The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) has become the "standard" for deflection testing of pavements. Iowa has used a Road Rater since 1976 to obtain deflection information. A correlation between the Road Rater and the FWD was needed if Iowa was going to continue with the Road Rater. Comparative deflection testing was done using a Road Rater Model 400 and a Pynatest 8000 FWD on 26 pavement sections. The SHRP contractor, Braun Intertec Pavement, Inc., provided the FWD testing. The r^2 for the linear correlations ranged from 0.90 to 0.99 for the different pavement types and sensor locations.

The relationship between pressure induced changes on individual proteins and selected quality parameters in bovine longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle was studied. Pressures ranging from 200 to 600 MPa at 20 °C were used. High pressure processing (HPP) at pressures above 200 MPa induced strong modifications of protein solubility, meat colour and water holding capacity (WHC). The protein profiles of non-treated and pressure treated meat were observed using two dimensional electrophoresis. Proteins showing significant differences in abundance among treatments were identified by mass spectrometry. Pressure levels above 200 MPa strongly modified bovine LTL proteome with main effects being insolubilisation of sarcoplasmic proteins and solubilisation of myofibrillar proteins. Sarcoplasmic proteins were more susceptible to HPP effects than myofibrillar. Individual protein changes were significantly correlated with protein solubility, L*, b* and WHC, providing further insights into the mechanistic processes underlying HPP influence on quality and providing the basis for the future development of protein markers to assess the quality of processed meats.

Medulloblastoma is the most frequent malignant paediatric brain tumour. The activation of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway occurs in 10-15% of medulloblastomas and has been recently described as a marker for favourable patient outcome. We report a series of 72 paediatric medulloblastomas evaluated for beta-catenin protein expression, CTNNB1 mutations, and comparative genomic hybridization. Gene expression profiles were also available in a subset of 40 cases. Immunostaining of beta-catenin showed extensive nuclear staining (>50% of the tumour cells) in six cases and focal nuclear staining (<10% of cells) in three cases. The other cases either exhibited a signal strictly limited to the cytoplasm (58 cases) or were negative (five cases). CTNNB1 mutations were detected in all beta-catenin extensively nucleopositive cases. The expression profiles of these cases documented strong activation of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway. Remarkably, five out of these six tumours showed a complete loss of chromosome 6. In contrast, cases with focal nuclear beta-catenin staining, as well as tumours with negative or cytoplasmic staining, never demonstrated CTNNB1 mutation, Wnt/beta-catenin pathway activation or chromosome 6 loss. Patients with extensive nuclear staining were significantly older at diagnosis and were in continuous complete remission after a mean follow-up of 75.7 months (range 27.5-121.2 months) from diagnosis. All three patients with focal nuclear staining of beta-catenin died within 36 months from diagnosis. Altogether, these data confirm and extend previous observations that CTNNB1-mutated tumours represent a distinct molecular subgroup of medulloblastomas with favourable outcome, indicating that therapy de-escalation should be considered. International consensus on the definition criteria of this distinct medulloblastoma subgroup should be achieved.

It is known that post-movement beta synchronization (PMBS) is involved both in active inhibition and in sensory reafferences processes. The aim of this study was examine the temporal and spatial dynamics of the PMBS involved during multi-limb coordination task. We investigated post-switching beta synchronization (assigned PMBS) using time-frequency and source estimations analyzes. Participants (n = 17) initiated an auditory-paced bimanual tapping. After a 1500 ms preparatory period, an imperative stimulus required to either selectively stop the left while maintaining the right unimanual tapping (Switch condition: SWIT) or to continue the bimanual tapping (Continue condition: CONT). PMBS significantly increased in SWIT compared to CONT with maximal difference within right central region in broad-band 14âeuro"30 Hz and within left central region in restricted-band 22âeuro"26 Hz. Source estimations localized these effects within right pre-frontal cortex and left parietal cortex, respectively. A negative correlation showed that participants with a low percentage of errors in SWIT had a large PMBS amplitude within right parietal and frontal cortices. This study shows for the first time simultaneous PMBS with distinct functions in different brain regions and frequency ranges. The left parietal PMBS restricted to 22âeuro"26 Hz could reflect the sensory reafferences of the right hand tapping disrupted by the switching. In contrast, the right pre-frontal PMBS in a broad-band 14âeuro"30 Hz is likely reflecting the active inhibition of the left hand stopped. Finally, correlations between behavioral performance and the magnitude of the PMBS suggest that beta oscillations can be viewed as a marker of successful active inhibition.

