Online education is a new teaching and learning medium with few current guidelines for faculty, administrators or students. Its rapid growth over the last decade has challenged academic institutions to keep up with the demand, while also providing a quality education. Our understanding of the factors that determine quality and effective online learning experiences that lead to student learning outcomes is still evolving. There is a lack of consensus on the effectiveness of online versus face-to-face education in the current research. The U.S. Department of Education conducted a meta-analysis in 2009 and concluded that student-learning outcomes in online courses were equal to and, often times, better than face-to-face traditional courses. Subsequent research has found contradictory findings, and further inquiry is necessary. The purpose of this embedded mixed methods design research study is to further our understanding of the factors that create quality and successful educational outcomes in an online course. To achieve this, the first phase of this study measured and compared learning outcomes in an online and in class graduate-level legal administration course. The second phase of the study entailed interviews with those students in both the online and face-to-face sections to understand their perspectives on the factors contributing to learning outcomes. Six themes emerged from the qualitative findings: convenience, higher order thinking, discussions, professor engagement, professor and student interaction, and face-to-face interaction. Findings from this study indicate the factors students perceive as contributing to learning outcomes in an online course are consistent among all students and are supported in the existing literature. Higher order thinking, however, emerged as a stronger theme than indicated in the current research, and the face-to-face nature of the traditional classroom may be more an issue of familiarity than a factor contributing to learning outcomes. As education continues to reach new heights and developments in technology advance, the factors found to contribute to student learning outcomes will be refined and enhanced. These developments will continue to transform the ways in which we deliver and receive knowledge in both traditional and online classrooms. While there is a growing body of research on online education, the field’s evolution has unsettled earlier findings and posed new areas to investigate.

Introdução: Entre as estratégias de ensino e aprendizagem utilizadas nas práticas pedagógicas, a Problem Based Learning (PBL) (Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas) é utilizada desde 1960, em especial nos cursos de Medicina. Mesmo sendo uma estratégia valiosa, um dos seus obstáculos é a pouca prática dos alunos em atividades autodirigidas, pesquisa e construção coletiva do conhecimento. Objetivo: Rastrear elementos constitutivos da PBL através de dados colhidos em artigos pesquisados em sítios de divulgação científica; Avaliar, nos estudos selecionados, os aspectos positivos e negativos que estejam relacionados com a metodologia do Sistema PBL aplicada ao ensino médico no Brasil. Metodologia: Estudo bibliográfico de 13 textos utilizando um modelo de desconstrução, denominada Análise Textual Discursiva (ATD) que consiste em: transformação dos artigos em pedaços menores; análise textual; identificação de padrões convergentes e divergentes em relação a PBL; organização e síntese dos dados, culminando com a elaboração de estratégia adaptativa da PBL para o curso de Medicina. Resultados: Foram encontradas 116 citações que convergiam para referências positivos acerca da metodologia PBL e 40 citações que divergiam acerca dos pontos positivos. Os aspectos positivos como o desenvolvimento de atitudes e habilidades; desenvolvimento de competências anteriores ao curso; efeitos positivos depois de terminada a graduação, como autonomia de estudo e a articulação entre currículo e realidade profissional, representam pontos a serem reforçados na aula. Em contraponto, foi observado que dentre os negativos a não compreensão do papel do professor como tutor; necessidade de conteúdo formal tradicional pelos alunos e a expectativa que o professor retire as suas dúvidas são pontos a serem evitados. Conclusões: A metodologia PBL deverá servir como metodologia ativa para aproveitar ao máximo as habilidades que os alunos já apresentam, potencializando o aprendizado na educação médica em sala de aula. The international perspectives on these issues are especially valuable in an increasingly connected, but still institutionally and administratively diverse world. The research addressed in several chapters in this volume includes issues around technical standards bodies like EpiDoc and the TEI, engaging with ways these standards are implemented, documented, taught, used in the process of transcribing and annotating texts, and used to generate publications and as the basis for advanced textual or corpus research. Other chapters focus on various aspects of philological research and content creation, including collaborative or community driven efforts, and the issues surrounding editorial oversight, curation, maintenance and sustainability of these resources. Research into the ancient languages and linguistics, in