Dynamics of experimental populations of native and introduced blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae): mathematical modelling and the transition from asymptotic equilibrium to bounded oscillations

The equilibrium dynamics of native and introduced blowflies is modelled using a density-dependent model of population growth that takes into account important features of the life-history in these flies. A theoretical analysis indicates that the product of maximum fecundity and survival is the primary determinant of the dynamics. Cochliomyia macellaria, a blowfly native to the Americas and the introduced Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya putoria, differ in their dynamics in that the first species shows a damping oscillatory behavior leading to a one-point equilibrium, whereas in the last two species population numbers show a two-point limit cycle. Simulations showed that variation in fecundity has a marked effect on the dynamics and indicates the possibility of transitions from one-point equilibrium to bounded oscillations and aperiodic behavior. Variation in survival has much less influence on the dynamics.

IPH response to Department of Health (UK) Standardised Packaging of Tobacco Products

Enhanced tobacco control policies and programmes are an important component of any strategic approach to improving population health and tackling health inequalities. The consultation on standardised packaging of tobacco products in the UK is particularly timely in view of the recent publication of the Ten Year Tobacco Strategy for Northern Ireland (DHSSPS, 2012). In this strategy the Department expressed its support for the introduction of further measures to reduce the influence of tobacco advertising and promotion upon children e.g. the introduction of plain packaging for cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco.  IPH key points •    The extent of tobacco-related harm across the island of Ireland and across the UK is unacceptable. Increasingly comprehensive and effective tobacco-control interventions are required. •    IPH recommends the adoption of option 2: require standardised packaging of tobacco products. •    IPH acknowledges that as plain packaging has not yet been introduced in any country, it is not possible at this time to accurately forecast the extent and nature of this intervention on population level health outcomes in the UK context. •    The proposed approach appears comprehensive in addressing the direct and indirect ways in which elements of tobacco packaging can promote brand appeal and can portray impressions in respect of tobacco-related harm. Consideration should be given to include specific provisions relating to roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco packaging. Any approach needs to be regularly reviewed to take into account attempts to bypass restrictions and evaluate responses in respect of consumer choices. •    IPH considers that the introduction of plain packaging has the potential to support the achievement of the goals set out in the Ten Year Tobacco Control Strategy for Northern Ireland ( DHSSPS, 2012). •    Among children in Northern Ireland who reported trying their first cigarette, around one quarter were aged 11 or under and three quarters were 14 or under when they did so (DHSSPS, 2012).  The very young age of these children is concerning on many levels including their susceptibility to sophisticated branding and marketing techniques linked to tobacco packaging.

