Henry Roth collection, 1959, 1992-1999.

The bulk of the collection consists of manuscripts by Roth of the first two volumes in his Mercy of a Rude Stream series. The manuscripts include editing notes by Roth and others. Several items of memorabilia are also included in the collection.

Antisemitic literature collection.

The antisemitic literature collection contains publications and illustrations related primarily to the subject of antisemitism in the United States in the twentieth century. The bulk of the materials are in English and in good condition. The materials were collected over several decades primarily by Nathan Kaganoff, librarian of the American Jewish Historical Society.

Franks family papers, 1711-1821, [1965-1968].

Contains business correspondence, accounts and documents relating to Jacob Franks of New York, his two sons, Moses and David, a nephew, Isaac, and a John Franks of Halifax, possibly a member of the family.

Louis Lipsky papers 1898-1976

Consists of speeches, memoranda, correspondence, publications, clippings and ephemera pertaining to the life and career of a prominent American Zionist.

Uriah P. Levy collection undated, 1787-1948, 1959, 1961, 1985, 2005.

Contains the notebook and correspondence of Abram Kanof relating to the naval career and activities of Uriah P. Levy; the correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and a manuscript paper of Isaac Markens pertaining to the alleged claim that Levy was instrumental in abolishing flogging in the Navy; personal documents including a letter to Captain E.A.F. Lavalette concerning the behavior of officers under Levy's command as commodore of the Mediterranean fleet (1859), a photostatic copy of his will and the inventory of his estate (1862), and published material by and about Uriah Phillips Levy including a bound typewritten copy of "Record of Naval Court of Inquiry, 1857;" An essay on flogging in the Navy, 1849; Memorial of Uriah P. Levy, ... 1855; an original copy of a Manual of rules for men-of-war by Captain U.P. Levy, 1862; and Monticello and its preservation, since Jefferson's death, 1862-1902, by George Alfred Townsend. Also contains the halitza of Virginia Lopez Levy, widow of Uriah P. Levy, 1866, signed by J.J. Lyons; copies of letters of Michael Levy to Henry Deering and Dudley Woolridge, 1787-1788, and a published copy of The defense of Captain Jonas P. Levy. Gift, in part, of the Elsie O. and Philip D. Myer S. Isaacs collection undated, 1844, 1851-1925

Contains correspondence and newspaper clippings relating to the centennial birthday celebration of and memorial services for Sir Moses Montefiore; correspondence consists primarily of replies to a circular advocating the holding of memorial services issued by the Board of Delegates on Civil and Religious Rights from congregations in Buffalo, Charleston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Detroit. Contains also correspondence relating to the activities of the Alliance Israelite Universelle on behalf of Palestine and the Jews in the Balkan States and Morocco and to the establishment of United States committees for the Alliance and the raising of funds, including correspondence with H. Pereira Mendes, Henry S. Jacobs, John Hay, and Adolphe Cremieux as well as letters from Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Galveston, Minneapolis, Mobile, Rochester, St. Louis, and San Francisco. Also contains extensive correspondence concerning anti-semitism in Russia, aid to Jewish immigrants, and Jewish agricultural colonies in the United States, with letters from James G. Blaine, Manuel Augustus Kursheedt, Sabato Morais, Charles Nathan, Hirsch Leib Sabsovich, (Isaac N.?) Seligman and Judah Wechsler, among others. Also contains newspaper clippings and other items relating to Jewish life during the late 19th century and articles and memorabilia about various members of the Isaacs family.

Henry Roth papers undated, 1918-1995

Papers include a large number of journals and notebooks, hundreds of fan letters, general correspondence, manuscripts by and about Roth, and publications by and about Roth. Papers also include various editions of his works and several annotated volumes of his personal reference library. Topical files contain photographs and items reflecting his interests and personal history.

