This paper presents the results of laboratory model loading tests and numerical studies carried out on square footings supported on geosynthetic reinforced sand beds. The relative performance of different forms of geosynthetic reinforcement (i.e. geocell, planar layers and randomly distributed mesh elements) in foundation beds is compared; using same quantity of reinforcement in each test. A biaxial geogrid and a geonet are used for reinforcing the sand beds. Geonet is used in two forms of reinforcement, viz. Planar layers and geocell, while the biaxial geogrid was used in three forms of reinforcement, viz. planar layers, geocell and randomly distributed mesh elements. Laboratory load tests on unreinforced and reinforced footings are simulated in a numerical model and the results are analyzed to understand the distribution of displacements and stresses below the footing better. Both the experimental and numerical studies demonstrated that the geocell is the most advantageous form of soil reinforcement technique of those investigated, provided there is no rupture of the material during loading. Geogrid used in the form of randomly distributed mesh elements is found to be inferior to the other two forms. Some significant observations on the difference in reinforcement mechanism for different forms of reinforcement are presented in this paper.

Direct observation of events taking place at the contacting interfaces is important to understand many tribological phenomena. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) has the ability to look through materials at very high magnifications. Most of the TEM observations are done long after the deforming loads and stresses have been relaxed and the material state is further disturbed during the specimen preparation. We have developed a specimen holder in which two electron transparent surfaces can be brought in contact and moved relative to each other in JEOL 2000FX microscope. This holder enables visualization of not only the contacting surfaces at nanoscale but also the subsurface deformation resulting from the contact interaction. Sliding experimentS have been carried out mimicking a single asperity sliding contact. A sharp tungsten probe is moved laterally against a tip mounted on a cantilever. Magnitude of the contact instability, when the contact is broken is found to be dependent on the local geometry of the contact.(C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The reported incidence of human campylobacteriosis in Finland is higher than in most other European countries. A high annual percentage of sporadic infections is of foreign origin, although a notable proportion of summer infections is domestically acquired. While chickens appear to be a major source of campylobacters for humans in most countries, the prevalence of campylobacters is very low in chicken slaughter batches in Finland. Data on other potential animal reservoirs of human pathogenic campylobacters in Finland are scarce. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the status of Finnish cattle as a potential source of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. and antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter jejuni for human sporadic campylobacter infections of domestic origin. A survey of the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. in Finnish cattle studied bovine rectal faecal samples (n=952) and carcass surface samples (n=948) from twelve Finnish slaughterhouses from January to December 2003. The total prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in faecal samples was 31.1%, and in carcass samples 3.5%. Campylobacter jejuni, the most common species, was present in 19.5% of faecal samples and in 3.1% of carcasses. In addition to thermophilic Campylobacter spp., C. hyointestinalis ssp. hyointestinalis was present in bovine samples. The prevalence of campylobacters was higher among beef cattle than among dairy cattle. Using the enrichment method, the number of positive faecal samples was 7.5 times higher than that obtained by direct plating. The predominant serotypes of faecal C. jejuni, determined by serotyping with a set of 25 commercial antisera for heat-stable antigens (Penner), were Pen2 and Pen4-complex, which covered 52% of the samples. Genotyping with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) using SmaI restriction yielded a high diversity of C. jejuni subtypes in cattle. Determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations of ampicillin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid, and oxytetracycline among bovine C. jejuni isolates using a commercial broth microdilution method yielded 9% of isolates resistant to at least one of the antimicrobials examined. No multiresistant isolates were found among the bovine C. jejuni strains. The study of the shedding patterns of Campylobacter spp. among three Finnish dairy cattle herds included the examination of fresh faecal samples and tank milk samples taken five times, as well as samples from drinking troughs taken once during the one-year study. The semiquantitative enrichment method detected C. jejuni in 169 of the 340 faecal samples, mostly at low levels. In addition, C. jejuni was present in one drinking trough sample. The prevalence between herds and sampling occasions varied widely. PFGE, using SmaI as restriction enzyme, identified only a few subtypes in each herd. In two 2 of the herds, two subtypes persisted throughout the sampling. Individual animals presented various shedding patterns during the study. Comparison of C. jejuni isolates from humans, chickens and cattle included the design of primers for four new genetic markers selected from completely sequenced C. jejuni genomes 81-176, RM1221 and NCTC 11168, and the PCR examination of domestic human isolates from southern Finland in 1996, 2002 and 2003 (n=309), chicken isolates from 2003, 2006 and 2007 (n=205), and bovine isolates from 2003 (n=131). The results revealed that bovine isolates differed significantly from human and chicken isolates. In particular, the - glutamyl transpeptidase gene was uncommon among bovine isolates. The PFGE genotyping of C. jejuni isolates, using SmaI and KpnI restriction enzymes, included a geographically representative collection of isolates from domestic sporadic human infections, chicken slaughter batches, and cattle faeces and carcasses during the seasonal peak of campylobacteriosis in the summer of 2003. The study determined that 55.4% of human isolates were indistinguishable from those of chickens and cattle. Temporal association between isolates from humans and chickens was possible in 31.4% of human infections. Approximately 19% of the human infections may have been associated with cattle. However, isolates from bovine carcasses and human cases represented different PFGE subtypes. In conclusion, this study suggests that Finnish cattle is a notable reservoir of C. jejuni, the most important Campylobacter sp. in human enteric infections. Although the concentration of these organisms in bovine faeces appeared to be low, excretion can be persistent. The genetic diversity and presence or absence of marker genes support previous suggestions of host-adapted C. jejuni strains, and may indicate variations in virulence between strains from different hosts. In addition to chickens, Finnish cattle appeared to be an important reservoir and possible source of C. jejuni in domestic sporadic human infections. However, sources of campylobacters may differ between rural and urban areas in Finland, and in general, the transmission of C. jejuni of bovine origin probably occurs via other routes than food.

