Spacing abstraction: capitalism, law and the metropolis

In considering contemporary accounts of the interrelations of economic, legal and urban forms of social relations in the emergence of a global capitalist modernity, this paper argues that politico-juridical imaginaries of new forms of transnational universality have tended to be limited by virtue of both an anachronistic recourse to spatial models of the polis and a failure to confront the ineliminability of abstraction to any idea of global social interconnectivity. In such terms, it argues, Lefebvre’s famous call for a ‘right to the city’ needs to be reinscribed as a properly modern right to the metropolis; one that would allow us to conceive of the possibility of new kinds of relation between individual and collective subjectivity and the development of abstract social forms.

Esta dissertação pretende analisar a obra literária de Emma Donoghue, The Sealed Letter (2008), considerando-a uma apropriação neovitoriana de um caso escandaloso verídico, sujeito a notícias sensacionalistas, tendo como plano de fundo a condição feminina na Grã-Bretanha oitocentista. Visa também realçar diversas questões relacionadas com o papel da mulher e a sua influência tanto na sociedade vitoriana como na sociedade actual. Analisando textos críticos da era vitoriana, para além da obra principal desta dissertação, procura-se também tentar entender de que modo a apropriação neovitoriana da condição feminina produz e mantém padrões culturais no século XXI.

A resident within one of the counties in your region has expressed some concern regarding potential adverse health effects from dust and material that may be found within foundry slag that has been used as a replacement for road rock. This consultation includes a comparison of nuisance issues from dust generated from a road constructed of foundry slag and dust generated from a road constructed from typical road rock. This consultation also includes a discussion of the potential health effects of exposure of heavy metals from incidental ingestion of foundry slag.
