This paper reviews advances in the technology of integrated semiconductor optical amplifier based photonic switch fabrics, with particular emphasis on their suitability for high performance network switches for use within a datacenter. The key requirements for large port count optical switch fabrics are addressed noting the need for switches with substantial port counts. The design options for a 16×16 port photonic switch fabric architecture are discussed and the choice of a Clos-tree design is described. The control strategy, based on arbitration and scheduling, for an integrated switch fabric is explained. The detailed design and fabrication of the switch is followed by experimental characterization, showing net optical gain and operation at 10 Gb/s with bit error rates lower than 10-9. Finally improvements to the switch are suggested, which should result in 100 Gb/s per port operation at energy efficiencies of 3 pJ/bit. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

Ecosystem-based management is one of many indispensable components of objective, holistic management of human impacts on nonhuman systems. By itself, however, ecosystem-based management carries the same risks we face with other forms of current management; holism requires more. Combining single-species and ecosystem approaches represents progress. However, it is now recognized that management also needs to be evosystem-based. In other words, management needs to account for all coevolutionary and evolutionary interactions among all species; otherwise we fall far short of holism. Fully holistic practices are quite distinct from the approaches to the management of fisheries that are applied today. In this paper, we show how macroecological patterns can guide management consistently, objectively, and holistically. We present one particular macroecological pattern with two applications. The first application is a case study of fisheries from the Baltic Sea involving historical data for two species; the second involves a sample of 44 species of primarily marine fish worldwide. In both cases we evaluate historical fishing rates and determine holistic/systemic sustainable single-species fishing rates to illustrate that conventional fisheries management leads to much more extensive and pervasive overfishing than currently realized; harvests are, on average, over twenty-fold too large to be fully sustainable. In general, our approach involves not only the sustainability of fisheries and related resources but also the sustainability of the ecosystems and evosystems in which they occur. Using macroecological patterns accomplishes four important goals: 1) Macroecology becomes one of the interdisciplinary components of management. 2) Sustainability becomes an option for harvests from populations of individual species, species groups, ecosystems, and the entire marine environment. 3) Policies and goals are reality-based, holistic, or fully systemic; they account for ecological as well as evolutionary factors and dynamics (including management itself). 4) Numerous management questions can be addressed.

We describe a 2.5-degree gridpoint atmospheric hydrology/climatology of precipitable water, precipitation, atmospheric moisture convergence, and a residual evaporation or evapotranspiration for the coterminous United States. We also describe a large-scale surface hydrology/climatology of a residual soil moisture, streamflow divergence, or runoff, as well as precipitation and evaporation. Annual and seasonal means and interrelationships among various components of the hydrologic cycles are discussed.

Discusses a study conducted to determine the best development path for large wind turbine rotor design. Shape and number of blades, degrees of freedom allowed, and control strategy are considered. Manufacture and costs are also discussed. Two-bladed, stall-regulated, teetered rotors are more cost effective than three-bladed rotors. Single-bladed rotors can be even more cost-effective. No new manufacturing techniques are required. The most cost-effective rotor includes a hub constructed in wood/composite materials, bonded to the blades. There is strong incentive for the blade manufacturer to supply the complete rotor. (from author's abstract)

This paper discusses the problem of restoring a digital input signal that has been degraded by an unknown FIR filter in noise, using the Gibbs sampler. A method for drawing a random sample of a sequence of bits is presented; this is shown to have faster convergence than a scheme by Chen and Li, which draws bits independently. ©1998 IEEE.

