The paper comprehensively analyzes the distortions of a circular wedge prism with 400 mm diameter in a scanner by method of optical-mechanical-thermal integrating analysis. The structure and intensity of the prism assembly is verified and checked, and the surface deformations of the prism under gravity load, as well as the thermo-elastic distortions of the prism, are analyzed in detail and evaluated, which is finally contrasted with the measured values of Zygo Mark interferometer. The results show: the maximal distortion of the prism assembly is 10 nm magnitude and the maximal stress is 0.441 Mpa, which has much tolerance to the precision requirement of structure and the admissible stress of material; the influence of heat effect on the surface deformations of prism is proved to be far greater than the influence of gravity load, so some strict temperature-controlled measures are to be considered when the scanner is used. A diffuse interface phase field model is proposed for the unified analysis of diffusive and displacive phase transitions under nonisothermal conditions. Two order parameters are used for the description of the phenomena: one is related to the solute mass fraction and the other to the strain. The model governing equations come from the balance of linear momentum, the solute mass balance (which will lead to the Cahn-Hilliard equation) and the balance of internal energy. Thermodynamic restrictions allow to define constitutive relations for the thermodynamic forces and for the mechanical and chemical dissipations. Numerical tests carried out at different values of the initial temperature show that the model is able to describe the main features of both the displacive and the diffusive phase transitions, as well as their effect on the temperature. © 2010, Advanced Engineering Solutions.

A custom designed microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) micro-hotplate, capable of operating at high temperatures (up to 700 C), was used to thermo-optically characterize fluorescent temperature-sensitive nanosensors. The nanosensors, 550 nm in diameter, are composed of temperature-sensitive rhodamine B (RhB) fluorophore which was conjugated to an inert silica sol-gel matrix. Temperature-sensitive nanosensors were dispersed and dried across the surface of the MEMS micro-hotplate, which was mounted in the slide holder of a fluorescence confocal microscope. Through electrical control of the MEMS micro-hotplate, temperature induced changes in fluorescence intensity of the nanosensors was measured over a wide temperature range. The fluorescence response of all nanosensors dispersed across the surface of the MEMS device was found to decrease in an exponential manner by 94%, when the temperature was increased from 25 C to 145 C. The fluorescence response of all dispersed nanosensors across the whole surface of the MEMS device and individual nanosensors, using line profile analysis, were not statistically different (p < 0.05). The MEMS device used for this study could prove to be a reliable, low cost, low power and high temperature micro-hotplate for the thermo-optical characterisation of sub-micron sized particles. The temperature-sensitive nanosensors could find potential application in the measurement of temperature in biological and micro-electrical systems. The Authors. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. In this paper, we develop a linear technique that predicts how the stability of a thermo-acoustic system changes due to the action of a generic passive feedback device or a generic change in the base state. From this, one can calculate the passive device or base state change that most stabilizes the system. This theoretical framework, based on adjoint equations, is applied to two types of Rijke tube. The first contains an electrically-heated hot wire and the second contains a diffusion flame. Both heat sources are assumed to be compact so that the acoustic and heat release models can be decoupled. We find that the most effective passive control device is an adiabatic mesh placed at the downstream end of the Rijke tube. We also investigate the effects of a second hot wire and a local variation of the cross-sectional area but find that both affect the frequency more than the growth rate. This application of adjoint sensitivity analysis opens up new possibilities for the passive control of thermo-acoustic oscillations. For example, the influence of base state changes can be combined with other constraints, such as that the total heat release rate remains constant, in order to show how an unstable thermo-acoustic system should be changed in order to make it stable. The ion-exchange equilibrium of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to an anion exchanger, DEAE Spherodex M, has been studied by batch adsorption experiments at pH values ranging from 5.26 to 7.6 and ionic strengths from 10 to 117.1 mmol/l. Using the unadjustable adsorption equilibrium parameters obtained from batch experiments, the applicability of the steric mass-action (SMA) model was analyzed for describing protein ion-exchange equilibrium in different buffer systems. The parametric sensitivity analysis was performed by perturbing each of the model parameters, while holding the rest constant. The simulation results showed that, at high salt concentrations or low pHs close to the isoelectric point of the protein, the precision of the model prediction decreased. Parametric sensitivity analysis showed that the characteristic charge and protein steric factor had the largest effects on ion-exchange equilibrium, while the effect of equilibrium constant was about 70%-95% smaller than those of characteristic charge and steric factor under all conditions investigated. The SMA model with the relationship between the adjusted characteristic charge and the salt concentration can well predict the protein adsorption isotherms in a wide pH range from 5.84 to 7.6. It is considered that the SMA model could be further improved by taking into account the effect of salt concentration on the intermolecular interactions of proteins. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. AIN powders were prepared by in-situ synthesis technique. It is a reaction of binary molten Al-Mg alloys with highly pure nitrogen. It was confirmed through thermodynamics calculation that Mg element in Al-Mg alloys can decrease oxygen content in the reacting system. Thus, nitridation reaction can be performed to form AIN. Moreover, an analysis of kinetics shows that the nitridation reaction of Al-Mg alloys can be accelerated and transferred rapidly with the increment of Mg content.

