The SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) program is an ambitious re-search and development initiative to design the future European air traffic man-agement (ATM) system. The study of the behavior of ATM systems using agent-based modeling and simulation tools can help the development of new methods to improve their performance. This paper presents an overview of existing agent-based approaches in air transportation (paying special attention to the challenges that exist for the design of future ATM systems) and, subsequently, describes a new agent-based approach that we proposed in the CASSIOPEIA project, which was developed according to the goals of the SESAR program. In our approach, we use agent models for different ATM stakeholders, and, in contrast to previous work, our solution models new collaborative decision processes for flow traffic management, it uses an intermediate level of abstraction (useful for simulations at larger scales), and was designed to be a practical tool (open and reusable) for the development of different ATM studies. It was successfully applied in three stud-ies related to the design of future ATM systems in Europe.

Mode switches are used to partition the system’s behavior into different modes to reduce the complexity of large embedded systems. Such systems operate in multiple modes in which each one corresponds to a specific application scenario; these are called Multi-Mode Systems (MMS). A different piece of software is normally executed for each mode. At any given time, the system can be in one of the predefined modes and then be switched to another as a result of a certain condition. A mode switch mechanism (or mode change protocol) is used to shift the system from one mode to another at run-time. In this thesis we have used a hierarchical scheduling framework to implement a multi-mode system called Multi-Mode Hierarchical Scheduling Framework (MMHSF). A two-level Hierarchical Scheduling Framework (HSF) has already been implemented in an open source real-time operating system, FreeRTOS, to support temporal isolation among real-time components. The main contribution of this thesis is the extension of the HSF featuring a multimode feature with an emphasis on making minimal changes in the underlying operating system (FreeRTOS) and its HSF implementation. Our implementation uses fixed-priority preemptive scheduling at both local and global scheduling levels and idling periodic servers. It also now supports different modes of the system which can be switched at run-time. Each subsystem and task exhibit different timing attributes according to mode, and upon a Mode Change Request (MCR) the task-set and timing interfaces of the entire system (including subsystems and tasks) undergo a change. A Mode Change Protocol specifies precisely how the system-mode will be changed. However, an application may not only need to change a mode but also a different mode change protocol semantic. For example, the mode change from normal to shutdown can allow all the tasks to be completed before the mode itself is changed, while changing a mode from normal to emergency may require aborting all tasks instantly. In our work, both the system mode and the mode change protocol can be changed at run-time. We have implemented three different mode change protocols to switch from one mode to another: the Suspend/resume protocol, the Abort protocol, and the Complete protocol. These protocols increase the flexibility of the system, allowing users to select the way they want to switch to a new mode. The implementation of MMHSF is tested and evaluated on an AVR-based 32 bit board EVK1100 with an AVR32UC3A0512 micro-controller. We have tested the behavior of each system mode and for each mode change protocol. We also provide the results for the performance measures of all mode change protocols in the thesis.

