Polynomial constraint solving plays a prominent role in several areas of hardware and software analysis and verification, e.g., termination proving, program invariant generation and hybrid system verification, to name a few. In this paper we propose a new method for solving non-linear constraints based on encoding the problem into an SMT problem considering only linear arithmetic. Unlike other existing methods, our method focuses on proving satisfiability of the constraints rather than on proving unsatisfiability, which is more relevant in several applications as we illustrate with several examples. Nevertheless, we also present new techniques based on the analysis of unsatisfiable cores that allow one to efficiently prove unsatisfiability too for a broad class of problems. The power of our approach is demonstrated by means of extensive experiments comparing our prototype with state-of-the-art tools on benchmarks taken both from the academic and the industrial world.

Abstract One of the most important issues in molecular biology is to understand regulatory mechanisms that control gene expression. Gene expression is often regulated by proteins, called transcription factors which bind to short (5 to 20 base pairs),degenerate segments of DNA. Experimental efforts towards understanding the sequence specificity of transcription factors is laborious and expensive, but can be substantially accelerated with the use of computational predictions. This thesis describes the use of algorithms and resources for transcriptionfactor binding site analysis in addressing quantitative modelling, where probabilitic models are built to represent binding properties of a transcription factor and can be used to find new functional binding sites in genomes. Initially, an open-access database(HTPSELEX) was created, holding high quality binding sequences for two eukaryotic families of transcription factors namely CTF/NF1 and LEFT/TCF. The binding sequences were elucidated using a recently described experimental procedure called HTP-SELEX, that allows generation of large number (> 1000) of binding sites using mass sequencing technology. For each HTP-SELEX experiments we also provide accurate primary experimental information about the protein material used, details of the wet lab protocol, an archive of sequencing trace files, and assembled clone sequences of binding sequences. The database also offers reasonably large SELEX libraries obtained with conventional low-throughput protocols.The database is available at http://wwwisrec.isb-sib.ch/htpselex/ and and ftp://ftp.isrec.isb-sib.ch/pub/databases/htpselex. The Expectation-Maximisation(EM) algorithm is one the frequently used methods to estimate probabilistic models to represent the sequence specificity of transcription factors. We present computer simulations in order to estimate the precision of EM estimated models as a function of data set parameters(like length of initial sequences, number of initial sequences, percentage of nonbinding sequences). We observed a remarkable robustness of the EM algorithm with regard to length of training sequences and the degree of contamination. The HTPSELEX database and the benchmarked results of the EM algorithm formed part of the foundation for the subsequent project, where a statistical framework called hidden Markov model has been developed to represent sequence specificity of the transcription factors CTF/NF1 and LEF1/TCF using the HTP-SELEX experiment data. The hidden Markov model framework is capable of both predicting and classifying CTF/NF1 and LEF1/TCF binding sites. A covariance analysis of the binding sites revealed non-independent base preferences at different nucleotide positions, providing insight into the binding mechanism. We next tested the LEF1/TCF model by computing binding scores for a set of LEF1/TCF binding sequences for which relative affinities were determined experimentally using non-linear regression. The predicted and experimentally determined binding affinities were in good correlation.

Teollisuuden tuotannon eri prosessien optimointi on hyvin ajankohtainen aihe. Monet ohjausjärjestelmät ovat ajalta, jolloin tietokoneiden laskentateho oli hyvin vaatimaton nykyisiin verrattuna. Työssä esitetään tuotantoprosessi, joka sisältää teräksen leikkaussuunnitelman muodostamisongelman. Valuprosessi on yksi teräksen valmistuksen välivaiheita. Siinä sopivaan laatuun saatettu sula teräs valetaan linjastoon, jossa se jähmettyy ja leikataan aihioiksi. Myöhemmissä vaiheissa teräsaihioista muokataan pienempiä kokonaisuuksia, tehtaan lopputuotteita. Jatkuvavaletut aihiot voidaan leikata tilauskannasta riippuen monella eri tavalla. Tätä varten tarvitaan leikkaussuunnitelma, jonka muodostamiseksi on ratkaistava sekalukuoptimointiongelma. Sekalukuoptimointiongelmat ovat optimoinnin haastavin muoto. Niitä on tutkittu yksinkertaisempiin optimointiongelmiin nähden vähän. Nykyisten tietokoneiden laskentateho on kuitenkin mahdollistanut raskaampien ja monimutkaisempien optimointialgoritmien käytön ja kehittämisen. Työssä on käytetty ja esitetty eräs stokastisen optimoinnin menetelmä, differentiaalievoluutioalgoritmi. Tässä työssä esitetään teräksen leikkausoptimointialgoritmi. Kehitetty optimointimenetelmä toimii dynaamisesti tehdasympäristössä käyttäjien määrittelemien parametrien mukaisesti. Työ on osa Syncron Tech Oy:n Ovako Bar Oy Ab:lle toimittamaa ohjausjärjestelmää.

