Cyclocondensations of aromatic diamines with 1,1'-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium salts afford doubly or quadruply charged, macrocyclic, N,N'-diarylbipyridinium cations. These are tolerant of a wide range of acids, bases, and nucleophiles, although they appear to undergo reversible, one-electron reduction by tertiary amines. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrates the presence of a macrocycle conformation in which the 4,4'-bipyridinium and 4,4'-biphenylenedisulfonyl residues are suitably spaced and aligned for complexation with pi-donor arenes, and NMR studies in solution indeed confirm binding to 1,5-bis[hydroxy(ethoxy)ethoxy]naphthalene.

Asymmetric synthesis of densely functionalized bicyclic frameworks for entry into bacillariolides I/III and ent-bacillariolide II is reported. The key features are ring-closing metathesis of a pair of diastereomerically related dienes obtained through a stereodivergent route from a R-(+)-glyceraldehyde derivative, transformation of a nonstereoselective cyclopentene ester enolate alkylation process to a completely stereoselective one through alkylation of a bulky ester enolate with a bulky electrophile, and a remote silyloxymethyl group directed epoxidation.

A series of fourteen novel pyrrole monomers substituted at the 3-position with aliphatic and aromatic crown-ether moieties have been synthesised in good yield and characterised extensively. Several of these compounds were electropolymerised successfully in acetonitrile, using both potentiostatic and galvanostatic modes and the electrochemical properties of those systems were studied via cyclic voltammetry in aqueous and organic media. Novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives revealed reversible redox couples in LiClO4/CH3CN (0.1 M). The morphology of these novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives was characterised by scanning electron microscopy. These polymers exhibited an open porous structure and half the charge was required when compared to polypyrrole to afford films of equal thickness. The mass change during polymerisation was followed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurement, and the rate of polymer growth was found to be nonlinear when compared to polypyrrole. Multiple parallel synthesis and evaluation have been combined in order to identify new nitrogen heterocycles for the partitioning of minor actinides(III) such as americium(III) from lanthanides such as europium(Ill). An array of triazine-containing molecules was made using multiple parallel syntheses from diketones and amide hydrazides. An excess of each of the resulting purified reagents was dissolved in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane containing 2-bromodecanoic acid, and equilibrated with an aqueous solution containing the radiotracers Eu-152 and Am-241 in nitric acid ([Eu] + [Am] < 400 nanomol dm(-3)). Gamma counting of the organic and aqueous phases led to the identification of several new reagents for the selective extraction of americium(III). In particular, 6-(2-pyridyl)-2-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazaphenyl)pyridines were found to be effective reagents for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III), (SFAm/Eu was ca. 30 in [HNO3] = 0.013 mol/L).

The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

A new strategy for the synthesis of sesquiterpenoids of the furanoeremophilane family was developed in which the tricyclic nucleus was assembled in an A + C -> A - C -> A - B - C sequence. The A - C connection was made via coupling of a cyclohexenylmethyl bromide with a stannylfuran under "ligandless" Stille conditions, and the key cyclization which closed ring B was accomplished with complete stereocontrol by intramolecular formylation of a 2-silylfuran in the presence of trimethylsilyl triflate. This route was used to complete the first total syntheses of the furanoeremophilane 6-hydroxyeuryopsin and the eremophilenolides toluccanolide A and toluccanolide C, as well as a formal synthesis of 1,10-epoxy-6-hydroxyeuryopsin.

Installing hydroxymethyl and hydroxyethyl substitutions at C-4 through vinylation and hydroboration-oxidation reactions of the C-4 bis-hydroxymethyl derivative of D-glucose based substrate, and inserting heteroatoms thereafter permitted formation of N-, O-, or S-heterocycles leading to [4,5]or [5,5]-spirocycles and a bicyclo[3.3.0]octane product. Some of the spirocycles were converted to spironucleosides under Vorbruggen glycosidation reaction conditions. Similarly, the bicyclic product was elaborated to the corresponding bicyclic nucleoside as well as an unexpected tricyclic nucleoside.

A general approach for the synthesis of fused cyclic systems containing medium-sized rings (7-9) has been developed. The key steps involve a diastereoface-selective Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles 4a-d attached to a furanosugar with cyclopentadiene and ring opening (ROM)-ring closing metathesis (RCM) of the resulting norbornene derivatives 10a-d and 11a-d. Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles 4a-d with cyclopentadiene in the absence of a catalyst produced 10a-d as the major product arising through addition of the diene to the unhindered Si-face. The most interesting and new aspect of the Diels-Alder reaction of these dienophiles is the accessibility of the Re-face that was blocked by the alkenyl chains under Lewis acid catalysis producing the diastereoisomers 11a-d exclusively. The reversal of facial selectivity from an uncatalyzed reaction to a catalyzed one is unprecedented. The observed stereochemical dichotomy is attributed to rotation of the enone moiety along the or bond linking the sugar moiety during formation of the chelate 13. This makes the Re-face of the enone moiety in 4a-d unhindered. Diels-Alder reaction of the carbocyclic analogue 15 under Lewis acid catalysis produced a 1: 1 mixture of the adducts 16 and 17 confirming the participation of sugar ring oxygen in chelate formation. Finally ROM-RCM of 10a-d and 11a-d with Grubbs' catalyst afforded the cis-syn-cis and cis-anti-cis bicyclo-annulated sugars 21a-d and 23a-d, respectively, containing 7-9 membered rings.

