In situ secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS) analyses of oxygen isotopes in authigenic calcite veins were obtained from an active thrust fault system drilled at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 892 (44°40.4'N, 125°07.1'W) along the Cascadia subduction margin. The average d18OPDB value of all samples is -9.9 per mil and the values are the lowest of any measured in active accretionary prisms. Ranges in individual veins can be as much as 19.6 per mil. There is an isotopic stratigraphy related to the structural stratigraphy. Mean isotope values in the hanging wall, thrust, and footwall are -14.4 per mil, -9.5 per mil, and -5.2 per mil, respectively. Several veins and crosscutting vein sequences show a general trend from lower to higher d18O values over time. Isotopic and textural data indicate several veins formed by a crack-seal mechanism and growth into open fractures. The best explanation for the strong 18O depletions is periodic rapid flow from 2-3 km deeper in the prism. Relatively narrow isotopic ranges for most veins suggest that fluids were derived from a similar source depth for each episode of fluid pulse and calcite crystallization. Structural and mass balance considerations are consistent with a record preserved in the veins of ten to hundreds of thousands of years. The fluid pulses may relate to periodic large earthquake events such as those recognized in the paleoseismicity records from the Cascadia margin.

Sediment cored within the Barbados subduction complex at Sites 541 and 542 are underconsolidated. Underconsolidation and changes in physical properties of the cored section can be related to excess pore water pressure that equals the lithostatic load at Site 542 and to major thrust faulting observed at Site 541. Apparently, the pore fluids within the subduction complex are absorbing the tectonic shock of underthrusting. Sediment sampled from the reference Site 543 on the adjacent Atlantic Plate are also underconsolidated. However, underconsolidation in Hole 543 is apparently due to the movement of excess nitrogen gas observed deeper in the hole. Excess gas was not observed at Sites 541 and 542.

En el siglo XX se cuenta con recursos de sistemas de lógica considerablemente más desarrollados y abarcadores (en sus posibilidades de aplicación) que los anteriores. Tales recursos brindan nuevas posibilidades de abordaje de la pregunta por lo que hay, no sólo por los ámbitos que se clarifican mediante ellos, sino también por el sustento que ofrecen para la reflexión filosófica los resultados obtenidos. Los avances producidos en el ámbito de la lógica en algo más de un siglo tuvieron variadas repercusiones en el enfoque y el tratamiento de distintas cuestiones filosóficas. Así, se ha echado mano a conceptos y recursos de lógica al considerar preguntas acerca de la estructura del mundo. Para la determinación de los componentes de la realidad se ha recurrido a la lógica, desde diversas posiciones filosóficas. Por ejemplo, se ha entendido que la lógica subyacente a la teoría científica brinda en algún sentido elementos para determinar la ontología (o para descartar la posibilidad de hacerlo, o para establecer qué función cumple la noción de ontología en la teoría científica). También, desde una óptica más amplia, se ha intentado mostrar que el uso del lenguaje tiene consecuencias respecto de la ontología. Hilary Putnam ha sugerido la posibilidad de ser al mismo tiempo un realista y un relativista conceptual. Involucra consideraciones como las mencionadas, respecto de lógica y ontología. Su objetivo es el intento de hacer justicia a la realidad y al misterio de nuestro mundo de sentido común. Tomo esta tesis como una propuesta de trabajo. Me interesa pensar en cómo ofrecer algunos elementos de juicio para evaluar sus alcances. Para ello, examino la sugerencia de Putnam mediante un ejemplo construido con ese objetivo. Entiendo que se requerirán, al menos, dos esquemas conceptuales diferentes: al que surgiría de la lógica de orden 1, tal como la desarrolla Quine, y al que podría obtenerse a partir de la teoría de objetos no existentes de Castañeda. Se contará así con elementos de juicio más precisos que los habituales para evaluar las consecuencias que se seguirían para la ontología en caso de sostener ambos esquemas conceptuales, en consonancia con la propuesta de Putnam que se ha tomado como objetivo general del proyecto