Poots launches £18m state-of-the-art Telemonitoring NI service

Health Minister Edwin Poots today marked the roll-out of a ground-breaking hi-tech scheme which will enable more patients to monitor their health in their own homes. Following funding of £18m from the Department of Health, the newly named Centre for Connected Health and Social Care (CCHSC), part of the Public Health Agency, worked in partnership with business consortium TF3to establish the innovative Telemonitoring NI service. The service is now being delivered by the TF3 consortium in partnership with the Health and Social Care Trusts.Remote telemonitoring combines technology and services that enable patients with chronic diseases to test their vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, body weight, temperature, blood glucose and oxygen levels at home on a daily basis. The service will now be rolled out to 3,500 patients across Northern Ireland per annum for a period of six years.Mr Poots today visited the home of Larne pensioner Michael Howard who has Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disorder (COPD) to hear how Telemonitoring NI has changed his life.During the visit Mr Poots said: "Chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and COPD affect around three quarters of people over the age of 75. This is the generation from whom transport and mobility pose the biggest problems. The Telemonitoring NI service will allow thousands to monitor their vital signs without having to leave their own homes."It means that patients are able to understand and manage their condition better. Many say it has improved their confidence and given them peace of mind. With a health professional monitoring each patient's health on a daily basis, there is less need for hospital admission. Carers are also better informed with the pro-active support provided. It means earlier intervention in, and the prevention of, deterioration of condition, acute illness and hospital admissions."Telemonitoring NI is an excellent example of how the Health Service can innovateusing modern technology to deliver a better service for our patients."Eddie Ritson, Programme Director of CCHSC, PHA, said: "The roll-out of Telemonitoring NI represents a significant step towards providing quality care for the growing number of people with heart disease, stroke, some respiratory conditions and diabetes who want to live at home while having their conditions safely managed."This new service will give people more information which combined with timely advice will enable patients to gain more control over their health while supporting them to live independently in their own homes for longer."A patient will take their vital sign measurements at home, usually on a daily basis. and these will automatically be transmited to the Tf3 system. If the patient's readings show signs of deterioration to an unacceptable level, they will be contacted by phone by a nurse working in a central team and if appropriate a healthcare professional in the patient's local Trust will be alerted to enable them to take appropriate action."Families and carers will also benefit from the reassurance that chronic health conditions are being closely monitored on an ongoing basis. The information collected through the service can also be used by doctors, nurses and patients in making decisions on how individual cases should be managed. "Using the service, Mr Howard, 71, who has emphysema - a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath - monitors his vital signs using the new technology every weekday morning. The information is monitored centrally and if readings show signs of deterioration to an unacceptable level, Mr Howard's local healthcare professional is alerted."Taking my readings is such a simple process but one that gives me huge benefits as it is an early warning system to me and also for the specialist nurses in charge of my care. Without the remote telemonitoring I would be running back and forward to the GPs' surgery all the time to have things checked out," he explained."Having my signs monitored by a nurse means any changes in my condition are dealt with immediately and this has prevented me from being admitted to hospital - in the past I've had to spend six days in hospital any time I'm admitted with a chest infection."The telemonitoring is not only reassuring for me, it also gives me more control over managing my own condition and as a result I have less upheaval in my life, and I'm less of a cost to the health care system. Couch Potato to Runner Bean

To coincide with the start of National Obesity Awareness Week, the Public Health Agency is today urging people to take up the challenge 'From Couch Potato to Runner Bean in 10 weeks'.The PHA, in partnership with five local councils in the western area, will roll out a number of community obesity challenges and programmes between now and March.The challenges and programmes focus on building up physical activity in a gradual and healthy way. At the end of the ten week programme, participants will be encouraged to take part in a five kilometre or 10 kilometre walk, jog or run.Colette Brolly, the PHA Lead on Physical Activity, said: "It is hoped the programmes will influence behaviour changes in those who don't currently take part in physical activity. The beginning of a new year is a great time for a new start and a new challenge, and the resolution to get fit and healthy is a fantastic way to start 2014."She added: "Being physically active helps maintain a healthy weight and can reduce the risk of many diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and colon cancer. Being active is also good for your mental health and can lift mood, reduce anxiety and help to protect against depression. ICT Skills Action Plan 2014-2018

In January 2012, in a direct response to specific skills shortages for people with high-level ICT skills, the Department of Education and Skills published a joint Government–industry ICT Action Plan aimed at building the supply of high-level ICT graduates. One of the key measures in the Plan was the roll-out, from March 2012, of more than 800 places on intensive NFQ level 8 higher diploma ICT skills conversion programmes by higher education providers in partnership with industry. In recognition of the ICT and software development skills shortages that continue to exist, a second phase of the ICT Skills Programme was rolled-out in late 2012, with the Higher Education Authority requesting proposals from higher education providers for a further round of specialist programmes aimed at addressing identified ICT and software development skills gaps. From spring 2013, a number of higher education providers are again offering a number of Level 8 Conversion Programmes, in collaboration with industry partners, which will provide graduates from other skills areas with the opportunity to up-skill or re-skill through a 1 year full-time HDip Conversion Programme in core computing/programming, software and data analysis.