Canberra, the ?Bush Capital? of Australia, was a project torn between ambition and avoidance. For fear of upsetting Sydney or Melbourne, its location avoided larger territorial aspirations but its crystalline winning scheme was bold, and contained the promise of enlightened irradiation. Postwar Canberra, like so many other cities at the time, let its future be designed by Cold-War traffic engineers, who confidently turned dream into sprawl and highways. Although Canberra s mix of ambition and banality, of symbolic desire and structural normalcy, may be precisely what a good city is all about, it probably contains these in defective proportions. What Canberra needs is just a little more of itself, in different amounts, to a higher pressure from the inside. We can easily imagine the multiplying of the original Griffin plan, adding the city onto itself, organizing the recent sprawl with new nodes and public transport with more urban streets between them. With this reclaimed space for higher density, Canberra can then grow from the inside instead of sprawling away, lowering its expenditure on transport and its carbon and sustainability footprint. The new nodes will be denser and allow for variety and change in its programmatic design. Minor but detailed changes in street and public space design will also allow for easier multi-species (people, animals?) access to urban and natural resources. The growing complexity, heterogeneity and dynamism inherent in telecommunications networks, distributed systems and the emerging advanced information and communication services, as well as their increased criticality and strategic importance, calls for the adoption of increasingly more sophisticated technologies for their management, coordination and integration by network operators, service providers and end-user companies to assure adequate levels of functionality, performance and reliability. The management strategies adopted traditionally follow models that are too static and centralised, have a high supervision component and are difficult to scale. The pressing need to flexibilise management and, at the same time, make it more scalable and robust recently led to a lot of interest in developing new paradigms based on hierarchical and distributed models, as a natural evolution from the first weakly distributed hierarchical models that succeeded the centralised paradigm. Thus new models based on management by delegation, the mobile code paradigm, distributed objects and web services came into being. These alternatives have turned out to be enormously robust, flexible and scalable as compared with the traditional management strategies. However, many problems still remain to be solved. Current research lines assume that the distributed hierarchical paradigm has as yet failed to solve many of the problems related to robustness, scalability and flexibility and advocate migration towards a strongly distributed cooperative paradigm. These lines of research were spawned by Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) and, specifically, the autonomous agent paradigm and Multi-Agent Systems (MAS). They all revolve around a series of objectives, which can be summarised as achieving greater management functionality autonomy and a greater self-configuration capability, which solves the problems of scalability and the need for supervision that plague current systems, evolving towards strongly distributed and goal-driven cooperative control techniques and semantically enhancing information models. More and more researchers are starting to use agents for network and distributed systems management. However, the boundaries established in their work between mobile agents (that follow the mobile code paradigm) and autonomous agents (that really follow the cooperative paradigm) are fuzzy. Many of these approximations focus on the use of mobile agents, which, as was the case with the above-mentioned mobile code techniques, means that they can inject more dynamism into the traditional concept of management by delegation. Accordingly, they are able to flexibilise management, distribute management logic about data and distribute control. However, they remain within the distributed hierarchical paradigm. While a management architecture faithful to the strongly distributed cooperative paradigm has yet to be defined, these lines of research have revealed that the information, communication and organisation models of existing management architectures are far from adequate. In this context, this dissertation presents an architectural model for the holonic management of distributed systems and services through autonomous agent societies. The main objectives of this model are to raise the level of management task automation, increase the scalability of management solutions, provide support for delegation by both domains and macro-tasks and achieve a high level of interoperability in open environments. Bearing in mind these objectives, a descriptive logic-based formal semantic information model has been developed, which increases management automation by using rational autonomous agents capable of reasoning, inferring and dynamically integrating knowledge and services conceptualised by means of the CIM model and formalised at the semantic level by means of descriptive logic. The information model also includes a mapping, at the CIM metamodel level, to the OWL ontology specification language, which amounts to a significant advance in the field of XML-based model and metainformation representation and exchange. At the interaction level, the model introduces a formal specification language (ACSL) of conversations between agents based on speech act theory and contributes an operational semantics for this language that eases the task of verifying formal properties associated with the interaction protocol. A role-oriented holonic organisational model has also been developed, whose main features meet the requirements demanded by emerging distributed services, including no centralised control, dynamic restructuring capabilities, cooperative skills and facilities for adaptation to different organisational cultures. The model includes a normative submodel adapted to management holon autonomy and based on the deontic and action modal logics.

