A preliminary report on the manganese nodule field southwest of Western Australia published in this Journal recently (Frakes, Exon and Granath, 1977) quoted chemical analyses which were carried out on air-dried material. Significantly higher metal values have been recorded in some later analyses done on nodules dried at 105°C. Tests have shown that the ground, air-dried material retains considerable moisture, which accounts for the higher metal values of the later analyses. The average water content (after drying at 105°C) has been determined at 16 percent. The relevant chemical data now available on this material are summarised in the accompanying table: in this table metal values (by atomic absorption spectrophotometry) have been recalculated assuming a moisture content of 16 percent.

Horizons of several types of Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous manganese nodules occur locally in sequences of radiolarian cherts within the Nicoya Ophiolite Complex (NW Costa Rica). Field studies, X-ray diffraction analysis, petrographic, chemical and experimental studies give evidence of a sedimentary, early diagenetic origin of the nodules, in contrast to earlier suggestions. Smooth, discoidal, compact and very dense nodules with diameters of some mm to 9 cm dominate. They are characterized by braunite, hollandite, pyrolusite and quartz as well as 39-61% Mn, 0.9-1.6% Fe, 5-26% SiO2, 1.3-1.9% Al2O3, 1.5-3.0% Ba, 460-5400 ppm Cu, 85-340 ppm Ni and 40-130 ppm Co, among others. It is suggested that the original mineralogy (todorokite?) was altered during thermometamorphic (braunite) and hydrothermal (hollandite. pyrolusite) events. Petrographic similarities between the fossil nodules and modern deep-sea nodules are striking. Using standard hydrothermal techniques in an experimental study it is shown that under special conditions, braunite can be produced from modern nodule material.

Contents of rare earth elements (REE) in standard samples of Fe-Mn nodules (SDO-5, 6), Fe-Mn crust (SDO-7), and red clay (SDO-9) have been determined by ICP-MS and instrumental neutron activation analysis. Reproducibility of ICP-MS was 5-6%. These results are discussed and compared with other data. It has been found that distribution of REE in the standard samples of ocean Fe-Mn ores and red clay is highly homogenous.

Results of study of bottom sediments near Iceland and on the Jan Mayen Island are reported. It was found that in recent sediments chemical elements are mainly associated with pyro- and volcanoclastics. In some areas adjusted to deep-seated faults ancient iron-manganese crusts and sediments occur. They are rich in Ni, Co, V, Cu, Mo, Cd and other elements associated with endogenic matter.

The monograph highlights extensive materials collected during expeditions of P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. We consider facial conditions of nodule formation, regularities of their distribution, stratigraphic position, petrography, mineral composition, textures, geochemistry of nodules and hosting sediments. Origin of iron-manganese nodules in the Pacific Ocean is considered as well.

Concentrations and compositions of rare earth elements (REE) in three micronodule fractions (50-250, 250-500, and >500 ?m), coexisting macronodules, and host sediments were studied. Samples were collected at three sites (Guatemala Basin, Peru Basin, and northern equatorial Pacific) located in elevated bioproductivity zones of surface waters. Influence of micronodule size is dominant for REE compositions and subordinate for REE concentrations. For example, Ce concentration inversely correlates with micronodule size and drops to the lowest value in macronodules and host sediments. Decrease of Ce concentration is generally accompanied by Mn/Fe increase in micro- and macronodules. Hence, the role of diagenetic source of material directly correlates with micronodule sizes. Contribution of the diagenetic source is maximal for macronodules. REE composition distinctions for micronodules and macronodules can be attributed to variations of hydrogenic iron oxyhydroxides and diagenetic (hydrothermal) iron hydroxophosphates that are the major REE carriers in ferromanganese ore deposits. Relationship and general trend in chemistry of coexisting macronodules suggest that they can represent products of the initial stage of nodule formation.

Hydrogenic forms of iron and manganese occurrence were studied in samples of ferromanganese nodules sampled within two polygons during Cruise 28 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleeev (1982) in the western part of the Clarion-Clipperton ore province. Contents of labile exchangeable Fe and Mn, amorphous hydroxides and poorly soluble compounds of Fe and Mn were analyzed. In nodules from DM28-2474 Polygon labile exchangeable Fe and Mn and amorphous hydroxides dominated; in nodules from DM28-2483 Polygon poorly soluble compounds dominated. Analysis of contents of labile forms of Fe and Mn occurrence in different morphological types of nodules distinguished predominantly hydrogenous botryoidal nodules, spheroidal and ellipsoidal intergrowth nodules, and hydrogenic-diagenetic discoid nodules.

Contents of Fe, Mn, Al, P, and rare earth elements (REE) in ferruginous nodules and host sediments of the eastern Barents Sea were studied. A direct Fe-P correlation in reactive components of the sediments and nodules was found. The nodules were shown to be formed through Fe(II) oxidation in the surface layer of sediments and cementation of terrigenous fraction of sediments by Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. The latter accumulate phosphorus due to processes of sorption - co-precipitation, by forming Fe(III) hydrophosphates. REE composition in the sediments and nodules normalized to NASC contents is characterized by increased proportion of light REE that may be caused by regional features of their sources. Due to significant share of terrigenous matter in the Fe nodules (up to 65% for Nd), REE composition of bulk samples is similar to that of host sediments. A negative cerium anomaly in composition of reactive REE may result from REE sorption from seawater. REE bulk composition of a ferruginous crust is closer to that of seawater than one of the ferruginous nodules from the sediments because of essentially lower content of diluent terrigenous matter.
