Ferralsols have high structural stability, although structural degradation has been observed to result from forest to tillage or pasture conversion. An experimental series of forest skidder passes in an east Amazonian natural forest was performed for testing the effects of mechanical stress during selective logging operations on a clay-rich Ferralsol under both dry and wet soil conditions. Distinct ruts formed up to 25 cm depth only under wet conditions. After nine passes the initially very low surface bulk density of between 0.69 and 0.80 g cm(-3) increased to 1.05 g cm(-3) in the wet soil and 0.92 g cm(-3) in the dry soil. Saturated hydraulic conductivities, initially > 250 mm h(-1), declined to a minimum of around 10 mm h(-1) in the wet soil after the first pass, and in the dry soil more gradually after nine passes. The contrasting response of bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity is explained by exposure of subsoil material at the base of the ruts where macrostructure rapidly deteriorated under wet conditions. We attribute the resultant moderately high hydraulic conductivities to the formation of stable microaggregates with fine sand to coarse silt textures. We conclude that the topsoil macrostructure of Ferralsols is subject to similar deterioration to that of Luvisols in temperate zones. The stable microstructure prevents marked compaction and decrease in hydraulic conductivity under wetter and more plastic soil conditions. However, typical tropical storms may regularly exceed the infiltration capacity of the deformed soils. In the deeper ruts water may concentrate and cause surface run-off, even in gently sloping areas. To avoid soil erosion, logging operations in sloping areas should therefore be restricted to dry soil conditions when rut formation is minimal.

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy has been proposed as new method for determining the degree of humification of organic matter (OM) in whole soils. It can be also used to analyze the OM in whole soils containing large amounts of paramagnetic materials, and which are neither feasible to Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) nor to C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In the present study, 3 LIF spectroscopy was used to investigate the OM in a Brazilian Oxisol containing high concentration of Fe+3. Soil samples were collected from two areas under conventional tillage (CT), two areas under no-till management (NT) and from a non-cultivated (NC) area under natural vegetation. The results of LIF spectroscopic analysis of the top layer (0-5 cm) of whole soils showed a less aromatic OM in the non-cultivated than in the cultivated soils. This is consistent with data corresponding to HA samples extracted from the same soils and analyzed by EPR, NMR and conventional fluorescence spectroscopy. The OM of whole soils at 5-10 and 10-20 cm depth was also characterized by LIF spectroscopy.Analysis of samples of NT and NC soils showed a higher OM aromatic content at depth. This is a consequence of the accumulation of plant residues at the soil surface in quantities that are too large for microorganisms to metabolize fully, thus, resulting in less aromatic or less hurnified humic substances. In deeper soil layers, the input of residues was lower and further decomposition of humic substances by microorganisms continued, and the aromaticity and degree of humification increased with soil depth. This data indicates that the gradient of humification of OM in the NT soil was similar to those observed in natural soils. Nevertheless, the degree of humification of the OM in the soils under no-till management varied less than that corresponding to non-cultivated soils. This may be because the former have been managed under these practices for only 5 years, in contrast to the continuous humification process occurring in the natural soils. on the other band, LIF spectroscopic analysis of the CT soils showed less pronounced changes or no change in the degree of humification with depth. This indicates that the ploughing and harrowing involved in CT lead to homogenization of the soil and thereby also of the degree of humification of OM throughout the profile. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Stopping the increase of atmospheric CO2 level is an important task and information on how to implement adjustments on tillage practices could help lower Soil CO2 emissions would be helpful. We describe how rotary tiller use on a red latosol affected Soil CO2 efflux. The impact of changing blade rotation speed and rear shield position on soil CO2 efflux was investigated. Significant differences among treatments were observed up to 10 days after tillage. Cumulative CO2 efflux was as much as 40% greater when blade rotation of 216 rpm and a lowered rear shield was compared to blade rotation of 122 rpm and raised shield. This preliminary work suggests that adjusting rotary tiller settings could help reduce CO2 efflux close to that of undisturbed soil, thereby helping to conserve soil carbon in tropical environments. Aim. The aim of the present study was to investigate the validity of the Lactate Minimum Test (LMT) for the determination of peak VO2 on a cycle ergometer and to determine the submaximal oxygen uptake (VO2) and pulmonary ventilation (VE) responses in an incremental exercise test when it is preceded by high intensity exercise (i.e., during a LMT).Methods. Ten trained male athletes (triathletes and cyclists) performed 2 exercise tests in random order on an electromagnetic cycle ergometer: 1) Control Test (CT): an incremental test with an initial work rate of 100 W, and with 25 W increments at 3-min intervals, until voluntary exhaustion; 2) LMT: an incremental test identical to the CT, except that it was preceded by 2 supramaximal bouts of 30-sec (similar to120% VO(2)peak) with a 30-sec rest to induce lactic acidosis. This test started 8 min after the induction of acidosis.Results. There was no significant difference in peak VO2 (65.6+/-7.4 ml.kg(-1).min(-1); 63.8+/-7.5 ml.kg(-1).min(-1) to CT and LMT, respectively). However, the maximal power output (POmax) reached was significantly higher in CT (300.6+/-15.7 W) than in the LMT (283.2+/-16.0 W).VO2 and VE were significantly increased at initial power outputs in LMT.Conclusion. Although the LMT alters the submaximal physiological responses during the incremental phase (greater initial metabolic cost), this protocol is valid to evaluate peak VO2, although the POmax reached is also reduced.

