A new mutual impedance - the receiving mutual impedance - between two normal-mode helical antennas is defined, measured, and theoretically calculated. The variations of the receiving mutual impedance with antenna separation, with frequency, and with excitation source direction are critically investigated. An application of the receiving mutual impedance in direction finding demonstrates its more accurate description of the mutual coupling effect than that using the conventional mutual impedance.

The 6% Ge isocomposition profile change of individual SiGe islands during Si capping at 640 degrees C is investigated by atomic force microscopy combined with a selective etching procedure. The island shape transforms from a dome to a {103}-faceted pyramid at a Si capping thickness of 0.32 nm, followed by the decreasing of pyramid facet inclination with increasing Si capping layer thickness. The 6% Ge isocomposition profiles show that the island with more highly Si enriched at its one base corner before Si capping becomes to be more highly Si intermixed along pyramid base diagonals during Si capping. This Si enrichment evolution inside an island during Si capping can be attributed to the exchange of capped Si atoms that aggregated to the island by surface diffusion with Ge atoms from inside the island by both atomic surface segregation and interdiffusion rather than to the atomic interdiffusion at the interface between the island and the Si substrate. In addition, the observed Si enrichment along the island base diagonals is attempted to be explained on the basis of the elastic constant anisotropy of the Si and Ge materials in (001) plane. Brand personality is a key determinant of brand equity. Consumers seek brands with congruent personalities and use brands’ personality to define their sense of self. However, far from being universal, previous researches found that European (Spanish) brand personality dimensions differ from those in America and Asia (Japan). Are these typical of the region or do they reflect national variations? This study examines brand personality dimensions among Chinese consumers with consumers responding to 10 different commercial brands. This shows perceptions of brand personality are country specific, due to the differences found between Japanese’ and Chinese’. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate optical data transmission through such quasi-lossless fibre spans, which provide an entirely different nonlinear propagation regime to conventionally EDFA/Raman amplified systems. We demonstrate 42.6 Gb/s transmission over 2500 km of SMF-28 with an 82 km span length, and investigate the optimisation of the system in terms of launch power and nonlinear tolerance. Our results show the first ever data transmission experiment using an ultra-long Raman laser to provide quasi-lossless conditions in the transmission fibre. For a span length of 82 km we have shown 2500 km transmission over SMF-28 fibre at 42.6 Gb/s. Our quasi-lossless configuration had 6 dB lower optimum power and improved nonlinear tolerance compared with a conventional EDFA only system.

Studies have shown that the brand “owner” is very influential in positioning the brand and when the brand “owner” ceases his or her active role the brand will be perceived differently by the consumers. Balance Theory (HBT), a cognitive psychological theory, studies the triadic relationships between two persons and an entity and predicts that when a person’s original perception of the relationship is disturbed, the person restructures to a new balanced perception. Consequently, this research was undertaken to: conceptualize the brand owner’s impact on consumer’s brand perception; test the applicability of both the static and dynamic predictions of the Heider’s Balance Theory in brand owner-consumer-brand relation (OCB); construct and test a model of brand owner-consumer-brand relation; and examine if personality has an influence on OCB. A discovery-oriented approach was taken to understand the selected market segment, the ready-to-wear and diffusion lines of international designer labels. Chinese Brand Personality Scale, fashion proneness and hedonic and utilitarian shopping scales were developed, and validated. 51 customers were surveyed. Both traditional and extended methods used in the Balance Theory were employed in this study. Responses to liked brand have been used to test and develop the model, while those for disliked brand were used for test and confirmation. A “what if’ experimental approach was employed to test the applicability of dynamic HBT theory in OCB Model. The hypothesized OCB Model has been tested and validated. Consumers have been found to have separate views on the brand and the brand owner; and their responses to contrasting ethical and non-ethical news of the brand owner are different. Personality has been found to have an influence and two personality adapted models have been tested and validated. The actual results go beyond the prediction of the Balance Theory. Dominant triple positive balance mode, dominant negative balance mode, and mode of extreme antipathy have been found. It has been found that not all balanced modes are good for the brand. Contrary to Heider’s findings, simply liking may not necessarily lead to unit relation in the OCB Model.

