The track of the cruise, and the location of the different stations cover a large range of water masses, many of which take part in the exchange across the Greenland-Scotland Ridge, and of importance for the biogeochemical fluxes in the region. These water masses are of very different origins, which can be observed in the concentration of the different biogeochemical parameters. The concentrations are a result of the combination of the physical and biogeochemical environment in each formation region, and the processes acting on the water masses as they are transported away from the formation areas. The aim of the biogeochemistry measurements was to achieve a better understanding of the strength and variability of the biological carbon pump in the North Atlantic and Nordic Seas.

Laboratory experiments show that undercooling to about -5°C occurs in colonized Beacon sandstones of the Ross Desert, Antarctica. High-frequency temperature oscillations between 5°C and -5°C or -10°C (which occur in nature on the rock surface) did not damage Hemichloris antarctica. In a cryomicroscope, H. antarctica appeared to be undamaged after slow or rapid cooling to -50°C. l4CO2 incorporation after freezing to -20°C was unaffected in H. antarctica or in Trebouxia sp. but slightly depressed in Stichococcus sp. (isolated from a less extreme Antarctic habitat). These results suggest that the freezing regime in the Antarctic desert is not injurious to endolithic algae. It is likely that the freezing-point depression inside the rock makes available liquid water for metabolic activity at subzero temperatures. Freezing may occur more frequently on the rock surface and contribute to the abiotic nature of the surface.

The present study investigated the effects of ocean acidification and temperature increase on Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral), the dominant planktonic foraminifer in the Arctic Ocean. Due to the naturally low concentration of [CO3] 2- in the Arctic, this foraminifer could be particularly sensitive to the forecast changes in seawater carbonate chemistry. To assess potential responses to ocean acidification and climate change, perturbation experiments were performed on juvenile and adult specimens by manipulating seawater to mimic the present-day carbon dioxide level and a future ocean acidification scenario (end of the century) under controlled (in situ) and elevated temperatures (1 and 4 °C, respectively). Foraminifera mortality was unaffected under all the different experiment treatments. Under low pH, N. pachyderma (s) shell net calcification rates decreased. This decrease was higher (30 %) in the juvenile specimens than decrease observed in the adults (21 %) ones. However, decrease in net calcification was moderated when both, pH decreased and temperature increased simultaneously. When only temperature increased, a net calcification rate for both life stages was not affected. These results show that forecast changes in seawater chemistry would impact calcite production in N. pachyderma (s), possibly leading to a reduction of calcite flux contribution and consequently a decrease in biologic pump efficiency.

The eight-year record of mass balance of Peyto Glacier is correlated to meteorological data measured near the glacier and at Lake Louise 30 km to the south. The period investigated includes the llighest and lowest accumulations for the past 40 years. The primar'y controls of net annual balance are seen to be the depth of the 'winter sno,y pack and the temperature record during the summer. Extensive summer snowfalls in the ablation area can slow down melt rates very considerably and affect the net annual balance positively. The variable nature of winter accumulation and its influence on snowline retreat and ice melt is illustrated by three years' data.
