Five new open-framework compounds of gallium have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods and their structures determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The compounds, C8N4H26]Ga6F4(PO4)(6)], I, C5N3H11]Ga3F2(PO4)(3)]center dot H2O, II, C6N3H19]Ga-4(C2O4)(PO4)(4)(H2PO4)]center dot 2H(2)O, III, Ga2F3(HPO4)(PO4)]center dot 2H(3)O, IV, and C3N2H5](2)Ga-4(H2O)(3)(HPO3)(7)], V, possess three-dimensional structures. All the compounds are formed by the connectivity between the Ga polyhedra and phosphite/phosphate units. The observation of SBU-6 (I and II) and spiro-5 (IV) secondary building units (SBUs) are noteworthy. The flexibility of the formation of gallium phosphate frameworks has been established by the isolation of two related structures (I and II) from the same SBU units but different organic amines. Some of the present structures have close resemblance to the gallium phosphate phases known earlier. The compounds have been characterized by CHN analysis, powder XRD, IR, and TGA. This paper reports the TR3 spectral studies on perfluorinated organic systems with the objective to understand the influence of perfluorination on the excited states. We have recorded the TR3 spectra and Raman excitation profiles of the triplet excited states of decafluorobenzophenone and fluoranil. It is found that the influence of perfluorination is more pronounced in the triplet excited state than the ground state and thus leads to enhanced reactivity for perfluorinated compounds through larger structural distortions.

We have synthesized four different types of dimesogenic compounds involving the cholesteryl moiety as one of the mesogenic constituents, and have investigated their liquid crystalline properties. The molecular structures of these dimesogens have been confirmed by spectral analyses; they exhibit a rich polymorphism, as revealed by optical microscopic and differential scanning calorimetric observations. The studies show that the mesomorphic behaviour is sensitive to the nature of the terminal alkyl chains, and to the structure of the 'second mesogen' that is attached to the cholesteryl unit through a polymethylene spacer.

Layered organic inorganic hybrids based on perovskite-derived alkylammonium lead halides have been demonstrated as important new materials in the construction of molecular electronic devices. Typical of this class of materials are the single-perovskite slab lead iodides of the general formula (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4. While for small n, these compounds are amenable to single-crystal structure determination, the increasing degree of disorder in the long chain (n = 12,14...) compounds makes such an analysis difficult. In this study, we use powder X-ray diffraction, and vibrational and C-13 NMR spectroscopies to establish the conformation, orientation and organization of hydrocarbon chains in the series of layered alkylammonium lead iodides (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4 (n = 12,16,18). We find that the alkyl chains adopt a tilted bilayer arrangement, while the structure of the inorganic layer remains invariant with respect to the value of n. Conformation-sensitive methylene stretching modes in the infrared and Raman spectra, as well as the C-13 NMR spectra indicate that bonds in the methylene chain are in trans configuration. The skeletal modes of the alkyl chain in the Raman spectra establish that there is a high degree of all-trans conformational registry for the values of n studied here. From the orientation dependence of the infrared spectra of crystals of (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4 ( n = 12,16), we find that the molecular axis of the all-trans alkyl chains are tilted away from the interlayer normal by an angle of 55degrees. This value of this tilt angle is consistent with the dependence of the c lattice expansion as a function of n, as determined from powder X-ray diffraction.