The surface residual stresses in SiC particle-reinforced Al matrix composites are measured using a recently developed nanoindentation technique. The tensile biaxial residual stress in Al is found to increase with the particle concentration. The stress magnitudes are in reasonable agreement with those from numerical modeling.

A diode-cladding-pumped mid-infrared passively Q-switched Ho3+-doped fluoride fiber laser using a reverse designed broad band semiconductor saturable mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Nonlinear reflectivity of the SESAM was measured using an in-house Yb3+-doped mode-locked fiber laser at 1062 nm. Stable pulse train was produced at a slope efficient of 12.1% with respect to the launched pump power. Maximum pulse energy of 6.65 μ J with a pulse width of 1.68 μ s and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ∼50 dB was achieved at a repetition rate of 47.6 kHz and center wavelength of 2.971 μ m. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3 μ m region SESAM-based Q-switched fiber laser with the highest average power and pulse energy, as well as the longest wavelength from mid-infrared passively Q-switched fluoride fiber lasers. © 2014 Astro Ltd.

Background: Monocytes are implicated in the initiation and progression of the atherosclerotic plaque contributing to plaque instability and rupture. Little is known about the role of the three phenotypically and functionally different monocyte subpopulations in determining ventricular remodelling following ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Mon1 are the ‘classical’ monocytes with inflammatory action, whilst Mon3 are considered reparative with fibroblast deposition ability. The function of the newly described Mon2 subset is yet to be fully described. Method: STEMI patients (n=196, mean age 62±13 years; 72% male) treated with percutaneous revascularization were recruited within the first 24 h post-infarction. Peripheral blood monocyte subpopulations were enumerated and characterised using flow cytometry after staining for CD14, CD16 and CCR2. Phenotypically, monocyte subpopulations are defined as: CD14++CD16-CCR2+ (Mon1), CD14++CD16+CCR2+ (Mon2) and CD14+CD16++CCR2- (Mon3) cells. Transthoracic 2D echocardiography was performed within 7 days and at 6 months post infarct to assess ventricular volumes, mass, systolic, and diastolic functions as well as strain and strain rate. Results: Using linear regression analysis higher counts for Mon1, and lower counts for Mon2 and Mon3 were significantly associated with the baseline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) within 7 days post infarct (table 1). At 6 months post STEMI lower counts of Mon2 remained positively associated with a decrease in LVEF at completion of remodelling (p=0.002). Conclusion: Peripheral monocytes of all three subsets correlate with LVEF after a myocardial infarction. High counts of the inflammatory Mon1 are associated with the reduced baseline ejection fraction post infarction. After remodelling, the convalescent ejection fraction was independently predicted by monocyte subpopulation 2. As lower counts depicted negative ventricular remodelling, this suggests a possible myofibroblast deposition and angiogenesis role for the newly described intermediate monocyte subpopulation Mon2 as opposed to the previously anticipated inflammatory role.

Photo-activated disinfection is beginning to be used in dental surgery to treat deep seated bacterial infection. It works by combining a photosensitiser and light of a specific frequency to generate singlet oxygen which is toxic to many types of bacteria. It is suggested that this technique could be used as a means to help treat infection more generally. To do so, it needs to work with materials and geometries exhibiting different physical and optical characteristics to teeth. In these trials, samples of stainless steel and polymethylmethacrylate were exposed to bacterial solutions of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermis. These were treated with tolonium chloride-based photo-activated disinfection regimes showing positive results with typically 4 log10 reductions in colony forming units. Tests were also carried out using slotted samples to represent geometric features which might be found on implants. These tests, showed disinfectant effect however to a much lesser degree. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
