An analysis is developed to study the unsteady mixed convection flow over a vertical cone rotating in an ambient fluid with a time-dependent angular velocity in the presence of a magnetic field. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficients in the tangential and azimuthal directions and the local Nusselt number increase with the time when the angular velocity of the-cone increases, but the reverse trend is observed for decreasing angular velocity. However, these are not mirror reflection of each other. The magnetic field reduces the skin friction coefficient in the tangential direction and also the Nusselt number, but it increases the skin friction coefficient in the azimuthal direction. The skin friction coefficients and the Nusselt number increase with the buoyancy force.

The data obtained in the earlier parts of this series for the donor and acceptor end parameters of N-H. O and O-H. O hydrogen bonds have been utilised to obtain a qualitative working criterion to classify the hydrogen bonds into three categories: “very good” (VG), “moderately good” (MG) and weak (W). The general distribution curves for all the four parameters are found to be nearly of the Gaussian type. Assuming that the VG hydrogen bonds lie between 0 and ± la, MG hydrogen bonds between ± 1s̀ and ± 2s̀, W hydrogen bonds beyond ± 2s̀ (where s̀ is the standard deviation), suitable cut-off limits for classifying the hydrogen bonds in the three categories have been derived. These limits are used to get VG and MG ranges for the four parameters 1 and θ (at the donor end) and ± and ± (at the acceptor end). The qualitative strength of a hydrogen bond is decided by the cumulative application of the criteria to all the four parameters. The criterion has been further applied to some practical examples in conformational studies such as α-helix and can be used for obtaining suitable location of hydrogen atoms to form good hydrogen bonds. An empirical approach to the energy of hydrogen bonds in the three categories has also been presented.

The reaction of the benzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H2L) with MoO2(acac)(2)] proceeds smoothly in refluxing ethanol to afford an orange complex MoO2L(C2H5OH)] (1). The substrate binding capacity of 1 has been demonstrated by the formation and isolation of two mononuclear MoO2L(Q)] {where Q = imidazole (2a) and 1-methylimidazole (2b)} and one dinuclear (MoO2L)(2)(Q)] {Q = 4,4'-bipyridine (3)} mixed-ligand oxomolybdenum complex. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic and spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis and NMR) measurements. The molecular structures of all the oxomolybdenum(VI) complexes (1, 2a, 2b and 3) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In each complex, the dianionic planar ligand is coordinated to the metal centre via one enolate oxygen, one phenolate oxygen and an azomethine nitrogen atom. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentration of these complexes and their antibacterial activity indicates that compounds 2a and 2b are potential lead molecules for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Precision inspection of manufactured components having multiple complex surfaces and variable tolerance definition is an involved, complex and time-consuming function. In routine practice, a jig is used to present the part in a known reference frame to carry out the inspection process. Jigs involve both time and cost in their development, manufacture and use. This paper describes 'as is where is inspection' (AIWIN), a new automated inspection technique that accelerates the inspection process by carrying out a fast registration procedure and establishing a quick correspondence between the part to inspect and its CAD geometry. The main challenge in doing away with a jig is that the inspection reference frame could be far removed from the CAD frame. Traditional techniques based on iterative closest point (ICP) or Newton methods require either a large number of iterations for convergence or fail in such a situation. A two-step coarse registration process is proposed to provide a good initial guess for a modified ICP algorithm developed earlier (Ravishankar et al., Int J Adv Manuf Technol 46(1-4):227-236, 2010). The first step uses a calibrated sphere for local hard registration and fixing the translation error. This transformation locates the centre for the sphere in the CAD frame. In the second step, the inverse transformation (involving pure rotation about multiple axes) required to align the inspection points measured on the manufactured part with the CAD point dataset of the model is determined and enforced. This completes the coarse registration enabling fast convergence of the modified ICP algorithm. The new technique has been implemented on complex freeform machined components and the inspection results clearly show that the process is precise and reliable with rapid convergence. © 2011 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