Purpose: 1. To review Ct features suggestive of saprophytic aspergillosis (aspergilloma) and to correlate them with the final pathological results. 2. To illustrate the wide range of differential diagnosis. Methods and materials: The electronic database of our department from 1995 to 2007 revealed CT reports of 48 patients that had been considered very suggestive of aspergilloma. Two radiologists with 6 and 12 years experience in thoracic radiology jointly reviewed the corresponding CT features including ancillary findings and the underlying lung diseases and correlated them with the final pathological diagnosis. Results: Forty patients could be included in the study (12 women, mean age 52), while in 8 patients there was no adequate clinical follow-up. In 17 patients the diagnosis "mycetoma" due to aspergillus fumigatus infection was confirmed, either by surgery, biopsy or bronchoscopy. In 23 patients, differential diagnoses were found, such as cavitating bronchial carcinoma (n = 7), bacterial abscess (n = 3), typical (n = 2) and atypical (n = 2) tuberculosis, as well as inflammatory changes due to mucoviscidosis (n = 1), Wegener's disease (n = 1) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n = 3). Fibromyxoide hamartoma, lung infarction and bronchomucocele were responsible for the typical CT feature in one patient each. Conclusion: 1. The typical CT feature suggesting mycetoma is softtissue proliferation within a pre-existing wall-thickened lung cavity, oten even considered "pathognomonic". However, this diagnosis was finally confirmed by surgery or laboratory findings in less than 50% of patients only. 2. Since differential diagnoses are very large, not only including cavitating lung cancer and tuberculosis, the individual underlying lung disease needs strongly being taken into account often giving the best clue for the correct diagnosis.

The determination of gross alpha, gross beta and 226Ra activity in natural waters is useful in a wide range of environmental studies. Furthermore, gross alpha and gross beta parameters are included in international legislation on the quality of drinking water [Council Directive 98/83/EC].1 In this work, a low-background liquid scintillation counter (Wallac, Quantulus 1220) was used to simultaneously determine gross alpha, gross beta and 226Ra activity in natural water samples. Sample preparation involved evaporation to remove 222Rn and its short-lived decay daughters. The evaporation process concentrated the sample ten-fold. Afterwards, a sample aliquot of 8 mL was mixed with 12 mL of Ultima Gold AB scintillation cocktail in low-diffusion vials. In this study, a theoretical mathematical model based on secular equilibrium conditions between 226Ra and its short-lived decay daughters is presented. The proposed model makes it possible to determine 226Ra activity from two measurements. These measurements also allow determining gross alpha and gross beta simultaneously. To validate the proposed model, spiked samples with different activity levels for each parameter were analysed. Additionally, to evaluate the model's applicability in natural water, eight natural water samples from different parts of Spain were analysed. The eight natural water samples were also characterised by alpha spectrometry for the naturally occurring isotopes of uranium (234U, 235U and 238U), radium (224Ra and 226Ra), 210Po and 232Th. The results for gross alpha and 226Ra activity were compared with alpha spectrometry characterization, and an acceptable concordance was obtained.