particular Greek, and the language teaching that is a staple of our discipline, are also discussed in several chapters, in particular for ways in which advanced research methods can lead into language technologies and vice versa and ways in which the skills around teaching can be used for public engagement, and vice versa. A common thread through much of the volume is the importance of open access publication or open source development and distribution of texts, materials, tools and standards, both because of the public good provided by such models (circulating materials often already paid for out of the public purse), and the ability to reach non-standard audiences, those who cannot access rich university libraries or afford expensive print volumes. Linked Open Data is another technology that results in wide and free distribution of structured information both within and outside academic circles, and several chapters present academic work that includes ontologies and RDF, either as a direct research output or as essential part of the communication and knowledge representation. Several chapters focus not on the literary and philological side of classics, but on the study of cultural heritage, archaeology, and the material supports on which original textual and artistic material are engraved or otherwise inscribed, addressing both the capture and analysis of artefacts in both 2D and 3D, the representation of data through archaeological standards, and the importance of sharing information and expertise between the several domains both within and without academia that study, record and conserve ancient objects. Almost without exception, the authors reflect on the issues of interdisciplinarity and collaboration, the relationship between their research practice and teaching and/or communication with a wider public, and the importance of the role of the academic researcher in contemporary society and in the context of cutting edge technologies. How research is communicated in a world of instant- access blogging and 140-character micromessaging, and how our expectations of the media affect not only how we publish but how we conduct our research, are questions about which all scholars need to be aware and self-critical.

A considerable body of literature suggests that significant psychological barrier and anxiety characterize the teaching and learning process in statistics. This study investigates the incidence of statistics anxiety, the extent to which it can be overcome and the factors that contribute to the process of overcoming it. Self-study and overall teaching quality, amongst others, significantly contributed to this outcome. This study identifies factors contributing to overall teaching quality. The teaching and learning process typified a highly effective communication mechanism based on an appropriate diagnosis of individual needs. This cumulative change resulted from circular causation. It is argued that given appropriate conditions the vicious circle of anxiety can be transformed into a virtuous circle of learning.

This article describes a collaborative and cross-curricula initiative undertaken in the School of Education at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. The project involved developing an integrated approach to providing professional year pre-service secondary teacher education students with experiences that would assist them to develop their knowledge and skills to teach students with special needs in their classrooms. These experiences were undertaken in the authentic teaching and learning context of a post-school literacy program for young adults with intellectual disabilities. In preliminary interviews pre-service teachers revealed that they lacked experience, knowledge and understanding related to teaching students with special needs, and felt that their teacher education program lacked focus in this field. This project was developed in response to these expressed needs. Through participating in the project, pre-service teachers' knowledge and understanding about working with students with diverse learning needs were developed as they undertook real and purposeful tasks in an authentic context.

Background and review context: There has been no rigorous systematic review of the outcomes of early exposure to clinical and community settings in medical education. Objectives of review: (1) Identify published empirical evidence of the effects of early experience in medical education, analyse it, and synthesize conclusions from it. (2) Identify the strengths and limitations of the research effort to date, and identify objectives for future research. Search strategy: Ovid search of. BEI, ERIC, Medline, CIATAHL and EMBASE Additional electronic searches of: Psychinfo, Timelit, EBM reviews, SIGLE, and the Cochrane databases. Hand-searches of: Medical Education, Medical Teacher, Academic Medicine, Teaching and Learning in Medicine, Advances in Health Sciences Education, Journal of Educational Psychology. Criteria: Definitions: Experience: Authentic (real as opposed to simulated) human contact in a social or clinical context that enhances learning of health, illness and/or disease, and the role of the health professional. Early: What would traditionally have been regarded as the preclinical phase, usually the first 2 