The isothermal and non-isothermal melt-crystallization kinetics of nylon 1212 were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Primary and secondary crystallization behaviors were analysed based on different approaches. The results obtained suggested that primary crystallization under isothermal conditions involves three-dimensional spherulite growth initiated by athermal nucleation, while under non-isothermal conditions, the mechanism of primary crystallization is more complex. Secondary crystallization displays a lower-dimensional crystal growth, both in the isothermal and non-isothermal processes. The crystallite morphology of nylon 1212, isothermally crystallized at various temperatures, was observed by polarized optical microscopy. The activation energies of crystallization under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions were also calculated based on different approaches.

Isothermal crystallization kinetics and morphology of the poly(L-lactide) block in poly(L-lactide)poly(ethylene glycol) diblock copolymers were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM), respectively. The results were compared with that of the PLLA homopolymer. The introduction of the PEG block accelerated the crystallization rate of the PLLA block and promoted to form ring-banded spherulites. The analysis of isothermal crystallization kinetics has shown that the PLLA homopolymer accorded with the Avrami equation. But the PLLA block of the diblock copolymers deviated from the Avrami equation, which resulted from increasing of the crystallization rate and occurring of the second crystallization process. The equilibrium melting temperature (T,,) of the PLLA block fell with its molecular weight decreasing. The conditions to obtain more regular ring-banded spherulites were below: the sample was the PLLA block of LA(5) EG(5); the crystallization temperature was about from 95 degrees C to 100 degrees C, which almost corresponded to regime II.

The crystallization kinetics and the development of lamellar structure during the isothermal crystallization of poly (epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and real-time synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SR-SAXS) techniques, respectively. The Avrami analysis was performed to obtain the kinetics parameters. The value of Avrami index, n, is about 3, demonstrating a three-dimensional spherulitic growth on heterogeneous nuclei in the process of isothermal crystallization. The activation energy and the surface free energy of chain folding for isothermal crystallization were determined according to the Arrhenius equation and Hoffman-Lauritzen theory, respectively. In the process of nonisothermal crystallization of PCL, the value of Avrami index, n, is about 4, which demonstrates a three-dimensional spherulitic growth on homogeneous nuclei. In addition, lamellar parameters were obtained from the analysis of SR-SAXS data.

Macrokinetic models, namly the modified Avrami, Ozawa and Zibicki models, were applied to study the non-isothermal melt crystallization process of PET/PEN/DBS blends by DSC measurement. The modified Avrami model was found to describe the experimental data fairly well. With the cooling rates in the range from 5 to 20 K/min, Ozawa model could be well used to describe the early stages of crystallization. However, Ozawa model did not fit the polymer blends during the late stages of crystallization, because it ignored the influence of secondary crystallization. The crystallization ability of the blends decreases with increasing the DBS content from analysis by using Ziabicki kinetic model, which is similar to the results based on calculation of the effective energy barrier of the blends.

