Tensor3D: A computer graphics program to simulate 3D real-time deformation and visualization of geometric bodies

Tensor3D is a geometric modeling program with the capacity to simulate and visualize in real-time the deformation, specified through a tensor matrix and applied to triangulated models representing geological bodies. 3D visualization allows the study of deformational processes that are traditionally conducted in 2D, such as simple and pure shears. Besides geometric objects that are immediately available in the program window, the program can read other models from disk, thus being able to import objects created with different open-source or proprietary programs. A strain ellipsoid and a bounding box are simultaneously shown and instantly deformed with the main object. The principal axes of strain are visualized as well to provide graphical information about the orientation of the tensor's normal components. The deformed models can also be saved, retrieved later and deformed again, in order to study different steps of progressive strain, or to make this data available to other programs. The shape of stress ellipsoids and the corresponding Mohr circles defined by any stress tensor can also be represented. The application was written using the Visualization ToolKit, a powerful scientific visualization library in the public domain. This development choice, allied to the use of the Tcl/Tk programming language, which is independent on the host computational platform, makes the program a useful tool for the study of geometric deformations directly in three dimensions in teaching as well as research activities. Optimizing the design of preactivated titanium T-loop springs with Loop software

ATMA (Ormco Corp, Glendora, Calif) T-loop spring (TTLS), preactivated with a gable bend distal to the loop, holds promise for producing controlled tipping of the canines and translation of the posterior segment. However, there is currently no consensus as to where the preactivated gable bend or the loop should be placed, what the height of the loop should be, or how the interbracket distance changes the moments produced. Using the Loop software program (dHal, Athens, Greece), we systematically modified a .017 x .025-in TTLS (10 x 6 mm) that was preactivated with a 45 degrees gable bend distal to the loop, and simulated the effects. As the gable bend was moved posteriorly, the moment increased at the posterior bracket more than it decreased at the anterior bracket. As the loop was brought closer to the anterior bracket, the posterior moment decreased at the same rate that it increased anteriorly. As the loop was increased in size, the moments increased both posteriorly and anteriorly. As the interbracket distance increased, the posterior moment decreased, and the anterior moment remained constant. We concluded that the size of the loop should be slightly increased, to 10 x 7 mm, and it should be placed 2 mm from the anterior bracket, with a preactivation bend of 45 degrees, 4 to 5 mm from the posterior bracket (after 4 mm of activation).

Phonological remediation program in students with developmental dyslexia

Background: program for phonological remediation in developmental dyslexia. Aim: to verify the efficacy of a program for phonological remediation in students with developmental dyslexia. Specific goals of this study involved the comparison of the linguistic-cognitive performance of students with developmental dyslexia with that of students considered good readers; to compare the results obtained in pre and post-testing situations of students with dyslexia who were and were not submitted to the program; and to compare the results obtained with the phonological remediation program in students with developmental dyslexia to those obtained in good readers. Method: participants of this study were 24 students who were divided as follows: Group I (GI) was divided in two other groups - Gle with 6 students with developmental dyslexia who were submitted to the program; and Glc with 6 students with developmental dyslexia who were not submitted to the program; Group II (GII) was also divided in two other groups - GIIe with 6 good readers who were submitted to the program, and GIIc with 6 good readers who were not submitted to the program. The phonological remediation program (Gonzalez & Rosquete, 2002) was developed in three stages: pre-testing, training and post-testing. Results: results indicate that GI presented a lower performance in phonological skills, reading and writing when compared to GII in the pre-testing situation. However, GIe presented a similar performance to that of GII in the post-testing situation, indicating the effectiveness of the phonological remediation program in students with developmental dyslexia. Conclusion: this study made evident the effectiveness of the phonological remediation program in students with developmental dyslexia.