years. Inclusions: All empirical studies (verifiable, observational data) of early experience in the basic education of health professionals, whatever their design or methodology, including papers not in English. Evidence from other health care professions that could be applied to medicine was included. Exclusions: Not empirical; not early; post-basic; simulated rather than 'authentic' experience. Data collection: Careful validation of selection processes. Coding by two reviewers onto an extensively modified version of the standard BEME coding sheet. Accumulation into an Access database. Secondary coding and synthesis of an interpretation. Headline results: A total of 73 studies met the selection criteria and yielded 277 educational outcomes; 116 of those outcomes (from 38 studies) were rated strong and important enough to include in a narrative synthesis of results; 76% of those outcomes were from descriptive studies and 24% from comparative studies. Early experience motivated and satisfied students of the health professions and helped them acclimatize to clinical environments, develop professionally, interact with patients with more confidence and less stress, develop self-reflection and appraisal skill, and develop a professional identity. It strengthened their learning and made it more real and relevant to clinical practice. It helped students learn about the structure and function of the healthcare system, and about preventive care and the role of health professionals. It supported the learning of both biomedical and behavioural/social sciences and helped students acquire communication and basic clinical skills. There were outcomes for beneficiaries other than students, including teachers, patients, populations, organizations and specialties. Early experience increased recruitment to primary care/rural medical practice, though mainly in US studies which introduced it for that specific purpose as part of a complex intervention. Conclusions: Early experience helps medical students socialize to their chosen profession. It. helps them acquire a range of subject matter and makes their learning more real and relevant. It has potential benefits for other stakeholders, notably teachers and patients. It can influence career choices.

Este trabalho analisa a Divulgação Científica realizada pela Estação Ciência (USP). Os objetivos principais foram: recuperar a história e descrever as atividades desenvolvidas pela instituição; identificar a linguagem usada para a divulgação dos conceitos científicos; verificar o processo de aprendizagem dos alunos (3ª e 4ª séries) de uma escola pública durante e após a visita; observar e analisar como os professores preparam seus alunos antes da visita a Estação Ciência e examinar o comportamento (curiosidade/interesse) do público-alvo na visita ao Centro. A metodologia utilizada foi a de Estudo de Caso juntamente com a técnica de Grupo Focal. O universo da pesquisa foi composto por alunos do Ensino Fundamental I (4ª série), professor responsável e coordenador pedagógico da Escola selecionada, além do diretor e ex-diretor da Estação Ciência, assim como os monitores e coordenadores responsáveis pelas atividades desenvolvidas. A pesquisa concluiu que há dificuldade por parte dos professores em trabalhar conceitos científicos, o que justifica a importância dos Centros de Ciências como apoio pára-didáticos às escolas. No entanto, a Divulgação Científica realizada pela Estação Ciência tem sido pouco aproveitada pelas crianças, já que o conteúdo não é trabalhado de forma aprofundada na escola. Além disso, crianças e professores sentiram falta de um apoio pedagógico maior do Centro à Escola. Criticaram a inadequação da linguagem dos monitores e a escassez de tempo de visita, o que impede que os assuntos sejam trabalhados de forma mais adequada.

A presente pesquisa investiga a formação de professores das ciências e sua perspectiva para o século XXI, a partir da análise das manifestações acadêmico-científicas de docentes doutores pesquisadores em educação científica nas áreas de Biologia, Química, Física, Matemática e Ciências da Natureza. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, cuja narrativa procura contemplar aspectos de formação dessas áreas em meio aos conflitos, embates, especificidades e necessidades do atual contexto educacional. Busco tratar de visões e assumir posições sobre o que os professores das Ciências precisam aprender, pela configuração das tendências de formação e das práticas de ensino e de aprendizagem consideradas no século XX, bem como das projeções do que se põe como desejável para o século XXI. Nesse âmbito, identifico cinco categorias analíticas que são postas a partir de entrevistas junto aos meus sujeitos de pesquisa. Em relação à primeira categoria de pesquisa as tendências apontam que os conteúdos científicos são imprescindíveis, porém não suficientes durante o processo educativo, havendo necessidade de juntar o seu valor formativo. A segunda categoria traz a consideração do aluno no processo de aprender e ensinar ciências. Dentre o que não pode mais ser admissível neste século, a terceira categoria discute a dissociação entre ciência, tecnologia e sociedade atrelada a uma visão fragmentada de ciência. A quarta categoria aponta o que é posto de novidade na formação de