Poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) formed films from aqueous formulations with characteristics that are ideal as a basis for producing a drug-containing bioadhesive delivery system when plasticized with a monohydroxyl functionalized plasticizer. Hence, films containing a novel plasticizer, tripropylene glycol methyl ether (TPME), maintained their adhesive strength and tensile properties when packaged in aluminized foil for extended periods of time. Films plasticized with commonly used polyhydric alcohols, such as the glycerol in this study, underwent an esterification reaction that led to polymer crosslinking, as shown in NMR studies. These revealed the presence of peaks in the ester/carbonyl region, suggesting that glyceride residue formation had been initiated. Given the polyfunctional nature of glycerol, progressive esterification would result in a polyester network and an accompanying profound alteration in the physical characteristics. Indeed, films became brittle over time with a loss of both the aqueous solubility and bioadhesion to porcine skin. In addition, a swelling index was measurable after 7 days, a property not seen with those films containing TPME. This change in bioadhesive strength and pliability was independent of the packaging conditions, rendering the films that contain glycerol as unsuitable as a basis for topical bioadhesive delivery of drug substances. Consequently, films containing TPME have potential as an alternative formulation strategy.

Factors that control the competition between toluene dioxgenase-catalysed arene cis-dihydroxylation and dehydrogenase-catalysed ketone reduction have been studied, using whole cells of Pseudomonas putida UV and three alkylaryl ketones. The triol metabolite, obtained from 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone, has been used in the synthesis of single enantiomer chiral phenols and benzylic alcohols. Potential applications of the methylether derivatives of the chiral phenols and benzylic alcohols, as resolving agents, have been found. (c) 2007 Society of Chemical Industry.

Tubers of five cultivars of potato were stored at 4 degreesC for 2 3 and 8 months and baked in a conventional oven The flavor compounds from the baked potato flesh were isolated by headspace adsorption onto Tenax and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry On a quantitative basis compounds derived from lipid and Maillard reaction/sugar degradation dominated the flavor isolates with sulfur compounds, methoxypyrazines, and terpenes making smaller contributions Levels of 37 of the > 150 detected compounds were monitored in each cultivar with time of storage Many significant differences were found in levels of individual compounds compound classes and total monitored compounds for the individual effects of cultivar and storage time and for their two way interaction Differences may be explained by variations in levels of flavor precursors and activities of enzymes mediating flavor compound formation among cultivars and storage times In addition differences in agronomic conditions may partly account for variations among cultivars Overall of the compounds monitored those most likely having the greatest flavor impact were 2-isopropyl 3 methyoxypyrazine 2 isobutyl 3-methoxypyrazine dimethyl trisulfide, decanal and 3 methylbutanal, with methylpropanal, 2 methylbutanal methional, and nonanal also being probable important contributors to flavor.

Tubers of eleven cultivars of potato were baked and the flavour compounds from the flesh were isolated by headspace adsorption onto Tenax and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Lipid degradation and the Maillard reaction were the main sources of flavour compounds, accounting for 22-69% and 28-77%, respectively, of the total yields. Various sulfur compounds, methoxypyrazines and terpenes were also identified at lower levels. Relative aroma impact values (RAVs) were calculated by dividing compound yields by the odour threshold value. Compounds contributing most to aroma (RAV > 10000 in at least one cultivar) were 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine, 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine, beta -damascenone, dimethyl trisulfide, decanal and 3-methylbutanal. The observed differences in yields and RAVs for compounds among cultivars would be expected to result in differences in perceived flavour.

Heating 2,5-di-O-methanesulfonyl-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol (1) in a range of solvents led to the formation of a gel state at low concentrations. 1 was found to gel aromatics, alcohols and water. The structure of 1 in the solid state was solved by single crystal X-ray crystallography; no strong hydrogen bonds or associated solvents were found in the crystal. Electron micrographs revealed the morphology of the gels to be predominantly rod-like. The ethanol alcogel was used to template silica by sol-gel transcription.