Highlights from the I international symposium of thrombosis and anticoagulation in internal medicine, October 23-25, 2008, Sao Paulo, Brazil

The importance of thrombosis and anticoagulation in clinical practice is rooted firmly in several fundamental constructs that can be applied both broadly and globally. Awareness and the appropriate use of anticoagulant therapy remain the keys to prevention and treatment. However, to assure maximal efficacy and safety, the clinician must, according to the available evidence, choose the right drug, at the right dose, for the right patient, under the right indication, and for the right duration of time. The first International Symposium of Thrombosis and Anticoagulation in Internal Medicine was a scientific program developed by clinicians for clinicians. The primary objective of the meeting was to educate, motivate and inspire internists, cardiologists and hematologists by convening national and international visionaries, thought-leaders and dedicated clinician-scientists in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Epidemiologia molecular das infecções por rotavírus G2 ao longo de 16 anos (1992 a 2008) na região amazônica, Brasil

No Brasil, estima-se que os rotavírus causem 3.352.053 episódios de diarreia, 655.853 ambulatoriais, 92.453 hospitalizações e 850 mortes envolvendo crianças menores de 5 anos de idade. Os rotavírus pertencem à família Reoviridae, gênero Rotavirus. A partícula viral é constituída por três camadas proteicas concêntricas e pelo genoma viral reunindo 11 segmentos de RNA com dupla fita. Reconhecem-se 23 genótipos G e 31 genótipos P. Dentre os genótipos G detectados até o momento, o G2 atua como um dos mais importantes, estando geralmente associado ao genótipo P[4]. Nos últimos três anos se tem observado em larga escala global a reemergência do genótipo G2, sendo um dos mais detectados nos anos que sucederam a implantação da vacina contra rotavírus, particularmente no Brasil. Este estudo teve como objetivo a caracterização molecular de amostras do tipo G2 obtidas de crianças participantes de estudos em gastroenterites virais na região amazônica, Brasil, no período de 1992 a 2008. Foram selecionadas 53 amostras positivas para rotavírus genótipo G2 que foram sequenciadas para VP7 e 38 para VP4. Inicialmente, as amostras foram genotipadas por RT-PCR e seus produtos purificados, quantificados e sequenciados. As amostras também foram testadas quanto ao perfil de migração dos segmentos de RNA. As sequências obtidas dos genes VP4 e VP7 foram alinhadas e editadas no programa Bioedit (v.6.05) e comparadas a outras sequências de RV registradas no banco de genes utilizando o programa BLAST. A árvore filogenética foi feita utilizando o programa Mega 2.1. Do total de 53 amostras sequenciadas para o gene VP7, a análise filogenética revelou a existência de duas linhagens (II e III) e três sublinhagens (IIa, IIc, IId) que circularam em períodos diferentes na população. Amostras das sub-linhagem IIa e IIc apresentaram mutação na posição no aminoácido da posição 96 (Asp/ Asn) . Essa modificação pode resultar em uma alteração conformacional dos epítopos reconhecidos por anticorpos neutralizantes. As linhagens de G2 que circularam em Belém foram idênticas àquelas de outros Estados da região amazônica envolvidos no estudo. O gene VP[4] foi sequenciado na região da VP8*, sendo 36 pertencentes do genótipo P[4] e 3 ao P[6]. No genótipo P[4] foi identificada a circulação de duas linhagens, P[4]-4 ocorrendo nos anos de 1998-2000, e P[4]-5 que circulou nos períodos de 1993-1994 e 2006-2008. Nossos resultados reforçam dados de ocorrência continental que evidenciam a reemergência do genótipo G2 com a variante gênica IIc, a qual se estabeleceu na população em associação com o genótipo P[4]-5. A grande homologia entre as cepas de G2 que circularam entre os diferentes estados envolvidos no estudo sugere que as mutações registradas ultrapassaram barreiras geográficas e temporais.

