Pb-Zn-Ag vein and listwaenite types of mineralization in Crnac deposit, Western Vardar zone, were deposited within several stages: (i) the pre-ore stage comprises pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, quartz, kaolinite and is followed by magnetite-pyrite; (ii) the syn-ore stage is composed of galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite and stefanite; and (iii) the post-ore stage is composed of carbonates, pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor galena. The vein type mineralization is hosted by Jurassic amphibolites and veins terminate within overlying serpentinites. Mineralized listwaenites are developed along the serpentinite-amphibolite interface. The reserves are estimated to 1.7 Mt of ore containing in average 7.6% lead, 2.9% zinc, and 102 g/t silver. Sulfides from the pre- and syn-mineralization assemblage of the vein- and listwaenite-types of mineralization from the Crnac Pb-Zn-Ag deposit have been analyzed using microprobe, crush-leachates and sulfur isotopes. The pre-ore assemblage precipitated under high sulfur fugacities (f(S(2)) = 10(-8)-10(-6) bar) from temperatures ranging between 350 degrees C and 380 degrees C. Most likely water-rock reactions, boiling and/or increase of pH caused an increase of delta(34)S of pyrite toward upper levels within the deposit. The decomposition of pre-ore pyrrhotite to a pyrite-magnetite mixture occurred at a fugacity of sulfur from f(S(2)) = 8.7 x 10(-10) to 9.6 x 10(-9) bar and fugacity of oxygen from f(O(2)) = 2.4 x 10(-30) to 3.1 x 10(-28) bars, indicating a contribution of an oxidizing fluid, i.e. meteoric water during pre-ore stages of hydrothermal activity. The crystallization temperatures obtained by the sphalerite-galena isotope geothermometer range from 230 to 310 degrees C. The delta(34)S values of pre- and syn-ore sulfides (pyrite, galena, sphalerite, delta(34)S = 0.3-5.9 parts per thousand) point to magmatic sulfur. Values of delta(34)S of galena and sphalerite are decreasing upwards due to precipitation of early formed sulfide minerals. Post-ore assemblage precipitated at temperature below 190 degrees C. Based on data presented above, we assume two fluid sources: (i) a magmatic source, supported by sulfur isotopic compositions within pre- and syn-ore minerals and a high mol% of fluorine found within pre- and syn-ore leachates, and (ii) a meteoric source, deduced by coincident pyrite-magnetite intergrowth, sulfur isotopic trends within syn-ore minerals and decrease of crystallization temperatures from the pre-ore stage (380-350 degrees C), towards the syn-ore (310-215 degrees C) and post-ore stages (<190 degrees C). Post-ore fluids are Na-Ca-Mg-K-Li chlorine rich and were modified via water-rock reactions. Simple mineral assemblage and sphalerite composition range from 1.5 to 10.1 mol% of FeS catalog Crnac to a group of intermediate sulfidation epithermal deposit. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Anorectal anomalies occurring with other anomalies or as part of syndromes were analyzed to determine how their epidemiological characteristics differed from those of isolated anal anomalies. Almost 15% of cases were chromosomal, monogenic or teratogenic syndromes, whereas the rest were of unknown cause including sequences (9.3%), VACTERL associations (15.4%) and multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) (60.2%). Almost half of babies with MCA had one or two VACTERL anomalies with distribution frequencies that did not differ significantly from those in babies with the full VACTERL association. There were considerable differences in the frequency of the VACTERL association among babies with different types of anorectal anomaly. Babies with anal anomalies occurring with sequences, VACTERL or MCA showed the same sex differences as babies with isolated anal anomalies, namely male predominance in anal atresia without fistula or cloaca, no sex difference in anal atresia with fistula, and female predominance in ectopic anus and congenital anal fistula. These anomalies, however, were associated with significantly lower mean gestational lengths and birth weights, and higher frequencies of fetal death and pregnancy termination than babies with isolated anal anomalies. Twins were more frequent in sequences, VACTERL and MCA than in isolated anomalies, monogenic syndromes or chromosome anomalies. Five cases were conjoined twins, representing 15% of all cases of twin pregnancies with an anal anomaly. Indeterminate sex was more frequent in babies with anal atresias without fistula than in those with fistula. Anal anomalies are defects of blastogenesis attributable to disorders in expression of pattern determining genes. The differential sex involvement in different types of anal anomaly may be manifestations of expression of the HY/SRY genes during blastogenesis or of X-linkage.

