Waste oil recycling companies play a very important role in our society. Competition among companies is tough and process optimization is essential for survival. By equipping oil containers with a level monitoring system that periodically reports the level and alerts when it reaches the preset threshold, the oil recycling companies are able to streamline the oil collection process and, thus, reduce the operation costs while maintaining the quality of service. This paper describes the development of this level monitoring system by a team of four students from different engineering backgrounds and nationalities. The team conducted a study of the state of the art, draw marketing and sustainable development plans and, finally, designed and implemented a prototype that continuously measures the container content level and sends an alert message as soon as it reaches the preset capacity.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of common mental disorders in Brazilian adolescent students, according to geographical macro-regions, school type, sex, and age. METHODS We evaluated 74,589 adolescents who participated in the Cardiovascular Risk Study in Adolescents (ERICA), a cross-sectional, national, school-based study conducted in 2013-2014 in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. A self-administered questionnaire and an electronic data collector were employed. The presence of common mental disorders was assessed using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). We estimated prevalence and 95% confidence intervals of common mental disorders by sex, age, and school type, in Brazil and in the macro-regions, considering the sample design. RESULTS The prevalence of common mental disorders was of 30.0% (95%CI 29.2-30.8), being higher among girls (38.4%; 95%CI 37.1-39.7) when compared to boys (21.6%; 95%CI 20.5-22.8), and among adolescents who were from 15 to 17 years old (33.6%; 95%CI 32.2-35.0) compared to those aged between 12 and 14 years (26.7%; 95%CI 25.8-27.6). The prevalence of common mental disorders increased with age for both sexes, always higher in girls (ranging from 28.1% at 12 years to 44.1% at 17 years) than in boys (ranging from 18.5% at 12 years to 27.7% at 17 years). We did not observe any significant difference by macro-region or school type. Stratified analyses showed higher prevalence of common mental disorders among girls aged from 15 to 17 years of private schools in the North region (53.1; 95%CI 46.8-59.4). CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence of common mental disorders among adolescents and the fact that the symptoms are often vague mean these disorders are not so easily identified by school administrators or even by health services. The results of this study can help the proposition of more specific prevention and control measures, focused on highest risk subgroups.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe food and macronutrient intake profile and estimate the prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake of Brazilian adolescents. METHODS Data from 71,791 adolescents aged from 12 to 17 years were evaluated in the 2013-2014 Brazilian Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA). Food intake was estimated using 24-hour dietary recall (24-HDR). A second 24-HDR was collected in a subsample of the adolescents to estimate within-person variability and calculate the usual individual intake. The prevalence of food/food group intake reported by the adolescents was also estimated. For sodium, the prevalence of inadequate intake was estimated based on the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL). The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) method used as cutoff was applied to estimate the prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake. All the analyses were stratified according to sex, age group and Brazilian macro-regions. All statistical analyses accounted for the sample weight and the complex sampling design. RESULTS Rice, beans and other legume, juice and fruit drinks, breads and meat were the most consumed foods among the adolescents. The average energy intake ranged from 2,036 kcal (girls aged from 12 to 13 years) to 2,582 kcal (boy aged from14 to 17 years). Saturated fat and free sugar intake were above the maximum limit recommended (< 10.0%). Vitamins A and E, and calcium were the micronutrients with the highest prevalence of inadequate intake (> 50.0%). Sodium intake was above the UL for more than 80.0% of the adolescents. CONCLUSIONS The diets of Brazilian adolescents were characterized by the intake of traditional Brazilian food, such as rice and beans, as well as by high intake of sugar through sweetened beverages and processed foods. This food pattern was associated with an excessive intake of sodium, saturated fatty acids and free sugar.