Igneous rocks recovered from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 134 Sites 827, 829, and 830 at the toe of the forearc slope of New Hebrides Island Arc were investigated, using petrography, mineral chemistry, major and trace element, and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic analyses. Basaltic and andesitic clasts, together with detrital crystals of plagioclase, pyroxenes, and amphiboles embedded in sed-lithic conglomerate or volcanic siltstone and sandstone of Pleistocene age, were recovered from Sites 827 and 830. Petrological features of these lava clasts suggest a provenance from the Western Belt of New Hebrides Island Arc; igneous constituents were incorporated into breccias and sandstones, which were in turn reworked into a second generation breccia. Drilling at Site 829 recovered a variety of igneous rocks including basalts and probably comagmatic dolerites and gabbros, plus rare ultramafic rocks. Geochemical features, including Pb isotopic ratios, of the mafic rocks are intermediate between midocean ridge basalts and island arc tholeiites, and these rocks are interpreted to be backarc basin basalts. No correlates of these mafic rocks are known from Espiritu Santo and Malakula islands, nor do they occur in the Pleistocene volcanic breccias at Sites 827 and 830. However, basalts with very similar trace element and isotopic compositions have been recovered from the northern flank of North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge at Site 828. It is proposed that igneous rocks drilled at Site 829 represent material from the North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge accreted onto the over-riding Pacific Plate during collision. An original depleted mantle harzburgitic composition is inferred for a serpentinite clast recovered at 407 meters below seafloor (mbsf) in Hole 829A. Its provenance is a matter of speculation. It could have been brought up along a deep thrust fault affecting the Pacific Plate at the colliding margin, or analogous to the Site 829 basaltic lavas, it may represent material accreted from the North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge.

At the Western Nankai Trough subduction zone at ODP Site 808, chemical concentration and isotopic ratio depth profiles of D, O, Sr, and He do not support fluid flow along the décollement nor at the frontal thrust. They do, however, support continuous or periodic lateral fluid flow: (1) at the base of the Shikoku Basin volcanic-rich sediment member, situated ~140 m above the décollement, and particularly (2) below the décollement. The latter must have been rather vigorous, as it was capable of transporting clay minerals over great distances. The fluid at ~140 m above the décollement is characterized by lower than seawater concentrations of Cl- (>=18% seawater dilution). It is 18O-rich and D-poor and has a non-radiogenic, oceanic, or volcanic arc Sr isotopic signature. It originates from "volcanic" clay diagenesis. The fluid below the décollement has also less Cl- than seawater (>20% dilution), is more enriched in 18O and depleted in D than fluid, but its Sr isotopic signature is radiogenic, continentalterrigenous. The source of this fluid is located arcward, is deep-seated, where illitization of the subducted clay minerals, a mixture of terrigenous and volcanic clays, occurs. The 3He/4He ratio below the décollement points to an ~25% mantle contribution. The nature of the physical and chemical discontinuities across the décollement suggests it is overpressured and is forming a leaky "dynamic seal" for fluid flow. In contrast with the situation at Barbados and Peru, where the major tectonic features are mineralized, here, although the complex is extremely fractured and faulted, mineralized macroscopic veins, fractures, and faults are absent. Instead, mineralized microstructures are widespread, indicating a diffuse mode of dewatering.

The shape and morphology of the northern Barbados Ridge complex is largely controlled by the sediment yield and failure behavior in response to high lateral loads imposed by convergence. Loads in excess of sediment yield strength result in nonrecoverable deformations within the wedge, and failure strength acts as an upper limit beyond which stresses are released through thrust faults. Relatively high loading rates lead to delayed consolidation and in-situ pore pressures greater than hydrostatic. The sediment yield and failure behavior is described for any stress path by a generalized constitutive model. A yield locus delineates the onset of plastic (non-recoverable) deformation, as defined from the isotropic and anisotropic consolidation responses of high-quality 38-mm triaxial specimens; a failure envelope was obtained by shearing the same specimens in both triaxial compression and extension. The yield locus is shown to be rotated into extension space and is centered about a K-line greater than unity, suggesting that the in-situ major principal stress has rotated into the horizontal plane, and that the sediment wedge is being subjected to extensional effective stress paths.

