Leafcutter ants of the genus Atta Fabricius are serious agricultural pests. Morphological studies of immature stages within this group are few, and the data provided for species of considerable importance are usually incomplete. In this study, the immatures of Atta sexdens Linnaeus are described and compared using light and scanning electron microscopy. Only specimens from founding stage colonies (i.e., lacking adult workers) were used. The existence of four larval instars was estimated by a frequency plot of maximum head widths, and the larvae of different instars differed from each other mainly by their bodily dimensions. Worker larvae belonged to two distinct morphological castes: (1) gardeners and nurses and (2) within-nest generalists. The worker larvae described in this study differed from a previous description of the same species by the following traits: the existence of a genal lobe, the number of clypeal hairs, the presence of two hairs on the ninth abdominal somite, the presence of hairs on the anterior surface of the labrum, and the shape of the maxillary palpus. This study provides a comparative analysis of immature stages of A. sexdens that may be relevant to future morphological and biological studies of the Attini. Microsc. Res. Tech. 75:10591065, 2012. Trigona hypogea, T. crassipes, and T. necrophaga are obligate necrophagous bees that differ from the majority of bees by using animal material instead of pollen as a protein resource. Since T. hypogea does not store protein in cerumen pots, it was thought that glandular secretions were its only larval protein source. This is in contrast to T. necrophaga which stores a yellowish proteinaceous jelly in the pots. Our results show that the larval food of T. hypogea has a higher protein content than the food stored in the pots and that it presents an electrophoretical protein pattern similar to that of the hypopharyngeal gland, indicating that workers add glandular secretions to the larval food while provisioning the brood cells. Thus, it can be suggested that T. hypogea has a provisioning behavior similar to other Meliponinae. The presence of several bands of proteins in the food stored in the pots shows that this species stores carrion mixed with honey in storage pots. Morphological data suggest that both larvae and adults make use of the same foodstuffs. These results also suggest that T. hypogea is more similar to other necrophagous species than it is to T. necrophaga (a more specialized bee).

ObjectiveTo compare the efficacy of Papanicolaou, hematoxylin-eosin (H-E), Leishman and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining for Cytologic diagnosis of oral lesions.Study DesignPatients from the Discipline of Stomatology, Sao Jose dos Campos Dental School, from the wards of Hospital Heliopolis and from the dentistry outpatient clinic of the University Hospital, University of São Paulo Medical School, with the following diseases, were selected: erythematous candidiasis (n = 9), pseudomembranous candidiasis (n = 10), squamous cell carcinoma In = 19), herpes simplex (n = 8), paracoccidioidomycosis In = 8) and pemphigus vulgaris (n = 1).ResultsThe different staining methods were compared regarding the quality of definition of cytoplasmic and nuclear morphologic characteristics and the identification of bacteria, fungi, inflammatory cells and secretions. Papanicolaou and H-E staining were considered better methods. In cases of fungal infections, PAS staining is useful and should be applied as a complementary method.ConclusionWithin the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the cytologic diagnosis of oral lesions along with different staining methods is a useful tool for oral diagnosis. Information about orthodontic movement of teeth with hypercementosis is scarce. As cementum deposition continues to occur, cementum is expected to change the shape of the root and apex over time, but this has not yet been demonstrated. Nor has it ever been established whether it increases or decreases the prevalence of root resorption during orthodontic treatment. The unique biological function of the interconnected network of cementocytes may play a role in orthodontic movement and its associated root resorptions, but no research has ever been conducted on the topic. Unlike cementum thickness and hypercementosis, root and apex shape has not yet been related to patient age. A study of the precise difference between increased cementum thickness and hypercementosis is warranted. Hypercementosis refers to excessive cementum formation above and beyond the extent necessary to fulfill its normal functions, resulting in abnormal thickening with macroscopic changes in the tooth root, which may require the delivery of forces that are different from conventional mechanics in their intensity, direction and distribution. What are the unique features and specificities involved in moving teeth that present with hypercementosis? Bodily movements would be expected to occur, since inclination might prove difficult to achieve, but would the root resorption index be higher or lower?

Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus, 1781) midgut is internally lined by an epithelium of polytenic cells, some low others prismatic with well developed brush border. Their apical portion are enlarged by secretory vesicles, forming button-like structures that are pinched off to the lumen, some accompained by the nucleus characterizing apocrine and holocrine secretions. This epithelium is gradually renewed by small, non polytenic regenerative cells, found scattered at its basal portion. At the end of the third instar the metamorphosis begins. The epithelial cells present signs of degeneration and at the first day of pupation the regenerative cells increase in number. By the 5th day of pupation these regenerative cells, besides being increased in number, differentiate themselves into two layers: one similar to the dense conective tissue that sustainning the larval epithelium is pinched off to the midgut lumen forming the yellow bodies; the other, develops right under it as the imaginal epitelium. The disorganized muscles bundles of the midgut wall, are invaded by phagocytes. At the end of pupation the midgut has a low prismatic epithelium with brush-border. In the adult, the torax portion of the midgut has prismatic homogeneously basophilic epithelium while in the abdominal portion the epithelium is made of high prismatic cells full of small vacuoles. The larval midgut epithelium suffers programmed cell death non compatible with apoptose. During the metamorphosis the midgut lenght diminishes from 31mm in the larva to 14mm in the adult.

Fistulous wither secretions from three horses were tested by the plate agglutination (PAT), tube agglutination (SAT), buffered plate-Rose Bengal (RBPT) and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) tests, comparatively with standard agglutination tests. In the modified tests, titers were increased in the PAT, SAT and 2-ME tests and positive reaction was observed in RBPT. Brucella abortus was isolated from the secretion of fistulous withers collected from one animal. These results suggest that the modified tests may be used as alternative tests to diagnose brucellosis in horses with fistulous withers.