In this paper, we have carried out thin film characterization of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)-sultone (PProDOT-S), a derivative of electrochromic poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT). PProDOT-S was deposited onto transparent conducting oxide coated glass substrates by solution casting method. Single wavelength spectrophotometry is used to monitor the switching speed and contrast ratio at maximum wavelength (lambda (max)). The percentage transmittance at the lambda (max) of the neutral polymer is monitored as a function of time when the polymer film is repeatedly switched. This experiment gives a quantitative measure of the speed with which a film is able to switch between the two states i.e. the coloured and the bleached states. PProDOT-S films were switched at a voltage of 1 center dot 9 V with a switching speed of 2 s at lambda (max) of 565 nm and showed a contrast of similar to 37%. Cyclic voltammetry performed at different scan rates have shown the characteristic anodic and cathodic peaks. The structural investigations of PProDOT-S films by IR spectra were in good agreement with previously reported results. Raman spectra of PProDOT-S showed a strong Raman peak at 1509 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and a weak peak at 1410 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) due to the C = C asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of thiophene rings. The morphological investigations carried out by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) of polymer films have shown that these polymers are found to be arranged in dense packed clusters with non-uniform distribution having an average width and length of 95 nm and 160 nm, respectively.

We investigate the relaxation dynamics of photogenerated carriers in silicon nanowires consisting of a crystalline core and a surrounding amorphous shell, using femtosecond time-resolved differential reflectivity and transmission spectroscopy at 3.15 eV and 1.57 eV photon energies. The complex behaviour of the differential transmission and reflectivity transients is the mixed contributions from the crystalline core and the amorphous silicon on the nanowire surface and the substrate where competing effects of state-filling and photoinduced absorption govern the carrier dynamics. Faster relaxation rates are observed on increasing the photogenerated carrier density. Independent experimental results on crystalline silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) help us in separating the contributions from the carrier dynamics in crystalline core and the amorphous regions in the nanowire samples. Further, single-beam z-scan nonlinear transmission experiments at 1.57 eV in both open- and close-aperture configurations yield two-photon absorption coefficient beta (similar to 3 cm/GW) and nonlinear refraction coefficient gamma (-2.5 x 10 (-aEuro parts per thousand 4) cm(2)/GW).

Planar imidazolium cation based gemini surfactants 16-Im-n-Im-16], 2Br(-) (where n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12), exhibit different morphologies and internal packing arrangements by adopting different supramolecular assemblies in aqueous media depending on their number of spacer methylene units (CH2)(n). Detailed measurements of the small-angle neutron-scattering (SANS) cross sections from different imidazolium-based surfactant micelles in aqueous media (D2O) are reported. The SANS data, containing the information of aggregation behavior of such surfactants in the molecular level, have been analyzed on the basis of the Hayter and Penfold model for the macro ion solution to compute the interparticle structure factor S(Q) taking into account the screened Coulomb interactions between the dimeric surfactant micelles. The characteristic changes in the SANS spectra of the dimeric surfactant with n = 4 due to variation of temperature have also been investigated. These data are then compared with the SANS characterization data of the corresponding gemini micelles containing tetrahedral ammonium ion based polar headgroups. The critical micellar concentration of each surfactant micelle (cmc) has been determined using pyrene as an extrinsic fluorescence probe. The variation of cmc as a function of spacer chain length has been explained in terms of conformational variation and progressive looping of the spacer into the micellar interior upon increasing the n values. Small-angle neutron-scattering (SANS) cross sections from different mixed micelles composed of surfactants with ammonium headgroups, 16-A(0), 16-Am-n-Am-16], 2Br(-) (where n = 4), 16-I-0, and 16-Im-n-Im-16], 2Br(-) (where n = 4), in aqueous media (D2O) have also been analyzed. The aggregate composition matches with that predicted from the ideal mixing model.

