The octagon, the hendecagon and the approximation of pi: the geometric design of the clypeus in the enclosure of Imperial cult in Tarraco

The ancient temple dedicated to the Roman Emperor Augustus on the hilltop of Tarraco (today’s Tarragona), was the main element of the sacred precinct of the Imperial cult. It was a two hectare square, bordered by a portico with an attic decorated with a sequence of clypeus (i.e. monumental shields) made with marble plates from the Luni-Carrara’s quarries. This contribution presents the results of the analysis of a three-dimensional photogrammetric survey of one of these clipeus, partially restored and exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona. The perimeter ring was bounded by a sequence of meanders inscribed in a polygon of 11 sides, a hendecagon. Moreover, a closer geometric analysis suggests that the relationship between the outer meander rim and the oval pearl ring that delimited the divinity of Jupiter Ammon can be accurately determined by the diagonals of an octagon inscribed in the perimeter of the clypeus. This double evidence suggests a combined layout, in the same design, of an octagon and a hendecagon. Hypothetically, this could be achieved by combining the octagon with the approximation to Pi used in antiquity: 22/7 of the circle’s diameter. This method allows the drawing of a hendecagon with a clearly higher precision than with other ancient methods. Even the modelling of the motifs that separate the different decorative stripes corroborates the geometric scheme that we propose.

The manufacture of glass-ceramics is an alternative route for the commercial use of metallurgical slags. Such types of glass-ceramics may find commercial applications owing to their low cost, good mechanical properties and superior visual aspect. Besides, due to the elimination of that industrial residue from the environment and also due to the possibility of replacement of natural stones such as marbles and granites, the use of slags is an activity with strong ecological appeal. While the use of blast-furnace slags for the production of glass-ceramics is well known, the utilization of steel making slags constitutes a challenge, because these materials possess low concentration of SiO2. In this work a novel composition for producing glasses and glass-ceramics from a steelmaking slag is presented. The crystal nucleation kinetics, the characterization of the resulting microstructures for two different thermal treatments and mechanical properties of the glass-ceramics are discussed. A glass-ceramic having a marble aspect, fine volumetric crystallization, high degree of crystallization and improved mechanical strength was obtained.

Pere Compte, mestre major de l'obra de la Seu de Tortosa.

[cat] En aquest article es documenta Pere Compte com a mestre major de la Seu de Tortosa(1490), fet que es relaciona amb la promoció del protonotari apostòlic Joan Girona i es compara amb la direcció de les obres de Pere Moragues, que tingué lloc un segle abans. D'altra banda, es proposa la hipòtesi que sigui Pere Compte el responsable del disseny de la capella del Roser de l'esmentat edifici. També s'apunta la possibilitat que fos Antoni Queralt el mestre encarregat de dirigir el dia a dia de l'obra mentre Compte n'era absent i es posa de manifest la importancia que va poder tenir aquest mestre, especialment a Tortosa i a Lleida, a l'entorn del 1500. Finalment, es dóna notícia de la presencia d'altres mestres importants a la Tortosa del canvi de segles paral·lelament a la de Compte i Queralt al front de les obres de la Seu.

Se trata de una propuesta como resultado del trabajo conjunto entre la escuela de Arte Pigment y el ESPAI ZERO1 del Museu Comarcal de la Garrotxa, destinado exclusivamente a exposiciones temporales de creación contemporánea y como continuidad de propuestas anteriores de colaboración: REPLICA23 y SONESNAT JUNIOR. Com si fos possible recollir el sofriment es un proyecto de la artista Anna Manel.la, y se consideró una propuesta interesante y un reto para conversar, intercambiar y crear con los alumnos sobre el tema de la exposición: la muerte y el sufrimiento. Asimismo porque es una artista conocida por los alumnos de la escuela Pigment, ya que anteriormente habían realizado un proyecto de apadrinamiento de esculturas y habitualmente ella participa en programas divulgativos en la escuela. El trabajo desarrollado centra el aprendizaje en la creación y en la investigación artística como ejes de los procesos de conceptualización con el objetivo de atender las dinámicas y los estímulos característicos de los niños. Facilitando procesos de búsqueda, exploración y manipulación sin condicionantes y promoviendo procesos autónomos en los que los mismos niños se planteen dudas e interrogantes y se enfrenten a situaciones cada vez mas complejas

Caracterização através de análise química da escultura portuguesa sobre madeira de produção erudita e de produção popular da época barroca

Making use of several analytical techniques, four erudite and four popular Portuguese baroque wooden sculptures were studied. The materials and techniques employed were identified and the relationship between their artistic quality and the materials used was investigated. In general, the pigments were common at the time, but one pigment discovered in the beginning of the 18th century and two rare arsenic pigments were also identified. In popular sculptures cost-saving was detected, particularly concerning the gold leaf. Regarding some technical procedures identified, recommendations found in historical documents did not seem to have been entirely followed, neither in erudite nor in popular sculptures.