Objectives: To investigate the clinical correlates of frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA). Methods: we prospectively assessed all EEG studies recorded in our center over 3 months for the presence of frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA). The FIRDA group was compared with a randomly selected control group from among EEGs recorded during the same period. Comparisons among FIRDA and non-FIRDA groups were performed using uni- and multi-variate analyses. Results: We found 36 patients with FIRDA among 559 EEG recordings (6%); the control group consisted of 80 subjects. While epilepsy was more frequent in the control group, structural brain lesions and encephalopathy were independently associated with the occurrence of FIRDA, but we could not identify any specific etiology. Asymmetric FIRDA was associated with an underlying brain lesion. Occasionally, FIRDA was recorded in otherwise healthy subjects during hyperventilation. Conclusion: FIRDA appears more common than previously reported, and is associated with a wide range of lesions and encephalopathic conditions. Significance: FIRDA occurrence should prompt investigations for toxic-metabolic disturbances and for structural lesions (particularly if asymmetric), but does not suggest an epileptic predilection.

The cardiovascular system is under the control of the circadian clock, and disturbed circadian rhythms can induce cardiovascular pathologies. This cyclic regulation is probably brought about by the circadian expression of genes encoding enzymes and regulators involved in cardiovascular functions. We have previously shown that the rhythmic transcription of output genes is, in part, regulated by the clock-controlled PAR bZip transcription factors DBP (albumin D-element Binding Protein), HLF (Hepatic Leukemia Factor), and TEF (Thyrotroph Embryonic Factor). The simultaneous deletion of all three PAR bZip transcription factors leads to increased morbidity and shortened life span. Here, we demonstrate that Dbp/Tef/Hlf triple knockout mice develop cardiac hypertrophy and left ventricular dysfunction associated with a low blood pressure. These dysfunctions are exacerbated by an abnormal response to this low blood pressure characterized by low aldosterone levels. The phenotype of PAR bZip knockout mice highlights the importance of circadian regulators in the modulation of cardiovascular functions.

As a continuation of "Postmortem Chemistry Update Part I," Part II deals with molecules linked to liver and cardiac functions, alcohol intake and alcohol misuse, myocardial ischemia, inflammation, sepsis, anaphylaxis, and hormonal disturbances. A very important array of new material concerning these situations had appeared in the forensic literature over the last two decades. Some molecules, such as procalcitonin and C-reactive protein, are currently researched in cases of suspected sepsis and inflammation, whereas many other analytes are not integrated into routine casework. As in part I, a literature review concerning a large panel of molecules of forensic interest is presented, as well as the results of our own observations, where possible.

Assessment of image quality for digital x-ray mammography systems used in European screening programs relies mainly on contrast-detail CDMAM phantom scoring and requires the acquisition and analysis of many images in order to reduce variability in threshold detectability. Part II of this study proposes an alternative method based on the detectability index (d') calculated for a non-prewhitened model observer with an eye filter (NPWE). The detectability index was calculated from the normalized noise power spectrum and image contrast, both measured from an image of a 5 cm poly(methyl methacrylate) phantom containing a 0.2 mm thick aluminium square, and the pre-sampling modulation transfer function. This was performed as a function of air kerma at the detector for 11 different digital mammography systems. These calculated d' values were compared against threshold gold thickness (T) results measured with the CDMAM test object and against derived theoretical relationships. A simple relationship was found between T and d', as a function of detector air kerma; a linear relationship was found between d' and contrast-to-noise ratio. The values of threshold thickness used to specify acceptable performance in the European Guidelines for 0.10 and 0.25 mm diameter discs were equivalent to threshold calculated detectability indices of 1.05 and 6.30, respectively. The NPWE method is a validated alternative to CDMAM scoring for use in the image quality specification, quality control and optimization of digital x-ray systems for screening mammography.

Well developed experimental procedures currently exist for retrieving and analyzing particle evidence from hands of individuals suspected of being associated with the discharge of a firearm. Although analytical approaches (e.g. automated Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDS) microanalysis) allow the determination of the presence of elements typically found in gunshot residue (GSR) particles, such analyses provide no information about a given particle's actual source. Possible origins for which scientists may need to account for are a primary exposure to the discharge of a firearm or a secondary transfer due to a contaminated environment. In order to approach such sources of uncertainty in the context of evidential assessment, this paper studies the construction and practical implementation of graphical probability models (i.e. Bayesian networks). These can assist forensic scientists in making the issue tractable within a probabilistic perspective. The proposed models focus on likelihood ratio calculations at various levels of detail as well as case pre-assessment.

This report addresses the field testing and analysis of those results to establish the behavior of the original Clive Road Bridge that carried highway traffic over Interstate 80 (I-80) in the northwest region of Des Moines, Iowa. The bridge was load tested in 1959, shortly after its construction and in 1993, just prior to its demolition. This report presents some of the results from both field tests, finite element predictions of the behavior of aluminum bridge girders, and load distribution studies.