O programa mais educação em Abaetetuba: análise do macrocampo esporte e lazer na escola Esmerina Bou Habib (2008/2012)

Através do presente estudo, procura-se analisar o Programa Mais Educação a partir do referencial Marxiano e marxista. Procura-se analisar as categorias Educação Integral, Esporte e Lazer, analisar relações das categorias com a discussão sobre o neoliberalismo, a sua influência no Estado brasileiro, além de marcos legais e contextuais. O processo de pesquisa ocorreu através da revisão bibliográfica, desenvolvida com base em materiais já elaborados, constituídos principalmente de livros e artigos científicos. Realizou-se o trato do cruzamento das primeiras abstrações sobre o objeto e o cruzamento da pesquisa documental com a revisão bibliográfica e com a pesquisa de campo. O nosso objetivo geral nesta pesquisa foi analisar os limites e as possibilidades na implementação do Esporte e do Lazer no PME e a problemática central da pesquisa: quais os limites e as possibilidades na implementação do Esporte e do Lazer no Programa Mais Educação na política local, nacional e na escola Esmerina Bou Habib de Abaetetuba/Pará (2008 - 2012)? Analisamos que o Programa Mais Educação tem sido um programa limitado à lógica do capital e do seu processo reprodutivo para o mercado de trabalho e a socialização de valores necessários a esta ordem. Por outro lado seria necessária uma Educação Integral e em tempo integral, na qual a construção de espaços deve ser prioridade, como uma alternativa para favorecer a escola pública, ou seja, é necessário mais tempo em uma nova escola. Percebeu-se que o Programa Mais Educação ainda não teve êxito em avançar na superação da escola de um turno para a construção de uma escola de dois turnos, os investimentos não são suficientes, a lógica da produtividade está presente no programa, inclusive na prioridade dada ao Esporte de rendimento. Percebeu-se que o macrocampo Esporte e Lazer é muito solicitado pelos alunos e que há uma aproximação entre as atividades deste macrocampo e as aulas de educação física, sendo que esta aproximação não deve ocasionar a substituição das aulas de educação física, caso que foi percebido durante a pesquisa de campo. Analisamos que a Educação Integral e em tempo integral será importante para a melhoria da educação no Brasil em termos estruturais, assim como uma melhor organização do trabalho pedagógico, valorização do processo educativo e do professor, aumentar as possibilidades educativas, ou seja, para o processo educativo ser mais qualitativo, crítico e dialético para a formação da classe trabalhadora. Contudo, entende-se que o Esporte deve ser tratado, a partir do paradigma da cultura corporal, como um elemento cultural humano deve ser socializado na escola no contexto da formação do novo homem e da nova mulher. Entende-se que a socialização do conhecimento sistematizado é necessária para a organização da classe trabalhadora em sua luta revolucionária. Nesse sentido, a educação escolar tem papel fundamental na luta pelo socialismo. Contudo, acreditou-se na relevância desta pesquisa, do ponto de vista social, por se estar propondo uma análise ampla e crítica que deverá dar conta do trato científico do objeto e das categorias de análise, afinado com perspectivas substancialmente transformadoras. Pretende-se que esta pesquisa possa contribuir para o debate das categorias Educação Integral, Esporte e Lazer.

A crise financeira de 2008: os discursos e as estratégias do governo e dos fundos de pensão

This article focuses on the financial crisis beginning in 2008. Drawing on the work of Lebaron (2010; 2011) and (Grün 2010), the study seeks to grasp the cognitive dimension of the crisis through the discourses produced (and reproduced) by members of the Brazilian government involved in controlling the crisis and by the pension fund sector and its strategies. The method was based on analysis of documents produced by the pension fund sector and the Lula Administration in 2008 and the spinoffs of the discourses and strategies. The text indicates the construction of a discourse emphasizing the importance of state regulation (as opposed to market self-regulation) and the central role of pension funds during the process, since they partially abandoned government bonds and migrated to productive investment, in alliance with the private equity sector, especially in financing construction works under the Growth Acceleration Program.

Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida: estratégia no enfrentamento da crise de 2008

This work aims to present an analysis of the Minha Casa Minha Vida, proposed by Lula's government in 2009, highlighting their main impacts for the country in the period following the international financial crisis of 2008, in addition to demonstrating the perception of different inserted agents in context. We argue that the Program implementation was a strategy for the country to overcome the crisis, moving the economy to stimulate consumption, investment and job creation. This work also analyzes the Lula government, responsible for program implementation, and seeks to show its characteristic points that led to the success of the Minha Casa Minha Vida. Finally, we demonstrate that the 2008 crisis has a side still little explored, that goes beyond the economic data that generated and can be regarded as the mainstream economic thinking crisis