Abstract Imatinib (Glivec~ has transformed the treatment and prognosis of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). However, the treatment must be taken indefinitely and is not devoid of inconvenience and toxicity. Moreover, resistance or escape from disease control occurs. Considering the large interindividual differences in the function of the enzymatic and transport systems involved in imatinib disposition, exposure to this drug can be expected to vary widely among patients. Among those known systems is a cytochrome P450 (CYI'3A4) that metabolizes imatinib, the multidrug transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp; product of the MDR1 gene) that expels imatinib out of cells, and al-acid glycoprotein (AGP), a circulating protein binding imatinib in the plasma. The aim of this observational study was to explore the influence of these covariates on imatinib pharmacokinetics (PK), to assess the interindividual variability of the PK parameters of the drug, and to evaluate whether imatinib use would benefit from a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) program. A total of 321 plasma concentrations were measured in 59 patients receiving imatinib, using a validated chromatographic method developed for this study (HPLC-LTV). The results were analyzed by non-linear mixed effect modeling (NONMEM). A one-compartment pharmacokinetic model with first-order absorption appropriately described the data, and a large interindividual variability was observed. The MDK> polymorphism 3435C>T and the CYP3A4 activity appeared to modulate the disposition of imatinib, albeit not significantly. A hyperbolic relationship between plasma AGP levels and oral clearance, as well as volume of distribution, was observed. A mechanistic approach was built up, postulating that only the unbound imatinib concentration was able to undergo first-order elimination. This approach allowed determining an average free clearance (CL,~ of 13101/h and a volume of distribution (Vd) of 301 1. By comparison, the total clearance determined was 141/h (i.e. 233 ml/min). Free clearance was affected by body weight and pathology diagnosis. The estimated variability of imatinib disposition (17% for CLu and 66% for Vd) decreased globally about one half with the model incorporating the AGP impact. Moreover, some associations were observed between PK parameters of the free imatinib concentration and its efficacy and toxicity. Finally, the functional influence of P-gp activity has been demonstrated in vitro in cell cultures. These elements are arguments to further investigate the possible usefulness of a TDM program for imatinib. It may help in individualizing the dosing regimen before overt disease progression or development of treatment toxicity, thus improving both the long-term therapeutic effectiveness and tolerability of this drug. Il s'agit toutefois d'un traitement non dénué d'inconvénients et de toxicité, et qui doit être pris indéfiniment. Par ailleurs, une résistance, ou des échappements au traitement, sont également rencontrés. Le devenir de ce médicament dans l'organisme dépend de systèmes enzymatiques et de transport connus pour présenter de grandes différences interindividuelles, et l'on peut s'attendre à ce que l'exposition à ce médicament varie largement d'un patient à l'autre. Parmi ces systèmes, on note un cytochrome P450 (le CYP3A4) métabolisant l'imatinib, la P-glycoprotéine (P-gp ;codée par le gène MDR1), un transporteur d'efflux expulsant le médicament hors des cellules, et l'atglycoprotéine acide (AAG), une protéine circulante sur laquelle se fixe l'imatinib dans le plasma. L'objectif de la présente étude clinique a été de déterminer l'influence de ces covariats sur la pharmacocinétique (PK) de l'imatinib, d'établir la variabilité interindividuelle des paramètres PK du médicament, et d'évaluer dans quelle mesure l'imatinib pouvait bénéficier d'un programme de suivi thérapeutique (TDM). En utilisant une méthode chromatographique développée et validée à cet effet (HPLC-UV), un total de 321 concentrations plasmatiques a été dosé chez 59 patients recevant de l'imatinib. Les résultats ont été analysés par modélisation non linéaire à effets mixtes (NONMEM). Un modèle pharmacocinétique à un compartiment avec absorption de premier ordre a permis de décrire les données, et une grande variabilité interindividuelle a été observée. Le polymorphisme du gène MDK1 3435C>T et l'activité du CYP3A4 ont montré une influence, toutefois non significative, sur le devenir de l'imatinib. Une relation hyperbolique entre les taux plasmatiques d'AAG et la clairance, comme le volume de distribution, a été observée. Une approche mécanistique a donc été élaborée, postulant que seule la concentration libre subissait une élimination du premier ordre. Cette approche a permis de déterminer une clairance libre moyenne (CLlibre) de 13101/h et un volume de distribution (Vd) de 301 l. Par comparaison, la clairance totale était de 141/h (c.à.d. 233 ml/min). La CLlibre est affectée par le poids corporel et le type de pathologie. La variabilité interindividuelle estimée pour le devenir de l'imatinib (17% sur CLlibre et 66% sur Vd) diminuait globalement de moitié avec le modèle incorporant l'impact de l'AAG. De plus, une certaine association entre les paramètres PK de la concentration d'imatinib libre et l'efficacité et la toxicité a été observée. Finalement, l'influence fonctionnelle de l'activité de la P-gp a été démontrée in nitro dans des cultures cellulaires. Ces divers éléments constituent des arguments pour étudier davantage l'utilité potentielle d'un programme de TDM appliqué à l'imatinib. Un tel suivi pourrait aider à l'individualisation des régimes posologiques avant la progression manifeste de la maladie ou l'apparition de toxicité, améliorant tant l'efficacité que la tolérabilité de ce médicament. Il s'agit toutefois d'un traitement non dénué d'inconvénients et de toxicité, et qui doit être pris indéfiniment. De plus, des résistances ou des échappements au traitement sont également rencontrés. Le devenir de ce médicament dans le corps humain (dont l'étude relève de la discipline appelée pharmacocinétique) dépend de systèmes connus pour présenter de grandes différences entre les individus, et l'on peut s'attendre à ce que l'exposition à ce médicament varie largement d'un patient à l'autre. Parmi ces systèmes, l'un est responsable de la dégradation du médicament dans le foie (métabolisme), l'autre de l'expulsion du médicament hors des cellules cibles, alors que le dernier consiste en une protéine (dénommée AAG) qui transporte l'imatinib dans le sang. L'objectif de notre étude a été de déterminer l'influence de ces différents systèmes sur le comportement pharmacocinétique de l'imatinib chez les patients, et d'étudier dans quelle mesure le devenir de ce médicament dans l'organisme variait d'un patient à l'autre. Enfin, cette étude avait pour but d'évaluer à quel point la surveillance des concentrations d'imatinib présentes dans le sang pourrait améliorer le traitement des patients cancéreux. Une telle surveillance permet en fait de connaître l'exposition effective de l'organisme au médicament (concept abrégé par le terme anglais TDM, pour Therapeutic Drag Monitoring. Ce projet de recherche a d'abord nécessité la mise au point d'une méthode d'analyse pour la mesure des quantités (ou concentrations) d'imatinib présentes dans le sang. Cela nous a permis d'effectuer régulièrement des mesures chez 59 patients. Il nous a ainsi été possible de décrire le devenir du médicament dans le corps à l'aide de modèles mathématiques. Nous avons notamment pu déterminer chez ces patients la vitesse à laquelle l'imatinib est éliminé du sang et l'étendue de sa distribution dans l'organisme. Nous avons également observé chez les patients que les concentrations sanguines d'imatinib étaient très variables d'un individu à l'autre pour une même dose de médicament ingérée. Nous avons pu aussi mettre en évidence que les concentrations de la protéine AAG, sur laquelle l'imatinib se lie dans le sang, avait une grande influence sur la vitesse à laquelle le médicament est éliminé de l'organisme. Ensuite, en tenant compte des concentrations sanguines d'imatinib et de cette protéine, nous avons également pu calculer les quantités de médicament non liées à cette protéine (= libres), qui sont seules susceptibles d'avoir une activité anticancéreuse. Enfin, il a été possible d'établir qu'il existait une certaine relation entre ces concentrations, l'effet thérapeutique et la toxicité du traitement. Tous ces éléments constituent des arguments pour approfondir encore l'étude de l'utilité d'un programme de TDM appliqué à l'imatinib. Comme chaque patient est différent, un tel suivi pourrait aider à l'ajustement des doses du médicament avant la progression manifeste de la maladie ou l'apparition de toxicité, améliorant ainsi tant son efficacité que son innocuité.