Due to constant progress in oncology, survival rates of patients (children and adults) with cancer are increasing. Consequently, the reproductive future of young cancer patients needs to be addressed carefully. Fertility preservation techniques are available and issues such as the time available for fertility treatments, patients' age, presence of a partner and patients' personal wishes have to be considered. In Switzerland, a first therapeutic network (Réseau Romand de Cancer et Fertilité), was created in the French speaking part of Switzerland in 2006. Since 2010, a global Swiss network (FertiSave) has been created. The goal of these networks is to maximise the safety and efficacy of fertility preservation options offered to cancer patients without compromising their oncological prognosis. Patients' needs have to be identified, the therapeutic options evaluated rapidly and the optimal treatment promptly implemented in these urgent situations. This article reviews the fertility preservation options currently available and makes recommendations for different specific cancer situations, consistent with the latest scientific evidence and in general agreement with international recommendations.

With the aim of understanding the mechanisms that control the metamorphic transition from the CH4- to the H2O-(CO2)-dominated fluid zone in the Helvetic domain of the Central Alps of Switzerland, fluid inclusions in quartz, illite ``crystallinity'' index, vitrinite reflectance, and the stable isotope compositions of vein and whole rock minerals and fluids trapped in quartz were investigated along four cross-sections. Increasing temperature during prograde metamorphism led to the formation of dry gas by hydrocarbon cracking in the CH4-zone. Fluid immiscibility in the H2O-CH4-(CO2)-NaCl system resulted in cogenetic, CH4- and H2O-dominated fluid inclusions. In the CH4-zone, fluids were trapped at temperatures <= 270 +/- 5 degrees C. The end of the CH4-zone is markedby a sudden increase of CO2 content in the gas phase of fluid inclusions. At temperatures > 270 +/- 5 degrees C, in the H2O-zone, the total amount of volatiles within the fluid decreased below 1 mol% with no immiscibility. This resulted m total homogenization temperatures of H2O-(CO2-CH4)-NaCl inclusions below 180 degrees C. Hydrogen isotope compositions of methane in fluid inclusion have delta D values of less than -100 parts per thousand in the CH4-zone, typical for an origin through cracking of higher hydrocarbons, but where the methane has not equilibrated with the pore water. delta D values of fluid inclusion water are around -40 parts per thousand., in isotopic equilibrium with phyllosilicates of the whole rocks. Within the CH4 to H2O(CO2) transition zone, delta D(H2O) values in fluid inclusions decrease to -130 parts per thousand interpreted to reflect the contribution of deuterium depleted water from methane oxidation. In the H2O-zone, delta D(H2O) values increase again towards an average of -30 parts per thousand which is again consistent with isotopic equilibrium with host-rock phyllosilicates. delta C-13 values of methane in fluid inclusions from the CH4-zone are around -27 parts per thousand in isotopic equilibrium with calcite in veins and whole rocks. The delta C-13(CH4) values decrease to less than -35 parts per thousand at the transition to the H2O-zone and are no longer in equilibrium with the carbonates in the whole rocks. delta C-13 values of CO, are variable but too low to be in equilibrium with the wall rock fluids, compatible with a contribution of CO2 from closed system oxidation of methane. Differences in isotopic composition between host-rock and Alpine fissure carbonate are generally small, suggesting that the amount of CO2 produced by oxidation of methane was small compared to the C-budget in the rocks and local pore fluids were buffered by the wall rocks during precipitation of calcite within the fissures. Background: In 2004, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) was offered by physicians in one third of Swiss hospitals. Since then, CAM health policy has considerably changed. This study aims at describing the present supply and use of CAM in hospitals of the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and qualitatively explores the characteristics of this supply. Methods: Between June 2011 and March 2012, a short questionnaire was sent to the medical directors of hospitals (N=46), asking them whether a CAM was offered, where and by whom. Then, a semi-directive interview was conducted with 10 CAM therapists. Results: Among 37 responses (return rate 80%), 19 medical directors indicated that their hospital offered at least one CAM and 18 reported that they did not. Acupuncture was the most frequently proposed CAM, followed by manual therapies, osteopathy and aromatherapy. The disciplines that offered CAM most frequently were rehabilitation, gynaecology- obstetrics, palliative care, psychiatry and anaesthesiology. In eight out of ten interviews, it appeared that the procedures for introducing a CAM in the hospital were not tightly supervised by the hospital but were mainly based on the goodwill of the therapists, rather than clinical/scientific evidence. Conclusion: Hospitals offering CAM in the French-speaking part of Switzerland seems to have risen since 2004. The selection of CAM to be offered in a hospital should be based on the same procedure of evaluation and validation as conventional care, and if their safety and efficiency is evidence-based, they should receive the same structural resources.