The impact of tillage systems on soil CO2 emission is a complex issue as different soil types are managed in various ways, from no-till to intensive land preparation. In southern Brazil, the adoption of a new management option has arisen most recently, with no-tillage as well as no burning of crops residues left on soil surface after harvesting, especially in sugar cane areas. Although such practice has helped to restore soil carbon, the tillage impact on soil carbon loss in such areas has not been widely investigated. This study evaluated the effect of moldboard plowing followed by offset disk harrow and chisel plowing on clay oxisolCO(2) emission in a sugar cane field treated with no-tillage and high crop residues input in the last 6 years. Emissions after tillage were compared to undisturbed soil CO2 emissions during a 4-week period by using an LI-6400 system coupled to a portable soil chamber. Conventional tillage caused the highest emission during almost the whole period studied, except for the efflux immediately following tillage, when the reduced plot produced the highest peak. The lowest emissions were recorded 7 days after tillage, at the end of a dry period, when soil moisture reached its lowest rate. A linear regression between Soil CO2 effluxes and soil moisture in the no-till and conventional plots corroborate the fact that moisture, and not soil temperature, was a controlling factor. Total soil CO2 loss was huge and indicates that the adoption of reduced tillage would considerably decrease soil carbon dioxide emission in our region, particularly during the summer season and when growers leave large amounts of crop residues on the soil surface. Although it is known that crop residues are important for restoring soil carbon, our result indicates that an amount equivalent to approximately 30% of annual crop carbon residues could be transferred to the atmosphere, in a period of 4 weeks only, when conventional tillage is applied on no-tilled soils. This study analyzed the influence of recovery phase manipulation after hyperlactemia induction on the lactate minimum intensity during treadmill running. Twelve male runners (24.6 +/- A 6.3 years; 172 +/- A 8.0 cm and 62.6 +/- A 6.1 kg) performed three lactate minimum tests involving passive (LMT(P)) and active recoveries at 30%vVO(2max) (LMT(A30)) and 50%vVO(2max) (LMT(A50)) in the 8-min period following initial sprints. During subsequent graded exercise, lactate minimum speed and VO(2) in LMT(A50) (12.8 +/- A 1.5 km h(-1) and 40.3 +/- A 5.1 ml kg(-1) min(-1)) were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those in LMT(A30) (13.3 +/- A 1.6 km h(-1) and 42.9 +/- A 5.3 ml kg(-1) min(-1)) and LMT(P) (13.8 +/- A 1.6 km h(-1) and 43.6 +/- A 6.1 ml kg(-1) min(-1)). In addition, lactate minimum speed in LMT(A30) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that in LMT(P). These results suggest that lactate minimum intensity is lowered by active recovery after hyperlactemia induction in an intensity-dependent manner compared to passive recovery.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element in crop nutrition, which can be growth limiting or an environmental contaminant, if present in excess. Tillage practices have a direct effect on the behavior and availability of soil P. Sorption and availability of various P forms were evaluated in an incubation-fractionation study of three soils, a Typic Paleudults (CR soil) and two Cerrado Oxisols (Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo [LVA] and Latossolo Vermelho [LV]) with distinct biogeochemical characteristics and tillage management history. Phosphate and myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (mIPH) were strongly sorbed by the soils. Maximum adsorption capacities (S(max)) were 2.2-6.9, 3.3-7.8, and 1.6-19.8 mmol kg(-1) for phosphate in the 0-40 cm depths of the CR, LV, and LVA soils, respectively. For mIPH, S. were 1.2-3.7, 3.7-5.5, and 4.6-5.2 mmol kg(-1). Saturation indices reflected the long-term effect of repeated manure applications on the Paleudults and the near saturation of its P holding capacity, in contrast to the recently cultivated Cerrado soils. Tillage method appeared to have altered P retention characteristics of the near-surface zone very slightly, while increases in ligand-exchangeable (EEP;) and enzyme-labile organic P (EDTA-PHP) forms were observed in no-till Oxisols. In the Paleudults, added manure P increased bioactive P fractions and P saturation of no-till near-surface soil zone. Estimates of all bioactive P fractions using the ligand-based enzymatic assay showed it to be an effective method for assessing P availability in soil and developing sustainable P management