The reaction of an aqueous solution of poly(ethylene oxide) (peo - mw 100.000) with a neutral aqueous suspension of single layers of MoS2 was studied. The single layers aqueous suspension was prepared by first intercalating lithium (using n-Butyllithium in n-hexane) and reaction of these ternary compound with water under ultrasound stirring. The suspension was washed several times with water until neutral pH. The suspension was mixed with the PEO aqueous solution in the presence of KCl. Two single phase compounds were obtained with the expansion of 4,8 and 9,0Å, attributed to the solvation of the intercalated potassium cations with mono and double layers, respectively.

Herein is reported the design and synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives of Lamellarin D with the aim of modulating their physicochemical properties, and improving the biological activity. Mono-, di- and tri-PEG conjugates with improved solubility were obtained in 18-57% overall yields from the corresponding partially protected phenolic derivatives of Lamellarin D. Conjugates 1-9 were tested in a panel of three human tumor cell lines (MDA-MB-231 breast, A-549 lung and HT-29 colon) to evaluate their cytotoxicity. Several compounds exhibited enhanced cellular internalization, and more than 85% of the derivatives showed a lower GI50 than Lam-D. Furthermore, cell cycle arrest at G2 phase, and apoptotic cell-death pathways were determined for Lamellarin D and these derivatives.

The design and synthesis of Lamellarin D conjugates with a nuclear localization signal peptide and a poly(ethylene glycol)-based dendrimer are described. Conjugates 1-4 were obtained in 8-84% overall yields from the corresponding protected Lamellarin D. Conjugates 1 and 4 are 1.4 to 3.3-fold more cytotoxic than the parent compound against three human tumor cell lines(MDA-MB-231 breast, A-549 lung, and HT-29 colon). Besides, conjugates 3, 4 showed a decrease in activity potency in BJ skin fibroblasts, a normal cell culture. Cellular internalization was analyzed and nuclear distribution pattern was observed for 4, which contains a nuclear localization signalling sequence.

In this work, it was studied the behavior of the nonionic surfactant aqueous solutions, containing or not a hydrotropic agent, by resonance magnetic nuclear (NMR). We have studied monofunctional diblock copolymers of poly(propylene oxide-ethylene oxide) (R-PPO-PEO-OH, where R length is linear C4) as nonionic surfactant and sodium p-toluenesulfonate (NaPTS) as hydrotropic agent. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the aqueous copolymer solution was obtained from ¹H-NMR. The preliminary study of the interaction between the copolymer, under the unimer and micelle forms, and the hydrotrope, in aqueous solutions, was evaluated by ¹H-NMR and 13C-NMR.

An alternative analytical method for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in atmosphere was developed. The collection of NO2 is performed by a Sep-Pack C-18 cartridge impregnated with 11% (v/v) of triethanolamine plus 3,6 % (v/v) of ethylene glycol plus 25 % (v/v) of acetone combined solution. When the impregnating is used, NO2 is collected with good repeatibility (CV = 3,3 %). The NO2 absorbed in the sampler was stripped from the sorbent with a methanol 5% (v/v) aqueous solution and was determined by colorimetry as nitrite by using the Griess-Saltzman reagent. The detection limit of 1,4 ppb for 60 min sampling at 0,5 L min-1 flow rate was obtained. Preparation and conditioning procedures for TEA-C-18 cartridge, sampling flow rate, absorption capacity and interference of other species are discussed.

In this work we report the synthesis of some organolanthanide compounds which were identified as LnCl2Cp(PzA)2, Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu and Tb, Cp = cyclopentadienyl and PzA = pirazinamide, by elemental analyses, complexometric titration with EDTA, thermal analyses and IR spectra. Thermal analysis and infrared spectra indicated that the coordination of the pyrazinamide to the lanthanide ions was made by the O atom of the carbonyl group and by one or both N atoms of the pyrazinamide ring. This class of compound showed catalytic activity of ca. 4.0 to 6.4 kgPE molLn-1 h-1 bar-1, in ethylene polymerization, using methylaluminoxane as cocatalyst. The resulting polyethylene presented low crystallinity (20%).

