In this study, fluid precursor formulations for subcutaneous injection and in situ formation of hexagonal phase gels upon water absorption were developed as a strategy to sustain the release of naltrexone, a drug used for treatment of drug addiction. Precursor formulations were obtained by combining BRIJ 97 with propylene glycol (PG, 5-70%, w/w). To study the phase behavior of these formulations, water was added at 10-90% (w/w), and the resulting systems were characterized by polarized light microscopy. Two precursor formulations containing BRIJ:PG at 95:5 (w/w, referred to as BRIJ-95) and at 80:20 (w/w, referred to as BRIJ-80) were chosen. Naltrexone was dissolved at 1% or suspended at 5% (w/w). Precursor formulations were transformed into hexagonal phases when water content exceeded 20%. Water uptake followed second-order kinetics, and after 2-4 h all precursor formulations were transformed into hexagonal phases. Drug release was prolonged by the precursor formulations (compared to a drug solution in PBS), and followed pseudo-first order kinetics regardless of naltrexone concentration. The release from BRIJ-80 was significantly higher than that from BRIJ-95 after 48 h. The relative safety of the precursor formulations was assessed in cultured fibroblasts. Even though BRIJ-95 was more cytotoxic than BRIJ-80, both precursor formulations were significantly less cytotoxic than sodium lauryl sulfate (considered moderate-to-severe irritant) at the same concentration (up to 50 mu g/mL). We introduce a time-dependent projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation to describe a partially condensed homogeneous Bose gas, and find that this equation will evolve randomized initial wave functions to equilibrium. We compare our numerical data to the predictions of a gapless, second order theory of Bose-Einstein condensation [S. A. Morgan, J. Phys. B 33, 3847 (2000)], and find that we can determine a temperature when the theory is valid. As the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is nonperturbative, we expect that it can describe the correct thermal behavior of a Bose gas as long as all relevant modes are highly occupied. Our method could be applied to other boson fields.

A technique to simulate the grand canonical ensembles of interacting Bose gases is presented. Results are generated for many temperatures by averaging over energy-weighted stochastic paths, each corresponding to a solution of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with phase noise. The stochastic gauge method used relies on an off-diagonal coherent-state expansion, thus taking into account all quantum correlations. As an example, the second-order spatial correlation function and momentum distribution for an interacting 1D Bose gas are calculated.

A reversible linear master equation model is presented for pressure- and temperature-dependent bimolecular reactions proceeding via multiple long-lived intermediates. This kinetic treatment, which applies when the reactions are measured under pseudo-first-order conditions, facilitates accurate and efficient simulation of the time dependence of the populations of reactants, intermediate species and products. Detailed exploratory calculations have been carried out to demonstrate the capabilities of the approach, with applications to the bimolecular association reaction C3H6 + H reversible arrow C3H7 and the bimolecular chemical activation reaction C2H2 +(CH2)-C-1--> C3H3+H. The efficiency of the method can be dramatically enhanced through use of a diffusion approximation to the master equation, and a methodology for exploiting the sparse structure of the resulting rate matrix is established.

OctVCE is a cartesian cell CFD code produced especially for numerical simulations of shock and blast wave interactions with complex geometries, in particular, from explosions. Virtual Cell Embedding (VCE) was chosen as its cartesian cell kernel for its simplicity and sufficiency for practical engineering design problems. The code uses a finite-volume formulation of the unsteady Euler equations with a second order explicit Runge-Kutta Godonov (MUSCL) scheme. Gradients are calculated using a least-squares method with a minmod limiter. Flux solvers used are AUSM, AUSMDV and EFM. No fluid-structure coupling or chemical reactions are allowed, but gas models can be perfect gas and JWL or JWLB for the explosive products. This report also describes the code’s ‘octree’ mesh adaptive capability and point-inclusion query procedures for the VCE geometry engine. Finally, some space will also be devoted to describing code parallelization using the shared-memory OpenMP paradigm. The user manual to the code is to be found in the companion report 2007/13.

Four adducts of triphenylphosphine oxide with aromatic carboxylic acids have been synthesized and tested for second-order non-linear optical properties. These were with N-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (I), indole-2-carboxylic acid (2), 3-dimethylaminobenzoic acid (3), and thiophen-2-carboxylic acid (4). Compound (1) produced clear, colourless crystals (space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) With a 9.892(1), b 14.033(1), c 15.305(1) Angstrom, Z 4) which allowed the structure to be determined by X-ray diffraction.