The problem of identification of parameters of a beam-moving oscillator system based on measurement of time histories of beam strains and displacements is considered. The governing equations of motion here have time varying coefficients. The parameters to be identified are however time invariant and consist of mass, stiffness and damping characteristics of the beam and oscillator subsystems. A strategy based on dynamic state estimation method, that employs particle filtering algorithms, is proposed to tackle the identification problem. The method can take into account measurement noise, guideway unevenness, spatially incomplete measurements, finite element models for supporting structure and moving vehicle, and imperfections in the formulation of the mathematical models. Numerical illustrations based on synthetic data on beam-oscillator system are presented to demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the proposed procedure.

The problem of a circular elastic inclusion in a cylindrical shell subjected to internal pressure or thermal loading is studied. The two shallow-shell equations governing the behaviour of a cylindrical shell are transformed into a single differential equation involving a curvature parameter and a complex potential function in a non-dimensional form. In the shell region, the solution is represented by Hankel functions of first kind, whereas in the inclusion region it is represented by Bessel functions of first kind. Boundary conditions at the shell-inclusion junction are expressed in a simple form involving in-plane strains and change in curvature. The effect of such inclusion parameters as extensional rigidity, bending rigidity, and thermal expansion coefficients on the stress concentrations has been determined. The results are presented in non-dimensional form for ready use.

Hybrid elements, which are based on a two-field variational formulation with the displacements and stresses interpolated separately, are known to deliver very high accuracy, and to alleviate to a large extent problems of locking that plague standard displacement-based formulations. The choice of the stress interpolation functions is of course critical in ensuring the high accuracy and robustness of the method. Generally, an attempt is made to keep the stress interpolation to the minimum number of terms that will ensure that the stiffness matrix has no spurious zero-energy modes, since it is known that the stiffness increases with the increase in the number of terms. Although using such a strategy of keeping the number of interpolation terms to a minimum works very well in static problems, it results either in instabilities or fails to converge in transient problems. This is because choosing the stress interpolation functions merely on the basis of removing spurious energy modes can violate some basic principles that interpolation functions should obey. In this work, we address the issue of choosing the interpolation functions based on such basic principles of interpolation theory and mechanics. Although this procedure results in the use of more number of terms than the minimum (and hence in slightly increased stiffness) in many elements, we show that the performance continues to be far superior to displacement-based formulations, and, more importantly, that it also results in considerably increased robustness.

Titanium flats were scribed by silicon carbide wedges over ranges of temperatures and applied strains and with lubrication. The response of the material to scribing was noted by recording the coefficient of friction, the surface morphology of track and the subsurface deformation. Additional data were obtained from (1) uniaxial compression of titanium, (2) scribing of oxygen-free high conductivity copper and (3) scribing of aluminium under dry and lubricated conditions to analyse and explain the observed variation in response of titanium to scribing with strain, temperature and lubrication.