The conversion of glycerol in supercritical water (SCW) was studied at 510-550 °C and a pressure of 350 bars using both a bed of inert and non-porous ZrO2 particles (hydrothermal experiments), and a bed of a 1% Ru/ZrO2 catalyst. Experiments were conducted with a glycerol concentration of 5 wt% in a continuous isothermal fixed-bed reactor at a residence time between 2 and 10 s. Hydrothermolysis of glycerol formed water-soluble products such as acetaldehyde, acetic acid, hydroxyacetone and acrolein, and gases like H2, CO and CO2. The catalyst enhanced the formation of acetic acid, inhibited the formation of acrolein, and promoted gasification of the glycerol decomposition products. Hydrogen and carbon oxides were the main gases produced in the catalytic experiments, with minor amounts of methane and ethylene. Complete glycerol conversion was achieved at a residence time of 8.5 s at 510 °C, and at around 5 s at 550 °C with the 1 wt% Ru/ZrO2 catalyst. The catalyst was not active enough to achieve complete gasification since high yields of primary products like acetic acid and acetaldehyde were still present. Carbon balances were between 80 and 60% in the catalytic experiments, decreasing continuously as the residence time was increased. This was attributed partially to the formation of methanol and acetaldehyde, which were not recovered and analyzed efficiently in our set-up, but also to the formation of carbon deposits. Carbon deposition was not observed on the catalyst particles but on the surface of the inert zirconia particles, especially at high residence time. This was related to the higher concentration of acetic acid and other acidic species in the catalytic experiments, which may polymerize to form tar-like carbon precursors. Because of carbon deposition, hydrogen yields were significantly lower than expected; for instance at 550 °C the hydrogen yield potential was only 50% of the stoichiometric value.

A novel cantilever pressure sensor was developed in the Department of Physics at the University of Turku in order to solve the sensitivity problems which are encountered when condenser microphones are used in photoacoustic spectroscopy. The cantilever pressure sensor, combined with a laser interferometer for the measurement of the cantilever movements, proved to be highly sensitive. The original aim of this work was to integrate the sensor in a photoacoustic gas detector working in a differential measurement scheme. The integration was made successfully into three prototypes. In addition, the cantilever was also integrated in the photoacoustic FTIR measurement schemes of gas-, liquid-, and solid-phase samples. A theoretical model for the signal generation in each measurement scheme was created and the optimal celldesign discussed. The sensitivity and selectivity of the differential method were evaluated when a blackbody radiator and a mechanical chopper were used with CO2, CH4, CO, and C2H4 gases. The detection limits were in the sub-ppm level for all four gases with only a 1.3 second integration time and the cross interference was well below one percent for all gas combinations other than those between hydrocarbons. Sensitivity with other infrared sources was compared using ethylene as an example gas. In the comparison of sensitivity with different infrared sources the electrically modulated blackbody radiator gave a 35 times higher and the CO2-laser a 100 times lower detection limit than the blackbody radiator with a mechanical chopper. As a conclusion, the differential system is well suited to rapid single gas measurements. Gas-phase photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy gives the best performance, when several components have to be analyzed simultaneously from multicomponent samples. Multicomponent measurements were demonstrated with a sample that contained different concentrations of CO2, H2O, CO, and four different hydrocarbons. It required an approximately 10 times longer measurement time to achieve the same detection limit for a single gas as with the differential system. The properties of the photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy were also compared to conventional transmission FTIR spectroscopy by simulations. Solid- and liquid-phase photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy has several advantages compared to other techniques and therefore it also has a great variety of applications. A comparison of the signal-to-noise ratio between photoacoustic cells with a cantilever microphone and a condenser microphone was done with standard carbon black, polyethene, and sunflower oil samples. The cell with the cantilever microphone proved to have a 5-10 times higher signal-to-noise ratio than the reference detector, depending on the sample. Cantilever enhanced photoacoustics will be an effective tool for gas detection and analysis of solid- and liquid-phase samples. The preliminary prototypes gave good results in all three measurement schemes that were studied. According to simulations, there are possibilities for further enhancement of the sensitivity, as well as other properties, of each system.