A Ru/SiO2 catalyst was investigated for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of butan-2-one to butan-2-ol with water as a medium. Although excellent reactivity was observed, a gradual deactivation of the catalyst was found on recycle of the catalyst. The spent catalyst was characterized by using XRD, XPS, TEM, TPR, CO chemisorption, FTIR and ICP analyses. Formation of Ru(OH)(x) surface species is proposed to be the main cause of catalyst deactivation with no significant Ru leaching into the reaction mixture. Following catalyst regeneration, up to 85% of the initial catalytic activity could be recovered successfully. Moreover, adsorption of secondary aliphatic alcohols on the catalyst was found to significantly reduce the formation of Ru(OH)(x) during the reaction, thus protecting the catalyst from deactivation.

A series of nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids were found to exhibit temperature-dependent miscibility (thermomorphism) with the lower alcohols. Their coordinating abilities toward cobalt(II) ions were investigated through the dissolution process of cobalt(II) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and were found to depend on the donor abilities of the nitrile group. The crystal structures of the cobalt(II) solvates [Co(C1C1CNPyr)2(Tf2N)4] and [Co(C1C2CNPyr)6][Tf2N]8, which were isolated from ionic-liquid solutions, gave an insight into the coordination chemistry of functionalized ionic liquids. Smooth layers of cobalt metal could be obtained by electrodeposition of the cobalt-containing ionic liquids.

A series of enantiopure 2,2'-bipyridines have been synthesised from the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites of 2-chloroquinolines. Several of the resulting hydroxylated 2,2'-bipyridines were found to be useful chiral ligands for the asymmetric aminolysis of meso-epoxides leading to the formation of enantioenriched amino alcohols (-> 84%ee). N-oxide and N,N'-dioxide derivatives of these 2,2'-bipyridines, including separable atropisomers, have been synthesised and used as enantioselective organocatalysts in the asymmetric allylation of aldehydes to give allylic alcohols (-> 86%ee).

A new method of sol-gel polymer template synthesis of mesoporous catalytic thin films has been proposed which allows controlling the chemical nature of the film, the porosity, thickness and loading with an active species. The mesoporous films with a long-order structure can be obtained in a narrow range of surfactant-to-metal precursor molar ratios from 0.006 to 0.009. The catalytic film thickness was varied from 300 to 1000 nm while providing a uniform catalyst distribution with a desired catalyst loading (1 wt. % Au nanoparticles) throughout the film. The films were characterized by TEM, SEM, ethanol adsorption and contact angle measurements. The calcination of the as-synthesized films at 573 K reduced Ti4+ sites to Ti3+. A 300 nm thick Au-containing film showed an initial TOF of 1.4 s(-1) and a selectivity towards unsaturated alcohols as high as 90% in the hydrogenation of citral. Thicker films demonstrated a high selectivity towards the saturated aldehyde (above 55%) and a lower intrinsic catalytic activity (initial TOF of 0.7-0.9 s(-1)) in the absence of internal diffusion limitations.

The kinetics of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal) on Au/TiO2 and Pt-Sn/TiO2 thin films was studied in the temperature range 313-353 K and citral concentrations of 0.25-10.0 mol m(-3). The thin films were deposited onto the inner walls of silica capillaries with internal diameter of 250 mu m. First-order dependence on hydrogen pressure and near zero order dependence on citral concentration were observed for the initial rate of citral hydrogenation over the Pt-Sn/TiO2 and Au/TiO2 thin films. The Au/TiO2 catalyst prevents citronellal formation. The highest yield of unsaturated alcohols was obtained on the Pt-Sn/TiO2 film at a reaction temperature of 343 K, liquid residence time of 30 min and a citral conversion of 99%. Densities ([rho]) and viscosities ([eta]) of binary mixtures containing the Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL), pyrrolidinium octanoate with five molecular solvents: water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, and acetonitrile are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature and within the whole composition range. The refractive index of all mixtures (nD) is measured at 298.15†K. The excess molar volumes VE and deviation from additivity rules of viscosities [eta]E and refractive index [Delta][phi]n, of pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions were then deduced from the experimental results as well as apparent molar volumes V[phi]i, partial molar volumes and thermal expansion coefficients [alpha]p. The excess molar volumes VE are negative over the entire mole fraction range for mixture with water, acetonitrile, and methanol indicating strong hydrogen-bonding interaction for the entire mole fraction. In the case of longest carbon chain alcohols (such as ethanol and n-butanol)†+†pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions, the VE variation as a function of the composition describes an S shape. The deviation from additivity rules of viscosities is negative over the entire composition range for the acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, and butanol, and becomes less negative with increasing temperature. Whereas, [eta]E of the {[Pyrr][C7CO2]†+†water} binary mixtures is positive in the whole mole fraction range and decreases with increasing temperature. the excess Gibbs free energies of activation of viscous flow ([Delta]G*E) for these systems were calculated. The deviation from additivity rules of refractive index [Delta][phi]n are positive over the whole composition range and approach a maximum of 0.25 in PIL mole fraction for all systems. The magnitude of deviation for [Delta][phi]n describes the following order: water†>†methanol†>†acetonitrile†>†ethanol. Results have been discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in these binary mixtures.