In order to investigate the supramolecular hydrogen-bonded networks and other structural features exhibited by compounds containing an organic cation and an inorganic anion, sulfates of the organic diamines, ethylenediamine (I), 1,3-diaminopropane (II), piperazine (III), and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) (IV) have been prepared investigated by X-ray crystallography. While II, III, and IV crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group, Pbca, P2(1)/n, Pbcn, respectively, I crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group, P4(1) exhibiting chirality and weak NLO properties. I-IV exhibit different types of supramolecular H-bonded networks involving the organic cation and the SO42- anion. The nature and strength of the H-bonding network vary from one compound to another, with the strongest network found in piperazinium sulfate, III, and the weakest in II. While in III, water molecules form part of the H-bonded network, they are present as guest molecules in the channels of IV. Thermal stability of the compounds as well as the infrared spectra reflect the stabilities of these H-bonded solids. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Structures of monohydrogen squarates of methylamine, ethylenediamine, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,5-diaminopentane, N,N'-diemethylpiperazine and N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidine have been studied in detail. The supramolecular hydrogen-bonded molecular networks are formed by the monoanion of squaric acid by itself or in association with the parent acid. Three types of hydrogen-bonded motifs are observed in these compounds, namely a liner chain, a cyclic dimer and a cyclic tetramer. These hydrogen-bonded motifs formed by the squaric acid species interact with the amine through N-H...O hydrogen-bonding and give rise to predominantly layered structures, while some of them also exhibit three-dimensional structures. Two of the monohydrogen squarate structures also exhibit pi-pi interactions between two squarate rings. The various hydrogen-bonding parameters in the amine squarates are discussed at length. Competition among weak intermolecular interactions can lead to polymorphism, the appearance of various crystalline forms of a substance with comparable cohesive energies. The crystal structures of 2-fluorophenylacetylene (2FPA) and 3-fluorophenylacetylene (3FPA), both of which are liquids at ambient conditions, have been determined by in situ cryocrystallization. Both compounds exhibit dimorphs, with one of the forms observed in common, P2(1), Z = 2 and the other form being Pna2(1), Z = 4 for 2FPA and P2(1)/c, Z = 12 for 3FPA. Variations in the crystal structures of the dimorphs of each of these compounds arise from subtle differences in the way in which weak intermolecular interactions such as C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot F are manifested. The interactions involving ``organic'' fluorine, are entirely different from those in the known structure of 4-fluorophenylacetylene (4FPA), space group P2(1)/c, Z = 4. The commonalities and differences in these polymorphs of 2FPA and 3FPA have been analyzed in terms of supramolecular synthons and extended long-range synthon aufbau module (LSAM) patterns. These structures are compared with the three polymorphs of phenylacetylene, in terms of the T-shaped C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction, a feature common to all these structures.

A new class of fluorinated gelators derived from bile acids is reported. Perfluoroalkyl chains were attached to the bile acids through two different ester linkages and were synthesized following simple transformations. The gelation property of these derivatives is a function of the bile acid moiety, the spacer and the fluoroalkyl chain length. By varying these parameters, gels were obtained in aromatic hydrocarbons, DMSO and DMSO/DMF-H(2)O mixtures of different proportions. Several derivatives of deoxycholic and lithocholic acids were found to be efficient organogelators, while the reported bile-acid based organogelators are mostly derived from the cholic acid moiety. The efficient gelators among these compounds formed gels well below 1.0% (w/v) and hence they can be termed as supergelators. The mechanical properties of these gels could be modulated by changing either the bile acid moiety or by varying the length of the fluoroalkyl segment. The presence of CO(2)-philic perfluoroalkyl groups is also expected to enhance their solubility in supercritical CO(2) and hence these compounds are promising candidates for making aerogels.

Catalytic amount of vanadium reagent with tert-butylhydroperoxide as the oxidant was found to be an excellent oxidizing agent in aqueous medium. Vanadium pentoxide with aq tert-butylhydroperoxide readily oxidizes primary benzylic azides to the corresponding acids and secondary benzylic azides to the corresponding ketones in excellent yields. Further, vanadium pentoxide and aq tert-butylhydroperoxide combination turned out to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols. Using vanadium pentoxide and aq tert-butylhydroperoxide primary alcohols were oxidized to the corresponding acids, whereas secondary alcohols underwent a smooth transformation to furnish corresponding ketones in excellent yields. All the oxidations are performed in water. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two copper-containing compounds [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(2){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(CH(3)COO)] , I, and [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, II, were prepared using sulphoisophthalic and nitroisophthalic acids. The removal of the coordinated water molecules in the compounds was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation studies, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The efficacy of SCSC transformation studies were established by the observation of dimensionality cross-over from a two-dimensional (I) to a three-dimensional structure, Cu(6)(mu(3)-OH)(4){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(2)(CH(3)COO)(2), Ia, during the removal of the coordinated water molecules. Compound H exhibited a structural reorganization forming Cu(5)(mu(2)-OH)(2){(NO(2))C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2))(4)], Ha, possessing trimeric (Cu(3)O(12)) and dimeric (Cu(2)O(8)) copper clusters. The PXRD studies indicate that the three-dimensional structure (Ia) is transient and unstable, reverting back to the more stable two-dimensional structure (I) on cooling to room temperature. Compound Ha appears to be more stable at room temperature. The rehydration/dehydration studies using a modified TGA setup suggest complete rehydration of the water molecules, indicating that the water molecules in both compounds are labile. A possible model for the observed changes in the structures has been proposed. Magnetic studies indicate changes in the exchanges between the copper centers in Ha, whereas no such behavior was observed in Ia.
