Development of a granular sludge with high strength, high biological activity and a narrow settling distribution is necessary for optimal operation of high-rate upflow anaerobic treatment systems. Several studies have compared granules produced from different wastewaters but these have largely been from laboratory-fed reactors or compared granules from full-scale reactors fed similar wastewater types. Though two authors have commented on the inferiority of granules produced by a protein-based feed, the properties of these granules have not been characterised. In this paper, granules from full-scale reactors treating fruit and vegetable cannery effluent, two brewery effluents and a pig abattoir (slaughterhouse) were compared in terms of basic composition, size distribution, density, settling velocity, shear strength, and EPS content. The results supported previous qualitative observations by other researchers that indicate granule properties depend more on wastewater type rather than reactor design or operating conditions such as pre-acidification level. The cannery-fed granules bad excellent shear strength, settling distribution and density. Granules from the two brewery-fed reactors had statistically the same bulk properties, which were still acceptable for upflow applications. The ultrastructure of pecans was investigated using light microscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Specific methodology for the sample preparation of pecans for electron microscopy investigations was developed. Electron microscopy of the ultrastructure of opalescent (discoloration of the interior) and nonopalescent kernels revealed that cellular damage was occurring in opalescent kernels. The damage was due to cell wall and membrane rupture, which accounted for the release of oil throughout the kernel. This rupture is due to the lower level of calcium in the cell membranes of opalescent pecans, as shown by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, making them more susceptible to damage.

Changes in composition during the maturation of Western Schley pecans [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] grown in Australia were investigated. Pecans of different maturity levels were collected at monthly intervals between March and June in. 1999 and 2000 and analyzed for the concentrations of moisture, total lipid, sucrose, raffinose, protein, and the minerals aluminum, boron, calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, phosphorus, sulfur, and zinc. Moisture, total lipid, and calcium contents changed significantly (p < 0.05) with harvest time and maturity, whereas the other components did not. Western Schley pecans grown in Australia should be harvested after the shuck has opened and it is either green or brown in color to maximize total lipid content and quality. This occurred after May 11 in 1999 and after May 17 in 2000.

Drying kinetics of low molecular weight sugars such as fructose, glucose, sucrose and organic acid such as citric acid and high molecular weight carbohydrate such as maltodextrin (DE 6) were determined experimentally using single drop drying experiments as well as predicted numerically by solving the mass and heat transfer equations. The predicted moisture and temperature histories agreed with the experimental ones within 6% average relative (absolute) error and average difference of +/- 1degreesC, respectively. The stickiness histories of these drops were determined experimentally and predicted numerically based on the glass transition temperature (T-g) of surface layer. The model predicted the experimental observations with good accuracy. A nonsticky regime for these materials during spray drying is proposed by simulating a drop, initially 120 mum in diameter, in a spray drying environment.

The effects that four pretreatments (blanching, chilling, freezing, and combined blanching and freezing), used prior to drying, had on the drying rate and quality of bananas were investigated. An untreated sample was used as a control. The bananas were dried at 50 degreesC in a heat pump dehumidifier dryer, using an air velocity of 3.1 m s(-1), until a final moisture content of approximately 25% dry weight basis was attained. While the initial drying rate was highest for the blanched treatment, the two pretreatments involving freezing resulted in the shortest drying times. The blanched sample was most preferred in terms of colour while the frozen samples exhibited extensive browning. The texture and flavour was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in all samples that involved blanching and/or freezing.

Rheological properties of four unprocessed unifloral Australian honeys (heath, tea tree, yapunya, and yellow box) and an artificial honey were analysed at 20degreesC. A model previously used to describe viscosity data of various sugar and sugar mixtures was used to describe the concentration dependence of the viscosity of honey samples with varying moisture contents. The model successfully described the sugar concentration dependence of the unadulterated and medium moisture (70-85% solids) range honey samples.