Dentre as inúmeras patologias que acometem os eqüinos jovens, as úlceras gástricas situam-se como uma das mais importantes. MURRAY et al. (1987) trabalhando com potros clinicamente normais, constatou uma prevalência de úlceras da ordem de 51%. O mesmo autor realizando gastroscopia em 45 equinos com idade entre 1 e 24 anos, observou a presença de úlceras em 93% dos animais (MURRAY, 1988). de etiologia não completamente definida, acredita-se que inúmeros fatores estejam envolvidos na gênese das úlceras gastroduodenais, sendo o estresse um dos mais importantes. Um desequilíbrio entre os fatores de agressão e proteção da mucosa gástrica é sugerido, onde uma vez ocorrendo o predomínio dos fatores de agressão, a formação das úlceras estaria determinada. de acordo com o tipo, presença ou ausência de sinais clínicos, localização das lesões na mucosa gástrica e possíveis complicações de sua ocorrência, quatro síndromes clínicas são reconhecidas em potros: 1) úlceras assintomáticas ou silenciosas; 2) úlceras sintomáticas ou ativas; 3) úlceras perfuradas e, 4) obstrução gástrica ou duodenal. O diagnóstico deve ser baseado na história clínica, sinais clínicos, resposta à terapia e principalmente nos achados do exame gastroscópico. O tratamento pode ser feito utilizando-se drogas inibidoras da secreção ácida, protetores de mucosas, anti-ácidos, análogos da prostaglandina e estimulantes de motilidade intestinal. Quando indicado emprega-se o tratamento cirúrgico.

O presente trabalho descreve a detecção de células infectadas em aspirados de medula óssea de cães experimentalmente infectados com uma amostra brasileira de Ehrlichia canis. Os cães foram monitorados duas vezes por dia através de avaliação clínica e exames de esfregaços de sangue periférico. A cada três dias, amostras de sangue foram coletadas para contagem celular. Semanalmente foram feitas punções de medula óssea para exame microscópico direto do material aspirado e coleta de sangue para exames sorológicos através da reação de imunofluorescência indireta. Os sinais clínicos observados foram febre, membranas pálidas, linfadenopatias, secreções nasais serosas e acentuada perda de peso. As alterações hematológicas incluíram anemia normocítica normocrômica, redução de neutrófilos e linfócitos e trombocitopenia. Poucas células infectadas com E. canis foram observadas em esfregaços sanguíneos, entretanto várias formas de desenvolvimento de E. canis foram visualizadas em aspirados de medula óssea 15 dias após a infecção.

Neste artigo tratamos das análises do filósofo Maurice Merleau-Ponty acerca das teorias da psicogênese de Henri Wallon. Focalizamos os cursos que Merleau-Ponty dedicara à psicologia da criança entre 1949 e 1952. Para o filósofo, ao longo da psicogênese, a distinção do indivíduo em relação ao mundo e a outrem jamais é terminada. A infância jamais é liquidada radicalmente, pelo simples fato de que não abandonamos nossa condição corporal, nosso poder de retomar as condutas e expressões fisionômicas dos outros e das coisas. Merleau-Ponty encontra indicações neste sentido nas teorias de Wallon, principalmente nos conceitos de sociabilidade sincrética e de ultracoisas.

Changes in Ca-45 uptake and insulin secretion in response to glucose, leucine, and arginine were measured in isolated islets derived from 4-week-old rats born of mothers maintained with normal protein (NP, 17%) or low protein (LP, 6%) diet during pregnancy and lactation. Glucose provoked a dose-dependent stimulation of insulin secretion in both groups of islets, with basal (2.8 mmol/L glucose) and maximal release (27.7 mmol/L glucose) significantly reduced in LP compared with NP islets. In the LP group the concentration-response curve to glucose was shifted to the right compared with the NP group, with the half-maximal response occurring at 16.9 and 13.3 mmol/L glucose, respectively. In LP islets, glucose-induced first and second phases of insulin secretions were drastically reduced. In addition, insulin response to individual amino acids, or in association with glucose, was also significantly reduced in the LP group compared with NP islets. Finally, in LP islets the Ca-45 uptake after 5 minutes or 90 minutes of incubation (which reflect mainly the entry and retention, respectively, of Ca2+), was lower than in NP islets. These data indicate that in malnourished rats both initial and sustained phases of insulin secretion in response to glucose were reduced. This poor secretory response to nutrients seems to be the consequence of an altered Ca2+ handling by malnourished islet cells. (J. Nutr. Biochem. 10:37-43, 1999) (C) Elsevier B.V. 1999. Ants in the tribe Cephalotini are exceptional in that they maintain microorganisms in their digestive tract. To understand what these microorganisms mean to the ants, we observed the feeding habits of Cephalotes pusillus and Cephalotes atratus, finding that in nature they feed on extrafloral nectars, homopteran secretions, and bird droppings. Feeding the antibiotic kanamycin to colonies of C. pusillus in the laboratory kills them. Ants desiccate or starve rather than feed on liquids to which the antibiotics gentamycin and netilmycin have been added, but feed and survive on liquids containing nystatin, penicillin, and ampicillin. We identified over 10 microorganisms from the intestine of C. pusillus with different antibiotic-resistance patterns. The bacteria are from the genera Corynebacterium, Brevibacterium, Sphingobacterium, Ochrobactrum, Myroides, Brevundimonas, Alcaligenes, Stenotrophomonas, Moraxella, and Pseudomonas. We hypothesize that the microorganisms provide nutrients to the ants by synthesizing amino acids from carbohydrates and nitrates. We do not know whether the ants collect the bacteria from the environment, but they transmit them to their young. They culture them in their digestive tract, eventually feeding on them.
