Histogical and ultrastructural aspects of the brindley's glands of pantrongylus megistus (Burmeister, 1835) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

The Brindley's glands of Panstrongylus megistus were studied under the antomic, histologic and ultrastructural point of view. These glands located in the insect's methatorax are paired and have an opening near the third parir of the feet. Beside this aperture, ther are evaporation areas. Shape, sixe and aspect of the gland vary according to the feeding status. The glands are composed by a tubular part corresponding to the duct and a sack-like portion corrsponding to the secretory part. By electron microscopy we observed that the basal part of the epithelium has many interdigitations associated with mitochondria. On the apical surface where epicuticular foldings are located an electonlucent space is often seen. The glands are composed of the following elements: 1) superficial epithelial cells, located just below the apical surface foldings; 2) secretory cells; which are long and have an intracellular canalicule which changes according to the functional state of the cell; 3) a collecting duct to the secretory cells and covered with an epicuticle, reaching up to the gland's lumen; and 4) cells around the duct.

Scanning electron microscopy of the dorsal vessel of Panstrongylus megistus (Burmeister, 1835) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

In this study we analyzed the microanatomy of the dorsal vessel of the triatomine Panstrongylus megistus. The organ is a tuble anatomically divided into an anterior aorta anad a posterior heart, connected to the body wall through 8 pairs of alary muscles. The heart is divided in 3 chambers by means of 2 pairs of cardiac valves. a pair of ostia can be observed in the lateral wall of each chamber. A bundle of nerve fibers was found outside the organ, running dorsally along its major axis. A group of longitudinal muscular fibers was found in the ventral portion of the vessel. The vessel was found to be lined both internally and externally by pericardial cells covered by a thin laminar membrane. Inseide the vessel the pericardial cells were disposed in layers and on the outside they formed clusters or rows.

The Acts of Paul and the Canonical Acts : A Phenomenon of Rereading

(Abstract only in french) Une approche littéraire de l'intertextualité, à l'aide des catégories posées par G. Genette, permet de renouveler l'approche du rapport entre Actes de Paul et Actes canoniques. A la différence de la critique littéraire classique, qui ne repère pas de dépendance littéraire hors de similitudes verbales ou narratives, l'« hypertextualité » désigne un phénomène de relecture dans lequel un texte-source est recomposé et réinterprété au sein d'un écrit second. Grâce à cette catégorie, cette contribution rend compte du jeu dialectique de parenté et de divergence que l'on observe entre les Actes de Paul et les Actes de Luc. La recomposition de la biographie de Paul dans les Actes de Paul a usé de créativité, elle a puisé dans l'imaginaire chrétien, mais elle s'est aussi servie de traditions préservées dans la suivance de l'apôtre.

Les Actes de Paul. Un portrait inhabituel de l'apôtre

(Résumé de l'ouvrage) L'intérêt est vif aujourd'hui pour cette littérature proche de la Bible, faite d' évangiles, d' actes des apôtres et d' apocalypses non retenus dans le canon. Pourquoi ces textes apocryphes, qui ont souvent pour objet des événements évoqués ou des personnages mentionnés dans la Bible, ont-ils été mis à l' écart et largement oubliés dans le passé ? Ont-ils été écrits pour concurrencer les livres du Nouveau Testament ? Quel message religieux véhiculaient-ils ? Il accueille également un essai inédit sur l'Evangile de Judas, où est évoquée notamment la filière gnostique à laquelle se rattache cet évangile apocryphe; la trahison de Jésus y est interprétée comme un mystère libérant par la mort le Jésus spirituel.