The sorption properties of yapunyah (Eucalyptus ochropholia) and yellow box (Eucalyptus melliodora) honeys (Australian unifloral honeys) were investigated in a controlled relative humidity (RH) environment at 30degreesC for 71 days. The original water activity of the honeys affected the sorption properties. These two honeys absorbed moisture at and above 67.9% RH and desorbed moisture at and below 51.4% RH. The crystallisation behaviour of tea tree (Melaleuca quinquenervia) and yapunyah honeys was studied during storage at 13 and 23 degreesC. The degree of crystallisation was monitored by measuring the absorbance at 660 and 665 nm using a spectrophotometer. The heat-treated honeys did not show any sign of crystallisation after S months, whereas a seeding with precrystallised honey induced crystallisation of the same honeys. This crystallisation was more rapid at 13 than at 23degreesC. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

We evaluated the effects of various food groups and micronutrients in the diet on survival among women who originally participated in a population-based case-control study of ovarian cancer conducted across 3 Australian states between 1990 and 1993. This analysis included 609 women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer, primarily because there was negligible mortality in women with borderline tumors. The women's usual diet was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Deaths in the cohort were identified using state-based cancer registries and the Australian National Death Index (NDI). Crude 5-year survival probabilities were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier technique, and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained from Cox regression models. After adjusting for important confounding factors, a survival advantage was observed for those who reported higher intake of vegetables in general (HR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.57-0.99, p-value trend 0.01 for the highest third, compared to the lowest third), and cruciferous vegetables in particular (HR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.57-0.98, p-value trend 0.03), and among women in the upper third of intake of vitamin E (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.58-1.01, p-value trend 0.04). Inverse associations were also seen with protein (p-value trend 0.09), red meat (p-value trend 0.06) and white meat (p-value trend 0.07), and modest positive trends (maximum 30% excess) with lactose (p-value trend 0.04), calcium and dairy products. Although much remains to be learned about the influence of nutritional factors after a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, our study suggests the possibility that a diet high in vegetable intake may help improve survival. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a variação das dimensões das fibras e dos vasos da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis com quatro diferentes idades (10, 14, 20 e 25 anos), proveniente de talhões comerciais. A amostragem do material na árvore foi feita através da coleta de três discos, retirados da base e das extremidades das duas primeiras toras, ambas com o comprimento comercial de 3 m. De cada disco, retiraram-se cinco amostras, de dimensões 1,0 x 1,0 x 1,0 cm, tomadas de pontos eqüidistantes, correspondentes a 0; 25; 50; 75; e 100% da seção, no sentido radial medula-casca, fazendo-se a medição das fibras e dos vasos. Verificou-se, em todos os parâmetros, o efeito da idade e da variação radial, no sentido medula-casca, à exceção da largura e do diâmetro do lume das fibras; todos os demais parâmetros apresentaram correlação positiva.