Isothermal crystallization behavior of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The Avrami analysis can be used successfully to describe the isothermal crystallization kinetics of PHBV, which indicates that the Avrami exponent n = 3 is good for all the temperatures investigated. The spherulitic growth rate, G, was determined by POM. The result shows that the G has a maximum value at about 353 K. Using the equilibrium melting temperature (448 K) determined by the Flory equation for melting point depression together with U-* = 1500 cal mol(-1), T-infinity = 30 K and T-g = 278 K, the nucleation parameter K-g was determined, which was found to be 3.14+/-0.07 x 10(5) (K-2), lower than that for pure PHB. The surface-free energy sigma = 2.55 x 10(-2) J m(-2) and sigma(e) = 2.70+/-0.06 x 10-2 J m(-2) were estimated and the work of chain-folding (q = 12.5+/-0.2 kJ mol(-1)) was derived from sigma(e), and found to be lower than that for PHB. This implies that the chains of PHBV are more flexible than that of PHB.

Analysis of the isothermal and nonisothermal transitions of hexagonal crystal formation from the melt (transition 1) and of monoclinic crystal formation from hexagonal crystals (transition 2) for trans-1,4-polybutadiene (TPBD) was carefully carried out by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Isothermal transitions I and 2 are described by Avrami exponents (n) of approximate to1, whereas nonisothermal transitions I and 2 are described by n approximate to 4. These different eta values indicate that different crystallization mechanisms took place for different crystallization driving forces under isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization. The Ozawa equation was also used to analyze the nonisothermal crystallization data. For transition I at lower temperature, the Ozawa equation fits the data well; however, at higher temperature, there is an inflection that shifts to lower crystallinity with increasing temperature. Inflections are also observed with the Ozawa analysis for transition 2. Furthermore, the crystallinities at the turning points are almost in the same range as those determined by Avrami analysis for nonisothermal transitions I and 2, which suggests that the Ozawa analysis inflections are due to secondary crystallization. However, TEM revealed no morphology discrepancy between the TPBD hexagonal crystals formed from melt by isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization.

The analysis of the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data was based upon particle characteristic function, one-dimensional electron-density correlation function and particle distribution function. The microstructure of nylon 66 with different degrees of crystallinity was studied by means of X-ray scattering method. The radius of gyration R-g, the Porod radius R-p, the thickness of crystalline region L-c the thickness of non-crystalline region L-n, the thickness of interphase region d(tr), the long period L, the semiaxises of particles (a, a, b), the distribution of the particle sizes and the scattering invariant were calculated. The results indicate that there was a significant interphase region between the crystalline region and the non-crystalline region. and its content (W-t,W-x) should not be neglected in comparison with that of crystalline region W-c,W-x. The morphology of nylon 66 prepared by isothermal crystallization at a high temperature was mainly a lamellar structure, while the spherical crystals dominated in the quenched sample. The size of the particles in the quenched sample was smaller than that of those in the isothermally crystallized sample. and the distribution of the particle sizes in the isothermally crystallized sample was wider.

The crystallization behavior of neat PPS and PPS in blends with PMR-POI prepared by melt mixing were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that POI was an effective nucleation agent of the crystallization for PPS. The enthalpy of crystallization of PPS in the blends increased compared with that of neat PPS. During isothermal crystallization from melt, the dependence of relative degree of crystallinity on time was described by the Avrami equation. It has been shown that the addition of POI causes an increase in the overall crystallization rate of PPS; it also changed the mechanism of nucleation of the PHB crystals from homogeneous nucleation to heterogeneous nucleation. The equilibrium melting temperature of PPS and PPS/POI blends were determined. The analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories shows that the increase in crystallization rate of PPS in the composite is due to the decrease in surface energy of the extremity surface.

The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and maleated PHB with different graft degree were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Avrami analysis indicates that the introduction of maleic anhydride results in the decrease in the overall crystallization rate of PHB, but does not affect its nucleation mechanism and geometry of crystal growth. The activation energy of the overall crystallization process increases with the increase in graft degree. The phenomenon of multiple melting endotherms is observed, which results from melting and recrystallization during the DSC heating run.