An assay for the simultaneous analysis of pharmaceutical compounds and their metabolites from micro-whole blood samples (i.e. 5 microL) was developed using an on-line dried blood spot (on-line DBS) device coupled with hydrophilic interaction/reversed-phase (HILIC/RP) LC/MS/MS. Filter paper is directly integrated to the LC device using a homemade inox desorption cell. Without any sample pretreatment, analytes are desorbed from the paper towards an automated system of valves linking a zwitterionic-HILIC column to an RP C18 column. In the same run, the polar fraction is separated by the zwitterionic-HILIC column while the non-polar fraction is eluted on the RP C18. Both fractions are detected by IT-MS operating in full scan mode for the survey scan and in product ion mode for the dependant scan using an ESI source. The procedure was evaluated by the simultaneous qualitative analysis of four probes and their relative phase I and II metabolites spiked in whole blood. In addition, the method was successfully applied to the in vivo monitoring of buprenorphine metabolism after the administration of an intraperitoneal injection of 30 mg/kg on adult female Wistar rat.

The final year project came to us as an opportunity to get involved in a topic which has appeared to be attractive during the learning process of majoring in economics: statistics and its application to the analysis of economic data, i.e. econometrics. Moreover, the combination of econometrics and computer science is a very hot topic nowadays, given the Information Technologies boom in the last decades and the consequent exponential increase in the amount of data collected and stored day by day. Data analysts able to deal with Big Data and to find useful results from it are verydemanded in these days and, according to our understanding, the work they do, although sometimes controversial in terms of ethics, is a clear source of value added both for private corporations and the public sector. For these reasons, the essence of this project is the study of a statistical instrument valid for the analysis of large datasets which is directly related to computer science: Partial Correlation Networks. The structure of the project has been determined by our objectives through the development of it. At first, the characteristics of the studied instrument are explained, from the basic ideas up to the features of the model behind it, with the final goal of presenting SPACE model as a tool for estimating interconnections in between elements in large data sets. Afterwards, an illustrated simulation is performed in order to show the power and efficiency of the model presented. And at last, the model is put into practice by analyzing a relatively large data set of real world data, with the objective of assessing whether the proposed statistical instrument is valid and useful when applied to a real multivariate time series. In short, our main goals are to present the model and evaluate if Partial Correlation Network Analysis is an effective, useful instrument and allows finding valuable results from Big Data.As a result, the findings all along this project suggest the Partial Correlation Estimation by Joint Sparse Regression Models approach presented by Peng et al. (2009) to work well under the assumption of sparsity of data. Moreover, partial correlation networks are shown to be a very valid tool to represent cross-sectional interconnections in between elements in large data sets. The scope of this project is however limited, as there are some sections in which deeper analysis would have been appropriate. Considering intertemporal connections in between elements, the choice of the tuning parameter lambda, or a deeper analysis of the results in the real data application are examples of aspects in which this project could be completed. To sum up, the analyzed statistical tool has been proved to be a very useful instrument to find relationships that connect the elements present in a large data set. And after all, partial correlation networks allow the owner of this set to observe and analyze the existing linkages that could have been omitted otherwise.

Purpose: To assess the visibility and the features of ECUATS on 3.0-T MRI studies, and evaluate their correlation with tendinosis. Methods and materials: Our retrospective study was approved by IRB, with waiver of informed consent. Fifty wrist MRI and 48 MR arthrographies from 98 patients (55 males, 43 females, mean age 42.3 years) performed between January and November 2009 on 3.0-T units were reviewed. Images (transverse T1, T2, FS Gd T1 and VIBE) were independently analyzed by two radiologists, and a consensus reached with a third reader in case of disagreement. The visibility of ECUATS was assessed on each available transverse sequence. When present, ECUATS' origins, diameters and insertions were noted. ECU tendinosis was also evaluated. Inter-rater agreement was assessed using Cohen's Kappa coefficient. Results: ECUATS observed prevalence was 23.5% (23/98). ECUATS were more frequently noted on the VIBE sequence, with a good inter-rater agreement (Kappa = 0.72). Origins were noted in 95.7% of cases: 3 were at the level of, and 20 distal to ECU subsheath. Insertions were seen in 43.5%: 2 were on 5th metacarpal bone, 8 on extensor apparatus of 5th finger. ECUATS mean shortest and longest diameters were 0.54 and 0.85 mm respectively. ECU tendinosis was statistically more frequently noted in patients with ECUATS (p <0.05). Conclusion: ECUATS are readily visible on 3.0-T MRI studies, especially on transverse GRE VIBE images. ECU tendinosis is more frequently noted in patients bearing ECUATS.