ABSTRACT This Thesis presents an efficient method for solving the forward dynamics of a multi-body sys-tem formed by rigid and flexible bodies with small strains for real-time simulation of real-life models. It is based on topological formulations. The presented work focuses on the efficient solution of the most time-consuming tasks of the simulation process, such as the numerical integration of the motion differential equations and in particular the evaluation of the inertia terms corresponding to the flexible bodies. The dynamic equations are formulated in terms of independent variables of the muti-body system, and they are integrated by means of implicit index-3 formulae. The Thesis is arranged in six chapters. Chapter 1 presents a review of the most relevant and recent contributions related to the modelization of flexible multi-body systems and the integration of the corresponding dynamic equations. The main objectives of the Thesis are also presented in detail. Chapter 2 presents a semi-recursive method for solving the equations of a multi-body system with flexible bodies based on topological formulations and modal synthesis. This Thesis uses the floating frame approach and the modal amplitudes to define the position of any point at the flexible body. These modal deformed shapes are obtained by means of the Finite Element Method. Particular attention has been taken to the boundary conditions used to define the deformation of the flexible bodies. Chapter 3 focuses on the evaluation of the inertia terms, which is usually a very time-consuming task. A new method based on the use of 24 constant matrices is presented. These matrices are evaluated during the set-up step, before the integration process. They allow the calculation of the inertia terms in terms of the position and orientation of the local coordinate system and the deformation variables, and there is no need to evaluate the position and velocities of all the nodes of the FEM mesh. A deep analysis of the inertia terms is performed in order to optimize the evaluation process, reducing both the terms used and the number of arithmetic operations. Two possible simplifications are presented: the first one uses a non-consistent approach in order to define the inertia terms respect to the Cartesian coordinates of the FEM mesh, rejecting those corresponding to the angular rotations; the second approach makes use of lumped mass matrices. Based on the previously presented formulation, Chapter 4 is focused on the numerical integration of the motion differential equations. A new predictor-corrector method based on index-3 formulae and on the use of multi-body independent variables is presented. The evaluation of the dynamic equations in a new time step needs the solution of a set on nonlinear equations by a Newton-Raphson iterative process. The computation of the corresponding residual vector is performed efficiently by taking advantage of the system’s topological structure. Three methods to compute the tangent matrix are presented: an approximated evaluation that considers only the most relevant terms, a numerical approach based on finite differences and a recursive method that uses the topological structure. The method presented for integrating the dynamic equations can use a variety of integration formulae. This Thesis analyses the use of the trapezoidal rule, the 2nd order BDF formula and the hybrid TR-BDF2 method. A variable-time step strategy is presented for the last one. Chapter 5 describes the implementation of the proposed method in a general purpose pro-gram for solving any multibody defined by a data file. This program is implemented both in C++ and Java. Four examples are used to check the validity of the formulation and to compare this method with other methods commonly used to solve the dynamic equations of multi-body systems containing flexible bodies. The efficiency of the programming methodology used and the effect of the possible simplifications proposed are also analyzed. Chapter 6 summarizes the main Conclusions obtained in this Thesis and the new lines of research that have been opened.

ABSTRACT Multiuser Videoconferencing and real-time collaboration systems allow users to communicate using video, audio and data streams. These systems have been historically expensive to obtain and maintain. Over the last few decades, technological breakthroughs have mitigated those costs and popularized real time video communication, allowing its use in environments such as education or health. The last big evolutionary leap forward has been the transition of these types of applications towards theWeb. Several technologies have allowed this journey to theWeb browser. Firstly, Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) enable the creation of dynamic Web pages that defy the classical request-response interaction and provide an experience similar to their native counterparts. On the other hand, Cloud Computing brings the leasing of virtualized hardware resources in a pay-peruse model and, with it, better scalability in resource-demanding services. However, as with every change, this evolution imposes a set of challenges on existing videoconferencing solutions. This dissertation proposes a set of architectures, mechanisms and algorithms that aim to adapt multi-conferencing systems to the Web platform, taking into account the variety of devices and access networks that come with it. To this end, this thesis starts with a study concerning the requirements that must be met by new Web videoconferencing systems. The result of this study is the design, development and implementation of a new videoconferencing services that provides advanced collaboration to its user by providing video and audio communication as well as desktop sharing. After this, a new communication system between Web and native applications is presented. This system proposes adaptation mechanisms to bridge the two worlds providing a seamless integration transparent to users who can now access the powerful native application via an easy Web interface. The next step is to identify the main challenges posed by multi-conferencing on small devices (smartphones) with heterogeneous access networks. This dissertation proposes a mechanism that combines transcoding and adaptive quality algorithms to overcome those limitations. A second iteration in this dissertation is motivated by WebRTC. WebRTC appears as a disrupting technology by enabling new real-time communication possibilities in browsers. A new mechanism for flexible videoconferencing server scalability is presented. This mechanism aims to address the strong scalability requirements in the Web environment by taking advantage of Cloud Computing. Finally, the dissertation discusses the results obtained throughout the study, capturing the evolution of Web videoconferencing systems.