A one-pot sol-gel synthesis method has been developed for the incorporation of metal nanoparticles into mesoporous oxide thin films deposited on various plane substrates by spin-coating and on the inner surface of fused silica capillaries by dip-coating. The size, the metal loading and the stoichiometry of the metal nanoparticles could be precisely controlled by following this methodology. In the first step, polymer stabilized Pt50Sn50 and Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles were obtained by a solvent-reduction method. Then, the nanoparticles were added to a metal oxide precursor sol, which was destabilized by solvent evaporation. After calcination, the obtained materials were tested in the hydrogenation of citral in both batch and continuous modes. The highest selectivity of 30% towards the unsaturated alcohols was obtained over supported Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles with a preferential formation of the cis-isomer (nerol) due to a unique confinement of the bimetallic nanoparticles in the mesoporous framework. The selectivity towards the unsaturated alcohols was further improved to 56% over the PtRu5Sn nanoparticles supported by impregnation onto mesoporous silica films. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Experimental data are presented for liquid-liquid equilibria of mixtures of the room-temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2MIM][NTf2]) with the three alcohols propan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, and pentan-1-ol and for the 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([C4MIM][NTf2]) with cyclohexanol and 1,2-hexanediol in the temperature range of 275 K to 345 K at ambient pressure. The synthetic method has been used. Cloud points at a given composition were observed by varying the temperature and using light scattering to detect the phase splitting. In addition, the influence of small amounts of water on the demixing temperatures of binary mixtures of [C2MIM][NTf2] and propan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, and pentan-1-ol was investigated.

The cidal activities of aqueous taurolidine (2.0% w/v containing 5.0% wlv polyvinylpyrrolidone as a solubilising agent) and alcoholic taurolidine (2.0% w/v dissolved in Isopropyl alcohol 50% v/v) against spores of Bacillus subtilis NCTC 10073 were evaluated at 20 degrees C, 37 degrees C, 45 degrees C and 55 degrees C. Increased temperature increased both the rate and extent of sporicidal activity of both solutions. Total spore kill was not observed in either solution type over the range of temperatures and contact times examined. There were no observed differences between the sporicidal activities of aqueous and alcoholic taurolidine solutions at all temperatures examined. Ultrasonic energy (50 Hz operating frequency in a 150 W ultrasonic bath in conjunction with increasing temperature allowed to rise naturally from ambient temperature to 41 degrees C over 4 h) enhanced the sporicidal activities of both solution types. However, the difference in activity between the two solution types was not significant. Compared to normal spores, alteration of spore coat layers (hydrogen-form spores) did not alter spore susceptibility to aqueous taurolidine at elevated temperatures of 37 degrees C and 55 degrees C.

A linear cation-decorated polymeric support with tuneable surface properties and microstructure has been prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP) of a pyrrolidinium-functionalised norbornene-based monomer with cyclooctene. The derived peroxophosphotungstate-based polymer-immobilised ionic liquid phase (PIILP) catalyst is an efficient and recyclable system for the epoxidation of allylic alcohols and alkenes, with only a minor reduction in performance on successive cycles.