The question of how amphibians can protect themselves from reactive oxygen species when exposed to the sun in an oxygen-rich atmosphere is important and interesting, not only from an evolutionary viewpoint, but also as a primer for researchers interested in mammalian skin biology, in which such peptide systems for antioxidant defense are not well studied. The identification of an antioxidant peptide named antioxidin-RL from frog (Odorrana livida) skin in this report supports the idea that a peptide antioxidant system may be a widespread antioxidant strategy among amphibian skins. Its ability to eliminate most of the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical tested within 2 s, which is much faster than the commercial antioxidant factor butylated hydroxytoluene, suggests that it has a potentially large impact on redox homeostasis in amphibian skins. Cys10 is proven to be responsible for its rapid radical scavenging function and tyrosines take part in the binding of antioxidin-RL to radicals according to our nuclear magnetic resonance assay. Computations are made for chevron and coflowing jet nozzles. The latter has a bypass ratio of 6:1. Also, unlike the chevron nozzle, the core flow is heated, making the inlet conditions reminiscent of those for a real engine. A large-eddy resolving approach is used with circa 12 × 10 6 cell meshes. Because the codes being used tend toward being dissipative the subgrid scale model is abandoned, giving what can be termed numerical large-eddy simulation. To overcome near-wall modeling problems a hybrid numerical large-eddy simulation-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes related method is used. For y + ≤ 60 a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model is used. Blending between the two regions makes use of the differential Hamilton-Jabobi equation, an extension of the eikonal equation. For both nozzles, results show encouraging agreement with measurements of other workers. The eikonal equation is also used for ray tracing to explore the effect of the mean flow on acoustic ray trajectories, thus yielding a coherent solution strategy. © 2011 by Cambridge University.

Computations are made of a short cowl coflowing jet nozzle with a bypass ratio 8 : 1. The core flow is heated, making the inlet conditions reminiscent of those for a real engine. A large eddy resolving approach is used with a 12 × 106 cell mesh. Since the code being used tends towards being dissipative the sub-grid scale (SGS) model is abandoned giving what can be termed Numerical Large Eddy Simulation (NLES). To overcome near wall modelling problems a hybrid NLES-RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) related method is used. For y+ ≤ 60 a κ-l model is used. Blending between the two regions makes use of the differential Hamilton-Jabobi (HJ) equation, an extension of the eikonal equation. Results show encouraging agreement with existing measurements of other workers. The eikonal equation is also used for acoustic ray tracing to explore the effect of the mean flow on acoustic ray trajectories, thus yielding a coherent solution strategy. Copyright © 2011 by ASME.

This paper explores platform strategies along the business ecosystem lifecycle (BELC), based on a multiple-case study. Developing observations on platform strategies from a firm level to a business ecosystem level, the study investigates the issue of platform strategy through three views, respectively technology, application and organisation. As a result, a general evolutional pattern of platform strategy along the BELC is identified, where an open strategy emerges at the birth and expansion phases, then a dominating strategy rises at the authority phase, and finally the opportunistic strategy takes over at the renewal phase. This paper connects the core firms in the business ecosystem with the evolutionary platform strategies. Copyright © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

We consider the inverse reinforcement learning problem, that is, the problem of learning from, and then predicting or mimicking a controller based on state/action data. We propose a statistical model for such data, derived from the structure of a Markov decision process. Adopting a Bayesian approach to inference, we show how latent variables of the model can be estimated, and how predictions about actions can be made, in a unified framework. A new Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler is devised for simulation from the posterior distribution. This step includes a parameter expansion step, which is shown to be essential for good convergence properties of the MCMC sampler. As an illustration, the method is applied to learning a human controller.

A partially observable Markov decision process has been proposed as a dialogue model that enables robustness to speech recognition errors and automatic policy optimisation using reinforcement learning (RL). However, conventional RL algorithms require a very large number of dialogues, necessitating a user simulator. Recently, Gaussian processes have been shown to substantially speed up the optimisation, making it possible to learn directly from interaction with human users. However, early studies have been limited to very low dimensional spaces and the learning has exhibited convergence problems. Here we investigate learning from human interaction using the Bayesian Update of Dialogue State system. This dynamic Bayesian network based system has an optimisation space covering more than one hundred features, allowing a wide range of behaviours to be learned. Using an improved policy model and a more robust reward function, we show that stable learning can be achieved that significantly outperforms a simulator trained policy. © 2013 IEEE.
