Several commercial titania photocatalyst powders were formed into thin (ca. 350 mu m), 25 mm diameter ceramic wafers, sputter deposited with Pt on one side. The activities of each of the ceramic wafers were tested for hydrogen and oxygen evolution from aqueous sacrificial systems. The commercial sample PC50 (Millennium Chemicals, UK) yielded reproducible ceramic wafers with high activity for water photoreduction. Many of the ceramic wafers displayed low water photo-oxidation activities; however, these were greatly increased with addition of a NiO co-catalyst. In a selected case, hydrogen evolution activity was compared between a PC50 wafer and an identical weight of platinised PC50 powder suspension. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The observed adsorption of acid orange 7, AO7(-), on P25 titania over a range of pH values (pH 2-8) gives a good fit to data generated using a charge distribution, multisite complexation, i.e. CD-MUSIC, model, modified for aggregated dye adsorption. For this system the model predicts that both the apparent dark Langmuir adsorption constant. K-L, and the number of adsorption sites, n(o), increase with decreasing pH, and are negligible above pH 6. At pH 2 the CD-MUSIC model predicts the fraction of singly co-ordinated sites occupied by the dye,f(AO7), is ca. 32% under the in situ monitoring experimental conditions used in this work to study the photocatalytic bleaching of AO7(-) under UV light illumination ([TiO2] = 20 mgdm(-3); [AO7(-)](total) = 4.86 x 10(-5) M). Although AO7(-) adsorption on P25 titania is insignificant above pH 6 and increases almost linearly and markedly below this pH, the measured initial rate of bleaching of AO7(-), photocatalysed by titania using UV appears to only increase modestly (

The initial kinetics of the oxidation of 4-chlorophenol, 4-CP, photocatalyzed by titania films and aqueous dispersions were studied as a function of oxygen partial pressure, P-O2, and incident light intensity, I. The reaction conditions were such that the kinetics were independent of [4-CP] but strongly dependent on PO2-a situation that allowed investigation of the less-often studied kinetics of oxygen reduction. The observed kinetics fit a pseudo-steady-state model in which the oxygen is Langmuir-adsorbed on the titania photocatalyst particles before being reduced by photogenerated electrons. The maximum rate of photocatalysis depends directly on I-beta, where, beta = 1 for films and 0.7 for dispersions of titania, indicating that the kinetics are dominated by the surface reactions of the photogenerated electrons and holes for the films and by direct recombination for the powder dispersions. Using the pseudo-first-order model, for both titania films and dispersions, the apparent Langmuir adsorption constant, K-LH, derived from a Langmuir-Hinshelwood analysis of the kinetics, appears to be largely independent of incident light intensity, unlike KLH for 4-CP Consequently, similar values are obtained for the Langmuir adsorption constant, K-ads, extracted from a pseudosteady-state analysis of the kinetics for oxygen on TiO2 dispersions and films in aqueous solution (i.e., ca. 0.0265 +/- 0.005 kPa(-1)), and for both films and dispersions, oxygen appears to be weakly adsorbed on TiO2 compared with 4-CP, at a rate that would take many minutes to reach equilibrium. The value of Kads for oxygen on titania particles dispersed in solution is ca. 4.7 times lower than that reported for the dark Langmuir adsorption isotherm; possible causes for this difference are discussed. A number of different electron acceptors are tested for efficacy in the oxidation of water to oxygen, photocatalysed by titanium dioxide. The highly UV-absorbing metal ion electron acceptors, Ce4+ and Fe3+, appear ineffective at high concentration (10(-2) M), due to UV-screening, but more effective at lower concentrations (10(-3) M). The metal-depositing electron acceptor, Ag+, is initially effective, but loses activity upon prolonged irradiation due to metal deposition which promotes electron-hole recombination as well as UV-screening the titania particles. Most striking of the electron acceptors tested is persulfate, particularly in alkaline solution (0.1 M NaOH). The kinetics of the photo-oxidation of water by persulfate, photocatalysed by titania are studied as a function of pH, [S2O82-] and incident light intensity (I). The initial rate of water oxidation increases with pH, is directly proportional to the concentration of persulfate present and depends upon I-0.6. The TiO2/alkaline persulfate photosystem is robust and shows very little evidence of photochemical wear upon repeated irradiation. The results of this work are discussed with regard to previous work in this area and current mechanistic thinking. The formal quantum efficiency of the TiO2/alkaline persulfate photosystem was estimated as ca. 2%. