan testauksen (OQ) ja suorituksen testauksen (PQ). Kvali-fiointi kuuluu yhtenä osa-alueena validointiin. Prosessin validointi on osa yrityksen laadunvarmistusta. Validoinnilla hankitaan dokumentoidut todisteet siitä, että tila tai prosessi todella täyttää annetut vaatimukset. Tässä työssä laadittiin esimerkinomainen kvalifiointisuunnitelma puhdastilan tekni-sille järjestelmille. Suunnitelma sisältää asennus- ja käyttöönoton mukaiset tarkastukset (IQ)ja toiminnan aikaiset testaukset (OQ).

The major task of policy makers and practitioners when confronted with a resource management problem is to decide on the potential solution(s) to adopt from a range of available options. However, this process is unlikely to be successful and cost effective without access to an independently verified and comprehensive available list of options. There is currently burgeoning interest in ecosystem services and quantitative assessments of their importance and value. Recognition of the value of ecosystem services to human well-being represents an increasingly important argument for protecting and restoring the natural environment, alongside the moral and ethical justifications for conservation. As well as understanding the benefits of ecosystem services, it is also important to synthesize the practical interventions that are capable of maintaining and/or enhancing these services. Apart from pest regulation, pollination, and global climate regulation, this type of exercise has attracted relatively little attention. Through a systematic consultation exercise, we identify a candidate list of 296 possible interventions across the main regulating services of air quality regulation, climate regulation, water flow regulation, erosion regulation, water purification and waste treatment, disease regulation, pest regulation, pollination and natural hazard regulation. The range of interventions differs greatly between habitats and services depending upon the ease of manipulation and the level of research intensity. Some interventions have the potential to deliver benefits across a range of regulating services, especially those that reduce soil loss and maintain forest cover. Synthesis and applications: Solution scanning is important for questioning existing knowledge and identifying the range of options available to researchers and practitioners, as well as serving as the necessary basis for assessing cost effectiveness and guiding implementation strategies. We recommend that it become a routine part of decision making in all environmental policy areas.

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää typenoksidien vähennysmahdollisuudet Stora Enson Varkauden tehtaiden sellutehtaalla ja voimalaitoksella. Tutkimuksessa käsiteltiin tehdasalueen suurimpia typenoksidien päästölähteitä: soodakattilaa, meesauunia, kuorikattilaa, öljykattilaa ja muovi-alumiinijakeen kaasutuslaitosta. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin typenoksidipäästöjen syntymekanismit ja erilaisiin polttotekniikoihin soveltuvat typenoksidien vähennystekniikat. Varkauden tehtaiden typenoksidien vuosipäästö vuonna 2001 oli 836 tonnia. Kansallinen lainsäädäntö, kansainväliset sopimukset sekä paras käytettävissä oleva tekniikka (BAT) huomioiden selvitettiin kuhunkin kohteeseen parhaiten soveltuvat ratkaisut. Tutkimuksen perusteella laadittiin toimenpideohjelma, joka määrittelee suositeltavan toteutusjärjestyksen typenoksidien vähennystoimenpiteille. Toimenpideohjelman tärkeimpinä kriteereinä pidettiin vuonna 2004 tulevan uuden ympäristöluvan arvioituja luparajoja sekä toimenpiteiden kustannustehokkuutta. Toteutusjärjestyksessä ensimmäiseksi valittiin koeajojakson järjestäminen ajon optimoimiseksi kiertopetikattilalla ja toiseksi meesauunin ajon optimointi jatkuvatoimisen NOx-analysaattorin avulla. Seuraaviksi toimenpiteiksi ehdotettiin vertikaali-ilmajärjestelmän käyttöönottoa soodakattilalla sekä SNCR-järjestelmän asennusta kuorikattilalle. Saavutettava NOx-vähennys tulisi olemaan 10 – 45 % ja hinta 30 – 3573 EUR vähennettyä NOx-tonnia kohti. Tutkimuksen osana Ilmatieteen laitoksella teetetyn typenoksidien leviämisselvityksen mukaan Stora Enson tehtaiden NOx-päästöjen vaikutus Varkauden ilmanlaatuun on hyvin pieni. Suurin osa NOx-päästöistä aiheutuu liikenteestä.