A presente comunicação irá incidir numa investigação realizada ao longo do ano letivo de 2013/2014, no âmbito da unidade curricular “Prática de Ensino Supervisionada II”, do Mestrado em Ensino do 1.º e 2.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, que teve como objetivo a compreensão das estratégias de cálculo mental utilizadas pelos alunos, nas diversas operações, envolvendo números naturais, e o modo como estas se desenvolvem, contemplando as seguintes questões: i) Qual a importância da implementação de uma rotina de cálculo mental?; ii) Que estratégias de cálculo mental usam os alunos?; iii) De que modo podem evoluir essas estratégias?; iv) Qual a importância da discussão oral das estratégias utilizadas? A metodologia seguiu o paradigma interpretativo, assumindo uma natureza qualitativa. Optou-se pela combinação de várias técnicas de recolha de dados: observação, entrevista e análise documental. Foram analisadas as tiras de cálculo mental de duas alunas do 3.º ano ao longo de toda a intervenção e, recorrendo às notas de campo efetuadas durante a partilha de estratégias, foram ainda analisadas as estratégias utilizadas pela turma no início, meio e fim da implementação. Por último, foi aplicada uma entrevista a essas duas alunas, a qual permitiu a identificação das estratégias utilizadas, na mesma tira, por cada uma das estudantes.

Portugal is a small economy, with an open domestic market that needs competitive exporters to prosper. Trade fairs are an international promotion tool that can be used by firms when considering export development and expansion. This study identifies and evaluates the critical factors that influenced the decision making process of Portuguese SME’s (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises) managers to participate (or not) in international trade fairs. The results indicate that the firm’s critical decisions factors to select an international trade fair were value for money and the stand (location, typology and size)

The paper presents a study on business micro-location behaviour as well as corresponding factors of influence, conducted in two metropolitan areas, Bucharest-Ilfov (Romania) and Greater Porto (Portugal). By business micro-location we refer to a specific site such as a building or facility, accommodating a business within a small, compact geographical area (e.g. metropolitan area). At this geographical scale, the macroeconomic layer factors were excluded, applicable when discern between regions or countries. The factors derived from location theory and previous empirical studies were surveyed, completing a cross-sectional analysis in order to find out the specific weights of the location factors and preferences, by region and by industry. Based on already established firms’ feedback on location, the specific weights were granted by each industry to the main location factors, types of areas, and types of accommodation facilities. The authors also suggested a model to integrate these results into a Geographical Information System (GIS).

Resumo secção I – Prática Pedagógica - Este relatório de estágio foi realizado no âmbito da disciplina de Estágio de Ensino Especializado (EEE), do mestrado em Ensino da Música, frequentado na Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML), ramo de especialização – Percussão. O estágio decorreu nas instalações da Academia de Música de Óbidos, no ano letivo 2013/2014, com a orientação do professor de EEE, Richard Buckley. Durante o ano letivo foram lecionadas aulas a três alunos de diferentes idades que estavam inscritos nas turmas de iniciação I (1.º ano), de ensino básico (6.º ano/2.º grau) e de ensino secundário (10.º ano/6.º grau). A primeira secção deste trabalho, designada Prática Pedagógica compreende a descrição da Academia e dos alunos que dela fizeram parte. O presente relatório também expõem as práticas pedagógicas desenvolvidas com os três alunos, que serviram de amostra para o presente estudo, e que retratam o trabalho desenvolvido. Na última parte desta secção é feita uma análise crítica da atividade docente assim como uma pequena conclusão.

The European Project Semester at ISEP (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme addressed to engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities. The students, organized in multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real world multidisciplinary problems, accounting for 30 ECTU. The EPS package, although focused on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). This paper presents the study plan, resources, operation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering education practices and promote the internationalization of ISEP. The results show that the EPS@ISEP students acquire during one semester the scientific, technical and soft competences necessary to propose, design and implement a solution for a multidisciplinary problem.

This paper presents the system developed to promote the rational use of electric energy among consumers and, thus, increase the energy efficiency. The goal is to provide energy consumers with an application that displays the energy consumption/production profiles, sets up consuming ceilings, defines automatic alerts and alarms, compares anonymously consumers with identical energy usage profiles by region and predicts, in the case of non-residential installations, the expected consumption/production values. The resulting distributed system is organized in two main blocks: front-end and back-end. The front-end includes user interface applications for Android mobile devices and Web browsers. The back-end provides data storage and processing functionalities and is installed in a cloud computing platform - the Google App Engine - which provides a standard Web service interface. This option ensures interoperability, scalability and robustness to the system.