This research reports the findings of two studies conducted to measure and then investigate differences between delinquent, nondelinquent, and at-risk youths' orientations towards reputation enhancement. In the first study, concerning item selection and scale development, the factor structure and content validity of a potential Reputation Enhancement Scale were tested by examining the item responses of the scale completed by 230 high-school students. In the second study, the scale was validated by comparing the item responses of 80 delinquent, 90 at-risk, and 90 nondelinquent adolescents with the responses of the original students. The instrument was found to be reliable (alphas from .64 to .92), indicating that the factors are dependable across different samples, and the coefficients of congruence were sufficiently high to investigate meaningful group differences. Three second-order factors (Conforming Reputation, Nonconforming Reputation, Self-presentation) were derived from the 15 first-order factors. Although multivariate analyses revealed significant differences between the reputational orientations of delinquent, at-risk, and nondelinquent participants, the self-presentation second-order factor did not differentiate the three groups.

Optical constants of AlSb, GaSb, and InSb are modeled in the 1-6 eV spectral range. We employ an extension of Adachi's model of the optical constants of semiconductors. The model takes into account transitions at E-0, E-0 + Delta(0), E-1, and E-1 + Delta(1) critical points, as well as higher-lying transitions which are modeled with three damped harmonic oscillators. We do not consider indirect transitions contribution, since it represents a second-order perturbation and its strength should be low. Also, we do not take into account excitonic effects at E-1, E-1 + Delta(1) critical points, since we model the room temperature data. In spite of fewer contributions to the dielectric function compared to previous calculations involving Adachi's model, our calculations show significantly improved agreement with the experimental data. This is due to the two main distinguishing features of calculations presented here: use of adjustable line broadening instead of the conventional Lorentzian one, and employment of a global optimization routine for model parameter determination.

The aim of the present research was to provide school psychologists with valid instruments with which to assess the goals and reputations of young children. This was achieved by ascertaining whether the factor structures and the second-order factor models of the high school versions of the Importance of Goals (Carroll, et al., 1997) and Reputation Enhancement Scales (Carroll, et al., 1999) could be replicated with a primary school sample. Eight hundred and eighty-six 10 to 12 year old children were administered modified versions of the two scales, which were combined and renamed the Children's Activity Questionnaire. For the two scales, the factor structure proved replicable and reliable with the primary school sample. A comparison between the factor loadings of the primary school and the high school samples using the coefficient of congruence procedure demonstrated similarity indicating that the scales are replicable and able to be used with a younger primary school sample. Structural equation modelling indicated that the second-order factor structure of the Importance of Goals Scale was acceptable but this was not the case for the second-order factor structure of the Reputation Enhancement Scale.

We develop a test of evolutionary change that incorporates a null hypothesis of homogeneity, which encompasses time invariance in the variance and autocovariance structure of residuals from estimated econometric relationships. The test framework is based on examining whether shifts in spectral decomposition between two frames of data are significant. Rejection of the null hypothesis will point not only to weak nonstationarity but to shifts in the structure of the second-order moments of the limiting distribution of the random process. This would indicate that the second-order properties of any underlying attractor set has changed in a statistically significant way, pointing to the presence of evolutionary change. A demonstration of the test's applicability to a real-world macroeconomic problem is accomplished by applying the test to the Australian Building Society Deposits (ABSD) model.

The goal of this paper is to study the global existence of small data solutions to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear wave equation u(tt) - a(t)(2) Delta u = u(t)(2) - a(t)(2)vertical bar del u vertical bar(2). In particular we are interested in statements for the 1D case. Most previous investigations on tide-induced watertable fluctuations in coastal aquifers have been based on one-dimensional models that describe the processes in the cross-shore direction alone, assuming negligible along-shore variability. A recent study proposed a two-dimensional approximation for tide-induced watertable fluctuations that took into account coastline variations. Here, we further develop this approximation in two ways, by extending the approximation to second order and by taking into account capillary effects. Our results demonstrate that both effects can markedly influence watertable fluctuations. In particular, with the first-order approximation, the local damping rate of the tidal signal could be subject to sizable errors.

