The distribution and speciation of iron was determined along a transect in the eastern Atlantic sector (6°E) of the Southern Ocean during a collaborative Scandinavian/South African Antarctic cruise conducted in late austral summer (December 1997/January 1998). Elevated concentrations of dissolved iron (>0.4 nM) were found at 60°S in the vicinity of the Spring Ice Edge (SIE) in tandem with a phytoplankton bloom, chiefly dominated by Phaeocystis sp. This bloom had developed rapidly after the loss of the seasonal sea ice cover. The iron that fuelled this bloom was mostly likely derived from sea ice melt. In the Winter Ice Edge (WIE), around 55°S, dissolved iron concentrations were low (<0.2 nM) and corresponded to lower biological productivity, biomass. In the Antarctic Polar Front, at approximately 50°S, a vertical profile of dissolved iron showed low concentrations (<0.2 nM); however, a surface survey showed higher concentrations (1-3 nM), and considerable patchiness in this dynamic frontal region. The chemical speciation of iron was dominated by organic complexation throughout the study region. Organic iron-complexing ligands ([L]) ranged from 0.9 to 3.0 nM Fe equivalents, with complex stability log K'(FeL) = 21.4-23.5. Estimated concentrations of inorganic iron (Fe') ranged from 0.03 to 0.79 pM, with the highest values found in the Phaeocystis bloom in the SIE. A vertical profile of iron-complexing ligands in the WIE showed a maximum consistent with a biological source for ligand production and near surface minimum possibly consistent with loss via photodecomposition. This work further confirms the role iron that has in the Southern Ocean in limiting primary productivity.

AMS-14C dated sediment cores from the Ob and Yenisei estuaries and the adjacent inner Kara Sea were investigated to determine the siliclastic and organic carbon fluxes and their relationship to paleoenvironmental changes. The variability of sediment fluxes during Holocene times is related to the post-glacial sea-level rise and changes in river discharge and coastal erosion input. Whereas during the late/middle Holocene most of the terrigenous sediments were deposited in the estuaries and the areas directly off the estuaries, huge amounts of sediments accumulated on the Kara Sea shelf farther north during the early Holocene before about 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. The maximum accumulation at that time is related to the lowered sea level, increased coastal erosion, and increased river discharge due to the final stage of mountain deglaciation of the Putoran Massif. Increased supply of Yenisei-derived material indicated by peak magnetic susceptibility values probably occurred in climate-related pulses culminating near 11, 10, and 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. As sea level rose, the main Holocene depocenter migrated southward. Based on hydrogen index values and n-alkanes, the organic matter is predominantly of terrigenous origin. Maximum accumulation rates of 1.5 to more than 6 g/cm2/y occurred in the early Holocene sediments, suggesting more humid climatic conditions with an increased vegetation cover in the source area at that time. In general, high organic carbon accumulation rates characterize the estuaries and the inner Kara Sea as important sink for terrigenous organic carbon. A high-resolution record of Holocene variability of magnetic susceptibility (MS) in an AMS14C-dated sediment core from the northern Yenisei estuary may indicate natural variability of Arctic climate change and river discharge on a centennial to millenial time scale. Short-term maxima in MS probably related to warmer climate, enhanced precipitation, intensified weathering/erosion and increased river discharge, display a frequency of about 300 to 700 years.

Numerous studies have evaluated the dynamics of Arctic tundra vegetation throughout the past few decades, using remotely sensed proxies of vegetation, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). While extremely useful, these coarse-scale satellite-derived measurements give us minimal information with regard to how these changes are being expressed on the ground, in terms of tundra structure and function. In this analysis, we used a strong regression model between NDVI and aboveground tundra phytomass, developed from extensive field-harvested measurements of vegetation biomass, to estimate the biomass dynamics of the circumpolar Arctic tundra over the period of continuous satellite records (1982-2010). We found that the southernmost tundra subzones (C-E) dominate the increases in biomass, ranging from 20 to 26%, although there was a high degree of heterogeneity across regions, floristic provinces, and vegetation types. The estimated increase in carbon of the aboveground live vegetation of 0.40 Pg C over the past three decades is substantial, although quite small relative to anthropogenic C emissions. However, a 19.8% average increase in aboveground biomass has major implications for nearly all aspects of tundra ecosystems including hydrology, active layer depths, permafrost regimes, wildlife and human use of Arctic landscapes. While spatially extensive on-the-ground measurements of tundra biomass were conducted in the development of this analysis, validation is still impossible without more repeated, long-term monitoring of Arctic tundra biomass in the field.