La intervención tiene por objeto reducir las conductas contaminantes y incentivar una conducta más respetuosa y el uso de tecnologías más eficientes. La Unión Europea cuenta con dos importantes mecanismos económicos para el control de emisiones a escala europea: la directiva sobre los impuestos energéticos, un instrumento de fiscalidad ambiental aprobado en 2003 que afecta el precio de los productos energéticos, y el sistema de comercio de los derechos de emisiones, introducido en 2005, que afecta directamente a la cantidad de emisiones de CO2. En 2011, la Comisión Europea propuso una nueva versión de la directiva sobre los impuestos energéticos. El objetivo principal de la propuesta es aumentar la eficacia del instrumento a través de una mayor presión fiscal sobre los productos energéticos y de coordinar este instrumento de fiscalidad medioambiental con el sistema de comercio de los derechos de emisiones, para establecer una señal de precio de CO2 coherente para todos los sectores. Sin embargo, en mayo de 2012 el Parlamento Europeo bloqueó la propuesta de la nueva versión del impuesto, y el proceso de actualización se detuvo. La preocupación principal parecía ser el efecto de dicha propuesta en la competitividad, en particular para los sectores que serían los más afectados dado el uso intensivo de los productos energéticos, como el sector del transporte. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar el efecto que la reforma de la directiva sobre los impuestos energéticos podría tener sobre el nivel de precios, en particular en los países de la Unión Europea donde esta reforma implicaría un aumento de los impuestos energéticos. Utilizando datos del proyecto “World Input-Output Database”, la principal conclusión es que el nuevo sistema de impuestos energéticos tendría un impacto muy bajo sobre los precios. Por lo tanto, dado que los precios no serían fuertemente afectados por la reforma, no habrá inconvenientes para la competitividad y implicaciones en términos de distribución, pero, por otro lado, este resultado también implica una baja capacidad de esta reforma para provocar cambios en el consumo y la producción hacia menos presiones ambientales.

We present a detailed evaluation of the seasonal performance of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system and the PSU/NCAR meteorological model coupled to a new Numerical Emission Model for Air Quality (MNEQA). The combined system simulates air quality at a fine resolution (3 km as horizontal resolution and 1 h as temporal resolution) in north-eastern Spain, where problems of ozone pollution are frequent. An extensive database compiled over two periods, from May to September 2009 and 2010, is used to evaluate meteorological simulations and chemical outputs. Our results indicate that the model accurately reproduces hourly and 1-h and 8-h maximum ozone surface concentrations measured at the air quality stations, as statistical values fall within the EPA and EU recommendations. However, to further improve forecast accuracy, three simple bias-adjustment techniques mean subtraction (MS), ratio adjustment (RA), and hybrid forecast (HF) based on 10 days of available comparisons are applied. The results show that the MS technique performed better than RA or HF, although all the bias-adjustment techniques significantly reduce the systematic errors in ozone forecasts.

Substances emitted into the atmosphere by human activities in urban and industrial areas cause environmental problems such as air quality degradation, respiratory diseases, climate change, global warming, and stratospheric ozone depletion. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major air pollutants, emitted largely by industry, transportation and households. Many VOCs are toxic, and some are considered to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic. A wide spectrum of VOCs is readily oxidized photocatalytically. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) over titanium dioxide may present a potential alternative to air treatment strategies currently in use, such as adsorption and thermal treatment, due to its advantageous activity under ambient conditions, although higher but still mild temperatures may also be applied. The objective of the present research was to disclose routes of chemical reactions, estimate the kinetics and the sensitivity of gas-phase PCO to reaction conditions in respect of air pollutants containing heteroatoms in their molecules. Deactivation of the photocatalyst and restoration of its activity was also taken under consideration to assess the practical possibility of the application of PCO to the treatment of air polluted with VOCs. UV-irradiated titanium dioxide was selected as a photocatalyst for its chemical inertness, non-toxic character and low cost. In the present work Degussa P25 TiO2 photocatalyst was mostly used. In transient studies platinized TiO2 was also studied. The experimental research into PCO of following VOCs was undertaken: - methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) as the basic oxygenated motor fuel additive and, thus, a major non-biodegradable pollutant of groundwater; - tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) as the primary product of MTBE hydrolysis and PCO; - ethyl mercaptan (ethanethiol) as one of the reduced sulphur pungent air pollutants in the pulp-and-paper industry; - methylamine (MA) and dimethylamine (DMA) as the amino compounds often emitted by various industries. The PCO of VOCs was studied using a continuous-flow mode. The PCO of MTBE and TBA was also studied by transient mode, in which carbon dioxide, water, and acetone were identified as the main gas-phase products. The volatile products of thermal catalytic oxidation (TCO) of MTBE included 2-methyl-1-propene (2-MP), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water; TBA decomposed to 2-MP and water. Continuous PCO of 4 TBA proceeded faster in humid air than dry air. MTBE oxidation, however, was less sensitive to humidity. The TiO2 catalyst was stable during continuous PCO of MTBE and TBA above 373 K, but gradually lost activity below 373 K; the catalyst could be regenerated by UV irradiation in the absence of gas-phase VOCs. Sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water were identified as ultimate products of PCO of ethanethiol. Acetic acid was identified as a photocatalytic oxidation by-product. The limits of ethanethiol concentration and temperature, at which the reactor performance was stable for indefinite time, were established. The apparent reaction kinetics appeared to be independent of the reaction temperature within the studied limits, 373 to 453 K. The catalyst was completely and irreversibly deactivated with ethanethiol TCO. Volatile PCO products of MA included ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and water. Formamide was observed among DMA PCO products together with others similar to the ones of MA. TCO for both substances resulted in the formation of ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water. No deactivation of the photocatalyst during the multiple long-run experiments was observed at the concentrations and temperatures used in the study. PCO of MA was also studied in the aqueous phase. Maximum efficiency was achieved in an alkaline media, where MA exhibited high fugitivity. Two mechanisms of aqueous PCO – decomposition to formate and ammonia, and oxidation of organic nitrogen directly to nitrite - lead ultimately to carbon dioxide, water, ammonia and nitrate: formate and nitrite were observed as intermediates. A part of the ammonia formed in the reaction was oxidized to nitrite and nitrate. This finding helped in better understanding of the gasphase PCO pathways. The PCO kinetic data for VOCs fitted well to the monomolecular Langmuir- Hinshelwood (L-H) model, whereas TCO kinetic behaviour matched the first order process for volatile amines and the L-H model for others. It should be noted that both LH and the first order equations were only the data fit, not the real description of the reaction kinetics. The dependence of the kinetic constants on temperature was established in the form of an Arrhenius equation.