Northern Ireland AAA Screening Programme: Professional information pack

The Northern Ireland Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme began in June 2012 and offers AAA screening to all men in their 65th year in Northern Ireland.The aim of the AAA screening programme is to reduce AAA-related mortality by providing systematic, population-based screening. There is evidence of a significant reduction (45%) in mortality from AAA in those men aged between 65 and 79 years who undergo ultrasound screening. Endoglycan mediates malignant leukocyte rolling on e-selectin and signals through SYK and the MAPK pathway

Selectins play a key role regulating leukocyte migration into tissues by mediating leukocyte tethering (capture) and rolling on inflamed endothelium and/or on adherent leukocytes or platelets. During leukocyte rolling, endothelial E- or P-selectin bind to glycoprotein ligands carrying sialyl Lewis χ (sLex) determinant. P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) is a common ligand for L-, P- and E-selectin, which sequentially cooperates with CD44 and E- selectin ligand-1 (ESL-1) to roll on E-selectin. During rolling on endothelial selectins, PSGL-1 and CD44 signal through Src family kinases and Syk, leading to αι_β2 integrin partial activation and slow rolling on intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). Leukocyte exposure to chemokines then leads to firm adhesion. Little information is available on ligands that mediate malignant leukocyte rolling on E- selectin. We defined these ligands on U937 monoblasts by immunoadsorbtion and immunoblotting using mAb raised against CD43, CD44, PSGL-1, sLex/CLA determinants and E-selectin/IgM chimera. Immunoblotting and blot rolling assays demonstrated that PSGL-1, CD43, CD44 and a -125 kDa sLex/CLA positive ligand contribute to support E-seiectin- dependent rolling. This -125 kDa ligand is endoglycan, a member of the CD34 family of sialomucins. Endoglycan was frequently detected by flow cytometry on primary leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma ceils (in -50% of cases). Endoglycan, immunopurified from U937 cells, as well as endoglycan/IgG chimera efficiently supported E-selectin dependent rolling. Membrane fractionation on sucrose gradient demonstrated that endoglycan is expressed in lipid rafts. We tested the hypothesis that it signals, like PSGL-1 and CD44, through Src kinases and the MAPK pathway. Indeed, endoglycan engagement induced Syk and ERK phosphorylation in a iipid raft-dependent manner. Syk activation was dependent on Src kinase activity. Downstream of Syk, endoglycan activated PI3K and Akt as well as Bruton's tyrosine kinase and p38 MAPK. Thus, endoglycan is a ligand for endothelial selectins which may contribute to regulate leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma cell trafficking and interactions with bone marrow microenvironment. - Les sélectines contrôlent la migration tissulaire des leucocytes en assurant leur capture et leur roulement sur l'endothélium vasculaire enflammé et/ou sur des plaquettes ou des leucocytes adhérant à la paroi vasculaire. Lors du roulement leucocytaire, les sélectines endothéliales (E- et P-sélectine) se lient à des ligands porteurs du saccharide sialyl Lewis χ (sLex). PSGL-1 est un ligand commun des sélectines qui coopère avec CD44 et ESL-1 pour permettre la capture et le roulement des neutrophiles. Lorsque PSGL-1 et CD44 se lient aux sélectines endothéliales, elles induisent la phosphorylation des kinases Src et de Syk conduisant à l'activation partielle de l'intégrine aLp2 et au ralentissement des leucocytes sur les sélectines et ICAM-1. Les chimiokines induisent ensuite l'adhésion ferme des leucocytes. Les ligands des sélectines qui assurent le roulement, sur la E-sélectine, des cellules issues d'hémopathies malignes sont peu connus. Nous avons caractérisé ces ligands en les purifiant avec des anticorps dirigés contre CD43, CD44, PSGL-1, sLex/CLA et en utilisant la chimère E-sélectine/IgM. Des tests d'adhésion ont montré que PSGL-1, CD43, CD44 et une glycoprotéine de ~125 kDa soutiennent les interactions cellulaires dépendant de la E- sélectine. Le ligand de -125 kDa a été identifié comme étant l'endoglycan. Il a été détecté, par cytométrie de flux, sur les cellules leucémiques, les cellules de lymphomes ou de myélome multiple, dans ~50% des cas analysés. Sa forme membranaire, immunopurifiée, ou recombinante (endoglycan/lgG) soutient les interactions cellulaires dépendant de la E- sélectine. Nous avons montré qu'il réside dans les rafts lipidiques membranaires puis avons testé l'hypothèse que l'endoglycan, comme PSGL-1 et CD44, induit une signalisation via les kinases de type Src et la voie des MAPK. Nous avons pu observer que son engagement induit la phosphorylation de Syk et de ERK pour autant que la structure des rafts soit préservée. En aval de Syk, l'endoglycan active la PI3K, Akt, Btk et la MAPK p38. Ces résultats montrent que l'endoglycan est un ligand des sélectines endothéliales qui pourrait participer au contrôle du trafic et des interactions des cellules leucémiques, de lymphomes ou de myélomes multiples avec leur microenvironnement. - Le sang est un élément clé du fonctionnement de notre corps. La circulation sanguine permet la communication et le transfert de molécules et cellules entre divers organes. Lors d'une inflammation aiguë due à une réaction allergique, une infection ou une blessure, on observe un oedème local accompagné de rougeur, de chaleur et souvent de douleurs. Au sein des tissus enflammés, on observe des globules blancs (leucocytes) et diverses molécules inflammatoires qui attirent les leucocytes dans les tissus lésés (chimiokines). Le sang est composé de globules rouges, de plaquettes et de leucocytes spécialisés dans les défenses immunes. Pour atteindre le site d'inflammation, les leucocytes doivent quitter la circulation sanguine. Ils utilisent pour cela des molécules d'adhésion présentes à leur surface qui se lient à d'autres molécules d'adhésion de la paroi sanguine. Leurs interactions permettent aux leucocytes de rouler à la surface du vaisseau sanguin. Lorsqu'ils roulent au voisinage d'un site d'inflammation, les leucocytes sont exposés à des chimiokines qui induisent leur arrêt et les dirigent dans les tissus enflammés. Ce processus physiologique est aussi impliqué dans des pathologies telles que l'infarctus, l'artériosclérose ou la thrombose. Il peut être détourné à des fins moins louables par des cellules cancéreuses pour permettre leur dissémination (métastatisation). Dans ce travail de thèse, nous avons caractérisé une molécule d'adhésion qui soutient l'adhésion des leucocytes aux sélectines endothéliales: l'endoglycan. Nous avons observé que cette molécule d'adhésion est fréquemment exprimée par les cellules malignes de nombreuses maladies du sang comme les leucémies, les lymphomes et le myélome multiple. Nous avons également pu montrer que l'endoglycan envoie des signaux à l'intérieur des cellules malignes lorsqu'elles se lient aux sélectines endothéliales. Ces signaux pourraient jouer un rôle déterminant dans la régulation des interactions des cellules malignes avec leur microenvironnement. Elles pourraient peut-être aussi favoriser leur survie et leur prolifération.