Many of the reproductive disorders that emerge in adulthood have their origin during fetal development. Numerous studies have demonstrated that exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals can permanently affect the reproductive health of experimental animals. In mammals, male sexual differentiation and development are androgen-dependent processes. In rat, the critical programming window for masculinization occurs between embryonic days (EDs) 15.5 and 19.5. Disorders in sex steroid balance during fetal life can disturb the development of the male reproductive tract. In addition to the fetal testis, the adrenal cortex starts to produce steroid hormones before birth. Glucocorticoids produced by the adrenal cortex are essential for preparing the fetus for birth. In the present study, the effects of exposure to endocrine disrupters on fetal male rat testicular and adrenal development were investigated. To differentiate the systemic and direct testicular effects of endocrine disrupters, both in vivo and in vitro experiments were performed. The present study also clarified the role of desert hedgehog signalling (Dhh) in the development of the testis. The results indicate that endocrine disrupters, diethylstilbestrol (DES) and flutamide, are able to induce rapid steroidogenic changes in fetal rat testis under in vitro conditions. Although in utero exposure to these chemicals did not show overt effects in fetal testis, they can induce permanent changes in the developing testis and accessory sex organs later in life. We also reported that exposure to antiandrogens can interfere with testicular Dhh signalling and result in impaired differentiation of the fetal Leydig cells and subsequently lead to abnormal testicular development and sexual differentiation. In utero exposure to tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) caused direct testicular and pituitary effects on the fetal male rat but with different dose responses. In a study in which the effects of developmental exposure to environmental antiandrogens, di-isononylphthalate and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (p,p’-DDE), on fetal male rat steroidogenesis were investigated, chemicals did not down-regulate testicular or adrenal steroid hormone synthesis or production in 19.5-day-old fetal rats. However, p,p’-DDE-treatment caused clear histological and ultrastructural changes in the prenatal testis and adrenal gland. These structural alterations can disturb the development and function of fetal testis and adrenal gland that may become evident later in life. Exposure to endocrine disrupters during fetal life can cause morphological abnormalities and alter steroid hormone production by fetal rat Leydig cells and adrenocortical cells. These changes may contribute to the maldevelopment of the testis and the adrenal gland. The present study highlights the importance of the fetal period as a sensitive window for endocrine disruption.

Poly (ethylene) glycol (PEG) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), as additive agents, were used to enhance the activity of immobilized microbial lipase in organic solvent. Controlled pore silica (CPS) was selected as matrix and different immobilization procedures were evaluated: directly lipase binding on CPS and simultaneous addition of lipase and additive agent on the same support. The highest coupling yield (59.6%) was attained when the immobilization procedure was performed at lipase loading of 150 U/g support in the presence of PEG-1.500. This immobilized system was used in esterification reactions under repeated batch cycles and the biocatalyst half-life was found to increase 2.7 times when compared with the control.

Products resulting from the ethoxylation of hydroxylated compounds, especially water and ethanol, are of great commercial importance. This work presents several aspects concerning the catalytic reactions of ethylene oxide, a chemical substance used in the production of a wide variety of products. Mechanisms of ethoxylation, distribution of products, formation of undesired by-products and perspectives for new processes using heterogeneous catalysis are also reviewed and discussed.

A simple low-cost flow cell was developed, built and optimized in order to observe dynamic interfacial tension of continuous flow systems. Distinct materials can be used in one of the cell walls in order to observe the intermolecular forces between the flowing liquid and the chemical constitution of the walls. The fluorescence depolarization was evaluated using Rhodamine B as fluorescent probe seeded in ethylene glycol. The effects of the positioning angles on the data acquired across the cell are reported. The reproducibility of the data was evaluated with a spectrometer assembled in-house and the relative standard deviation was below 3%.

The olefin metathesis reaction allows the exchange of complex alkyl units between two olefins, with the formation of a new olefinic link and a sub-product olefin usually ethylene. This reaction has found extensive application in the last ten years with the development of the Grubbs and Schrock catalysts, in total synthesis of complex organic molecules, as opposed to the very important use in the petrochemical industry with relatively simple molecules. This review intends to trace a historical and mechanistic pathway from industry to academy, before illustrating the more recent advances.

In an attempt to improve the performance of organolanthanide catalysts we investigated the use of the industrially important cocatalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO) to activate organolanthanide compounds in olefin polymerization. The catalytic systems LnBrCp2(THF)2/MAO (Cp=cyclopentadienyl) and LnBrCp*2THF/MAO (Cp*= pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), Ln=Pr and Yb, were active in styrene polymerization but inactive in ethylene and propylene polymerization. These systems produced atactic polystyrene with conversions of up to 8.2% (PrBrCp*2THF, Al/Ln=200, T=80ºC, t=4 h) in toluene. In the absence of solvent, the conversion is 26.0% (1.5 h) and the molar mass of the atactic polystyrene is almost ten times higher (43 kg/mol).