Lamination-dependent shear corrective terms in the analysis of flexure of laminates are derived from a priori assumed linear thicknesswise distributions for gradients of transverse shear stresses and using them in the two in-plane equilibrium equations of elasticity in each ply. Adding these corrective terms to (i) Classical Laminate Plate Theory (CLPT) displacements and (ii) Classical Laminate Shear Deformation Theory (CLSDT) displacements, four new refined lamination-dependent shear deformation models for angle-ply laminates are developed. Performance of these models is evaluated by comparing the results from these models with those from exact elasticity solutions for antisymmetric 2-ply laminates and for 4-ply [15/-15](s) laminates. In general, the model with shear corrective terms based on CLPT and added to CLSDT displacements is sufficient and predicts good estimates, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for all displacements and stresses.

The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions corresponding to the three-dimensional equations for the linear elastic equilibrium of a clamped plate of thickness 2ϵ, are shown to converge (in a specific sense) to the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the well-known two-dimensional biharmonic operator of plate theory, as ϵ approaches zero. In the process, it is found in particular that the displacements and stresses are indeed of the specific forms usually assumed a priori in the literature. It is also shown that the limit eigenvalues and eigenfunctions can be equivalently characterized as the leading terms in an asymptotic expansion of the three-dimensional solutions, in terms of powers of ϵ. The method presented here applies equally well to the stationary problem of linear plate theory, as shown elsewhere by P. Destuynder.

This work aims at dimensional reduction of non-linear isotropic hyperelastic plates in an asymptotically accurate manner. The problem is both geometrically and materially non-linear. The geometric non-linearity is handled by allowing for finite deformations and generalized warping while the material non-linearity is incorporated through hyperelastic material model. The development, based on the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) with moderate strains and very small thickness to shortest wavelength of the deformation along the plate reference surface as small parameters, begins with three-dimensional (3-D) non-linear elasticity and mathematically splits the analysis into a one-dimensional (1-D) through-the-thickness analysis and a two-dimensional (2-D) plate analysis. Major contributions of this paper are derivation of closed-form analytical expressions for warping functions and stiffness coefficients and a set of recovery relations to express approximately the 3-D displacement, strain and stress fields. Consistent with the 2-D non-linear constitutive laws, 2-D plate theory and corresponding finite element program have been developed. Validation of present theory is carried out with a standard test case and the results match well. Distributions of 3-D results are provided for another test case. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Bacteria present in natural environments such as soil have evolved multiple strategies to escape predation. We report that natural isolates of Enterobacteriaceae that actively hydrolyze plant-derived aromatic beta-glucosides such as salicin, arbutin and esculin, are able to avoid predation by the bacteriovorous amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum and nematodes of multiple genera belonging to the family Rhabditidae. This advantage can be observed under laboratory culture conditions as well as in the soil environment. The aglycone moiety released by the hydrolysis of beta-glucosides is toxic to predators and acts via the dopaminergic receptor Dop-1 in the case of Caenorhabditis elegans. While soil isolates of nematodes belonging to the family Rhabditidae are repelled by the aglycone, laboratory strains and natural isolates of Caenorhabditis sp. are attracted to the compound, mediated by receptors that are independent of Dop-1, leading to their death. The b-glucosides-positive (Bgl(+)) bacteria that are otherwise non-pathogenic can obtain additional nutrients from the dead predators, thereby switching their role from prey to predator. This study also offers an evolutionary explanation for the retention by bacteria of `cryptic' or `silent' genetic systems such as the bgl operon.

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a convenient and rapid means of producing dense ceramic compacts. However, the mechanisms responsible for rapid densification have not been identified satisfactorily, with different studies using an indirect approach yielding varied values for the densification parameters. This study involved SPS in high purity nanocrystalline alumina with temperatures ranging from 1173 to 1423K and stresses from 25 to 100MPa. A direct approach, with analyses at a constant density, revealed a stress exponent of similar to 1 and an inverse grain size dependence of similar to 3, consistent with Coble creep process. Whereas the direct approach gives a stress exponent of similar to 1, the indirect approach used previously gives stress exponents ranging from similar to 2.2 to 3.5 with the same data, thereby revealing potentially spurious values of the densification parameters from conventional indirect approaches to characterizing densification. The rapid densification during SPS is related to the finer grain sizes retained with the rapid heating rates and the imposed stress that enhances the driving force for densification.

