The use of ontologies as representations of knowledge is widespread but their construction, until recently, has been entirely manual. We argue in this paper for the use of text corpora and automated natural language processing methods for the construction of ontologies. We delineate the challenges and present criteria for the selection of appropriate methods. We distinguish three ma jor steps in ontology building: associating terms, constructing hierarchies and labelling relations. A number of methods are presented for these purposes but we conclude that the issue of data-sparsity still is a ma jor challenge. We argue for the use of resources external tot he domain specific corpus.

This reported work significantly extends the reach of 10Gbit/s on-off keying singlemode fibre (SMF) transmission using full-field based electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) to 900 km. In addition, the EDC balances the complexity and the adaptation capability by employing a simple dispersive transmission line with static parameters for coarse dispersion compensation and 16-state maximum likelihood sequence estimation with Gaussian approximation based channel training for adaptive impairment trimming. Improved adaptation times of less than 400 ns for a bit error rate target of 10-3 over distances ranging from 0 to 900 km are reported.

It is numerically demonstrated, for the first time, that dispersion management and in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors can achieve all-optical passive regeneration and distance-unlimited transmission of a soliton data stream at 40 Gbit/s over standard fibre.

This paper describes the work undertaken in the Scholarly Ontologies Project. The aim of the project has been to develop a computational approach to support scholarly sensemaking, through interpretation and argumentation, enabling researchers to make claims: to describe and debate their view of a document's key contributions and relationships to the literature. The project has investigated the technicalities and practicalities of capturing conceptual relations, within and between conventional documents in terms of abstract ontological structures. In this way, we have developed a new kind of index to distributed digital library systems. This paper reports a case study undertaken to test the sensemaking tools developed by the Scholarly Ontologies project. The tools used were ClaiMapper, which allows the user to sketch argument maps of individual papers and their connections, ClaiMaker, a server on which such models can be stored and saved, which provides interpretative services to assist the querying of argument maps across multiple papers and ClaimFinder, a novice interface to the search services in ClaiMaker.

We present experimental results for the effect of an increased supervisory signal power in a high-loss loopback supervisory system in an optically amplified wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission line. The study focuses on the investigation of increasing the input power for the supervisory signal and the effect on the co-propagating WDM data signals using different channel spacing. This investigation is useful for determining the power limitation of the supervisory signal if extra power is needed to improve the monitoring. The study also shows the effect of spacing on the quality of the supervisory signal itself because of interaction with adjacent data signals.

The conservation, spread, comprehension and recreation of traditional culture heritages is one of the main purpose of the National Ethnographic Museum in Bulgaria. As other cultural and scientific heritage institutions, it begins to use new information technologies and strategies for providing access to its cultural heritage treasures. This paper aims to present digital libraries with multimedia content as a modern technological solution for innovative presentation of Bulgarian ethnographical heritage. It includes some basic concepts of digital libraries with multimedia content and a description of three types of architecture. The paper also describes the ideas, conceptual decisions and strategies in the project Experimental Digital Library “Bulgarian Ethnographic Treasury”.

his paper presents an ontological model of the knowledge about Bulgarian iconographical artefacts. It also describes content-sensitive services for access, browse, search and group iconographical objects, based on the presented ontology that will be implemented in the multimedia digital library “Virtual encyclopedia of Bulgarian iconography”.

Preserving and presenting the Bulgarian folklore heritage is a long-term commitment of scholars and researchers working in many areas. This article presents ontological model of the Bulgarian folklore knowledge, exploring knowledge technologies for presenting the semantics of the phenomena of our traditional culture. This model is a step to the development of the digital library for the “Bulgarian Folklore Heritage” virtual exposition which is a part of the “Knowledge Technologies for Creation of Digital Presentation and Significant Repositories of Folklore Heritage” project.