Crambe (Crambe abyssinica) pertence à família Brassicaceae, originário da Etiópia e principalmente destinado à produção de forragem (30 a 32% de proteína bruta). Atualmente, tem sido bastante cultivado visando à extração de óleo vegetal. Com os atuais incentivos à busca de fontes de energias renováveis, o cultivo de crambe vem ganhando papel de destaque na produção de biodiesel por suas diversas vantagens, como: (a) rápido ciclo de vida (colhida em torno de 90 dias); (b) alta produção de biomassa; (c) alta produtividade de sementes (1000 e 1500 kg ha-1); (d) menor custo de produção em relação a outras fontes oleaginosas, como, canola, girassol e soja; (e) um percentual de óleo total na semente entre 32 e 38%, superando, por exemplo, a soja; (f) potencial de fitorremediação, eficiente na descontaminação de arsênio, cromo e outros metais pesados; e (g) elevado percentual de ácido erúcico (50 a 60%) sendo útil na indústria de plástico e lubrificante. Devido aos poucos trabalhos realizados com crambe, abre-se um vasto campo de investigações científicas que tenham como objetivo desenvolver as potencialidades dessa cultura e, consequentemente, melhorar os aspectos agronômicos e tecnológicos para seu emprego na indústria de biodiesel. Nesse contexto, as técnicas de cultivo in vitro foram importantes tanto para a propagação massal, quanto como ferramenta para uma possível aplicação de outras técnicas biotecnológicas, contribuindo para uma produção homogênea, fiel e em larga escala. Portanto, este trabalho teve como objetivo geral avaliar as condições mais favoráveis à germinação, estabelecimento in vitro e micropropagação de Crambe abyssinica Hochst., além de verificar possíveis alterações genéticas e anatômicas, possibilitando a regeneração e produção de plântulas viáveis. Para a germinação e estabecimento in vitro de crambe, as condições mais favoráveis foram em meio B5 ou WPM, na presença ou ausência de pericarpo e na presença de luz. Na micropropagação dessa espécie, uma frequência satisfatória de regeneração de brotos foi obtida a partir de segmentos apicais utilizados como explante em meio contendo 5 μM de BAP (6- benzilaminopurina), e o alongamento foi satisfatório com 1 μM de GA3 (ácido giberélico). Os marcadores moleculares ISSR (Inter-Simples Sequence Repeats) utilizados para a análise da estabilidade genética indicaram que o segmento apical de crambe é um explante confiável para a micropropagação de plantas geneticamente verdadeiras (true-to-tipe), ou seja, mantém a estabilidade genética. As diversas fontes de citocininas e concentrações utilizadas neste trabalho não promoveram mudanças, no sentido de alterar a organização e/ou a espessura em relação ao controle, e as alterações observadas na estrutura e espessura das folhas dos tratamentos de aclimatização prejudicaram o processo de estabelecimento da plântula ex vitro. Contudo, existe a necessidade de um enraizamento e aclimatização eficiente para completa propagação in vitro de crambe. Portanto, este protocolo de regeneração de plantas in vitro de crambe pode ser útil no processo de criação e desenvolvimento de novas cultivares em um tempo mais curto e no melhoramento genético usando explantes apicais.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is the most commonly consumed leaf vegetable in the Brazilian diet, and it is a good source of vitamins and minerals. It is widely grown in the conventional farming system. However, the hydroponic farming system has been gaining importance in the market, wining confidence from consumers, who are becoming increasingly more demanding on food quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of two lettuce cultivars on hydroponic and conventional farming systems for the production of fresh mass (FM) and dry mass (DM), photosynthesis, contents of chlorophyll and anthocyanin. The following two experiments were carried out: hydroponics farming (HF) and conventional farming (CF), performed in protect and unprotect environments, respectively, in Florianópolis, SC. Mimosa Verde cultivar (MV) showed greater fresh mass than Mimosa Roxa (MR), in both farming systems and the two cultivars presented better performance in the hydroponic system (287.7 g MV and 139.1 g MR) than the conventional system (129.7 g MV and 111.8 g MR). Mimosa Verde cultivar presented lower average contents of total chlorophyll (7.7 mg g-¹ FM) than Mimosa Roxa (11.8 mg g-¹FM), and both cultivars displayed higher means for this variable in the hydroponic farming system. Mimosa Roxa presented higher contents of anthocyanin in the conventional system (88.24 mg g-¹ FM) than the ones in the hydroponic system (36.89 mg g-¹ FM). The best results for CO2 net assimilation rate regarded to photosyntheticaly active photon flux density were found in the hydroponic system, for both lettuce cultivars. Variation in the contents of chlorophyll were also found. Those variations were higher in the protected system than in the hydroponic system and contents of anthocyanin were higher in the conventional system.

This paper describes experimental work done towards the search for more profitable and sustainable alternatives regarding biodiesel production, using heterogeneous catalysts instead of the conventional homogenous alkaline catalysts, such as NaOH, KOH or sodium methoxide, for the methanolysis reaction. This experimental work is a first stage on the development and optimization of new solid catalysts, able to produce biodiesel from vegetable oils. The heterogeneous catalytic process has many differences from the currently used in industry homogeneous process. The main advantage is that, it requires lower investment costs, since no need for separation steps of methanol/catalyst, biodiesel/catalyst and glycerine/catalyst. This work resulted in the selection of CaO and CaO modified with Li catalysts, which showed very good catalytic performances with high activity and stability. In fact FAME yields higher than 92% were observed in two consecutive reaction batches without expensive intermediate reactivation procedures. Therefore, those catalysts appear to be suitable for biodiesel production.