A high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) reconstruction of the western Mediterranean was accomplished using two independent, algae-based molecular organic proxies, i.e. the UK'37 index based on long-chain unsaturated ketones and the novel long-chain diol index (LDI) based on the relative abundances of C28 and C30 1,13- and 1,15-diols. Two marine records, from the western and eastern Alboran Sea basin, spanning the last 14 and 20 kyr, respectively, were studied. Results from the surface sediments suggest that the two proxies presently reflect seasons with similar SST, or simply annual mean SST. Both proxy records reveal the transition from the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene in the eastern Alboran Sea with an SST increase of ca. 7 °C for UK'37 and 9 °C for LDI. Minimum SSTs (10-12 °C) are reached at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum and during the last Heinrich event with a subsequent rapid SST increase in LDI-SST towards the beginning of the Bölling period (20 °C), while UK'37-SST remains constantly low (~12 °C). The Bölling-Alleröd is characterized by a rapid increase and subsequent decrease in UK'37-SST, while the LDI-SST decrease continuously. Short-term fluctuations in UK'37-SST are probably related to availability of nutrients and seasonal changes. The Younger Dryas is recorded as a short cold interval followed by progressively warmer temperatures. During the Holocene, the general lower UK'37-derived temperature values in the eastern Alboran (by ca. 1.5-2 °C) suggest a southeastward cold water migration by the western Alboran gyre and divergence in the haptophyte blooming season between both basins.

A 6200 year old peat sequence, cored in a volcanic crater on the sub-Antarctic Ile de la Possession (Iles Crozet), has been investigated, based on a multi-proxy approach. The methods applied are macrobotanical (mosses, seeds and fruits) and diatom analyses, complemented by geochemical (Rock-Eval6) and rock magnetic measurements. The chronology of the core is based on 5 radiocarbon dates. When combining all the proxy data the following changes could be inferred. From the onset of the peat formation (6200 cal yr BP) until ca. 5550 cal yr BP, biological production was high and climatic conditions must have been relatively warm. At ca. 5550 cal yr BP a shift to low biological production occurred, lasting until ca. 4600 cal yr BP. During this period the organic matter is well preserved, pointing to a cold and/or wet environment. At ca. 4600 cal yr BP, biological production increased again. From ca. 4600 cal yr BP until ca. 4100 cal yr BP a 'hollow and hummock' micro topography developed at the peat surface, resulting in the presence of a mixture of wetter and drier species in the macrobotanical record. After ca. 4100 cal yr BP, the wet species disappear and a generally drier, acidic bog came into existence. A major shift in all the proxy data is observed at ca. 2800 cal yr BP, pointing to wetter and especially windier climatic conditions on the island probably caused by an intensification and/or latitudinal shift of the southern westerly belt. Caused by a stronger wind regime, erosion of the peat surface occurred at that time and a lake was formed in the peat deposits of the crater, which is still present today.

New K-Ar age determinations of basalt samples from three drill holes and outcrops on the Franz Josef Land suggest that flood volcanism throughout the archipelago fits in a very narrow age interval (116±5 Ma). For 95% of the samples we studied, age scatter is within analytical uncertainty. New data on basaltic bulk-rock, trace element, and REE compositions point to mantle plume affinity for Early Cretaceous magmatism on the Franz Josef Land, which preceded the onset of seafloor spreading in the Canada Basin.