Demographic fitness of Belminus ferroae (Hemiptera: Triatominae) on three different hosts under laboratory conditions

Triatominae are widely recognised for their role as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi. One of the main biological characteristics of this subfamily is their obligate haematophagous condition. However, previous studies on Belminus herreri and Belminus ferroae suggested that cockroaches are their principal hosts in domiciles. Due to this peculiar behaviour, the aim of this study was to analyse several demographic and reproductive parameters of B. ferroae fed on three different hosts (mice, cockroaches and Rhodnius prolixus) and relate B. ferroae fitness to these alternative hosts. The cohorts were reared under constant conditions. The egg hatching rate was similar for cohorts fed on cockroaches (69.4%) and R. prolixus (63.8%), but was much lower for the cohort fed on mice (16%). The development time from the nymph to adult stage and the average age of first reproduction (α) presented lower values in the cohort fed on cockroaches, which is consistent with the higher population growth rate associated with this host. Demographic parameters [intrinsic rate of natural increase, finite rate of population growth, net reproductive rate and damping ratio] showed statistically significant differences between the cohorts. Analysis of the life history of B. ferroae revealed a higher fitness related to the cockroach. The implications of these results for the origin of the subfamily are discussed.

Evaluating thermal treeline indicators based on air and soil temperature using an air-to-soil temperature transfer model

