The synthesis, characterization and ethylene polymerization behavior of a set of Tp'MCl3 complexes (4, M = Ti, Tp' HB(3-neopentyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(NP)); 5, M = Ti, Tp'= HB(3-tert-butyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(tBu)); 6, M = Ti, Tp' = HB(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(Ph)); 7, M = Zr, Tp' = HB(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(ph)); 8, M = Zr, Tp' = HB(3-tert-butyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(tBu))) is described. Treatment of these tris(pyrazolyl)borate Group IV compounds with methylalumoxane (MAO) generates active catalysts for ethylene polymerization. For the polymerization reactions performed in toluene at 60 degreesC and 3 atm of ethylene pressure, the activities varied between 1.3 and 5.1 X 10(3) g of PE/mol[M](.)h. The highest activity is reached using more sterically open catalyst precursor 4. The viscosity-average molecular weights ((M-v) over bar) of the PE's produced with these catalyst precursors varying from 3.57 to 20.23 x 10(5) gmol(-1) with melting temperatures in the range of 127-134 degreesC. Further polymerization studies employing 7 varying Al/Zr molar ratio and temperature of polymerization showed that the activity as well as the polymer properties are dependent on these parameters. In that case, higher activity was attained at 60 degreesC. The viscosity-average molecular weights of the polyethylene's decreases with increasing AI/Zr molar ratio. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Background: This study investigated the influence of estrogen deficiency and its treatment with estrogen and alendronate on the removal torque of osseointegrated titanium implants. Methods: Fifty-eight female Wistar rats received a titanium implant in the tibia metaphysis. After 60 days, which was needed for implant osseointegration, the animals were randomly divided into five groups: control (CTLE; N = 10), sham surgery (SHAM; N = 12), ovariectomy (OVX; N = 12), ovariectomy followed by hormone replacement (EST; N = 12), and ovariectomy followed by treatment with alendronate (ALE; N = 12). The CTLE group was sacrificed to confirm osseointegration, whereas the remaining groups were submitted to sham surgery or ovariectomy according to their designations. After 90 days, these animals were also sacrificed. Densitometry of femur and lumbar vertebrae was performed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to confirm systemic impairment of the animals. All implants were subjected to removal torque. Results: Densitometric analysis of the femur and lumbar vertebrae confirmed a systemic impairment of the animals, disclosing lower values of bone mineral density for OVX. Analysis of the removal torque of the implants showed statistically lower values (P <0.05) for the OVX group in relation to the other groups. However, the group treated with alendronate (ALE group) presented significantly higher torque values compared to the others. Conclusion: According to this study, estrogen deficiency was observed to have a negative influence on the removal torque of osseointegrated implants, whereas treatment with alendronate

Statement of problem. There are few studies on titanium casting shrinkage, and phosphate-bonded investments for titanium casting have not produced appropriate marginal fit.Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the thermal shrinkage of titanium and the setting and thermal expansion of 3 phosphate-bonded investments.Material and methods. The thermal shrinkage between the melting temperature and room temperature was calculated using a titanium thermal expansion coefficient. The thermal and setting expansion were measured for 3 phosphate bonded investments: Rematitan Plus (RP) specific for titanium, Rema Exakt (RE), and Castorit Super C (CA), using different special liquid concentrations (100%, 75%, and 50%). Setting expansion was measured for cylindrical specimens 50 mm long x 8 mm in diameter with a transducer. The heating and cooling curves were obtained with a dilatometer (DIL 402 PC). The total expansion curve was drawn using software, and temperatures to obtain expansion equivalent to titanium casting shrinkage were determined (n=5). In addition, the total expansion of the control group (RP at 430 degrees C) was measured, as well as the temperatures at which the other groups achieved equivalent total expansion (n=5). Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (alpha=.05).Results. Titanium casting shrinkage was estimated as 1.55%. RP did not achieve this expansion. RE achieved expansion of 1.55% only with a special liquid concentration of 100% at 594 degrees C. CA with all special liquid concentrations attained this expansion (351 degrees C to 572 degrees C). Total expansion of the control group was 0.86%, and the other groups reached that expansion within the range of 70 degrees C to 360 degrees C.Conclusions. Only RE and CA demonstrated sufficient expansion to compensate for titanium casting shrinkage. All groups reached total expansion equivalent to that of the control group at significantly lower temperatures.

Titanium(IV) oxide, coated on the surface of silica gel (surface area, 308 m2 g-1; amount of Ti(IV) per gram of modified silica gel, 1.8 x 10(-3) mol), was used to adsorb CrO4(2-) ions from acidic solutions. The exchange capacity increased at lower pH values and was affected to some extent by the acid used. The material was used to preconcentrate Cr(VI) from 0.5 ppm solutions of chromate very efficiently and virtually 100% recovery was achieved in every instance.

This work aims the evaluation of the kinetic triplets corresponding to the two successive steps of thermal decomposition of Ti(IV)-ethylenediaminetetraacetate complex. Applying the isoconversional Wall-Flynn-Ozawa method on the DSC curves, average activation energy: E=172.4 +/- 9.7 and 205.3 +/- 12.8 kJ mol(-1), and pre-exponential factor: logA = 16.38 +/- 0.84 and 18.96 +/- 1.21 min(-1) at 95% confidence interval could be obtained, regarding the partial formation of anhydride and subsequent thermal decomposition of uncoordinated carboxylate groups, respectively. From E and logA values, Dollimore and Malek methods could be applied suggesting PT (Prout-Tompkins) and R3 (contracting volume) as the kinetic model to the partial formation of anhydride and thermal decomposition of the carboxylate groups, respectively.

