Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) is an economically important disease in most of sub-Saharan Africa. A conjoint analysis and ordered probit regression models were used to measure the preferences of farmers for CBPP vaccine and vaccination attributes. This was with regard to inclusion or not of an indicator in the vaccine, vaccine safety, vaccine stability as well as frequency of vaccination, vaccine administration and the nature of vaccination. The analysis was carried out in 190 households in Narok District of Kenya between October and December 2006 using structured questionnaires, 16 attribute profiles and a five-point Likert scale. The factors affecting attribute valuation were shown through a two-way location interaction model. The study also demonstrated the relative importance (RI) of attributes and the compensation value of attribute levels. The attribute coefficient estimates showed that farmers prefer a vaccine that has an indicator, is 100% safe and is administered by the government (p<0.0001). The preferences for the vaccine attributes were consistent with expectations. Preferences for stability, frequency of vaccination and nature of vaccination differed amongst farmers (p>0.05). While inclusion of an indicator in the vaccine was the most important attribute (RI=43.6%), price was the least important (RI=0.5%). Of the 22 household factors considered, 15 affected attribute valuation. The compensation values for a change from non inclusion to inclusion of an indicator, 95-100% safety, 2h to greater than 2h stability and from compulsory to elective vaccination were positive while those for a change from annual to biannual vaccination and from government to private administration were negative. The study concluded that the farmers in Narok District had preferences for specific vaccine and vaccination attributes. These preferences were conditioned by various household characteristics and disease risk factors. On average the farmers would need to be compensated or persuaded to accept biannual and private vaccination against CBPP. There is need for consideration of farmer preferences for vaccine attribute levels during vaccine formulations and farmer preferences for vaccination attribute levels when designing delivery of vaccines.

E. H. Gombrich and others have analysed the uses made of language and imagery from Virgil's famous fourth Eclogue in panegyrical writing by partisans of the Medici dynasty in Florence. This study examines the appropriation of the theme of the returning Golden Age and related motifs from the fourth Eclogue in other Italian courts during the same period, by supporters of the Visconti and Sforza of Milan, the Gonzaga of Mantua, Leonello d'Este and his successors in Ferrara, and the Bentivoglio of Bologna, among others. The deployment of this Virgilian material in political panegyric is seen to be a central element in the self-definition and self-promotion of dynastic rulers throughout the peninsula.

Rodents are involved in the transmission to human beings of several diseases, including liptospirosis, which shows high lethality rates in Sao Paulo municipality. Despite this, few studies have assessed the relationship existing between urban environmental conditions and building rodent infestation. With the purpose of clarifying this relationship, an analysis has been conducted in order to quantify the influence of environmental factors upon rodent infestation on a low-income district. Diagnosis of the environmental situation has been performed to evaluate the frequency according to which harborage, food and access sources occur, and a survey on infestation rates in 2175 dwellings in the area studied. The logistic regression analysis showed that among the environmental variables, the one that showed the closest association with rodent infestation was access; followed by harborage, and food. It was concluded that poor socioeconomic and environmental conditions in the area propitiate the occurrence of high rodent infestation rates.

The occurrences of imperial topaz in the Antonio Pereira mine, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, are associated with the metamorphic carbonate rocks of the Minas Supergroup. The crystals have densities varying from 3.46 to 3.58. The parameters of the unitary cells obtained were: 4.658 to 4.663 angstrom (ao), 8.823 to 8.832 angstrom (b(o)), 8.382 to 8.389 angstrom (c(o)), and 344.65 to 345.46 angstrom 3 (V). The refraction indices presented the following variations: 1.622 to 1.630 (nX), 1.624 to 1.632 (nY), 1.633 to 1.640 (nZ), and 0.008 to 0.011 (B). These properties are coherent with the low fluorine contents obtained (16,48%/17,05wt%). Infrared spectroscopy and microthermometry showed that the fluid inclusions, which represent the mineralizing fluids, are formed by H(2)O (with Ca(2+), Mg(2+) and Na(+)), and CO(2) +/- CH(4). The minimal trapping T-P conditions of 290/320 degrees C and 2,349/2,497bar were obtained for the primary fluid inclusions. The pseudo-secondary fluid inclusions were trapped at conditions of lower temperatures and variable pressures, during the deformation process under local alternating states of stress. The microthermometric studies, the structural analysis and the fluorine contents suggest that the mineralized veins were formed from hydrothermal fluids originated during the Brasiliano tectono-metamorphic event.