strategies, particularly in Cerrado Oxisols that were low in organic matter while having an extensive P-fixing capacity. This research aimed to analyze the viability of the minimum quantity of lubricant (MQL) technique towards different methods of lubri-refrigeration in surface grinding of steel, considering process quality, wheel life and the viability of using cutting fluids The proposal methods were the conventional (abundant fluid flow), the minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) and the optimized method with Webster nozzle (rounded) This analysis was carried out in equal machining conditions, through the assessment of variables such as grinding force, surface roughness, G ratio (volume of removed material/volume of wheel wear), and microhardness The results showed the possibility of improvement of the grinding process Besides, there is the opportunity for production of high quality workpieces with lower costs The MQL technique showed efficiency in machining with lower depths of cut The optimized method with Webster nozzle applies the fluid in a rational way, without considerable waste Hence, the results show that industry can rationalize and optimize the application of cutting fluids, avoiding inappropriate disposal, inadequate use and consequently environment pollution

Few studies dealing with effort intensity during swimming exercise in rats have been reported in the literature. Recently, with the use of the lactate minimum test (LMT), our group estimated the minimum blood lactate (MBL) of rats during swimming exercises. This information allowed accurate evaluation of the effort intensity developed by rats during swimming exercise. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of swimming exercise sessions in below, equivalent and above intensities to MBL, on protein metabolism of rats. Adult (90 days) sedentary male Wistar rats were used in the present study. Mean values of MBL, in the present study, were obtained at blood concentration of 6.7 +/- 0.4 mmol/L with a load of 5% bw. The animals were sacrificed at rest (R) or immediately after a single swimming session (30 min) supporting loads below (3.5% bw), equivalent (5.0% bw) and high load (6.5% bw) to AT. Blood samples were collected each 5 min of exercise for lactate determination. Soleus muscle protein synthesis (amount of L-[C-14] fenil alanyn incorporation to protein) and breakdown (tyrosin release) rates were evaluated. Blood lactate concentrations (mmol/L) stabilized with the below (5.4 +/- 0.01) and equivalent (6.4 +/- 0.006) to MBL but increased, progressively, with the high load. There were no differences in protein synthesis (pmol/mg.h) among rest values (65.2 +/- 3.4) and after-exercise supporting the loads below (61.5 +/- 1.3) and the equivalent (60.7+/-1.7) to MBL but there was a decrease with the high load (36.6+/-2.0). Protein breakdown rates (pmol/g.h) increase after exercise supporting the loads below (227.0 +/- 6.1), equivalent (227.9 +/- 6.0) and high (363.6 +/- 7.1) to MBL in relation to the rest (214.3 +/- 6.0). The results indicate the viability of the application of LMT in studies with rats since it detected alterations imposed by exercise.

β-Adrenoreceptor blockade is reported to impair endurance, power output and work capacity in healthy subjects and patients with hypertension. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect in eighth athletic males of an acute β-adrenergic blockade with propranolol on their individual power output corresponding to a defined lactate minimum (LM). Eight fit males (cyclist or triathlete) performed a protocol to determine the power output corresponding to their individual LM (defined from an incremental exercise test after a rapidly induced exercise lactic acidosis). This protocol was performed twice in a double-blind randomized order by each athlete first ingesting propranolol (80mg) and in a second trial a placebo, 120 minutes respectively prior to the test sequence. The blood lactate concentration obtained 7 minutes after anaerobic exercise (a Wingate test) was significantly lower after acute β-adrenergic blockade (8.6 ± 1.6mM) than under the placebo condition (11.7 ± 1.6mM). The work rate at the LM was lowered from 215.0 ± 18.6 to 184.0 ± 18.6 watts and heart rate at the LM was reduced from 165 ± 1.5 to 132 ± 2.2 beats/minute as a result of the blockade. There was a non-significant correlation (r = 0.29) between the power output at the LM with and without acute β-adrenergic blockade. In conclusion, since the intensity corresponding to the LM is related to aerobic performance, the results of the present study, are able to explain in part, the reduction in aerobic power output produced during β-adrenergic blockade.