The olfactory nervous system is responsible for the detection of odors. Primary sensory olfactory neurons are located in a neuroepithelial sheet lining the nasal cavity. The axons from these neurons converge on to discrete loci or glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. Each glomerulus consists of the termination of thousands of primary axons on the dendrites of second-order olfactory neurons. What are the molecular mechanisms which guide growing olfactory axons to select sites in the olfactory bulb? We have shown that subpopulations of these axons differentially express cell surface carbohydrates and that these different subpopulations target and terminate in particular regions of the olfactory bulb. Interestingly, the olfactory neurons and glial components in the olfactory pathway between the nose and brain express galectin-1. By using in vitro assays of neurite outgrowth we found that both galectin-1 and it's ligands were capable of specifically stimulating neurite elongation. Examination of the olfactory system in galectin-1 null mutants revealed that a subpopulation of axons failed to navigate to their target site in the olfactory bulb. This is the first phenotypic effect observed in galectin-1 null mutants and indicates that galectin-1 has a role in the growth and/or guidance of a subpopulation of axons in the olfactory system during development.

(E)-N-Hexadecyl-4-[2-(4-octadecyloxynaphthyl) ethenyl] quinolinium bromide, which has a wide-bodied chromophore and terminal n-alkyl groups, adopts a U-shape when spread at the air-water interface but a stretched conformation when compressed to ca. 35 mN m(-1). The high-pressure phase has a narrow stability range prior to collapse but may be extended from 40 to 60 mN m(-1) by co-spreading the dye in a 1 : 1 ratio with docosanoic acid. The mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film has a monolayer thickness of 4.6 +/- 0.2 nm which decreases to 2.5 +/- 0.1 nm layer(-1) in the bulk, the reduction arising from an interdigitating layer arrangement, both top and bottom. It is the first example of LB-Lego(R) and, in addition, represents the only fully interdigitating structure with non-centrosymmetrically aligned chromophores. They are tilted 38 degrees from the substrate normal. The second-harmonic intensity increases quadratically with the number of layers, i.e. as I-(N)(2 omega) = (I(1)N2)-N-2 omega, with a second-order susceptibility of chi ((2))(zzz) = 30 pm V-1 at 1064 nm for refractive indices of n(omega) = 1.55 and n(2 omega) = 1.73, d = 2.5 nm layer(-1) and phi = 38 degrees. Angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of these films provide no evidence of the bromide counterion, which suggests that it is replaced by OH 2 or HCO3-, which occur naturally in the aqueous subphase, or C21H43COO- from the co-deposited fatty acid. This probably applies to all cationic dyes deposited by the LB technique.

Primary olfactory neurons are located in the olfactory neuroepithelium lining the nasal cavity. Their axons converge and form glomeruli with the dendrites of second-order neurons in the olfactory bulb. The molecular basis of primary olfactory axon guidance, targeting and subsequent arborisation is largely unknown. In this study we examined the spatio-temporal expression of the Eph receptor EphB2 and its ligands, ephrin-B1 and ephrin-B2, during development of the rat primary olfactory system. Unlike in other regions of the nervous system where receptor and ligand expression patterns are usually non-overlapping, EphB2, ephrin-B1 and ephrin-B2 were all expressed by primary and second-order olfactory neurons. In the embryonic animal we found that these three proteins had distinct and different expression patterns. EphB2 was first expressed at E18.5 by the perikarya of primary olfactory neurons. In contrast, ephrin-B1 was expressed from E13.5 and was localised to the axons of these cells up to E18.5 but was then restricted to the perikarya. Ephrin-B2, however, was expressed by olfactory ensheathing cells. EphB2, ephrin-B1 and ephrin-B2 were also expressed in the prenatal olfactory bulb and were restricted to the perikarya of mitral cells. In the post-natal olfactory bulb there was a shift in the localisation of both EphB2 and ephrin-B1 to the dendritic arborisations of mitral cells. The dynamic and tightly regulated spatio-temporal expression patterns of EphB2, ephrin-B1 and ephrin-B2 by specific olfactory cell populations suggest that these molecules have the potential to regulate important developmental events in the olfactory system.