SIR Analysis and Interference Cancellation in Uplink OFDMA with Large Carrier Frequency/Timing Offsets

In uplink OFDMA, carrier frequency offsets (CFO) and/or timing offsets (TO) of other users with respect to a desired user can cause multiuser interference (MUI). In practical uplink OFDMA systems (e.g., IEEE 802.16e standard), effect of this MUI is made acceptably small by requiring that frequency/timing alignment be achieved at the receiver with high precision (e.g., CFO must be within 1 % of the subcarrier spacing and TO must be within 1/8th of the cyclic prefix duration in IEEE 802.16e), which is realized using complex closed-loop frequency/timing correction between the transmitter and the receiver. An alternate open-loop approach to handle the MUI induced by large CFOs and TOs is to employ interference cancellation techniques at the receiver. In this paper, we first analytically characterize the degradation in the average output signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) due to the combined effect of large CFOs and TOs in uplink OFDMA. We then propose a parallel interference canceller (PIC) for the mitigation of interference due to CFOs and TOs in this system. We show that the proposed PIC effectively mitigates the performance loss due to CFO/TO induced interference in uplink OFDMA.

Henry Biaudet, Liisi Karttunen and Finnish Historical Research in Rome in the Early Twentieth Century This study traces the scholarly endeavours of Henry Biaudet (1870 1915) and Liisi Karttunen (1880 1957) and "La mission historique finlandaise à Rome" which they founded in 1909. They are forgotten in Finnish historiography, but remain internationally renowned for their contribution to the nunciature studies. By investigating their historical work on the Counter- Reformation era, their roles in the scientific communities of Helsinki and Rome as well as the intersection of politics and science in their scholarly practices the study explores the nature of historical research in general at the turn of the twentieth century. The work covers fields such as historiography, university history and the political use of history. Methodologically the research is based on the analysis and contextualization of published and unpublished sources (e.g. correspondences, university records, scholarly publications and reviews in academic journals). Henry Biaudet criticized the previous research on the Nordic Counter-Reformation for its narrow national scope and sources. He sought out a new approach, including the use of sources in archives all over Europe and the inclusion of the Catholic viewpoint. Accordingly, Biaudet and Karttunen searched for records in archives in Southern Europe. Their unorthodox interpretations were denounced in Finland since the picture they gave of late sixteenth-century Sweden was too different from the national narrative. Moreover, Finnish national identity was firmly rooted in Protestantism, and questioning the benevolence of the Reformation and its main actors was considered as an attack not only against historical truth but also national values. The comparison between Biaudet s and Karttunen s arguments and the accepted narrative in Finland shows how traditional interpretations of the Nordic Reformation were influenced by the Lutheran ethos and European anticlerical rhetoric. Historians have recently paid substantial attention to the political use of history, usually focusing on politicized constructions of the national past. This study shows how research that met the criteria of modern historiography also served political purposes. Conducting research in an international community of historians and publishing ambitious scholarly studies that interested an international audience were ways to create a positive image of Finland abroad. These were not uniquely Finnish ideas but rather ideas shared by the international community of historians in Rome. In this context, scientific pursuits were given a clear political meaning. This enhances our understanding of nineteenth-century historiography being firmly rooted between science and politics.

Performance of cellular CDMA with voice/data traffic with an SIR based admission control

We analyze the performance of an SIR based admission control strategy in cellular CDMA systems with both voice and data traffic. Most studies In the current literature to estimate CDMA system capacity with both voice and data traf-Bc do not take signal-tlFlnterference ratio (SIR) based admission control into account In this paper, we present an analytical approach to evaluate the outage probability for voice trafllc, the average system throughput and the mean delay for data traffic for a volce/data CDMA system which employs an SIR based admission controL We show that for a dataaniy system, an improvement of about 25% In both the Erlang capacity as well as the mean delay performance is achieved with an SIR based admission control as compared to code availability based admission control. For a mixed voice/data srtem with 10 Erlangs of voice traffic, the Lmprovement in the mean delay performance for data Is about 40%.Ah, for a mean delay of 50 ms with 10 Erlangs voice traffic, the data Erlang capacity improves by about 9%.