The effect of hyperbranched macromolecular architectures (dendrimers) upon chirality has received significant attention in recent years in the light of the proposal of amplification of chirality. In particular, several studies have been carried out on the chiroptical properties of dendrimers that contain a chiral core and achiral branches in order to determine if the chirality of the central core can be transmitted to the distal. region of the macromolecule. In addition to interest of a pure academic nature, the presence of such chiral conformational order would be extremely useful in the development of asymmetric catalysts. In this paper, a novel class of chiral dendrimers is described - these perfect hyperbranched macromolecules have been prepared by a convergent route by the coupling of a chiral central core based upon tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and poly(aromatic amide ester) dendritic branches. The chiral properties of these dendrimers have been investigated by detailed optical rotation studies and circular dichroism analysis; the results of these studies are described herein. The solid-phase synthesis of a cyclic peptide containing the 21-residue epitope found in the A-B loop of the Cepsilon3 domain of human immunoglobulin E has been carried out. The key macrocyclization step to form the 65-membered ring is achieved in similar to15% yield via an "on-resin" Sonogashira coupling reaction which concomitantly installs a diphenylacetylene amino acid conformational constraint within the loop.

The development of new methods for the efficient synthesis of aziridines has been of considerable interest to researchers for more than 60 years, but no single method has yet emerged as uniformly applicable, especially for asymmetric synthesis of chiral aziridines. One method which has been intensely examined and expanded of late involves the nucleophilic addition to imines by anions bearing a-leaving groups; by analogy with the glycidate epoxide synthesis, these processes are often described as "aza-Darzens reactions". Carbohydrate-derived substrates having (i) C-5 nitrone and C-3-O-allyl, (ii) C-4 vinyl and a C-3-O-tethered nitrone, and (iii) C-5 nitrone and C-4-allyloxymethyl generated tetracyclic isoxazolidinooxepane/-pyrart ring systems upon intramolecular nitrone cycloaddition reactions. Deprotection of the 1,2acetonides of these derivatives followed by introduction of uracil base via Vorbruggen reaction condition and cleavage of the isooxazolidine rings as well as of benzyl groups by transfer hydrogenolysis yielded an oxepane ring containing blicyclic and spirocyclic nucleosides. The corresponding oxepane based nucleoside analogues were prepared by cleavage of isoxazolidine and furanose rings, coupling of the generated amino functiontalities with 5-amino-4,6-dichloropyrimidine, cyclization to purine rings, and finally aminolysis.

Nanometer metal particles of tailored size (3-5 nm) and composition prepared via inverse microemulsion were encapsulated by ultrathin coatings (<2.5 nm) of inorganic porous aerogels covered with surface -OH groups. These composite materials formed metastable colloids in solvent(s), and the organic surfactant molecules were subsequently removed without leading to aggregation (the ethanolic colloid solution was shown to be stable against flocculation for at least weeks). We demonstrate that the totally inorganic-based composite colloids, after the removal of surfactant, can be anchored to conventional solid supports (gamma-alumina, carbons) upon mixing. Application of a high temperature resulted in the formation of strong covalent linkages between the colloids and the support because of the condensation of surface groups at the interface. Detailed characterizations (X-ray diffraction (XRD), pore analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO chemisorption) and catalytic testing (butane combustion) showed that there was no significant metal aggregation from the fine metal particles individually coated with porous aerogel oxide. Most of these metal sites on the coated nanoparticles with and without support are fully accessible by small molecules hence giving extremely active metal catalysts. Thus, the product and technology described may be suitable to synthesize these precursor entities of defined metal sizes (as inks) for wash coat/impregnation applications in catalysis. The advantages of developing inorganic nanocomposite chemical precursors are also discussed.

The novel cryptand in/out-3, containing two tripyrrolemethane units briged by three 1,3- diisopropylidenbenzene arms was readily synthesized by a convergent three-step synthesis. It binds fluoride by inclusion with excellent selectivity with respect to a number of other tested anions. The structure of the free receptor and that of its fluoride complex were investigated in solution by NMR spectroscopy. The solid state X-ray structure of the free cryptand 3 was also determined.

Reaction of the dinuclear complex [{Rh(CO)(2)}(2) (mu-Cl)(2)]with an alpha-diimine ligand, 1,2- bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl) imino] acenaphthene (iPr(2)Ph-bian), produces square-planar [RhCl(CO)(iPr(2)Ph-bian)]. For the first time, 2: 1 and 1: 1 alpha-diimine/dimer reactions yielded the same product. The rigidity of iPr(2)Ph-bian together with its flexible electronic properties and steric requirements of the 2,6-diisopropyl substituents on the benzene rings allow rapid closure of a chelate bond and replacement of a CO ligand instead of chloride. A resonance Raman study of [RhCl(CO)(iPr(2)Ph-bian)] has revealed a predominant Rh-to-bian charge transfer (MLCT) character of electronic transitions in the visible spectral region. The stabilisation of [RhCl(CO)(iPr(2)Ph-bian)] in lower oxidation states by the pi-acceptor iPr(2)Ph-bian ligand was investigated in situ by UV-VIS, IR and EPR spectroelectrochemistry at variable temperatures. The construction of the novel UV-VIS-NIR-IR low-temperature OTTLE cell used in these studies is described in the last part of the paper.