Control applications of switched mode power supplies have been widely investigated. The main objective ofresearch and development (R&D) in this field is always to find the most suitable control method to be implemented in various DC/DC converter topologies. Inother words, the goal is to select a control method capable of improving the efficiency of the converter, reducing the effect of disturbances (line and load variation), lessening the effect of EMI (electro magnetic interference), and beingless effected by component variation. The main objective of this research work is to study different control methods implemented in switched mode power supplies namely (PID control, hysteresis control, adaptive control, current programmed control, variable structure control (VSC), and sliding mode control (SMC). The advantages and drawbacks of each control method are given. Two control methods, the PID and the SMC are selected and their effects on DC/DC (Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost) converters are examined. Matlab/SimulinkTM is used to implement PID control method in DC/DC Buck converter and SMC in DC/DC (Buck, and Buck Boost) converters. For the prototype, operational amplifiers (op-amps) are used to implement PID control in DC/DC Buck converter. For SMC op-amps are implemented in DC/DC Buck converter and dSPACETM is used to control the DC/DC Buck-Boost converter. The SMC can be applied to the DC/DC (Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost) converters. A comparison of the effects of the PID control and the SMC on the DC/DC Buck converter response in steady state, under line variations, load variations, and different component variations is performed. Also the Conducted RF-Emissions between the PID and SMC DC/DC Buck Converter are compared. The thesis shows that, in comparison with the PID control, the SMC provides better steady-state response, better dynamic response, less EMI, inherent order reduction, robustness against system uncertainty disturbances, and an implicit stability proof. Giving a better steady-state and dynamic response, the SMC is implemented in a DC/DC resonant converter. The half-wave zero current switching (HWZCS) DC/DC Buck converter is selected as a converter topology. A general guideline to select the tank component values, needed for the designing of a HWZCS DC/DC Buck, is obtained. The implementation of the SMC to a HWZCS DC/DC Buck converter is analysed. The converter response is investigated in the steady-state region and in the dynamic region.