The Plasmodium falciparum Genome Database (http://PlasmoDB.org) integrates sequence information, automated analyses and annotation data emerging from the P.falciparum genome sequencing consortium. To date, raw sequence coverage is available for >90% of the genome, and two chromosomes have been finished and annotated. Data in PlasmoDB are organized by chromosome (1–14), and can be accessed using a variety of tools for graphical and text-based browsing or downloaded in various file formats. The GUS (Genomics Unified Schema) implementation of PlasmoDB provides a multi-species genomic relational database, incorporating data from human and mouse, as well as P.falciparum. The relational schema uses a highly structured format to accommodate diverse data sets related to genomic sequence and gene expression. Tools have been designed to facilitate complex biological queries, including many that are specific to Plasmodium parasites and malaria as a disease. Additional projects seek to integrate genomic information with the rich data sets now becoming available for RNA transcription, protein expression, metabolic pathways, genetic and physical mapping, antigenic and population diversity, and phylogenetic relationships with other apicomplexan parasites. The overall goal of PlasmoDB is to facilitate Internet- and CD-ROM-based access to both finished and unfinished sequence information by the global malaria research community.

Sovereign powers are not absolute but exercised in varying areas and to varying degrees by sub-state, state and supra-state entities. The upward dispersion of power to international organisations carries implications for the sub-state level, while sub-state governance poses demands as to the conduct of governance at the international level. It is well recognised that sub-state entities, such as federal states and autonomies, may have the (restricted) capacity to enter into international relations. But what capacities do international organisations have to accommodate autonomies in their institutional frameworks? This paper shall present a case study of one such framework, namely Nordic co-operation and the accommodation of the Nordic autonomies, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland, within its institutional framework. Within ‘Norden’, the position of autonomies has been scrutinised and adapted on several occasions, in the late 1960s, early 1980s and in the mid-2000s. The accommodation of the autonomies has been discussed in light of evident implications of statehood and international legal personality and the institutional arrangements eventually carved serve well to illustrate the challenges and opportunities international organisations face in the attempt to accommodate multi-level systems.

Warming and acidification of the oceans as a consequence of increasing CO2-concentrations occur at large scales. Numerous studies have shown the impact of single stressors on individual species. However, studies on the combined effect of multiple stressors on a multi-species assemblage, which is ecologically much more realistic and relevant, are still scarce. Therefore, we orthogonally crossed the two factors warming and acidification in mesocosm experiments and studied their single and combined impact on the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus associated with its natural community (epiphytes and mesograzers) in the Baltic Sea in all seasons (from April 2013 to April 2014). We superimposed our treatment factors onto the natural fluctuations of all environmental variables present in the Benthocosms in so-called delta-treatments. Thereby we compared the physiological responses of F. vesiculosus (growth and metabolites) to the single and combined effects of natural Kiel Fjord temperatures and pCO2 conditions with a 5 °C temperature increase and/or pCO2 increase treatment (1100 ppm in the headspace above the mesocosms). Responses were also related to the factor photoperiod which changes over the course of the year. Our results demonstrate complex seasonal pattern. Elevated pCO2 positively affected growth of F. vesiculosus alone and/or interactively with warming. The response direction (additive, synergistic or antagonistic), however, depended on season and daylength. The effects were most obvious when plants were actively growing during spring and early summer. Our study revealed for the first time that it is crucial to always consider the impact of variable environmental conditions throughout all seasons. In summary, our study indicates that in future F. vesiculosus will be more affected by detrimental summer heat-waves than by ocean acidification although the latter consequently enhances growth throughout the year. The mainly negative influence of rising temperatures on the physiology of this keystone macroalga may alter and/or hamper its ecological functions in the shallow coastal ecosystem of the Baltic Sea.

First principles simulations of the quantum dynamics of interacting Bose gases using the stochastic gauge representation are analysed. In a companion paper, we showed how the positive-P representation can be applied to these problems using stochastic differential equations. That method, however, is limited by increased sampling error as time evolves. Here, we show how the sampling error can be greatly reduced and the simulation time significantly extended using stochastic gauges. In particular, local stochastic gauges (a subset) are investigated. Improvements are confirmed in numerical calculations of single-, double- and multi-mode systems in the weak-mode coupling regime. Convergence issues are investigated, including the recognition of two modes by which stochastic equations produced by phase-space methods in general can diverge: movable singularities and a noise-weight relationship. The example calculated here displays wave-like behaviour in spatial correlation functions propagating in a uniform 1D gas after a sudden change in the coupling constant. This could in principle be tested experimentally using Feshbach resonance methods.