Apatite fission track (FT) ages and length characteristics of samples obtained from Cambrian to Paleocene-aged sandstones collected along the margin of Nares Strait in Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago are dominated by a thermal history related to Paleogene relative plate movements between Greenland and Ellesmere Island. A preliminary inverse FT thermal model for a Cambrian (Archer Fiord Formation) sandstone in the hanging wall of the Rawlings Bay thrust at Cape Lawrence is consistent with Paleocene exhumational cooling, likely as a result of erosion of the thrust. This suggests that thrusting at Cape Lawrence occurred prior to the onset of Eocene compression, likely due to transpression during earlier strikeslip along the strait. Models for samples from volcaniclastic sandstones of the Late Paleocene Pavy Formation (from Cape Back and near Pavy River), and a sandstone from the Late Paleocene Mount Lawson Formation (at Split Lake, near Makinson Inlet) are also consistent with minor burial heating following known periods of basaltic volcanism in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait (c. 61-59 Ma), or related tholeiitic volcanism and intrusive activity (c. 55-54 Ma). Thermal models for samples from sea level dykes from around Smith Sound suggest a period of Late Cretaceous - Paleocene heating prior to final cooling during Paleocene time. These model results imply that Paleocene tectonic movements along Nares Strait were significant, and provide limited support for the former existence of the Wegener Fault. Apatite FT data from central Ellesmere Island suggest however, that cooling there occurred during Early Eocene time (c. 50 Ma), which was likely a result of erosion of thrusts during Eurekan compression. This diachronous cooling suggests that Eurekan deformation was partitioned at discrete intervals across Ellesmere Island, and thus it is likely that displacements along the strait were much less than the 150 km that has been previously suggested for the Wegener Fault.

In the southeast of the Bolshoi Lyakhovsky Island there are outcrops of tectonic outliers composed of low-K medium-Ti tholeiitic basic rocks represented by low altered pillow basalts, as well as by their metamorphosed analogs: amphibolites and blueschists. The rocks are depleted in light rare-earth elements and were melted out of a depleted mantle source enriched in Th, Nb, and Zr also contributed to the rock formation. The magma sources were not affected by subduction-related fluids or melts. The rocks were part of the Jurassic South Anyui ocean basin crust. The blueschists are the crust of the same basin submerged beneath the more southern Anyui-Svyatoi Nos arc to depth of 30-40 km. Pressure and temperature of metamorphism suggest a setting of "warm" subduction. Mineral assemblages of the blueschists record time of a collision of the Anyui-Svyatoi Nos island arc and the New Siberian continental block expressed as a counter-clockwise PT trend. The pressure jump during the collision corresponds to heaping of tectonic covers above the zone of convergence 12 km in total thickness. Ocean rocks were thrust upon the margin of the New Siberian continental block in late Late Jurassic - early Early Cretaceous and mark the NW continuation of the South Anyui suture, one of the main tectonic sutures of the Northeastern Asia.

The evolution of pore fluids migrating through the forearc basins, continental massif, and accretionary prism of the Peru margin is recorded in the sequence of carbonate cements filling intergranular and fracture porosities. Petrographic, mineralogic, and isotopic analyses were obtained from cemented clastic sediments and tectonic breccias recovered during Leg 112 drilling. Microbial decomposition of the organic-rich upwelling facies occurs during early marine diagenesis, initially by sulfate-reduction mechanisms in the shallow subsurface, succeeded by carbonate reduction at depth. Microcrystalline, authigenic cements formed in the sulfate-reduction zone are 13C-depleted (to -20.1 per mil PDB), and those formed in the carbonate-reduction zone are 13C-enriched (to +19.0 per mil PDB). Calcium-rich dolomites and near-stoichiometric dolomites having uniformly heavy d18O values (+2.7 to +6.6 per mil PDB) are typical organic decomposition products. Quaternary marine dolomites from continental-shelf environments exhibit the strongest sulfate-reduction signatures, suggesting that Pleistocene sea-level fluctuations created a more oxygenated water column, caused periodic winnowing of the sediment floor, and expanded the subsurface penetration of marine sulfate. We have tentatively identified four exotic cement types precipitated from advected fluids and derived from the following diagenetic environments: (1) meteoric recharge, (2) basalt alteration, (3) seafloor venting and (4) hypersaline concentration. Coarsely crystalline, low-magnesium (Lo-Mg) calcite cements having pendant and blocky-spar morphologies, extremely negative d18O values (to -7.5 per mil PDB), and intermediate d13C values (-0.4 per mil to +4.6 per mil PDB) are found in shallow-marine Eocene strata. These cements are evidently products of meteoric diagenesis following subaerial emergence during late Eocene orogenic movements, although the strata have since subsided to greater than 4,000 m below sea level. Lo-Mg calcite cements filling scaly fabrics in the late Miocene accretionary prism sediments are apparently derived from fluids having lowered magnesium/calcium (Mg/Ca) and 18O/16O ratios; such fluids may have reacted with the subducting oceanic crust and ascended through the forearc along shallow-dipping thrust faults. Micritic, high-magnesium (Hi-Mg) calcite cements having extremely depleted d13C values (to -37.3%c PDB), and a benthic fauna of giant clams (Calyptogena sp.) supported by a symbiotic, chemoautotrophic metabolism, provide evidence for venting of methane-charged waters at the seafloor. Enriched d18O values (to +6.6%c PDB) in micritic dolomites from the continental shelf may be derived from hypersaline fluids that were concentrated in restricted lagoons behind an outer-shelf basement ridge, reactivated during late Miocene orogenesis.