We give sufficient conditions for integrability in polar coordinates. Finally we establish a conjecture about the independence of the two classes of parameters which appear in the system; if this conjecture is true the integrable cases found will be the only possible ones.

The need for high performance, high precision, and energy saving in rotating machinery demands an alternative solution to traditional bearings. Because of the contactless operation principle, the rotating machines employing active magnetic bearings (AMBs) provide many advantages over the traditional ones. The advantages such as contamination-free operation, low maintenance costs, high rotational speeds, low parasitic losses, programmable stiffness and damping, and vibration insulation come at expense of high cost, and complex technical solution. All these properties make the use of AMBs appropriate primarily for specific and highly demanding applications. High performance and high precision control requires model-based control methods and accurate models of the flexible rotor. In turn, complex models lead to high-order controllers and feature considerable computational burden. Fortunately, in the last few years the advancements in signal processing devices provide new perspective on the real-time control of AMBs. The design and the real-time digital implementation of the high-order LQ controllers, which focus on fast execution times, are the subjects of this work. In particular, the control design and implementation in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) circuits are investigated. The optimal design is guided by the physical constraints of the system for selecting the optimal weighting matrices. The plant model is complemented by augmenting appropriate disturbance models. The compensation of the force-field nonlinearities is proposed for decreasing the uncertainty of the actuator. A disturbance-observer-based unbalance compensation for canceling the magnetic force vibrations or vibrations in the measured positions is presented. The theoretical studies are verified by the practical experiments utilizing a custom-built laboratory test rig. The test rig uses a prototyping control platform developed in the scope of this work. To sum up, the work makes a step in the direction of an embedded single-chip FPGA-based controller of AMBs.

In this article we presents a project [1] developed to demonstrate the capability that Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP) have to approximate non-linear functions [2]. The simulation has been implemented in Java to be used in all the computers by Internet [3], with a simple operation and pleasant interface. The power of the simulations is in the possibility of the user of seeing the evolutions of the approaches, the contribution of each neuron, the control of the different parameters, etc. In addition, to guide the user during the simulation, an online help has been implemented.