The middle Paleocene through early Eocene long-term gradual warming was superimposed by several transient warming events, such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) and Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2). Both events show evidence for extreme global warming associated with a major injection of carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system, but the mechanisms of carbon injection and many aspects of the environmental response are still poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the concentration and stable carbon isotopic (d13C) composition of several sulfur-bound biomarkers derived from marine photoautotrophs, deposited in the Arctic Ocean at ~85°N, during ETM2. The presence of sulfur-bound biomarkers across this event points toward high primary productivity and anoxic bottom water conditions. The previously reported presence of isorenieratene derivatives indicates euxinic conditions in the photic zone, likely caused by a combination of enhanced primary productivity and salinity stratification. The negative carbon isotope excursion measured at the onset of ETM2 for several biomarkers, ranges between 3 per mil and 4.5 per mil, much larger than the ~1.4 per mil recorded in marine carbonates elsewhere, suggesting substantial enhanced isotopic fractionation by the primary producers likely due to a significant rise in pCO2. In the absence of biogenic carbonates in the ETM2 section of our core we use coeval planktonic d13C from elsewhere to estimate surface water d13C in the Arctic Ocean and then apply the relation between isotopic fractionation and pCO2, originally calibrated for haptophyte alkenones, to three selected organic biomarkers (i.e., S-bound phytane, C35 hopane, and a C25 highly branched isoprenoid). This yields pCO2 values potentially in the range of four times preindustrial levels. However, these estimates are uncertain because of a lack of knowledge on the importance of pCO2 on photosynthetic isotopic fractionation.

Cryosols are permafrost-affected soils whose genesis is dominated by cryogenic processes, resulting in unique macromorphologies, micromorphologies, thermal characteristics, and physical and chemical properties. In addition, these soils are carbon sinks, storing high amounts of organic carbon collected for thousands of years. In the Canadian soil classification, the Cryosolic Order includes mineral and organic soils that have both cryogenic properties and permafrost within 1 or 2 m of the soil surface. This soil order is divided into Turbic, Static and Organic great groups on the basis of the soil materials (mineral or organic), cryogenic properties and depth to permafrost. The great groups are subdivided into subgroups on the basis of soil development and the resulting diagnostic soil horizons. Cryosols are commonly associated with the presence of ground ice in the subsoil. This causes serious problems when areas containing these soils are used for agriculture and construction projects (such as roads, town sites and airstrips). Therefore, where Cryosols have high ice content, it is especially important either to avoid these activities or to use farming and construction methods that maintain the negative thermal balance.

Despite the different scientific objectives of Legs 185 and 191, the sedimentary sections recovered from Sites 1149 and 1179 are the two most complete sections recovered from the northwestern Pacific Basin by either the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) (i.e., Legs 6, 20, 32, and 86) or ODP (i.e., Legs 185 and 191). During Leg 185, a complete sedimentary section (410 m) and an additional 133 m of highly altered volcanic basement were recovered. The Miocene to Pleistocene section (i.e., upper ~150 m) recovered from Site 1149 includes lithostratigraphic Unit I (0-118.2 meters below sea floor [mbsf]) and Subunit IIA (118.2-149.5 mbsf) of Plank, Ludden, Escutia, et al. (2000, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.185.2000) and consists of ash- and biogenic silica- bearing clay, radiolarian-bearing clay, silt-bearing clay, ash-bearing siliceous ooze, and diatomaceous clay, with numerous discrete volcanic ash layers (Plank, Ludden, Escutia, et al., 2000, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.185.2000). During Leg 191, a near-continuous 375-m-thick sedimentary section was recovered in addition to 100 m of basaltic basement. The upper 221.5 m of the sedimentary section at Site 1179 (i.e., within lithostratigraphic Unit I of Kanazawa, Sager, Escutia et al. [2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.191.2001]) consists of upper Miocene to Pleistocene clay- and radiolarian-bearing diatom ooze containing numerous discrete ash layers. The presence of discrete ash layers within the Miocene to Pleistocene sedimentary section at both Site 1149 and 1179 provides a unique opportunity to conduct 40Ar/39Ar ash chronology to refine the excellent magnetostratigraphic records (based on the scale of Berggren et al., 1995) obtained shipboard from both sites (Plank, Ludden, Escutia, et al., 2000, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.185.2000; Kanazawa, Sager, Escutia, et al., 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.191.2001).In this data report we present the analytical results from the 40Ar/39Ar incrementally heated analyses and provide a new combined late Miocene to Pleistocene 40Ar/39Ar and magnetostratigraphic chronology for the northwestern Pacific.

