Effect of temperature on the interaction between the nonionic surfactant C(12)E(5) and poly(ethylene oxide) investigated by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence methods

The interaction between the nonionic surfactant C(12)E(5) and a high molar mass (M = 5.94 x 10(5)) poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) in aqueous solution has been examined as a function of temperature by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence methods over a broad concentration range. Clusters of small surfactant micelles form within the PEO coil, leading to its extension. The hydrodynamic radius of the complex increases strongly with temperature as well as with the concentrations of surfactant and polymer. At high concentrations of the surfactant, the coil/micellar cluster complex coexists with free C(12)E(5) micelles in the solution. Fluorescence quenching measurements show a moderate micellar growth from 155 to 203 monomers in PEO-free solutions of C(12)E(5) over a wide concentration range (0.02-2.5%) at 8 degrees C. Below 0.25% C(12)E(5), the average aggregation number (N) of the micelles is smaller in the presence of PEO than in its absence. However, N increases with increasing surfactant concentration up to a plateau value of about 270 at about 1.2% (ca. 30 mM) C(12)E(5). At high surfactant concentrations, N is larger in the presence of polymer than in its absence, a finding which is connected to a significant lowering of the clouding temperature due to the PEO at these compositions. Similar results of increasing aggregation number followed by a plateau were also found at a fixed concentration of surfactant (2.5%) and varied PEO.

NONLINEAR SCALAR COUPLING MODELS AND PROTON-NUCLEUS SCATTERING OBSERVABLES

The effects of nonlinear scalar field couplings on elastic proton-nucleus scattering observables are investigated using a relativistic impulse approximation. Nonlinear couplings affect in a nontrivial way the effective nucleon mass and the nuclear scalar and vector densities. Modifications on the densities might have observable consequences on scattering observables. Our investigation indicates that the description of the observables for the reactions p-O-16 and p-Ca-40 at 200 MeV are not greatly modified with the use of nonlinear models in comparison with the description using linear models.

Effects of some mineral deficiencies on the development of the soybean plant, Glycine max (L.) Merril cv Santa Rosa

The present work studies Ca, B and Zn omission on the development of soybean plants (Glycine max (L.) Merrill cv Santa Rosa). The experiment was carried out as hydroponic culture, viith complete Hoagland & Arnon nutrient solution nr. 2 (C), lacking calcium (-Ca), lacking boron (-B) or lacking zinc (-Zn), a total of 4 treatments. Seven samplings were made to determine: total dry matter (g), root dry matter (g), stem dry matter (g) and leaf dry matter (g). Results showed that Ca and B omissions decreased dry weight. Lack of Zn did not affect dry weight.

Microstructural and ferroelectric properties of PbZr1-xTi(x)O(3) thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method

The polymeric precursor method was employed in the preparation of PZT thin films on Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the polycrystalline nature of the PZT (53:47) thin films, which had a granular structure and a grain size of approximately 70 nm. A 350-nm thick film was obtained by running three cycles of the dip-coating/heating process. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (= 2.0 nm). The PZT (53:47) thin films annealed at 700 degreesC showed a well-saturated hysteresis loop. The C-V curves of perovskite thin film displayed normal ferroelectric behavior, while the remanent polarization (2P(r)) and coercive field (E-e) of the film deposited and measured at room temperature were 40 muC/cm(2) and 110 kV/cm, respectively. Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide vesicles prepared by the surfactant removal method

Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) is a double chain vesicle-forming cationic surfactant, whereas octa-ethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (C12E8) is a single chain micelle-forming nonionic surfactant. At room temperature (ca. 22 degrees C) C12E8 molecules self-assemble in water as micelles while DODAB is insoluble. A mixture of DODAB and C12E8, however, can be soluble in water at room temperature depending on the relative amount of the compounds. We report the formation of small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) by dialyzing at room temperature a mixture of 1.0 mM DODAB with 10 mM C12E8 in water. Extended bilayers are formed as well in equilibrium with vesicles. Such structures are viewed by a cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) image. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Search for new physics in events with same-sign dileptons and b-tagged jets in pp collisions at √ s = 7TeV

A search for new physics is performed using isolated same-sign dileptons with at least two b-quark jets in the final state. Results are based on a 4.98 fb -1 sample of protonproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV collected by the CMS detector. No excess above the standard model background is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the number of events from non-standard-model sources. These limits are used to set constraints on a number of new physics models. Information on acceptance and efficiencies are also provided so that the results can be used to confront additional models in an approximate way. © 2012 SISSA.