The time required to image large samples is an important limiting factor in SPM-based systems. In multiprobe setups, especially when working with biological samples, this drawback can make impossible to conduct certain experiments. In this work, we present a feedfordward controller based on bang-bang and adaptive controls. The controls are based in the difference between the maximum speeds that can be used for imaging depending on the flatness of the sample zone. Topographic images of Escherichia coli bacteria samples were acquired using the implemented controllers. Results show that to go faster in the flat zones, rather than using a constant scanning speed for the whole image, speeds up the imaging process of large samples by up to a 4x factor.

Tuotantotehokkuus näyttelee yhä suurempaa roolia teollisuudessa, minkä vuoksi myös pakkauslinjastoille joudutaan asettamaan suuria vaatimuksia. Usein leikkaus- ja kappaleensiirtosovelluksissa käytetään lineaarisia ruuvikäyttöjä, jotka voitaisiin tietyin edellytyksin korvata halvemmilla ja osittain suorituskykyisimmillä hammashihnavetoisilla johteilla. Yleensä paikkasäädetty työsolu muodostuu kahden tai kolmen eri koordinaatistoakselin suuntaan asennetuista johteista. Tällaisen työsolun paikoitustarkkuuteen vaikuttavat muun muassa käytetty säätörakenne, moottorisäätöketjun viiveet, sekä laitteiston eri epälineaarisuudet, kuten kitka. Tässä työssä esitetään lineaarisen hammashihnaservokäytön dynaamista käytöstä kuvaava matemaattinen malli ja laaditaan mallin pohjalta laitteen simulointimalli. Mallin toimivuus varmistetaan käytännön identifiointitesteillä. Lisäksi työssä tutkitaan, kuinka hyvään suorituskykyyn lineaarinen hammashihnaservokäyttö kykenee, jos teollisuudessa paikoitussäätörakenteena tyypillisesti käytetty kaskadirakenne tai PID-rakenne korvataan kehittyneemmällä mallipohjaisella tilasäädinrakenteella. Säädön toimintaa arvioidaan simulointien ja koelaitteistolla suoritettavien mittausten perusteella.

BACKGROUND: The most important adverse effect of BoNT-A is the systemic diffusion of the toxin. There is some evidence that the administration of high doses can increase the risk of systemic diffusion and the development of clinically evident adverse effects, however an international consensus does not exist about its maximum dose. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in autonomic heart drive induced by high doses (higher than 600 units) of incobotulinumtoxinA injection in spastic stroke patients. Moreover, the treatment safety by monitoring adverse events occurrence was assessed. DESIGN: Case control study. POPULATION: Eleven stroke survivors with spastic hemiplegia. METHODS: Patients were treated with intramuscular focal injections of IncobotulinumtoxinA (NT 201; Xeomin®, Merz Pharmaceuticals GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany). Doses were below 12 units/Kg. Each patient underwent an ECG recording before injection and 10 days after treatment. Linear and non-linear Heart Rate variability (HRV) measures were derived from ECGs with a dedicated software. RESULTS: None of the variable considered showed statistically significant changes after BoNT-A injection. CONCLUSION: The use of incobotulinumtoxinA in adult patients at doses up to 12 units/kg seems to be safe regarding autonomic heart drive. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The use of IncobotulinumtoxinA up to 600 units could be a safe therapeutic option in spastic hemiplegic stroke survivors.