This Minor Field Study was carried out during November and December in 2011 in the Mount Elgon District in Western Kenya. The objective was to examine nine small-scale farming household´s land use and socioeconomic situation when they have joined a non-governmental organization (NGO) project, which specifically targets small-scale farming households to improve land use system and socioeconomic situation by the extension of soil and water conservation measures. The survey has worked along three integral examinations methods which are mapping and processing data using GIS, semi structured interviews and literature studies.   This study has adopted a theoretical approach referred to as political ecology, in which landesque capital is a central concept. The result shows that all farmers, except one, have issues with land degradation. However, the extent of the problem and also implemented sustainable soil and water conservation measures were diverse among the farmers. The main causes of this can both be linked to how the farmers themselves utilized their farmland and how impacts from the climate change have modified the terms of the farmers working conditions. These factors have consequently resulted in impacts on the informants’ socioeconomic conditions. Furthermore it was also registered that social and economic elements, in some cases, were the causes of how the farmers manage their farmland. The farmer who had no significant problem with soil erosion had invested in trees and opportunities to irrigate the farmland. In addition, it was also recorded that certain farmers had invested in particular soil and water conservation measures without any significant result. This was probably due to the time span these land measures cover before they start to generate revenue.  The outcome of this study has traced how global, national and local elements exist in a context when it comes to the conditions of the farmers´ land use and their socioeconomic situation. The farmers atMt.Elgon are thereby a component of a wider context when they are both contributory to their socioeconomic situation, mainly due to their land management, and also exposed to core-periphery relationships on which the farmers themselves have no influence.

BACKGROUND: Misoprostol is established for the treatment of incomplete abortion but has not been systematically assessed when provided by midwives at district level in a low-resource setting. We investigated the effectiveness and safety of midwives diagnosing and treating incomplete abortion with misoprostol, compared with physicians. METHODS: We did a multicentre randomised controlled equivalence trial at district level at six facilities in Uganda. Eligibility criteria were women with signs of incomplete abortion. We randomly allocated women with first-trimester incomplete abortion to clinical assessment and treatment with misoprostol either by a physician or a midwife. The randomisation (1:1) was done in blocks of 12 and was stratified for study site. Primary outcome was complete abortion not needing surgical intervention within 14-28 days after initial treatment. The study was not masked. Analysis of the primary outcome was done on the per-protocol population with a generalised linear-mixed effects model. The predefined equivalence range was -4% to 4%. The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01844024. FINDINGS: From April 30, 2013, to July 21, 2014, 1108 women were assessed for eligibility. 1010 women were randomly assigned to each group (506 to midwife group and 504 to physician group). 955 women (472 in the midwife group and 483 in the physician group) were included in the per-protocol analysis. 452 (95·8%) of women in the midwife group had complete abortion and 467 (96·7%) in the physician group. The model-based risk difference for midwife versus physician group was -0·8% (95% CI -2·9 to 1·4), falling within the predefined equivalence range (-4% to 4%). The overall proportion of women with incomplete abortion was 3·8% (36/955), similarly distributed between the two groups (4·2% [20/472] in the midwife group, 3·3% [16/483] in the physician group). No serious adverse events were recorded. INTERPRETATION: Diagnosis and treatment of incomplete abortion with misoprostol by midwives is equally safe and effective as when provided by physicians, in a low-resource setting. Scaling up midwives' involvement in treatment of incomplete abortion with misoprostol at district level would increase access to safe post-abortion care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess women´s acceptability of diagnosis and treatment of incomplete abortion with misoprostol by