A Study of the Epidemiology of AIDS in Ireland and an Evaluation of an AIDS Education Programme in Second-level Schools

Second-level school students have been identified by the Minister for health as a priority group for education on AIDS. An education programme was accordingly initiated in 1988 in Community Care Area 1 in South county Dublin. This report evaluates this education intervention by means of pre- and post- intervention questionnaires. The questionnaire examined knowledge and attitudes of students relevant to AIDS. The results showed that the level of knowledge of students living in this area was high prior to intervention. The education programme succeeded in improving some aspects of knowledge and also influenced some attitudes of the students. A study of the epidemiology of Aids in Ireland reveals that the epidemic is at a relatively early stage with a consequent rapid doubling time of 9-10 months. In comparison with most developed countries Ireland has a high proportion of AIDS cases occurring among intravenous drug abusers and directly related to this a high number of HIV infected children. Examination of the literature reveals that behaviour change has occurred most noticeably among the homosexual/bisexual risk group. There is some evidence that the comprehensive programmes can achieve change in the behaviour of intravenous drug abusers. There are very few reports linking behaviour change among adolescents and young adults to education programmes. Much of the available literature relates to changes in knowledge and attitudes. International recommendations on the nature of the ideal health education intervention on AIDS are reviewed. The importance of a comprehensive health education programme which incorporates AIDS education and which commences early in youth is noted. The role of the community physician in relation to education programmes and other aspects of monitoring and management of the AIDS epidemic is discussed.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme annual report 2010.

January 2010 saw the former Crisis Pregnancy Agencyâ?Ts integration into the Health Service Executive to become the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme. For most of 2010, the Programme was located in Children and Family Social Services Care Group in the Integrated Services Directorate and reported to Assistant National Director for Children and Family Social Services. The Programme commenced the process of forging links and relationships within the wider HSE and with services which support and add value to the work of the Programme. The Programme also made efforts to identify areas where it could share its expertise in the areas of crisis pregnancy and sexual health. In the latter part of 2010, the Programme was moved to Public Health with the aim of improving the alignment of the Programme to achieve better integration and create more opportunity to synchronise approaches with other related parts of the health service and to work more effectively at long term integration and planning 2012 - 2016.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

Summer School Programme

The Summer School aims to enable and foster a climate of inquiry for critical thinking, quantitative analysis and explore existing relevant data sources. We aim to develop the concepts and tools associated with quantitative research related to child health and wellbeing. Building on participants’ existing knowledge of research, policy and practice, we will focus on the quantitative skills necessary to mine and critique relevant national databases, conduct basic quantitative research and apply these skills to work. The SPSS workshops will provide  participants with a basic understanding of a statistical programme for analysing empirical data and the open clinics will allow participants to discuss their own research issues with experts.

Archiving and Accessing Qualitative Data Programme

There is a growing body of qualitative research data being made available in data archives in both Ireland and the UK. Examples of Irish qualitative data currently available for further analysis include Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) and Life Histories and Social Change in 20th Century Ireland. The Timescapes Research Programme, at the University of Leeds, hosts a wide variety of economic and social research data relevant to child and family researchers; data which is available to researchers in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Access to this data provides researchers with greater opportunities to explore the issues that affect children, their families and their  communities and which may ultimately contribute to informing children's policy. In this the second master class of the Children's Research Network for Ireland and Northern Ireland, participants will learn about the various qualitativ edatasets that are publicly-available for research purposes in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Ethics masterclass programme

The Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) recently launched ‘Guidance for developing ethical research projects involving children’. The Guidance considers ethical principles and concepts in research with children and presents a checklist for the design and conduct of research.  In this the third master class of the Children's Research Network for Ireland and Northern Ireland, participants will have an opportunity to respond to the Guidance and to discuss ethical issues in their work. The workshop will also provide participants with the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the community and voluntary sector in applying and monitoring ethical standards in their work in the absence of formal/institutional ethics committees

Food Focus

he Food Focus Community Food Initiative promotes healthy eating through a variety of co-ordinated, strategic activities that offer people a way to engage in a positive approach to food. It is creating one community, one message about healthy eating and ensure the ability to achieve a healthy diet through building a variety of sustainable, engaging food activities. Food Focus is a set of community based structures dedicated to addressing the risk and instances of food poverty in the Knocknaheeny area and intends to act as a model for similar work across other RAPID/Health Area Zone areas on the North side of Cork. It offers participants the chance to grow their own food, sign up to the food charter, learn about budgeting and planning or volunteer. The Community Food Charter was developed by local people and other stakeholders supported by the Community Dietician and will reflect the kind of food experiences they want for themselves, their families, within projects and public outlets. Healthy Eating Education Programme