Rosin is a natural product from pine forests and it is used as a raw material in resinate syntheses. Resinates are polyvalent metal salts of rosin acids and especially Ca- and Ca/Mg- resinates find wide application in the printing ink industry. In this thesis, analytical methods were applied to increase general knowledge of resinate chemistry and the reaction kinetics was studied in order to model the non linear solution viscosity increase during resinate syntheses by the fusion method. Solution viscosity in toluene is an important quality factor for resinates to be used in printing inks. The concept of critical resinate concentration, c crit, was introduced to define an abrupt change in viscosity dependence on resinate concentration in the solution. The concept was then used to explain the non-inear solution viscosity increase during resinate syntheses. A semi empirical model with two estimated parameters was derived for the viscosity increase on the basis of apparent reaction kinetics. The model was used to control the viscosity and to predict the total reaction time of the resinate process. The kinetic data from the complex reaction media was obtained by acid value titration and by FTIR spectroscopic analyses using a conventional calibration method to measure the resinate concentration and the concentration of free rosin acids. A multivariate calibration method was successfully applied to make partial least square (PLS) models for monitoring acid value and solution viscosity in both mid-infrared (MIR) and near infrared (NIR) regions during the syntheses. The calibration models can be used for on line resinate process monitoring. In kinetic studies, two main reaction steps were observed during the syntheses. First a fast irreversible resination reaction occurs at 235 °C and then a slow thermal decarboxylation of rosin acids starts to take place at 265 °C. Rosin oil is formed during the decarboxylation reaction step causing significant mass loss as the rosin oil evaporates from the system while the viscosity increases to the target level. The mass balance of the syntheses was determined based on the resinate concentration increase during the decarboxylation reaction step. A mechanistic study of the decarboxylation reaction was based on the observation that resinate molecules are partly solvated by rosin acids during the syntheses. Different decarboxylation mechanisms were proposed for the free and solvating rosin acids. The deduced kinetic model supported the analytical data of the syntheses in a wide resinate concentration region, over a wide range of viscosity values and at different reaction temperatures. In addition, the application of the kinetic model to the modified resinate syntheses gave a good fit. A novel synthesis method with the addition of decarboxylated rosin (i.e. rosin oil) to the reaction mixture was introduced. The conversion of rosin acid to resinate was increased to the level necessary to obtain the target viscosity for the product at 235 °C. Due to a lower reaction temperature than in traditional fusion synthesis at 265 °C, thermal decarboxylation is avoided. As a consequence, the mass yield of the resinate syntheses can be increased from ca. 70% to almost 100% by recycling the added rosin oil.

This paper presents a study on the dynamics of the rattling problem in gearboxes under non-ideal excitation. The subject has being analyzed by a number of authors such as Karagiannis and Pfeiffer (1991), for the ideal excitation case. An interesting model of the same problem by Moon (1992) has been recently used by Souza and Caldas (1999) to detect chaotic behavior. We consider two spur gears with different diameters and gaps between the teeth. Suppose the motion of one gear to be given while the motion of the other is governed by its dynamics. In the ideal case, the driving wheel is supposed to undergo a sinusoidal motion with given constant amplitude and frequency. In this paper, we consider the motion to be a function of the system response and a limited energy source is adopted. Thus an extra degree of freedom is introduced in the problem. The equations of motion are obtained via a Lagrangian approach with some assumed characteristic torque curves. Next, extensive numerical integration is used to detect some interesting geometrical aspects of regular and irregular motions of the system response.

The pumping processes requiring wide range of flow are often equipped with parallelconnected centrifugal pumps. In parallel pumping systems, the use of variable speed control allows that the required output for the process can be delivered with a varying number of operated pump units and selected rotational speed references. However, the optimization of the parallel-connected rotational speed controlled pump units often requires adaptive modelling of both parallel pump characteristics and the surrounding system in varying operation conditions. The available information required for the system modelling in typical parallel pumping applications such as waste water treatment and various cooling and water delivery pumping tasks can be limited, and the lack of real-time operation point monitoring often sets limits for accurate energy efficiency optimization. Hence, alternatives for easily implementable control strategies which can be adopted with minimum system data are necessary. This doctoral thesis concentrates on the methods that allow the energy efficient use of variable speed controlled parallel pumps in system scenarios in which the parallel pump units consist of a centrifugal pump, an electric motor, and a frequency converter. Firstly, the suitable operation conditions for variable speed controlled parallel pumps are studied. Secondly, methods for determining the output of each parallel pump unit using characteristic curve-based operation point estimation with frequency converter are discussed. Thirdly, the implementation of the control strategy based on real-time pump operation point estimation and sub-optimization of each parallel pump unit is studied. The findings of the thesis support the idea that the energy efficiency of the pumping can be increased without the installation of new, more efficient components in the systems by simply adopting suitable control strategies. An easily implementable and adaptive control strategy for variable speed controlled parallel pumping systems can be created by utilizing the pump operation point estimation available in modern frequency converters. Hence, additional real-time flow metering, start-up measurements, and detailed system model are unnecessary, and the pumping task can be fulfilled by determining a speed reference for each parallel-pump unit which suggests the energy efficient operation of the pumping system.