Background: In longitudinal studies where subjects experience recurrent incidents over a period of time, such as respiratory infections, fever or diarrhea, statistical methods are required to take into account the within-subject correlation. Methods: For repeated events data with censored failure, the independent increment (AG), marginal (WLW) and conditional (PWP) models are three multiple failure models that generalize Cox"s proportional hazard model. In this paper, we revise the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of all three models under simulated scenarios with varying degrees of within-subject correlation, censoring levels, maximum number of possible recurrences and sample size. We also study the methods performance on a real dataset from a cohort study with bronchial obstruction. Results: We find substantial differences between methods and there is not an optimal method. AG and PWP seem to be preferable to WLW for low correlation levels but the situation reverts for high correlations. Conclusions: All methods are stable in front of censoring, worsen with increasing recurrence levels and share a bias problem which, among other consequences, makes asymptotic normal confidence intervals not fully reliable, although they are well developed theoretically.

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method is presented which allows the simultaneous determination of the plasma concentrations of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors citalopram, paroxetine, sertraline, and their pharmacologically active N-demethylated metabolites (desmethylcitalopram, didesmethylcitalopram, and desmethylsertraline) after derivatization with the reagent N-methyl-bis(trifluoroacetamide). No interferences from endogenous compounds are observed following the extraction of plasma samples from six different human subjects. The standard curves are linear over a working range of 10-500 ng/mL for citalopram, 10-300 ng/mL for desmethylcitalopram, 5-60 ng/mL for didesmethylcitalopram, 20-400 ng/mL for sertraline and desmethylsertraline, and 10-200 ng/mL for paroxetine. Recoveries measured at three concentrations range from 81 to 118% for the tertiary amines (citalopram and the internal standard methylmaprotiline), 73 to 95% for the secondary amines (desmethylcitalopram, paroxetine and sertraline), and 39 to 66% for the primary amines (didesmethylcitalopram and desmethylsertraline). Intra- and interday coefficients of variation determined at three concentrations range from 3 to 11% for citalopram and its metabolites, 4 to 15% for paroxetine, and 5 to 13% for sertraline and desmethylsertraline. The limits of quantitation of the method are 2 ng/mL for citalopram and paroxetine, 1 ng/mL for sertraline, and 0.5 ng/mL for desmethylcitalopram, didesmethylcitalopram, and desmethylsertraline. No interferences are noted from 20 other psychotropic drugs. This sensitive and specific method can be used for single-dose pharmacokinetics. It is also useful for therapeutic drug monitoring of these three drugs and could possibly be adapted for the quantitation of the two other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on the market, namely fluoxetine and fluvoxamine.

The simultaneous etherification of isobutene and isoamylenes with ethanol has been studied using macroreticu-lar acid ion-exchange resins as catalyst. Most of the experiments were carried out over Amberlyst-35. In addition,Amberlyst-15 and Purolite CT-275 were also tested. Chemical equilibrium of four chemical reactions was studied:ethyl tert-butyl ether formation, tert-amyl ethyl ether formation from isoamylenes (2-methyl-1-butene and 2-methyl-2-butene) and isomerization reaction between both isoamylenes. Equilibrium data were obtained in a batchwisestirred tank reactor operated at 2.0 MPa and within the temperature range from 323 to 353 K. Experimental molarstandard enthalpy and entropy changes of reaction were determined for each reaction. From these data, the molarenthalpy change of formation of ethyl tert-butyl ether and tert-amyl ethyl ether were estimated. Besides, the chemical equilibrium between both diisobutene dimers, 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene and 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentene, wasevaluated. A good agreement between thermodynamic results for the simultaneous etherification carried out in thiswork and those obtained for the isolated ethyl tert-butyl ether and tert-amyl ethyl ether systems was obtained.