midwives, compared with physicians. METHODS: This was an analysis of secondary outcomes from a multi-centre randomized controlled equivalence trial at district level in Uganda. Women with first trimester incomplete abortion were randomly allocated to clinical assessment and treatment with misoprostol by a physician or a midwife. The randomisation (1:1) was done in blocks of 12 and stratified for health care facility. Acceptability was measured in expectations and satisfaction at a follow up visit 14-28 days following treatment. Analysis of women's overall acceptability was done using a generalized linear mixed-effects model with an equivalence range of -4% to 4%. The study was not masked. The trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.org, NCT 01844024. RESULTS: From April 2013 to June 2014, 1108 women were assessed for eligibility of which 1010 were randomized (506 to midwife and 504 to physician). 953 women were successfully followed up and included in the acceptability analysis. 95% (904) of the participants found the treatment satisfactory and overall acceptability was found to be equivalent between the two study groups. Treatment failure, not feeling calm and safe following treatment, experiencing severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding following treatment, were significantly associated with non-satisfaction. No serious adverse events were recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of incomplete abortion with misoprostol by midwives and physician was highly, and equally, acceptable to women. Background: Abortion is restricted in Uganda, and poor access to contraceptive methods result in unwanted pregnancies. This leaves women no other choice than unsafe abortion, thus placing a great burden on the Ugandan health system and making unsafe abortion one of the major contributors to maternal mortality and morbidity in Uganda. The existing sexual and reproductive health policy in Uganda supports the sharing of tasks in post-abortion care. This task sharing is taking place as a pragmatic response to the increased workload. This study aims to explore physicians' and midwives' perception of post-abortion care with regard to professional competences, methods, contraceptive counselling and task shifting/sharing in post-abortion care. Methods: In-depth interviews (n = 27) with health care providers of post-abortion care were conducted in seven health facilities in the Central Region of Uganda. The data were organized using thematic analysis with an inductive approach. Results: Post-abortion care was perceived as necessary, albeit controversial and sometimes difficult to provide. Together with poor conditions post-abortion care provoked frustration especially among midwives. Task sharing was generally taking place and midwives were identified as the main providers, although they would rarely have the proper training in post-abortion care. Additionally, midwives were sometimes forced to provide services outside their defined task area, due to the absence of doctors. Different uterine evacuation skills were recognized although few providers knew of misoprostol as a method for post-abortion care. An overall need for further training in post-abortion care was identified. Conclusions: Task sharing is taking place, but providers lack the relevant skills for the provision of quality care. For post-abortion care to improve, task sharing needs to be scaled up and in-service training for both doctors and midwives needs to be provided. Post-abortion care should further be included in the educational curricula of nurses and midwives. Scaled-up task sharing in post-abortion care, along with misoprostol use for uterine evacuation would provide a systematic approach to improving the quality of care and accessibility of services, with the aim of reducing abortion-related mortality and morbidity in Uganda.

The article reviews the modelling of District Metered Areas (DMAs) with relatively high leakage rate. As a generally recognised approach in modelling of leakage does not exist, modelling of leakage by enginners and other researchers usually takes place by dividing the whole leakage rate evenly to all available nodes of the model. In this article, a new methodology is proposed to determine the nodal leakage by using a hydraulic model. The proposed methodology takes into consideration the IWA water balance methodology, the Minimum Night Flow (MNF) analysis, the number of connections related to each node and the marerial of pipes. In addition, the model is illustrated by a real case study, as it was applied in Kalipoli’s DMA. Results show that the proposed model gives reliable results.