professores das ciências, e a quinta categoria põe em discussão as necessidades formativas de professores das ciências para o século XXI. As análises dessas tendências em função dos relatos e entrevistas desses sujeitos de pesquisa são responsáveis pela integração entre o ensinar e o aprender, compartilhando os saberes pedagógicos, filosóficos, sociológicos, científicos. A partir da literatura atual sobre a formação de professores de ciências, procuro dar conta de algumas inquietações que permeiam a investigação e corroboram com uma mudança epistemológica do ensino: Quais aspectos devem ser prioritariamente considerados no âmbito da formação de professores das ciências? Quais as necessidades formativas desses professores? As contribuições acadêmicas a respeito dos saberes profissionais dos professores têm contribuído sobremaneira para o estabelecimento de uma cultura reflexiva em torno da prática docente de forma bastante crítica. Considerando as inúmeras fragilidades em relação à minha própria formação de professora de Química, considerando também as disposições legais e as orientações curriculares das políticas educacionais atuais que incorporam aportes teóricos fundamentais para que a aprendizagem se concretize e considerando ainda que as transformações nos procedimentos pedagógicos não acompanham o desenvolvimento das ciências da educação, este estudo teve com foco de investigação os seguintes problemas: a) os professores de Química que atuam no Ensino Médio estão devidamente formados para enfrentar as exigências colocadas pelos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacional para o Ensino Médio (PCNEM) e a realidade vivida na escola pública? b) O que o professor faz para que o aluno aprenda Química? c) A política de formação do professor de Química dá conta de formar o químico educador? Para obter os dados para responder a estas questões, recorri a uma pesquisa qualitativa de cunho etnográfico, aplicando questionários a um grupo de 12 professores de Química que atuam no Ensino Médio da rede pública estadual da Grande São Paulo. As questões do questionário foram agrupadas em três categorias: aprendizagem de conceitos, aprendizagem de procedimentos e aprendizagem de valores. No anos de 2001, essas categorias foram utilizadas por García Barros e Martinez Losada em pesquisa com professores da educação básica na Espanha, com ênfase nas duas primeiras, para averiguar que tipo de atividades se realiza habitualmente no ensino de Química e para conhecer a importância que os professores respondentes atribuem aos procedimentos que utilizam no processo de ensino. Os dados coletados, analisados à luz de contribuições dos estudiosos que compõem o corpo teórico deste estudo e das propostas contidas nos PCNEM, evidenciam que o saber fazer do professor, como o definem Carvalho e Perez (2002), é fruto de uma formação inicial precária e da quase inexistência de processos de formação continuada na escola.(AU)

Once again this publication is produced to celebrate and promote good teaching and learning support and to offer encouragement to those imaginative and innovative staff who continue to wish to challenge students to learn to maximum effect. It is hoped that others will pick up some good ideas from the articles contained in this volume. We have again changed our approach for this 2007/08 edition (our fifth) of the Aston Business School Good Practice Guide. As before, some contributions were selected from those identifying interesting best practice on their Annual Module Reflection Forms in 2006/2007. Brookes? contribution this year is directly from her annual reflection. Other contributors received HELM (Research Centre in Higher Education Learning and Management) small research grants in 2006/2007. Part of the conditions were for them to write an article for this publication. We have also been less tight on the length of the articles this year. Some contributions are, therefore, on the way to being journal articles. HELM will be working with these authors to help develop these for publication. Looking back over the last five years it is brilliant to see how many different people have contributed over the years and, therefore, how much innovative learning and teaching work has been taking place in ABS over this time. In the first edition we were just pleased for people to write a few pages on their teaching. Now things have changed dramatically. The majority of the articles are grounded in empirical research (some funded by HELM small research grants) and Palmer?s article was produced as part of the University?s Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching. Most encouraging of all, four of this year?s articles have since been developed further and submitted to refereed journals. We await news of publication as we go to press. It is not surprising that how to manage large groups still remains a central theme of the articles, ABS has a large and still growing student body. Essex and Simpson have looked at trying to encourage students to attend taught sessions, on the basis that there is a strong correlation between attendance and higher performance. Their findings are forming the platform of a further study currently being carried out in the Undergraduate Programme. A number of the other articles concentrate on trying to encourage