Ethylene was polymerized using a combination of Ni(diimine)Cl-2 (1) (diimine = 1,4-bis(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-acenaphthenediimine) and {Tp(Ms)*} TiCl3 (2) (Tp(Ms)* = hydridobis(3-mesitylpyrazol-1-yl)(5-mesityl-pyrazol-1-yl)) compounds in the presence of methyl-aluminoxane (MAO) at 30 degrees C. The productivity reaches a maximum at X-Ni = 0.75 (1400 kg of PE/mol[M] . h), and the produced polyethylene (PE) showed maximal melt flow index (0.13 g/10 min) and minimal intrinsic viscosity (2.24 dL/g) compared to polyethylenes obtained with different values of nickel loading fractions (X-Ni). Productivity intrinsic viscosity data, as well as melt flow index measurements markedly depend upon the content of the late transition metal, thus suggesting a synergic effect between nickel and titanium catalysts.

Objectives. Alterations in the commercially pure titanium (cpTi) surface may be undertaken to improve its biological properties. The aim of this study is to investigate the biocompatibility of cpTi submitted to different surface treatments.Methods. The cpTi surfaces were prepared so that machined and blasted surfaces, either acid etched or not, were compared using rat bone marrow cells cultured to differentiated into osteoblast. For attachment evaluation, cells were cultured for 4 and 24 h. Cell morphology was evaluated after 3 days. After 7, 14, and 21 days cell proliferation was evaluated. Total protein content and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were evaluated after 14 and 21 days. For bone-like nodule formation, cells were cultured for 21 days. Data were compared by analysis of variance.Results. Cell attachment, cell morphology, cell proliferation, and ALP activity were not affected by surface treatments. Total. protein content was reduced by blasted and acid etched surface. Bone-Like nodule formation was significantly reduced by blasted, acid etched, and a combination of both blasted and acid etched surfaces.Conclusions. Based on these results, it can be suggested that cpTi surfaces that were submitted only to machining treatment favor the final event of osteoblastic differentiation of the rat bone marrow cells, evidenced by increased bone-Like nodule formation. A new architecture for dye-sensitized solar cells is employed, based on a nanostructured transparent conducting oxide protruding from the substrate, covered with a separate active oxide layer. The objective is to decrease electron-hole recombination. The concept was tested by growing branched indium-tin oxide nanowires on glass using pulsed laser deposition followed by deposition of a sputtered titanium dioxide layer covering the wires. The separation of charge generation and charge transport functions opens many possibilities for dye-sensitized solar cell optimization. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia. Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The immobilization of soluble catalyst {Tp(Ms)}TiCl3 (Tp(Ms*)HB(3-mesityl-pyrazolyl)(2)(5-mesityl-pyrazolyl)(-)) on silica and MAO-modified silicas containing 4.0, 8.0 and 23.0 wt.% Al/SiO2 yields active supported catalysts for ethylene polymerization. Among the supported catalysts studied by XRF spectroscopy, higher titanium content was obtained using MAO-modified silica containing 8.0 wt.% Al/SiO2 as support. For the ethylene polymerization reactions carried out in hexane at 60degreesC using a combination of triisobutylaluminum (TiBA) and methylaluminoxane (MAO) (1:1), the activities varied between 24.4 and 113.5 kg of PE/mol [Ti] h. The highest activity is reached using MAO-modified silica containing 4.0 wt.% Al/SiO2 as support. The viscosity-average molecular weights ((M) over bar (v)) of the PE's produced with the supported catalysts varying from 1.44 to 9.94 x 10(5) g/mol with melting temperatures in the range of 125-140degreesC. The use of other Lewis acid cocatalysts, including TiBA, diethylaluminium chloride (DEAC), and trimethylaluminum (TMA) resulted also in the formation of active catalysts for ethylene polymerization. However, the activities are lower than that one using a combination of TiBA and MAO. The viscosity-average molecular weights (R,) of PE's are influenced by varying the cocatalysts as well as the Al/Ti molar ratio. The supported catalyst generated in situ under ethylene atmosphere is roughly four times more active than supported one containing 4.0 wt.% Al/SiO2. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work films were produced by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of titanium tetraisopropoxide-oxygen-helium mixtures and irradiated with 150 keV singly-charged nitrogen ions (N(+)) at fluences, phi, between 10(14) and 10(16) cm(-2). Irradiation resulted in compaction, which reached about 40% (measured via the film thickness) at the highest fluence. Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) revealed the presence of Ti-O bonds in all films. Both O-H and C-H groups were present in the as-deposited films, but the density of each of these decreased with increasing phi and was absent at high phi, indicating a loss of hydrogen. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed an increase in the C to Ti atomic ratio as phi increased, while the O to Ti ratio hardly altered, remaining at around 2.8. The optical gap of the films, derived from data obtained by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UVS), remained at about 3.6 eV for all fluences except the highest, for which an abrupt fall to around 1.0 eV was observed. For the irradiated films, the electrical conductivity, measured using the two-point method, showed a systematic increase with increasing phi. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