Background: We recently reported significant association of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) with acute diarrhea in children. Persistent diarrhea (PD) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in infants below two years of age in developing countries. Understanding age-dependent frequency and duration of NPEV infections is important to determine their association with persistent diarrhea and disease burden. Objectives: A cohort of 140 infants was followed for 6 months to 2 years of age to determine the frequency, duration, and association with PD of NPEV infections in comparison with rotavirus and other agents. Study design: Stool samples were collected every 14 days, and diarrheal episodes and their duration were recorded. Enteroviruses were characterized by RT-PCR and VP1 gene sequence analysis, rotavirus by electropherotyping, and other agents by PCR. Results: Of 4545 samples, negative for oral polio vaccine strains, 3907 (85.96%) and 638 (14.04%) were NPEV-negative and NPEV-positive, respectively, representing 403 (8.87%) infection episodes. About 68% of NPEV infections occurred during the first year with every child having at least one episode lasting between four days and four months. Approximately 38% and 22% of total diarrheal episodes were positive for NPEV and RV, respectively. While about 18% of NPEV infection episodes were associated with diarrhea, 6% being persistent, 13% of total diarrheal episodes were persistent involving infections by monotype NPEV strains or sequential infections by multiple strains and other agents. Conclusions: This is the first report revealing NPEVs as the single most frequently and persistently detected viral pathogen in every PD episode. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Although uncertainties in material properties have been addressed in the design of flexible pavements, most current modeling techniques assume that pavement layers are homogeneous. The paper addresses the influence of the spatial variability of the resilient moduli of pavement layers by evaluating the effect of the variance and correlation length on the pavement responses to loading. The integration of the spatially varying log-normal random field with the finite-difference method has been achieved through an exponential autocorrelation function. The variation in the correlation length was found to have a marginal effect on the mean values of the critical strains and a noticeable effect on the standard deviation which decreases with decreases in correlation length. This reduction in the variance arises because of the spatial averaging phenomenon over the softer and stiffer zones generated because of spatial variability. The increase in the mean value of critical strains with decreasing correlation length, although minor, illustrates that pavement performance is adversely affected by the presence of spatially varying layers. The study also confirmed that the higher the variability in the pavement layer moduli, introduced through a higher value of coefficient of variation (COV), the higher the variability in the pavement response. The study concludes that ignoring spatial variability by modeling the pavement layers as homogeneous that have very short correlation lengths can result in the underestimation of the critical strains and thus an inaccurate assessment of the pavement performance. Asymptotically-accurate dimensional reduction from three to two dimensions and recovery of 3-D displacement field of non-prestretched dielectric hyperelastic membranes are carried out using the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) with moderate strains and very small ratio of the membrane thickness to its shortest wavelength of the deformation along the plate reference surface chosen as the small parameters for asymptotic expansion. Present work incorporates large deformations (displacements and rotations), material nonlinearity (hyperelasticity), and electrical effects. It begins with 3-D nonlinear electroelastic energy and mathematically splits the analysis into a one-dimensional (1-D) through-the-thickness analysis and a 2-D nonlinear plate analysis. Major contribution of this paper is a comprehensive nonlinear through-the-thickness analysis which provides a 2-D energy asymptotically equivalent of the 3-D energy, a 2-D constitutive relation between the 2-D generalized strain and stress tensors for the plate analysis and a set of recovery relations to express the 3-D displacement field. Analytical expressions are derived for warping functions and stiffness coefficients. This is the first attempt to integrate an analytical work on asymptotically-accurate nonlinear electro-elastic constitutive relation for compressible dielectric hyperelastic model with a generalized finite element analysis of plates to provide 3-D displacement fields using VAM. A unified software package `VAMNLM' (Variational Asymptotic Method applied to Non-Linear Material models) was developed to carry out 1-D non-linear analysis (analytical), 2-D non-linear finite element analysis and 3-D recovery analysis. The applicability of the current theory is demonstrated through an actuation test case, for which distribution of 3-D displacements are provided. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