Detrital K-feldspars and muscovites from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 116 cores that have depositional ages from 0 to 18 Ma have been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar technique. Four to thirteen individual K-feldspars have been dated from seven stratigraphic levels, each of which have a very large range, up to 1660 Ma. At each level investigated, at least one K-feldspar yielded an age minimum which is, within uncertainty, identical to the age of deposition. One to twelve single muscovite crystals from each of six levels have also been studied. The range of muscovite ages is less than that of the K-feldspars and, with one exception, reveal only a 20-Ma spread in ages. As with the K-feldspars, each level investigated contains muscovites with mineral ages essentially identical to depositional ages. These results indicate that a significant portion of the material in the Bengal Fan is first-cycle detritus derived from the Himalayas. Therefore, the significant proportion of sediment deposited in the distal fan in the early to mid Miocene can be ascribed to a significant pulse of uplift and erosion in the collision zone. Moreover, these data indicate that during the entire Neogene, some portion of the Himalayan orogen was experiencing rapid erosion (<= uplift). The lack of granulite facies rocks in the eastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau suggests that very rapid uplift must have been distributed in brief pulses in different places in the mountain belt. We suggest that the great majority of the crystals with young apparent ages have been derived from the southern slope of the Himalayas, predominantly from near the main central thrust zone. These data provide further evidence against tectonic models in which the Himalayas and Tibetan plateaus are uplifted either uniformly during the past 40 m.y. or mostly within the last 2 to 5 m.y.

Seven sites drilled in the central New Hebrides Island Arc during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 134 yielded varying quantities of upper Eocene through Pleistocene calcareous nannofossils. Most of the Miocene and Pliocene strata were absent from Sites 827-831 drilled along the collisional boundary between the Australia and Pacific plates where the North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge and Bougainville Guyot are being subducted. Sites 832 and 833, drilled in the intra-arc North Aoba Basin, contained upper Miocene through Pleistocene and early Pliocene through Pleistocene nannofossils, respectively. Detailed range charts displaying species abundances and age interpretations are presented for all of the sites. Despite problems of reworked assemblages, poor preservation, overgrowths and/or dilution from volcaniclastics, the nannofossil biostratigraphy delineates several repeated sections at Site 829 in the accretionary prism adjacent to Espiritu Santo Island. Paleogene pelagic sediments equivalent to those in a reference section at Site 828 appear to have been scraped from the downgoing North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge and accreted onto the forearc during the Pleistocene. Other sediments in the forearc include Pleistocene olistostromal trench-fill deposits containing clasts of various ages and compositions. Some of the clasts and olistoliths have affinities to rocks exposed on the neighboring islands and environs, whereas others are of uncertain origin. The matrix of the olistostromes is predominately Pleistocene, however, matrices of mixed nannofossil ages are frequently encountered. Comparisons of the mixed nannofossil ages in the matrices with sedimentological and structural data suggest that sediment mixing resulting from fault movement is subordinate to that occurring during deposition.