Factors conditioning the habitat and the density of Biomphalaria tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835) in an isolated schistosomiasis focus in Rio de Janeiro city

The present work was carried out in a watercress garden in Alto da Boa Vista, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The investigation was carried out in two phases. The first one (1985-86) involved the sampling of Biomphalaria tenegophila in two areas to determine its relative populational densities. The results showed that the populations presented similar densities and dynamics. The second phase (1988-89) involved the study of the influence of some environmental factors on the establishment of B. tenagophila in watercress garden. Two factors were identified as responsible for the establishment of B. tenagophila in the garden: (1) the quality of the water entering the irrigation system, to which domestic sewage is added, and (2) alterations in the nature of the substrate, due to inadequate fertilization techniques, which employ organic matter from adjacent pigsties. Aquatic plants and hydrological parameters of the irrigation system were subsidiary factors to the establishment of B. tenagophila in the garden.

L'apôtre Paul est l'enfant terrible du christianisme. Esprit doctrinaire, conservateur rugueux, antiféministe, dit-on. L'Occident chrétien n'en finit pas de régler ses comptes avec lui. Et l'on se console en se rabattant sur les évangiles, tellement plus simples que les épîtres... Paul aurait-il donc troqué la pure religion du coeur enseignée par Jésus contre un système doctrinal complexe et tortueux ? Et pourtant, sans son génie à formuler les vérités fondamentales de la foi nouvelle, le christianisme ne serait resté qu'une secte obscure. Qu'avaient été en fait ses liens avec Jésus dont il parle si peu ? Est-il vrai que, ex-pharisien, renégat du judaïsme, il a conduit juifs et chrétiens à la rupture ? Quelle fut cette expérience fulgurante qu'on appelle sa " conversion " sur le chemin de Damas ? Dans un monde où revient, lancinante, la question du sens de la vie et de la dignité humaine, sa découverte d'un Dieu renversant qui nous accueille indépendamment de nos qualités prend une extraordinaire actualité. Il était indispensable d'offrir au grand public un accès direct à l'oeuvre fondatrice de Paul.

Use of isozyme patterns in the identification of Biomphalaria tenagophila (D'Orbigny, 1835) and B. occidentalis (Paraense, 1981) (Gastropoda: Planorbidae)

Two sibling species of Biomphalaria, B. tenagophila and B. occidentalis were identified using isozyme patterns obtained by horizontal gel electrophoresis. Six diagnostic enzymatic loci were identified in digestive gland homogenates. The results enable us to distinguish the species, calculate the Nei's coefficient of genetic similarity, and provide a basis for making inferences about the pattern of these two planorbid species colonization and distribution.

Neotropical planorbid snails with apertural lamellae: I. Biomphalaria helophila (Orbigny, 1835)

A definition of Biomphalaria helophila (Orbigny, 1835) is presented, based on examination of the shell and reproductive system of topotypic specimens and extended to a number of samples from other localities. The following nominal species and subspecies, collected from type localities, proved junior synonyms of B. helophila: Planorbis albicans Pfeiffer, 1839; Planorbis dentatus Gould, 1844; Planorbis dentiferus CB Adams, 1845; Planorbis dentiferus edentatus CB Adams, 1851; Planorbis dentiens Morelet, 1849; Planorbula dentiens edentula Fischer & Crosse, 1880; Planorbis stagnicola Morelet, 1851; and Tropicorbis shimeki FC Baker, 1945. B. helophila was also identified in samples from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Barbados.

Description of Pythonella scleruri n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from a Brazilian Bird Rufous-Breasted-Leaftosser Sclerurus scansor, 1835 (Passeriformes: Furnariidae)

Coccidian oocysts containing 16 sporocysts with 4 sporozoites in each were observed in a faecal sample from Sclerurus scansor collected in the Itatiaia National Park, southeastern region of Brazil. The oocysts are characterized by ellipsoidal shape measuring 42.5 x 32.8 mm, with smooth, thick double-layered wall of a greenish-orange colour. An oocyst residuum of numerous scattered granules among the sporocysts in sporulated ones; 16 round sporocysts, averaging 10.5 x 10 mm each containing four elongated sporozoites; presence of residuum; absence of Stieda body. The presently described coccidian, recorded for the first time in birds, is a new species named P. scleruri.
