Generation and study of synthetic gauge fields has enhanced the possibility of using cold atom systems as quantum emulators of condensed matter Hamiltonians. In this article we describe the physics of interacting spin -1/2 fermions in synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields which induce a Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the motion of the fermions. We show that the fermion system can evolve to a Bose-Einstein condensate of a novel boson which we call rashbon. The rashbon-rashbon interaction is shown to be independent of the interaction between the constituent fermions. We also show that spin-orbit coupling can help enhancing superfluid transition temperature of weak superfluids to the order of Fermi temperature. A non-Abelian gauge field, when used in conjunction with another potential, can generate interesting Hamiltonians such as that of a magnetic monopole.

We derive exact expressions for the zeroth and the first three spectral moment sum rules for the retarded Green's function and for the zeroth and the first spectral moment sum rules for the retarded self-energy of the inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in nonequilibrium, when the local on-site repulsion and the chemical potential are time-dependent, and in the presence of an external time-dependent electromagnetic field. We also evaluate these expressions for the homogeneous case in equilibrium, where all time dependence and external fields vanish. Unlike similar sum rules for the Fermi-Hubbard model, in the Bose-Hubbard model case, the sum rules often depend on expectation values that cannot be determined simply from parameters in the Hamiltonian like the interaction strength and chemical potential but require knowledge of equal-time many-body expectation values from some other source. We show how one can approximately evaluate these expectation values for the Mott-insulating phase in a systematic strong-coupling expansion in powers of the hopping divided by the interaction. We compare the exact moment relations to the calculated moments of spectral functions determined from a variety of different numerical approximations and use them to benchmark their accuracy. Recently, Ebrahimi and Fragouli proposed an algorithm to construct scalar network codes using small fields (and vector network codes of small lengths) satisfying multicast constraints in a given single-source, acyclic network. The contribution of this paper is two fold. Primarily, we extend the scalar network coding algorithm of Ebrahimi and Fragouli (henceforth referred to as the EF algorithm) to block network-error correction. Existing construction algorithms of block network-error correcting codes require a rather large field size, which grows with the size of the network and the number of sinks, and thereby can be prohibitive in large networks. We give an algorithm which, starting from a given network-error correcting code, can obtain another network code using a small field, with the same error correcting capability as the original code. Our secondary contribution is to improve the EF Algorithm itself. The major step in the EF algorithm is to find a least degree irreducible polynomial which is coprime to another large degree polynomial. We suggest an alternate method to compute this coprime polynomial, which is faster than the brute force method in the work of Ebrahimi and Fragouli.

The gross characteristics of spatio-temporal current evolution in the return stroke phase of a cloud-to-ground lightning are rather well defined. However, they by themselves do not ensure the salient features for the resulting remote Electro- Magnetic Fields (EMFs). In spite of significant efforts in the engineering models wherein, the spatio-temporal current distribution all along the channel is specified by the design, all the salient features of remote EMFs could not be achieved. Only the current evolution that ensures the basic characteristics along with its ability to reproduce all the salient features of remote EMFs ranging from 50 m – 200 km from the lightning channel, can be considered as a realistic return stroke channel current. In view of this, the present work intends to investigate on the required fine features of the return stroke current evolution that yields all the desired features. To ensure that the current evolution is not arbitrary but obeys the involved basic physical processes, a recently developed physical model will be employed for the analysis.

This paper presents a unified framework using the unit cube for measurement, representation and usage of the range of motion (ROM) of body joints with multiple degrees of freedom (d.o.f) to be used for digital human models (DHM). Traditional goniometry needs skill and kn owledge; it is intrusive and has limited applicability for multi-d.o.f. joints. Measurements using motion capture systems often involve complicated mathematics which itself need validation. In this paper we use change of orientation as the measure of rotation; this definition does not require the identification of any fixed axis of rotation. A two-d.o.f. joint ROM can be represented as a Gaussian map. Spherical polygon representation of ROM, though popular, remains inaccurate, vulnerable due to singularities on parametric sphere and difficult to use for point classification. The unit cube representation overcomes these difficulties. In the work presented here, electromagnetic trackers have been effectively used for measuring the relative orientation of a body segment of interest with respect to another body segment. The orientation is then mapped on a surface gridded cube. As the body segment is moved, the grid cells visited are identified and visualized. Using the visual display as a feedback, the subject is instructed to cover as many grid cells as he can. In this way we get a connected patch of contiguous grid cells. The boundary of this patch represents the active ROM of the concerned joint. The tracker data is converted into the motion of a direction aligned with the axis of the segment and a rotation about this axis later on. The direction identifies the grid cells on the cube and rotation about the axis is represented as a range and visualized using color codes. Thus the present methodology provides a simple, intuitive and accura te determination and representation of up to 3 d.o.f. joints. Basic results are presented for the shoulder. The measurement scheme to be used for wrist and neck, and approach for estimation of the statistical distribution of ROM for a given population are also discussed.

Faraday-type electromagnetic flow meters are employed for measuring the flow rate of liquid sodium in fast breeder reactors. The calibration of such flow meters, owing to the required elaborative arrangements is rather difficult. On the other hand, theoretical approach requires solution of two coupled electromagnetic partial differential equation with profile of the flow and applied magnetic field as the inputs. This is also quite involved due to the 3D nature of the problem. Alternatively, Galerkin finite element method based numerical solution is suggested in the literature as an attractive option for the required calibration. Based on the same, a computer code in Matlab platform has been developed in this work with both 20 and 27 node brick elements. The boundary conditions are correctly defined and several intermediate validation exercises are carried out. Finally it is shown that the sensitivities predicted by the code for flow meters of four different dimensions agrees well with the results given by analytical expression, thereby providing strong validation. Sensitivity for higher flow rates, for which analytical approach does not exist, is shown to decrease with increase in flow velocity.