O Estado exerce a função jurisdicional com a finalidade de composição dos conflitos litigiosos, sendo o processo o meio pelo qual ela se materializa. Com isso, tem-se o acesso à justiça, no sentido de ser garantido o exame de uma pretensão, em tempo aceitável, com a segurança de um tratamento adequado, que seja reflexo dos valores da sociedade em que se vive. O Poder Judiciário sofre críticas de toda ordem: no Brasil dos dias atuais, a morosidade é o principal problema apontado. Tanto é assim, que a sociedade brasileira passou a exigir uma solução para isso com tamanha ênfase, que a razoável duração do processo foi incluída no rol de garantias individuais da Constituição da República. Muitas alternativas têm sido buscadas com a intenção de reduzir o tempo de duração do processo, sendo a via eletrônica uma dessas opções. No ano de 2006, entrou em vigor a Lei n. 11.419, que trata da informatização do processo judicial. Este estudo realizou uma avaliação do contexto que levou à busca pela rápida solução dos litígios, com análise da lei que instituiu o meio eletrônico na tramitação dos processos, restrito a esta ótica de redução do tempo de duração do processo. Com base em um estudo de caso realizado no 4o Juizado Especial Cível da Comarca de Porto Velho, demonstrou- se que, ao menos nesta unidade jurisdicional, houve efetiva diminuição no tempo de duração dos processos. Ponderou-se, ainda, acerca do software livre que está sendo disponibilizado pelo Conselho Nacional de Justiça para uso por parte dos tribunais, o Processo Judicial eletrônico – PJe, concluindo-se que a ferramenta terá condições de servir de instrumento para redução do termo final do processo. Finalizou-se esta dissertação com considerações sobre tudo o que foi estudado, ressaltando a idéia de que todos os atores que atuam na solução dos conflitos devem contribuir para que seja alcançada a paz.

Por mais que a informatização esteja avançada (interligação por meio da rede internet de computadores entre os órgãos e entidades públicas pelo Estado), máquina alguma substituirá os dramas do homem contemporâneo, principalmente aqueles que sempre estiveram alijados da cidadania. O presente estudo traz à baila as reflexões e discussões acadêmicas desenvolvidas ao longo das mais de 700 horas/aulas do curso de mestrado em Poder Judiciário, turma 2010. Longe de ser uma unanimidade o Poder Judiciário é um poder do Estado que representa antes de tudo a capacidade e a prerrogativa de julgar, de acordo com as regras constitucionais e das leis criadas pelo Poder Legislativo em determinado país. É um dos mais sólidos pilares nas democracias e um perigoso algoz nos regimes absolutos. Apesar desta importância e de no Brasil ser um poder sólido que já demonstrou sua importância para a garantia da solidificação da democracia, são poucos os estudos sobre o Judiciário, poucos e iniciais são as pesquisas sérias sobre este poder de suma importância para a sociedade, para economia e para as instituições. Como, também, não é espanto quando vemos que fato repetitivo que a maior insatisfação ou reclamação da sociedade reside na morosidade das soluções judiciais traduzida pela alta taxa de litigiosidade da justiça brasileira. O Poder Judiciário é objeto de estudos sistemáticos, contínuos e avançados em diversos países que já demonstraram a importância de se conhecer bem as suas propostas, os resultados das suas atividades, funções e os seus gastos, pois, o seu “negócio”é a resolução dos conflitos da sociedade de forma a contribuir com a pacificação da mesma através de uma ordem jurídica justa. Os estudos realizados nos Estados Unidos, Alemanha e Espanha, como exemplo, demonstram que conhecer bem o judiciário é o primeiro passo para melhor gerenciá-lo. Assim, deve-se menção e reconhecimento no investimento realizado pela Fundação Getúlio Vargas em promover com destaque o presente Mestrado em Poder Judiciário. A FGV é uma das poucas instituições privadas que tem como um dos seus objetivos o preparo pessoal, extrapolando as fronteiras do ensino com avanços significativos nas áreas da pesquisa e da informação. No mesmo caminho da qualificação