students to engage with study in an innovative way. This is particularly obvious in Shaw?s work. Everyone who has been around campus lately has had evidence that the students on Duncan?s modules have clearly been inspired. I found myself, for example, playing golf in the student dining room as part of this initiative! The articles by Jarzabkowski & Guilietti and Ho involved much larger surveys. This is another first for the Good Practice Guide and marks the first step on what will clearly be larger research efforts for these authors in this area. We look forward to the journal publications which will result from this work. The last articles are the result of HELM?s hosting of the national conference of the Higher Education Academy?s Business, Management, Accounting and Finance (BMAF) Subject Centre Conference in May 2007. Belal and Foster have written about their impressions of the Conference and Andrews has included the paper she gave. The papers on employability and widening participation are the centre of HELM?s current work. In the second volume we mentioned the launch of the School?s Research Centre in Higher Education Learning and Management (HELM). Since then HELM has stimulated a lot of activity across the School (and University) particularly linking research and teaching. A list of the HELM seminars for 2007/2008 is listed as Appendix 1 of this publication. Further details can be obtained from Catherine Foster (c.s.foster@aston.ac.uk), who coordinates the HELM seminars. We have also been working on a list of target journals to guide ABS staff who wish to publish in this area. These are included as Appendix 2 of this publication. The themes covered in this year?s articles are all central to the issues faced by those providing HE teaching and learning opportunities in the 21st Century. Specifically this is providing support and feedback to students in large classes, embracing new uses of technology to encourage active learning and addressing cultural issues in a diverse student population. Michael Grojean and Yves Guillaume used Blackboard™ to give a more interactive learning experience and improve feedback to students. It would be easy for other staff to adopt this approach. Patrick Tissington and Qin Zhou (HELM small research grant holders) were keen to improve the efficiency of student support, as does Roger McDermott. Celine Chew shares her action learning project, completed as part of the Aston University PG Certificate in Teaching and Learning. Her use of Blackboard™ puts emphasis on the learner having to do something to help them meet the learning outcomes. This is what learning should be like, but many of our students seem used to a more passive learning experience, so much needs to be done on changing expectations and cultures about learning. Regina Herzfeldt also looks at cultures. She was awarded a HELM small research grant and carried out some significant new research on cultural diversity in ABS and what it means for developing teaching methods. Her results fit in with what many of us are experiencing in practice. Gina leaves us with some challenges for the future. Her paper certainly needs to be published. This volume finishes with Stuart Cooper and Matt Davies reflecting on how to keep students busy in lectures and Pavel Albores working with students on podcasting. Pavel?s work, which was the result of another HELM small research grant, will also be prepared for publication as a journal article. The students learnt more from this work that any formal lecture and Pavel will be using the approach again this year. Some staff have been awarded HELM small research grants in 2006/07 and these will be published in the next Good Practice Guide. In the second volume we mentioned the launch of the School?s Research Centre in Higher Education Learning and Management (HELM). Since then HELM has stimulated a lot of activity across the School (and University) particularly linking research and teaching. Firstly we have expanded our contributors beyond ABS academics. This year?s articles have also been written by staff from other areas of the University, a PhD student, a post-doctoral researcher and staff working in learning support. We see this as an acknowledgement that the learning environment involves a range of people in the process of student support. We have also expanded the maximum length of the articles from two to five pages, in order to allow greater reflection on the issues. The themes of the papers cluster around issues relating to diversity (widening participation and internationalisation of the student body), imaginative use of new technology (electronic reading on BlackboardTM ) and reflective practitioners, (reflection on rigour and relevance; on how best to train students in research ethics, relevance in the curriculum and the creativity of the teaching process) Discussion of efforts to train the HE teachers of the future looks forward to the next academic year when the Higher Education Academy?s professional standards will be introduced across the sector. In the last volume we mentioned the launch of the School?s Research Centre in Higher Education Learning and Management (HELM). Since then HELM has stimulated a lot of activity across the School (and University) particularly linking research and teaching.