A network of ship-mounted real-time Automatic Weather Stations integrated with Indian geosynchronous satellites Indian National Satellites (INSATs)] 3A and 3C, named Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services Real-Time Automatic Weather Stations (I-RAWS), is established. The purpose of I-RAWS is to measure the surface meteorological-ocean parameters and transmit the data in real time in order to validate and refine the forcing parameters (obtained from different meteorological agencies) of the Indian Ocean Forecasting System (INDOFOS). Preliminary validation and intercomparison of analyzed products obtained from the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts using the data collected from I-RAWS were carried out. This I-RAWS was mounted on board oceanographic research vessel Sagar Nidhi during a cruise across three oceanic regimes, namely, the tropical Indian Ocean, the extratropical Indian Ocean, and the Southern Ocean. The results obtained from such a validation and intercomparison, and its implications with special reference to the usage of atmospheric model data for forcing ocean model, are discussed in detail. It is noticed that the performance of analysis products from both atmospheric models is similar and good; however, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts air temperature over the extratropical Indian Ocean and wind speed in the Southern Ocean are marginally better.

In this paper we present a hardware-software hybrid technique for modular multiplication over large binary fields. The technique involves application of Karatsuba-Ofman algorithm for polynomial multiplication and a novel technique for reduction. The proposed reduction technique is based on the popular repeated multiplication technique and Barrett reduction. We propose a new design of a parallel polynomial multiplier that serves as a hardware accelerator for large field multiplications. We show that the proposed reduction technique, accelerated using the modified polynomial multiplier, achieves significantly higher performance compared to a purely software technique and other hybrid techniques. We also show that the hybrid accelerated approach to modular field multiplication is significantly faster than the Montgomery algorithm based integrated multiplication approach.

We studied the development of surface instabilities leading to the generation of multielectron bubbles (MEBs) in superfluid helium upon the application of a pulsed electric field. We found the statistical distribution of the charge of individual instabilities to be strongly dependent on the duration of the electric field pulse. The rate and probability of generation of these instabilities in relation to the temporal characteristics of the applied field was also investigated.

The magnetic saw effect, induced by the Lorentz force generated due to the application of a series of electromagnetic ( EM) pulses, can be utilized to cut a metallic component containing a pre-existing cut or crack. By combining a mechanical force with the Lorentz force, the cut can be propagated along any arbitrary direction in a controlled fashion, thus producing an `electromagnetic jigsaw', yielding a novel tool-less, free-formed manufacturing process, particularly suitable for hard-to-cut metals. This paper presents validation of the above concept based on a simple analytical model, along with experiments on two materials - Pb foil and steel plate. (C) 2013 The Authors. Recent experiments on fermions in synthetic gauge fields result in systems with a spin-orbit coupling along one spatial axis, a detuning field, and a Zeeman field. We show theoretically that the presence of all three results in interesting and unusual phenomena in a system of interacting fermions (interactions described by a scattering length). For two fermions, bound states appear only over a certain range of the center-of-mass momenta. The deepest bound state appears at a nonzero center-of-mass momentum. For center-of-mass momenta without a bound state, the gauge field induces a resonance-like feature in the scattering continuum resulting in a large scattering phase shift. In the case of many particles, we demonstrate that the system, in a parameter range, shows flow-enhanced pairing, i.e., a Fulde-Farrell-Larkin-Ovchnnikov superfluid state made of robust pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum. Yet another regime of parameters offers the opportunity to study strongly interacting normal states of spin-orbit-coupled fermionic systems utilizing the resonance-like feature induced by the synthetic gauge field.

Recent data from high-statistics experiments that have measured the modulus of the pion electromagnetic form factor from threshold to relatively high energies are used as input in a suitable mathematical framework of analytic continuation to find stringent constraints on the shape parameters of the form factor at t = 0. The method uses also as input a precise description of the phase of the form factor in the elastic region based on Fermi-Watson theorem and the analysis of the pi pi scattering amplitude with dispersive Roy equations, and some information on the spacelike region coming from recent high precision experiments. Our analysis confirms the inconsistencies of several data on the modulus, especially from low energies, with analyticity and the input phase, noted in our earlier work. Using the data on the modulus from energies above 0.65 GeV, we obtain, with no specific parametrisation, the prediction < r(pi)(2)> is an element of (0.42, 0.44) fm(2) for the charge radius. The same formalism leads also to very narrow allowed ranges for the higher-order shape parameters at t = 0, with a strong correlation among them.

Electromagnetic field interactions with the composites made up of polyaniline (PANI) and single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) are simulated using the discrete dipole approximation. Recent observations on polymer nano-composites explain the interface interactions between the PANI host and the carbon nanostructures. These types of composite have potential applications in organic solar cell, gas sensor, bio-sensor and electro-chromic devices. Various nanostructures of PANI is possible in the form of nanowires, nanodisks, nanofibers and nanotubes have been reported. In the present study, we considered two types of composite, one is the PANI wrapped CNT and the other is CNT immersed in PANI nanotube. We use Modified Thole's parameters for calculating frequency dependent atomic polarizability of composites. Absorption spectra of the composites are studied by illuminating a wide range of electromagnetic energy spectrum. From the absorption spectra, we observe plasmon excitation in near-infrared region similar to that in SWCNTs reported recently. The interactions between the PANI and CNT in the composite, resulting electromagnetic absorptions are simulated.
