The influence of band bending and polarization on the valence band offset measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is discussed, and a modification method based on a modified self-consistent calculation is proposed to eliminate the influence and thus increasing the precision of XPS. Considering the spontaneous polarization at the surfaces and interfaces and the different positions of Fermi levels at the surfaces, we compare the energy band structures of Al/Ga-polar AlN/GaN and N-polar GaN/AlN heterojunctions, and give corrections to the XPS-measured valence band offsets. Other AlN/GaN heterojunctions and the piezoelectric polarization are also introduced and discussed in this paper.

The surface roughness of polished InP (001) wafers were examined by x-ray reflectivity and crystal truncation rod (CTR) measurements. The root-mean-square roughness and the lateral correlation scale were obtained by both methods. The scattering intensities in the scans transverse to the specular reflection rod were found to contain two components. A simple surface model of surface faceting is proposed to explain the experimental data. The sensitivities of the two methods to the surface structure and the role of the resolution functions in the CTR measurements are discussed.

In this work we investigate the lateral periodicity of symmetrically strained (GaIn)As/GaAs/Ga(PAs)/GaAs superlattices by means of X-ray scattering techniques. The multilayers were grown by metalorganic Vapour phase epitaxy on (001)GaAs substrates, which were intentionally off-oriented towards the [011]-direction. The substrate off-orientation and the strain distribution was found to affect the structural properties of the superlattices inducing the generation of laterally ordered macrosteps. Several high-resolution triple-crystal reciprocal space maps, which were recorded for different azimuth angles in the vicinity of the (004) Bragg diffraction and contour maps of the specular reflected beam collected in the vicinity of the (000) reciprocal lattice point, are reported and discussed. The reciprocal space maps clearly show a two-dimensional periodicity of the X-ray peak intensity distribution which can be ascribed to the superlattice periodicity in the direction of the surface normal and to a lateral periodicity in a crystallographic direction coinciding with the miscut orientation. The distribution and correlation of the vertical as well as of the lateral interface roughness was investigated by specular reflectivity and diffuse scattering measurements. Our results show that the morphology of the roughness is influenced by the off-orientation angle and can be described by a 2-dimensional waviness.

ErSi1.7 layers with high crystalline quality (chi(min) of Er is 1.5%) have been formed by 90 keV Er ion implantation to a dose of 1.6X10(17)/cm(2) at 450 degrees C using channeled implantation. The perpendicular and parallel elastic strain e(perpendicular to)=-0.94%+/-0.02% and e(parallel to)=1.24%+/-0.08% of the heteroepitaxial erbium silicide layers have been measured with symmetric and asymmetric x-ray reflections using a double-crystal x-ray diffractometer. The deduced tetragonal distortion e(T(XRD))=e(parallel to)-e(perpendicular to)=2.18%+/-0.10%, which is consistent with the value e(T(RBS))2.14+/-0.17% deduced from the Rutherford backscattering and channeling measurements. The quasipseudomorphic growth of the epilayer and the stiffness along a and c axes of the epilayer deduced from the x-ray diffraction are discussed.

The structural evolution of an ice-quenched high-density polyethylene (HDPE) subjected to uniaxial tensile deformation at elevated temperatures was examined as a function of the imposed strains by means of combined synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. The data show that when stretching an isotropic sample with the spherulitic structure, intralamellar slipping of crystalline blocks was activated at small deformations, followed by a stress-induced fragmentation and recrystallization process yielding lamellar crystallites with their normal parallel to the stretching direction. Stretching of an isothermally crystallized HDPE sample at 120 degrees C exhibited changes of the SAXS diagram with strain similar to that observed for quenched HDPE elongated at room temperature, implying that the thermal stability of the crystal blocks composing the lamellae is only dependent on the crystallization temperature.

New titanium complexes with two nonsymmetric bidentate beta-enaminoketonato (N,O) ligands (4a-e), [(Ph)NC(R-2)C(H)C(R-1)O](2)TiCl2, have been synthesized. X-ray crystal structure reveals that complex 4a has a C-2-symmetric conformation with a distorted octahedral geometry around the titanium center. With modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, complexes 4a-e are active catalysts for ethylene polymerization at room temperature, producing high molecular weight polyethylenes bearing linear structures. The 4a,b/MMAO catalyst systems exhibit the characteristics of a quasi-living polymerization of ethylene, producing polyethylenes with narrow molecular weight distributions. Moreover, the 4a-d/MMAO catalyst systems are also capable of promoting the quasi-living copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene at room temperature, yielding high molecular weight alternating copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions. The quasi-living nature of the catalysts allows the synthesis of new A-B polyethylene-block-poly(ethylene-conorbornene) diblock copolymer.

Reactions of freshly prepared M(OH)(2-2x)(CO3)(x) (.) yH(2)O (M = Mn, Zn) and 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) with succinic acid (H2L) or famaric acid (H2L') in CH3OH-H2O afforded [Mn(H2O)(4)(bpy)]L (.) 4H(2)O, 1, [Mn(H2O)(4)(bpy)]L' (.) 4H(2)O, 2 and [Zn(H2O)(4)(bpy)]L (.) 4H(2)O, 3. The three coordination polymers are isostructural and consist of (1)(infinity)[M(H2O)(4)(bpy)(2/2)](2+) cationic chains, crystal H2O molecules and dicarboxylate anions (succinate or fumarate anions). Within the chains, the metal atoms are each octahedrally coordinated by four aqua oxygen atoms and two pyridyl nitrogen atoms from two 4,4'-bipyridine ligands. The crystal H2O molecules are hydrogen bonded to dicarboxylate anions to form ribbon-like anionic chains. The cationic and anionic chains are interconnected via hyqrogen bonds to generate a 3D network. X-Ray photoelectron spectra of some bioinorganic complexes of La, Ce, PT, Nd, Sm and Eu with N-acetylalanine have been measured and the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 main peaks and their satellites have also been assigned. ne spin-orbit splitting between the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 core-level of the rare earth ion in these complexes becomes slightly larger than that of the free rare earth atom due to the effect of the crystal field. The satellite for the 3d main peaks of La in the solid state complex are in higher binding energy region and may be attributable to the L --> 4f charge-transfer shake-up process. The satellites for the 3d main peaks of Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are in the lower binding energy region and may be attributable to the 4f --> L charge-transfer shake-down process.