Biodiesel is the main alternative to fossil diesel and it may be produced from different feedstocks such as semi-refined vegetable oils, waste frying oils or animal fats. However, these feedstocks usually contain significant amounts of free fatty acids (FFA) that make them inadequate for the direct base catalyzed transesterification reaction (where the FFA content should be lower than 4%). The present work describes a possible method for the pre-treatment of oils with a high content of FFA (20 to 50%) by esterification with glycerol. In order to reduce the FFA content, the reaction between these FFA and an esterification agent is carried out before the transesterification reaction. The reaction kinetics was studied in terms of its main factors such astemperature, % of glycerin excess, % of catalyst used, stirring velocity and type of catalyst used. The results showed that glycerolysis is a promising pretreatment to acidic oils or fats (> 20%) as they led to the production of an intermediary material with a low content of FFA that can be used directly in thetransesterification reaction for the production of biodiesel. Nas últimas décadas, devido ao desenvolvimento económico, e a uma necessidade constante de gerir os recursos energéticos, existe uma necessidade de procurar novas fontes de energia, em particular fontes de energia renováveis. O biodiesel surge assim como uma energia alternativa ao combustível fóssil. Este biocombustível tem ganho uma importância significativa na sociedade moderna. Quimicamente o biodiesel é constituído por ésteres metílicos de ácidos gordos de cadeia longa, derivados de óleos vegetais ou gorduras animais. O principal problema que este enfrenta é a sua susceptibilidade à oxidação, devido ao seu conteúdo de ácidos gordos insaturados, logo existe uma procura constante de soluções que possam solucionar este problema. É necessária a identificação de técnicas e métodos para retardar a seu envelhecimento ao longo do tempo. O objectivo deste trabalho consiste no estudo da estabilidade do biodiesel ao longo do tempo, quando armazenado a diferentes condições de temperatura, superiores às normalmente suportadas pelo biodiesel durante o armazenamento, de modo a acelerar o processo de degradação. As amostras de biodiesel foram sujeitas a duas temperaturas. Uma amostra de biodiesel não estabilizado foi colocada a uma temperatura entre 40 e 50ºC ao longo de 203 dias, e uma outra amostra foi colocada a uma temperatura entre 95º e 105ºC ao longo de 146 dias. Realizaram-se ensaios semanais de modo registar a evolução do envelhecimento do biodiesel. As análises foram efectuadas por espectrofotometria de ultravioleta e visível (UV-VIS) e por espectroscopia de absorção na região do infravermelho (FTIR). No UV-VIS foi possível observar que o aumento de temperatura foi responsável pela aceleração da oxidação do biodiesel que resulta num aumento generalizado da absorvância do biodiesel. Através das análises efectuadas no FTIR verificou-se a formação e aumento da banda dos hidroperóxidos (grupo ROOH) localizada entre 3000 e 3600 cm-1 nos espectros, e igualmente um alargamento na banda dos carbonilos (grupo C=O) entre 1500 e 1900 cm-1. Numa fase posterior testaram-se antioxidantes para retardar o envelhecimento do biodiesel. Os ensaios foram efectuados a uma temperatura entre 95º e 105ºC. Os antioxidantes utilizados foram o galhato de propilo (PG), o galhato de etilo (EG) e o ácido gálhico (AG). Recorreu-se a técnicas como o UV-VIS e o FTIR para o registo dos espectros do biodiesel ao longo do tempo. Através destas técnicas foi possível verificar a influência de antioxidantes na estabilidade oxidativa do biodiesel. O PG foi o antioxidante que melhor desempenho mostrou no retardamento da oxidação do biodiesel e a técnica que melhor permitiu analisar a acção dos antioxidantes foi o UVVIS. Os resultados obtidos por FTIR não se mostraram tão conclusivos. Para caracterizar o envelhecimento do biodiesel não estabilizado e estabilizado utilizou-se também a cromatografia gasosa (CG) para quantificar a percentagem de ésteres metílicos presentes nas diferentes amostras no inicio e no fim do processo de oxidação. O biodiesel envelheceu mais rapidamente para temperaturas mais elevadas e comprovou-se que o antioxidante que melhor estabiliza o biodiesel é o PG.