Two speed management policies were implemented in the metropolitan area of Barcelona aimed at reducing air pollution concentration levels. In 2008, the maximum speed limit was reduced to 80 km/h and, in 2009, a variable speed system was introduced on some metropolitan motorways. This paper evaluates whether such policies have been successful in promoting cleaner air, not only in terms of mean pollutant levels but also during high and low pollution episodes. We use a quantile regression approach for fixed effect panel data. We find that the variable speed system improves air quality with regard to the two pollutants considered here, being most effective when nitrogen oxide levels are not too low and when particulate matter concentrations are below extremely high levels. However, reducing the maximum speed limit from 120/100 km/h to 80 km/h has no effect – or even a slightly increasing effect –on the two pollutants, depending on the pollution scenario. In the last two decades, the use of oxygenated fuels, like methanol and ethanol, pure or in mixture with gasoline, has been growing due to benefits introduced into the air quality. In Brasil, the fraction of light duty vehicles powered by pure hydrated ethanol is estimated at about 4 million, while the remaining vehicles actually utilize a mixture (22:78 v/v) of ethanol:gasoline. As a consequence, there's a need for the availability of methods that can provide the evaluation of possible impacts of alcohol emissions in the formation of chemical species in the atmosphere, as ozone, aldehydes, carboxylic acids and so on. In this paper, methanol and ethanol are discussed in their general aspects, as well as their atmospheric sources, chemical reactivity and available methods of analysis.

The presence of low carbonyl compounds (C1-C4) and glutaraldehyde was observed in 14 work-locations in São Paulo city, Brazil, during January to July 1997 period. The quantification of other carbonyls was not possible due to a sampling artifact caused probably by undesirable reactions between the ambient ozone and the organic substract of C18 cartridge used to collect carbonyls. High indoor concentrations, compared to outdoor levels, were observed for all compounds. Formaldehyde was the most abundant species (29 ppb) followed by acetone and acetaldehyde (25 and 17 ppb) with a small contribution of propanal, crotonaldehyde and C4 isomers (0.7 to 1.5 ppb) when related to the total indoor carbonyls level. Glutaraldehyde was observed only in two different occupational locations in a hospital at high concentrations (121 ppb). In general, high individual carbonyl levels as well as total carbonyls levels found in several locations indicated an unpropitious air quality for the occupants of these non-industrial sites.

This work aims at the study of the air quality determination regarding the total suspended particles (TSP) and the associated metals in the counties of Charqueadas and Sapucaia do Sul at the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The TSP samples were collected using high volume samplers and the analysis of the metallic elements was accomplished through ICP-AES. The results revealed that the TSP concentrations, found in the two studied regions, have exceded the current air quality patterns established by the Brazilian Legislation. They also revealed high levels of several of the elements being attributed to the presence of anthropogenic sources. The correlation between meteorological data (speed and wind direction) and TSP concentrations were significant and revealed strong influence in particle dispersion.

The scope of this study involved the evaluation of the concentration of some volatile organic compounds in the internal environmental air of a naval shipyard in the State of Rio de Janeiro, during painting activities in enclosed, semi-enclosed and open areas. Xylene was the volatile compound found in greatest abundance (25.20 to 191.66 ppm) in the locations researched. Benzene in the air, which is a carcinogenic substance, attained levels of 3.34 ppm in semi-enclosed environments and the highest levels of toluene, xylene and n-butanol were found in the enclosed space of the ship. Results obtained highlight the need to establish air quality control programs in these internal areas, in order to safeguard the health of the workers.

Advanced industrialized nations have experienced severe pollution problems over the past forty years, caused mainly by carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide emissions from automobiles. Catalyst technology has played a major part in minimizing these emissions as required by even more restrictive laws. The catalyst has been optimized over the years to meet the requirements of high activity and long life. The oxidation of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide are in advanced development stage while that of NOx catalysts is far less advanced. In the future, catalyst technology is expected to contribute to overcome the challenges to get a cleaner air.

During the last two decades there has been increasing concern within the scientific community related to the effects of indoor air quality on health. Changes in building design devised to improve energy efficiency and new synthetic building materials have contributed to increase pollutant concentrations. These factors have generated poor air quality and caused the development of a lot of symptoms known as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). In Brazil, there are few studies in this area, collected in this review to support researches and awareness of the need to adopt preventive measures to reach a better quality for the Indoor Environment.
