Thin films of chemically synthesized polyaniline and poly(o-methoxyaniline) were exposed to ionizing X-ray radiation and characterized by radiation induced conductivity measurements, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, electrical conductivity and solubility measurements. Samples irradiated in vacuum or dry Oxygen atmosphere did not have their electronic spectra changed. However, under humid atmosphere the energy of the excitonic transition was decreased and accompanied by a great conductivity increase. The results indicate that doping of polyaniline can be induced by X-ray radiation which might be of great interest for applications on lithography and microelectronics.

A semi-analytical approach is proposed to study the rotational motion of an artificial satellite under the influence of the torque due to the solar radiation pressure and taking into account the influence of Earth's shadow. The Earth's shadow is introduced in the equations for the rotational motion as a function depending on the longitude of the Sun, on the ecliptic's obliquity and on the orbital parameters of the satellite. By mapping and computing this function, we can get the periods in which the satellite is not illuminated and the torque due to the solar radiation pressure is zero. When the satellite is illuminated, a known analytical solution is used to predict the satellite's attitude. This analytical solution is expressed in terms of Andoyer's variables and depends on the physical and geometrical properties of the satellite and on the direction of the Sun radiation flux. By simulating a hypothetical circular cylindrical type satellite, an example is exhibited and the results agree quite well when compared with a numerical integration. © 1997 COSPAR. Cooperative energy-transfer upconversion luminescence in Tb 3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO 3-PbF 2-CdF 2 vitroceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off-resonance infrared excitation, is investigated. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D 3( 5G 6 → 7F J(J=6,5,4) and 5D 4 → 7F J(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, were readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The comparison of the upconversion process in a vitroceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.

β-glucan is an important polysaccharide due to its medicinal properties of stimulating the immune system and preventing chronic diseases such as cancer. The aim of the present study was to determine the anticlastogenic effect of β-glucan in cells exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UV). Chromosome aberration assay was performed in drug-metabolizing cells (HTC) and non drug-metabolizing cells (CHO-K1 and repair-deficient CHO-xrs5), using different treatment protocols. Continuous treatment (UV + β-glucan) was not effective in reducing the DNA damage only in CHO-xrs5 cells. However, the pre-treatment protocol (β-glucan before UV exposition) was effective in reducing DNA damage only in CHO-K1 cells. In post-treatment (β-glucan after UV exposition) did not show significative anticlastogenic effects, although there was a tendency toward prevention. The data suggest that β-glucan has more than one action mechanism, being capable of exerting desmutagenic as well as bio-antimutagenic action. The findings also suggest that the presence of the xenobiotic metabolizing system can reduce the chemopreventive capacity of β-glucan. Therefore, these results indicate that β-glucan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be used in the prevention and/or reduction of DNA damage. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Impacts of micrometeoroids on the surfaces of the plutonian small satellites Nix and Hydra can generate dust particles. Even in this region so far from the Sun these tiny ejected particles are under the effects of the solar radiation pressure. In this work, we investigate the orbital evolution of the escaping ejecta from both the small satellites under the effects of the radiation pressure combined with the gravitational effects of Pluto, Charon, Nix and Hydra. The mass production rate of micron-sized dust particles generated by micrometeoroids hitting the satellites is obtained, and numerical simulations are performed to derive the lifetime of the ejecta. These pieces of information allow us to estimate the optical depth of a putative ring, which extends from the orbits of Nix to Hydra. The ejected particles, between the orbits of Nix and Hydra, form a wide ring of about 16 000 km. Collisions with the massive bodies and escape from the system are mainly determined by the effects of the solar radiation pressure. This is an important loss mechanism, removing 30 per cent of the initial set of 1 μm-sized particles in 1 yr. The surviving particles form a ring too faint to be detectable with the derived maximum optical depth of 4 × 10-11. © 2013 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Synopsis: Objectives: In this research, an experimental and theoretical study was conducted to design a photodegradation mechanism of the amino acid tryptophan (Trp) in hair fibres. Methods: For the experimental research, Caucasian hair fibres were exposed to several different solar radiation simulation periods. Then, Trp and its photoproducts (N-formylkynurenine and kynurenine) were assayed by excitation and emission spectroscopic analysis. Results: For the theoretical study, reactions involved in the photodegradation of Trp were evaluated by high-level quantum mechanical calculations in a density functional theory (DFT) framework which indicate a probable Trp degradation mechanism with a minimum expended energy pathway. Conclusion: The biochemistry concerning these reactions is essentially important for a biological system where the degradation of Trp occurs. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

We prepared a W/WO3/TiO2 bicomposite photoanode by simple electrochemical anodization of W foil, followed by cathodic electrodeposition of TiO2 and annealing at 450 C for 30 min. This photoanode shows good photoactivity under irradiation with UV and visible light. In optimized conditions, it promotes complete photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of 3.33 × 10-5 mol L-1 basic red 51 solution (which is used in hair dye) at 0.1 mol L-1 Na2SO4, pH 2.0, under a current density of 1.25 mA cm-2 and ultraviolet and visible radiation-total organic carbon removal is 94 and 88%, respectively. This effect paves the way for the sustainable solar-assisted remediation of water bodies contaminated with organic components of hair dyes. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