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thick paste TiO2 films are prepared and tested for photocatalytic and photoinduced superhydrophilic (PSH) activity. The films are effective photocatalysts for the destruction of stearic acid using near or far UV and all the sol-gel films tested exhibited a quantum yield for this process of typically 0.15 %. These quantum yields are significantly greater (4-8-fold) than those for titania films produced by an APCVD technique, including the commercial self-cleaning glass product Activ(TM). The films are mechanically robust and optically clear and, as photocatalysts for stearic acid removal, are photochemically stable and reproducible. The kinetics of stearic acid photomineralisation are zero order with an activation energy of ca. 2.5 Kj mol(-1). All titania films tested, including those produced by APCVD, exhibit PSH. The light-induced fall, and dark recovery, in the water droplet contact angle made with titania paste films are similar in profile shape to those described by others for thin titania films produced by a traditional sol-gel route. The results of a study of the oxidative mineralisation of 4-CP by oxygen, sensitised by thin films of Degussa P25 TiO2, are reported. The films are used under conditions in which the kinetics of photomineralisation are independent of mass transfer effects and stable towards repeated irradiation. Using a TiO2 film, the process goes through the same mechanism as a TiO2 dispersion, generating the same intermediates, namely: 4-chlorocatechol and hydroquinone. The kinetics of photomineralisation show clear differences between a TiO2 film and a dispersion. With TiO2 films the initial rate of photomineralisation is strongly dependent upon photocatalyst loading, (units; g dm(-3)) reaching a distinct maximum, which appears to be associated with the formation of a monolayer of aggregated particles - the diameter of the aggregated particles is estimated as 0.44 mu m. A simple 2D model is presented to help illustrate the features of such a system. With TiO2 dispersions the rate usually reaches a plateau at ca. 0.5 g dm(-3) of TiO2. For TiO2 films the initial rate depends directly upon the incident light intensity, implying that the photocatalytically active particles are under low illumination conditions, partially shielded by the other particles making up each aggregated particle. In contrast, with TiO2 dispersions R-i depends upon I-0.64, implying that the different light intensities used spanned both the high (R(i)proportional to I-1/2) and low (R(i)proportional to I) intensity kinetic regions. The kinetics of photomineralisation of 4-CP, sensitised by TiO2 films obey the same Langmuir-Hinshelwood expressions as found in most semiconductor photocatalyst work conducted with TiO2 dispersions. However, in a study of the variation R-i as a function of [4-CP] and [O-2] the values for the maximum rates were larger, and those for the apparent Langmuir adsorption coefficients were smaller, than those found for TiO2 dispersions. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of feedback by Ca?-sensitive plasma-membrane ion channels in endothelin 1 (Et1) signaling in vitro and in vivo. Methods. Et1 responses were imaged from Fluo-4-loaded smooth muscle in isolated segments of rat retinal arteriole using two-dimensional (2-D) confocal laser microscopy. Vasoconstrictor responses to intravitreal injections of Et1 were recorded in the absence and presence of appropriate ion channel blockers using fluorescein angiograms imaged using a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope. Results. Et1 (10 nM) increased both basal [Ca?](i) and the amplitude and frequency of Ca?-waves in retinal arterioles. The Ca?-activated Cl?-channel blockers DIDS and 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (9AC) blocked Et1-induced increases in wave frequency, and 9AC also inhibited the increase in amplitude. Iberiotoxin, an inhibitor of large conductance (BK) Ca?-activated K?-channels, increased wave amplitude in the presence of Et1 but had no effect on frequency. None of these drugs affected basal [Ca?](i). The voltage-operated Ca?-channel inhibitor nimodipine inhibited wave frequency and amplitude and also lowered basal [Ca?](i) in the presence of Et1. Intravitreal injection of Et1 caused retinal arteriolar vasoconstriction. This was inhibited by DIDS but not by iberiotoxin or penitrem A, another BK-channel inhibitor. Conclusions. Et1 evokes increases in the frequency of arteriolar Ca?-waves in vitro, resulting in vasoconstriction in vivo. These responses, initiated by release of stored Ca?, also require positive feedback via Ca?-activated Cl?-channels and L-type Ca?-channels.