1er juillet [1861] : Promet un article sur la distribution des récompenses des Salons et des Concours où il rappellera le nom et les oeuvres de Gustave Doré dont il a "le talent en grande estime" : "Le concours de sculpture a été très fort ; le nombre de médailles est trop restreint, et les Grands Prix de Rome toujours favorisés". Evoque aussi le nom de Charles Garnier : "Le "Sujet d'Opéra" de Garnier a obtenu la première médaille d'architecture. Décision tout exceptionnelle et très flatteuse car l'oeuvre ne faisait point partie, à proprement parler, de l'Exposition d'Architecture" (NLAS-212-1). - Février 1865 : Réclame un droit de réponse à un article de Blaze de Bury paru dans le "Ménestrel". La lettre contient également la réponse de Heugel datée du 3 février 1865 dans laquelle l'éditeur lui demande d'adoucir ses propos (NLAS-212-9). - 30 juillet 1866 : Echanges et négociations au sujet de la publication de "Tobie" de Fromental Halévy. Est vexé que l'éditeur ne voie pas dans cette parution une bonne affaire et rappelle qu'il a donné au "Ménestrel" "à titre purement gratuit" un travail important sur l'oeuvre de son frère, alors que tant d'autres collègues sont très bien payés pour fournir des notices sur des compositeurs auxquelles il reproche "un esprit de dénigrement à l'égard de [s]on cher frère". Tente de rendre justice à son frère : "Je ne puis cependant m'empêcher de remarquer, quand j'entre chez vous, qu'à côté des bustes ou portraits de Meyerbeer, de Rossini, d'Auber, qui décorent vos magasins, je ne vois pas une seule image du grand maître qui fut leur égal" (NLAS-212-11). - 2 août 1866 : Le remercie pour le témoignage personnel de ses sentiments à l'égard de son "cher et regretté frère" : "cette justice que vous lui avez toujours rendue me dédommage amplement des torts que peuvent avoir envers sa mémoire plusieurs écrivains qui ont coopéré avec moi au monument que vous élevez à la gloire de nos grands maîtres français et étrangers" (NLAS-212-12). - 25 avril 1867 : au sujet des droits d'auteur de "Tobie" (NLAS-212-16). - 7 mai 1873 : Se dit heureux que son article convienne au directeur du "Ménestrel". Évoque "Carmen" de Bizet : "Ludovic [Halévy] et Meilhac sont à l'oeuvre et achèvent un poème où l'ami Bizet aura toute occasion de déployer son talent" (NLAS-212-17). - 16 juin 1875 : Le remercie pour son article consacré à "[leur] cher et infortuné Bizet" : "Impossible de rendre un hommage plus complet et en meilleurs termes à une existence si courte et si bien remplie" (NLAS-212-19). - 22 juin 1875 : Au sujet d'un opéra inachevé de Bizet, "Le Cid" : "La seule personne qui pourrait vous donner des renseignements que vous désirez sur l'opéra laissé inachevé par Bizet [...] serait sa jeune et malheureuse veuve, ma pauvre nièce Geneviève, mais elle est dans un tel état de prostration, d'accablement et d'inconsolable affliction qu'il est encore impossible de l'interroger sur un sujet si douloureux pour elle et qui raviverait de si poignants souvenirs" (NLAS-212-20). - Contient aussi 2 LAS de sa belle-soeur Léonie Halévy au sujet de sa fondation "Le Pain à bon marché" (NLAS-212-22/23)

Sir Isaac Brock Facial Reconstruction Project, n.d.

Christian Cardell Corbet, a descendant of Guernsey, Channel Islands, was born in 1966 at Pickering Beach on Lake Ontario. He developed his talents as a landscape artist and at the young age of 14 he began his informal education in commercial signage from his paternal grandfather. He studied at the University of Guelph and McMaster University Anatomy Laboratory. Corbet traveled to England where he began to experiment more in abstraction and non-objective work. In 1995, he presented a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at Clarence House. This brought his career to an international level. He also creates two-dimensional works and has received acclaim for his bronze art medallions. He has gained international recognition as a Forensic Artist working as Artist in Residence for the University of Western Ontario. He does facial reconstructions for special assignments. These original drawings relate to a sculpted medallion of Brock which was authorized by Sir Geoffrey Rowland, Bailiff, Guernsey, Channel Islands and Minister of Education of the States of Guernsey. This is the first time in known recorded history that a forensic analysis and sculpture has been created to accurately depict the facial likeness of Sir Isaac Brock. This project has been established to mark the 2012 anniversary of the death of Brock.

Letter - A. Monro Grier to W.B. Rankine, 20 March 1902

A letter from A. M. Grier to W.B. Rankine referencing the purchase of granite for the "Tunnel Portal Lining". Grier discusses the purchase of granite with MacIntosh Granite and Marble Company for Stanstead Granite. Grier also discusses a wire sent to a Mr. Brock in regards to the purchase and supply of granite for the project.