Sediments from Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 615, 617, 618, 619, and 620-623 were subjected to pyrolysis. The sediments are immature with respect to petroleum generation as determined by production index values of less than 0.1 and Tmax values of 460-480°C. The amount of pyrolyzable organic matter was moderately low as compared to typical petroleum source rocks. The immature organic matter present does not appear to contain a significant proportion of woody material as shown by the low gas-generating potential. Typical overbank sediments from Sites 617 and 620 generally show higher P2 values (500-800 µg hydrocarbon per g dry weight sediment) than typical channel-fill sediments from Sites 621 and 622 (P2 = 450-560 µg/g). Tmax for both types of sediment remained very constant (462-468 °C) with a slight elevation (+ 15°C) occurring in samples containing lignite. The highest P2 values occurred in sections described as turbidites. Very low P2 values (about 50 µg/g) occurred in sands. P2 values for shallower sections of basin Sites 618 and 619 tended to be higher (900-1000 µg/g) and decreased in deeper, more terrigenous sections of Site 619. Preliminary experiments indicate that microbiological degradation of sediment organic matter causes a decrease in P2. Pyrolyzable organic matter from lower fan Site 623 appears to increase with depth in two different sediment sequences (40-85 and 95-125 m sub-bottom). Organic matter type, as shown by pyrolysis capillary gas chromatography (GC) patterns, was generally the same throughout the well, with much more scatter occurring in the deepest sections (130-155 m sub-bottom). One major and two minor organic matter types could be recognized in both fan and basin sites drilled on Leg 96.

The efficiency of the biological pump of carbon to the deep ocean depends largely on the biologically mediated export of carbon from the surface ocean and its remineralization with depth. Global satellite studies have primarily focused on chlorophyll concentration and net primary production (NPP) to understand the role of phytoplankton in these processes. Recent satellite retrievals of phytoplankton composition now allow for the size of phytoplankton cells to be considered. Here, we improve understanding of phytoplankton size structure impacts on particle export, remineralization and transfer. Particulate organic carbon (POC) flux observations from sediment traps and 234Th are compiled across the global ocean. Annual climatologies of NPP, percent microplankton, and POC flux at four time series locations and within biogeochemical provinces are constructed, and sinking velocities are calculated to align surface variables with POC flux at depth. Parameters that characterize POC flux vs. depth (export flux ratio, labile fraction, remineralization length scale) are then fit to the aligned dataset. Times of the year dominated by different size compositions are identified and fit separately in regions of the ocean where phytoplankton cell size showed enough dynamic range over the annual cycle. Considering all data together, our findings support the paradigm of high export flux but low transfer efficiency in more productive regions and vice versa for oligotrophic regions. However, when parsing by dominant size class, we find periods dominated by small cells to have both greater export flux and lower transfer efficiency than periods when large cells comprise a greater proportion of the phytoplankton community.