profissional de seus magistrados e servidores e na vanguarda da gestão judiciária, o Tribunal de Justiça do Distrito Federal e dos Territórios, investiu e acreditou na proposta de estudos e pesquisas do presente mestrado, merecendo, significativamente, os elogios e agradecimentos pela visão de futuro e investimento realizado no conhecimento que é sempre importante e necessário. A dissertação em comento representa primeiramente uma visão contraposta ao modelo de política pública encampada pelo Conselho Nacional de Justiça, através da Resolução 125 de 29 de novembro de 2010, cujo objeto é o tratamento adequado dos conflitos de interesse no âmbito do Poder Judiciário, representando, assim, interesse especial de pesquisa científica por se tratar de uma política nacional judiciária a ser adotada, obrigatoriamente, por todos os Tribunais de Justiça do país. Além deste aspecto supra referido, reside, também, o fato do ineditismo deste estudo e pesquisa, especificamente, porque essa política pública judiciária aborda aspectos e variáveis novas no tratamento das atividades e das funções próprias do Poder Judiciário quando propõem, como exemplo, o tratamento dos conflitos considerados pré processuais. Outro aspecto importante merecedor de atenção no estudo reflete-se na discussão do modelo de política pública que, em premissa vênia, deveria ser tratado em caráter geral republicando do Estado e não particularizado em um dos seus entes, mesmo que pareça ser, constitucionalmente, pressuposto da alçada do Poder Judiciário tratar exclusivamente do problema da altíssima litigiosidade e do baixo resultado de resposta à demanda posta para seu controle. Este estudo, tem como objetivo demonstrar que a resolução 125/2010 do CNJ é insuficiente para resolver os problemas de congestionamento e morosidade da Justiça brasileira, como preconizada, isso porque, o modelo que se propõe para combater o problema da morosidade é restrito e está “contaminado” pela idéia do monopólio da jurisdição ou por uma espécie similar que traz para o âmbito do judiciário uma nova atividade de trabalho, a qual é relacionada com a solução do conflito pré-processual a qual deveria fazer parte de uma política pública geral não restrita a um poder republicano. A correspondência dos argumentos com a materialização utilizada para o problema será comprovada nas linhas que se seguem, pois, assuntos com grande abrangência como as soluções judiciais devem, preferencialmente, adotar mecanismos públicos de caráter geral para uma boa solução. Nesse sentido, o trabalho demonstrará que as tentativas recorrentes em superar o problema da alta demanda judicial está restrita a modelos insuficientes abrangidos por um monopólio que não deveria ser aplicado para solucionar problemas pré processuais no âmbito do Poder Judiciário. Constitui, pois, um contraponto à idéia de efetividade na redução da demanda judicial tradicional 1 como prevista pela política pública judiciária frente ao monopólio da jurisdição, ou seja, frente à reserva que detém o Judiciário na promoção e gestão de uma nova atividade – o tratamento dos conflitos de interesse pré-processual por meio dos instrumentos de autocomposição, notadamente as conciliações e mediações. Apresentam-se, igualmente, neste trabalho proposições legislativas que dão o suporte material às idéias apresentadas, caracterizando a comprovação de viabilidade entre a apresentação do problema científico, as justificativas para o enfrentamento do problema e uma solução para o mesmo, como vista a modernizar uma política pública. Importante reafirmar que o escopo do presente trabalho não reside na observação própria dos modelos e técnicas de resolução de conflitos, notadamente as conciliações e mediações, incentivadas pelo CNJ, ou nos modelos arbitragem. Ao contrário, espera-se que todas as tentativas que possam melhorar e modernizar os atuais serviços judiciais no Brasil sejam válidas, eficazes e são muito bem vindas, pois, é uma tentativa positiva para melhorar o atual cenário em que se encontra o Poder Judiciário quando é confrontado em seu acesso à justiça, rapidez, confiabilidade e segurança nos seus julgamentos.