In recent research, both soil (root-zone) and air temperature have been used as predictors for the treeline position worldwide. In this study, we intended to (a) test the proposed temperature limitation at the treeline, and (b) investigate effects of season length for both heat sum and mean temperature variables in the Swiss Alps. As soil temperature data are available for a limited number of sites only, we developed an air-to-soil transfer model (ASTRAMO). The air-to-soil transfer model predicts daily mean root-zone temperatures (10cm below the surface) at the treeline exclusively from daily mean air temperatures. The model using calibrated air and root-zone temperature measurements at nine treeline sites in the Swiss Alps incorporates time lags to account for the damping effect between air and soil temperatures as well as the temporal autocorrelations typical for such chronological data sets. Based on the measured and modeled root-zone temperatures we analyzed. the suitability of the thermal treeline indicators seasonal mean and degree-days to describe the Alpine treeline position. The root-zone indicators were then compared to the respective indicators based on measured air temperatures, with all indicators calculated for two different indicator period lengths. For both temperature types (root-zone and air) and both indicator periods, seasonal mean temperature was the indicator with the lowest variation across all treeline sites. The resulting indicator values were 7.0 degrees C +/- 0.4 SD (short indicator period), respectively 7.1 degrees C +/- 0.5 SD (long indicator period) for root-zone temperature, and 8.0 degrees C +/- 0.6 SD (short indicator period), respectively 8.8 degrees C +/- 0.8 SD (long indicator period) for air temperature. Generally, a higher variation was found for all air based treeline indicators when compared to the root-zone temperature indicators. Despite this, we showed that treeline indicators calculated from both air and root-zone temperatures can be used to describe the Alpine treeline position.

P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 decameric repeats regulate selectin-dependent rolling under flow conditions.

P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) interacts with selectins to support leukocyte rolling along vascular wall. L- and P-selectin bind to N-terminal tyrosine sulfate residues and to core-2 O-glycans attached to Thr-57, whereas tyrosine sulfation is not required for E-selectin binding. PSGL-1 extracellular domain contains decameric repeats, which extend L- and P-selectin binding sites far above the plasma membrane. We hypothesized that decamers may play a role in regulating PSGL-1 interactions with selectins. Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing wild-type PSGL-1 or PSGL-1 molecules exhibiting deletion or substitution of decamers with the tandem repeats of platelet glycoprotein Ibalpha were compared in their ability to roll on selectins and to bind soluble L- or P-selectin. Deletion of decamers abrogated soluble L-selectin binding and cell rolling on L-selectin, whereas their substitution partially reversed these diminutions. P-selectin-dependent interactions with PSGL-1 were less affected by decamer deletion. Videomicroscopy analysis showed that decamers are required to stabilize L-selectin-dependent rolling. Importantly, adhesion assays performed on recombinant decamers demonstrated that they directly bind to E-selectin and promote slow rolling. Our results indicate that the role of decamers is to extend PSGL-1 N terminus far above the cell surface to support and stabilize leukocyte rolling on L- or P-selectin. In addition, they function as a cell adhesion receptor, which supports approximately 80% of E-selectin-dependent rolling.

U-Pb zircon dating of granitoids from the Dora-Maira massif (western Italian Alps)

Among the large number of granitic intrusions within the Dora-Maira massif, several main types can be distinguished. In this study we report field, petrographic and geochemical investigations as well as zircon typology and conventional U-Pb zircon dating of plutons representing these types. The main results are as follows: the Punta Muret augengneiss is a polymetamorphosed peraluminous granite of anatectic origin. It is 457 +/- 2 Ma old and represents one of the numerous Caledonian orthogneisses of the Alpine basement. All other dated granites are of Late Variscan age. The Cavour leucogranite is an evolved granite of probably calc-alkaline affiliation, dated at 304 +/- 2 Ma. The dioritic and granodioritic facies of the Malanaggio diorite (auct.) are typical calc-alkaline rocks, whose respective age of 290 +/- 2 and 288 +/- 2 Ma overlap within errors. The Sangone and Freidour granite types have very similar alkali-calcic characteristics; their ages are poorly constrained between 267-279 and 268-283 Ma, respectively. The new data for the Dora-Maira granites are in keeping with models of the overall evolution of the Late- to Post-Variscan magmatism in the Alpine area in terms of age distribution and progressive geochemical evolution towards alkaline melts. In a first approximation, granitic rocks across the Variscan belt seem to be increasingly younger towards the internal (southern) parts of the orogen. A Carboniferous, distensive Basin and Range situation is thought to be responsible for the magmatic activity. This tectonic context is comparable to the back-are opening of an active continental margin. The observed southward migration of the magmatism could be linked to the roll-back of the subducting Paleotethyan oceanic plate along the Variscan cordillera.