Sediment cores from nine sites along a profile on the Antarctic continental margin off Kapp Norvegia were analysed sedimentologicaly. The carbonate and organic carbon content, grain size distribution, composition of the coarse fraction and clay minerals were determined. d18O- and d13C-isotope ratios were also measured. The distribution of ice rafted debris was determined by a new method. Sedimentation-rates were obtained from 230Th- and 14C-analyses. A segregation into seven different sediment facies was made possible by different sedimentological parameters, which can be attributed to different sedimentation environments and conditions. Thr profile can be divided morphologicaly into shelf, upper continental slope, slope terrace and lower continental slope. The paratill facies is deposited on the shelf during an interglacial phase and consists mainly of ice rafted sediments. A portion of the fine fraction is being carried away by the antarctic coastel current. The sedimentation rate lies between 0 and 3 cm/1000 a. The coarse grained deposits of the upper, relatively steep continental slope, were specified as a rest sediment. Current and gravity sediment transport are responsible for the intensive sorting of ice rafted material coming from the shelf. The fine sediment is carried away by currents while sand and silt are deposited as small turbidites on the slope terrace. The morainic facies only appears at the base of the upper continental slope and defines ice advances, beyond the shelf margin. The facies mainly consists of transported shelf sediments. The interglacial facies, deposited during the interglacial phases on the continental slope, are characterized by high proportions of ice raft, coarse mean grain size, low content of montmorillonite and a carbonate content, which mainly originates from planktonic foraminifera (N. pachyderma). At the central part of the slope the sedimentation rate is at its lowest (2 cm/1000 a) and increases to 3-4 cm/1000 a towards the sea, due to high production of biogenic components and towards the continent due to an increasing input of terrigenous material. Sedimentary conditions during glacial times are depicted in the glacial facies by a low content of ice rafted debris, a lower mean grain size and a high content of montmorillonite. Biogeneous components are absent. The sedimentation rate is generally about 1 cm/1000a. A transition facies is deposited during the transition from glacial to interglacial conditions. Typical for this facies, with a terrigenous composition similar to the interglacial facies, is a high content of radiolaria. The reason for the change of plankton from a siliceous to a carbonacous fauna may have been the changing hydrography caused by the sea ice. The surge facies is deposited at the continental margin under the ice shelf and is a sediment exclusively delivered by currents. With the aid of this facies it was, for the first time possible to prove the existence of Antarctic ice surges, an aspect wh ich has been discussed for the past 20 years.

The book provides an overview of recent data on processes of dispersion and concentration of phosphorus in marine sedimentation. Distribution, chemical and mineral compositions, structure and age of phosphorites occurring on the floor are described. Phosphorites are one of potential mineral resources of the World Ocean. A scheme of multistage-oceanic phosphorite formation is motivated. Modern and pre-Quaternary phosphorite formations in the ocean are paralleled.

A combined study of magnetic parameters of basalt and andesite samples has been carried out in the framework of geological investigations of the Franz Josef Land. This study has included determination of coercivity, saturation magnetization, Curie points, natural remanent magnetization (NRM), and magnetic susceptibility as well as examination of ferromagnetic minerals with a microscope. Data on chemical composition of the rocks have been obtained for all the samples, and radiological ages have been determined for the majority of the rocks. Thermomagnetic curves of the samples have been subdivided into four types depending on composition of ferromagnetic NRM carriers. Data showing multiple changes in the predominant composition of the igneous rocks have been obtained. Each stage of magmatism is characterized by a specific type of the ferromagnetic component in the rocks and, therefore, magnetomineralogical investigations can be used for differentiation and correlation of the igneous rocks.

The basalts in Holes 519A, 522B, and 524 were studied for intensity of natural remanent magnetization, magnetic hysteresis, magnetic susceptibility, stability of isothermal remanence, and thermomagnetic behavior. Some of these properties are sensitive to both the composition and the microstructure of the magnetic minerals, others to composition only. Thus it is possible to separate the two effects and to trace the variation of effective magnetic grain size and degree of alteration within a lithologic unit or over a yet larger distance or time interval. The flow in Hole 519A is highly maghemitized at the top, the degree of maghemitization decreasing with depth in the flow. Effective grain size increases with increasing depth. Electron microprobe analysis of the titanomaghemite grains in these samples provides no support for the leaching out of iron during alteration. The pillows and flows in Hole 522B are distributed among a number of cooling units, and no systematic downhole variations are apparent. The inferred magneto-petrology is consistent with the cooling and alteration history that might be expected within the units. The upper and lower sills in Hole 524 are more uniform and have a larger concentration of well-developed magnetic mineral grains than the pillows and flows in Holes 519A and 522B. Maghemitization appears to have developed from the boundaries of the sills that are in contact with the sediments between the sills.