The syntheses and characterization of some new mixed-ligand nickel(II) complexes {Ni(L-1)(PPh3)] (1), Ni(L-1)(Py)] (2), Ni(L-2)(PPh3)]center dot DMSO (3), Ni(L-2)(Imz)] (4), Ni(L-3)(4-pic)] (5) and RNi(L-3))(2)(mu-4,4'-byp)]center dot 2DMSO (6)1 of three selected thiosemicarbazones the 4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazones of salicylaldehyde) (H2L1-3) (A, Scheme 1) are described in the present study, differing in the inductive effect of the substituent X (X = F, Br and OCH3), in order to observe its influence, if any, on the redox potentials and biological activity of the complexes. All the synthesized ligands and the metal complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures of four mononuclear (1-3 and 5) and one dinuclear (6) Ni(II) complex have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of these complexes and their antibacterial activities indicate that compound 4 is the potential lead molecule for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The optical properties and electrical conductivity of highly conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) are reported as a function of the processing additive conditions. The addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) increases the conductivity and modifies the dielectric response as observed from the ellipsometric studies. Also the surface roughness and morphology change with the composition of PEDOT: PSS: DMSO and film deposition conditions. The real part of the dielectric function becomes negative in highly conducting samples, indicating the presence of delocalized charge carriers. The real and imaginary parts of the refractive index were determined as a function of wavelength. The results are consistent with the increase in conductivity upon the addition of DMSO.

Ellipsometric measurements in a wide spectral range (from 0.05 to 6.5 eV) have been carried out on the organic semiconducting polymer, poly2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MDMO-PPV), in both undoped and doped states. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function and the refractive index are determined accurately, provided that the layer thickness is measured independently. After doping, the optical properties show the presence of new peaks, which could be well-resolved by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Also for the doped material, the complex refractive index, with respect to the dielectric function, has been determined. The broadening of the optical transitions is due to the delocalization of polarons at higher doping level. The detailed information about the dielectric function as well as refractive index function obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry allows not only qualitative but also quantitative description of the optical properties of the undoped/doped polymer. For the direct characterization of the optical properties of MDMO-PPV, ellipsometry turns out to be advantageous compared to conventional reflection and transmission measurements.

Natural multispecies acoustic choruses such as the dusk chorus of a tropical rain forest consist of simultaneously signalling individuals of different species whose calls travel through a common shared medium before reaching their `intended' receivers. This causes masking interference between signals and impedes signal detection, recognition and localization. The levels of acoustic overlap depend on a number of factors, including call structure, intensity, habitat-dependent signal attenuation and receiver tuning. In addition, acoustic overlaps should also depend on caller density and the species composition of choruses, including relative and absolute abundance of the different calling species. In this study, we used simulations to examine the effects of chorus species relative abundance and caller density on the levels of effective heterospecific acoustic overlap in multispecies choruses composed of the calls of five species of crickets and katydids that share the understorey of a rain forest in southern India. We found that on average species-even choruses resulted in higher levels of effective heterospecific acoustic overlap than choruses with strong dominance structures. This effect was found consistently across dominance levels ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 for larger choruses of forty individuals. For smaller choruses of twenty individuals, the effect was seen consistently for dominance levels of 0.6 and 0.8 but not 0.4. Effective acoustic overlap (EAO) increased with caller density but the manner and extent of increase depended both on the species' call structure and the acoustic context provided by the composition scenario. The Phaloria sp. experienced very low levels of EAO and was highly buffered to changes in acoustic context whereas other species experienced high FAO across contexts or were poorly buffered. These differences were not simply predictable from call structures. These simulation-based findings may have important implications for acoustic biodiversity monitoring and for the study of acoustic masking interference in natural environments. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Persistent infection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which are currently diagnosed by invasive liver biopsy. Approximately 15-20% of cases of chronic liver diseases in India are caused by HCV infection. In North India, genotype 3 is predominant, whereas genotype 1 is predominant in southern parts of India. The aim of this study was to identify differentially regulated serum proteins in HCV-infected Indian patients (genotypes 1 and 3) using a two-dimensional electrophoresis approach. We identified eight differentially expressed proteins by MS. Expression levels of one of the highly upregulated proteins, retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), was validated by ELISA and Western blotting in two independent cohorts. We also confirmed our observation in the JFH1 infectious cell culture system. Interestingly, the HCV core protein enhanced RBP4 levels and partial knockdown of RBP4 had a positive impact on HCV replication, suggesting a possible role for this cellular protein in regulating HCV infection. Analysis of RBP4-interacting partners using a bioinformatic approach revealed novel insights into the possible involvement of RBP4 in HCV-induced pathogenesis. Taken together, this study provided information on the proteome profile of the HCV-infected Indian population, and revealed a link between HCV infection, RBP4 and insulin resistance.