This paper reports the development of a B2B platform for the personalization of the publicity transmitted during the program intervals. The platform as a whole must ensure that the intervals are filled with ads compatible with the profile, context and expressed interests of the viewers. The platform acts as an electronic marketplace for advertising agencies (content producer companies) and multimedia content providers (content distribution companies). The companies, once registered at the platform, are represented by agents who negotiate automatically the price of the interval timeslots according to the specified price range and adaptation behaviour. The candidate ads for a given viewer interval are selected through a matching mechanism between ad, viewer and the current context (program being watched) profiles. The overall architecture of the platform consists of a multiagent system organized into three layers consisting of: (i) interface agents that interact with companies; (ii) enterprise agents that model the companies, and (iii) delegate agents that negotiate a specific ad or interval. The negotiation follows a variant of the Iterated Contract Net Interaction Protocol (ICNIP) and is based on the price/s offered by the advertising agencies to occupy the viewer’s interval.

Resumo I (Prática Pedagógica) - A Secção I - Prática Pedagógica - refere-se ao Estágio que a mestranda realizou no Conservatório de Música de Ourém e Fátima durante o ano lectivo 2013-2014. No âmbito das suas funções de docente, a mestranda realizou o estágio com um aluno do I Grau – 5º ano do Regime Articulado, e com um aluno do III Grau - 7º ano do Regime Articulado e assistiu, ainda, às aulas de um aluno do V Grau - 9º ano do Regime Articulado, sob a orientação da professora cooperante, docente de órgão dessa mesma escola. Nesta secção é feita uma breve caracterização da escola onde se realizou o estágio bem como dos alunos envolvidos no estágio. Por último, são mencionadas as práticas educativas desenvolvidas, os objectivos gerais para o ano lectivo, os métodos utilizados, os objectivos pedagógicos implícitos para cada período e, a finalizar, é apresentada uma análise crítica da actividade docente.

Esta tese descreve um projeto desenvolvido na sua maioria durante o segundo semestre do ano letivo 2013/2014 nas instalações da Bosch Security Systems ST em Ovar, uma empresa do Grupo Bosch. Este projeto resultou de uma cooperação existente entre a Avans University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) e o Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), bem como entre a fábrica Bosch ST Ovar e o Centro de Desenvolvimento Bosch situado em Eindhoven, Holanda. O objetivo é o estudo dos processos colaborativos de comunicação que se realizam entre a R&D (Research and Development/Centro de Desenvolvimento) e a MP (Manufacturing Plant/Fábrica). O sucesso das organizações empresariais só é possível se se alcançar a satisfação das expectativas do mercado. Assim, para o sucesso de uma empresa, temos de ter em conta a sua eficiência para conseguir obter o máximo rendimento da sua missão, que só é possível através de comunicações e de processos produtivos/serviços que acrescentem valor ao bem que disponibilizam. Tendo sempre em vista este princípio, o Grupo Bosch tem vindo a adotar metodologias com o intuito de eliminar os desperdícios existentes nos seus negócios aumentando o máximo possível os seus rendimentos. O desafio foi encontrar problemas ou dificuldades que levam com que a comunicação não seja realizada eficazmente, o que origina, na maioria dos casos, atrasos nos projetos realizados nesta parceria. Com a orientação do diretor técnico da fábrica e observando o trabalho realizado por 2 MBI’s (Manufacturing Business Interface), iniciou-se a compreensão do meio e os métodos de trabalho da empresa, a forma como é que é feita a parceria com os centros de desenvolvimento, como também as responsabilidades e funções de cada um. O estudo desenvolvido teve como base a metodologia Soft Systems Methodology com envolvimento de um questionário submetido aos colaboradores Bosch, realizando-se no final as sugestões de melhoria. Este relatório apresenta assim o estudo dos processos colaborativos e de comunicação entre a fábrica e o centro de desenvolvimento.

The use of buffers to maintain the pH within a desired range is a very common practice in chemical, biochemical and biological studies. Among them, zwitterionic N-substituted aminosulfonic acids, usually known as Good’s buffers, although widely used, can complex metals and interact with biological systems. The present work reviews, discusses and updates the metal complexation characteristics of thirty one commercially available buffers. In addition, their impact on biological systems is also presented. The influences of these buffers on the results obtained in biological, biochemical and environmental studies, with special focus on their interaction with metal ions, are highlighted and critically reviewed. Using chemical speciation simulations, based on the current knowledge of the metal–buffer stability constants, a proposal of the most adequate buffer to employ for a given metal ion is presented.