This Programme provides healthy nutritious food for residents and ex-residents of the East Belfast Missions homeless shelter. It also provides health and diet sessions and cookery demonstrations on how to plan and prepare healthy food on a low budget. Information and advice sessions will also be provided for local residents, senior citizens and users of their family and community programmes giving advice and support on how to prepare and cook healthy meals on a low income. They are also linked in with a Going Green local community gardening project. Journeyman Programme Kitchen and Garden

A new community kitchen and community garden are nearing the end of development. The area around the kitchen is designated for the community garden and is being developed this year. Running in conjunction with a school leavers programme, the garden will be an inclusive area for young people with disabilities. The community kitchen is expected to be used by the refugee centre and also local schools. Pacesetters Programme

Pacesetters is a partnership between local communities who experience health inequalities, the NHS and the Department of Health (DH). The Equality and Human Rights Group (EHRG) of DH is working with six strategic health authorities (SHAs) on the programme.

Améliorations et optimisation globale de la méthode des analogues pour la prévision statistique des précipitations. Développement d'un outil de prévision et application opérationnelle au bassin du Rhône à l'amont du Léman.

Le bassin du Rhône à l'amont du Léman peut être sujet à de fortes précipitations en mesure de provoquer des crues significatives. L'objectif du projet MINERVE dans lequel s'inscrit le présent travail consiste à fournir des outils pour la prévision et la gestion des crues par des actions préventives sur les aménagements hydroélectriques à accumulation. Pour satisfaire ce dernier, il est nécessaire de prévoir au mieux les cumuls de précipitations pour les jours suivants. Ceci est actuellement effectué par le modèle numérique de prévision de MétéoSuisse ; mais, en raison des grandes incertitudes liées à la quantification des événements extrêmes, il a été décidé qu'une approche parallèle de nature statistique pourrait compléter l'information disponible. Ainsi, nous avons adapté la méthode des analogues, qui est une technique de prévision statistique des précipitations, au contexte alpin du bassin d'étude. Pour ce faire, plusieurs paramétrisations de la méthode ont été documentées et calibrées. Afin de prendre en main la méthode, nous avons effectué de multiples analyses paramétriques sur les variables synoptiques, mais également sur la constitution de groupements pluviométriques. Une partie conséquente de cette étude a été consacrée à la programmation d'un logiciel de prévision automatique par la méthode des analogues, ainsi qu'à un outil de visualisation des résultats sous forme de cartes et graphiques. Ce logiciel, nommé Atmoswing, permet d'implémenter un grand nombre de méthodes différentes de prévision par analogie. L'outil est opérationnel depuis mi-2011 et nous a permis de confirmer l'intérêt de la prévision par analogie. La méthode étant ici appliquée à un nouveau contexte, un grand nombre de variables synoptiques ont été évaluées. Nous avons alors confirmé l'intérêt des deux niveaux d'analogie sur la circulation atmosphérique et sur le flux d'humidité, tout en apportant des améliorations à celles-ci. Il en résulte des paramétrisations présentant des scores de performance supérieurs aux méthodes de référence considérées. Nous avons également évalué d'autres améliorations, comme l'introduction d'une fenêtre temporelle glissante afin de rechercher de meilleures analogies synoptiques à d'autres heures de la journée, ce qui s'est avéré intéressant, tout comme une prévision infrajournalière à pas de temps de 6 h. Finalement, nous avons introduit une technique d'optimisation globale, les algorithmes génétiques, capable de calibrer la méthode des analogues en considérant tous les paramètres des différents niveaux d'analogie de manière conjointe. Avec cette technique, nous pouvons nous approcher objectivement d'une paramétrisation optimale. Le choix des niveaux atmosphériques et des fenêtres temporelles et spatiales étant automatisé, cette technique peut engendrer un gain de temps, même si elle est relativement exigeante en calculs. Nous avons ainsi pu améliorer la méthode des analogues, et y ajouter de nouveaux degrés de liberté, notamment des fenêtres spatiales et des pondérations différenciées selon les niveaux atmosphériques retenus.
