The Quaternary Active Faults Database of Iberia (QAFI) is an initiative lead by the Institute of Geology and Mines of Spain (IGME) for building a public repository of scientific data regarding faults having documented activity during the last 2.59 Ma (Quaternary). QAFI also addresses a need to transfer geologic knowledge to practitioners of seismic hazard and risk in Iberia by identifying and characterizing seismogenic fault-sources. QAFI is populated by the information freely provided by more than 40 Earth science researchers, storing to date a total of 262 records. In this article we describe the development and evolution of the database, as well as its internal architecture. Aditionally, a first global analysis of the data is provided with a special focus on length and slip-rate fault parameters. Finally, the database completeness and the internal consistency of the data are discussed. Even though QAFI v.2.0 is the most current resource for calculating fault-related seismic hazard in Iberia, the database is still incomplete and requires further review.

Web 2.0 services such as social bookmarking allow users to manage and share the links they find interesting, adding their own tags for describingthem. This is especially interesting in the field of open educational resources, asdelicious is a simple way to bridge the institutional point of view (i.e. learningobject repositories) with the individual one (i.e. personal collections), thuspromoting the discovering and sharing of such resources by other users. In this paper we propose a methodology for analyzing such tags in order to discover hidden semantics (i.e. taxonomies and vocabularies) that can be used toimprove descriptions of learning objects and make learning object repositories more visible and discoverable. We propose the use of a simple statistical analysis tool such as principal component analysis to discover which tags createclusters that can be semantically interpreted. We will compare the obtained results with a collection of resources related to open educational resources, in order to better understand the real needs of people searching for open educational resources.

L'entorn ha de tenir un disseny agradable per a l'usuari final i ha de permetre obtenir les dades del repositori que se li indiquin. Molecular docking softwares are one of the important tools of modern drug development pipelines. The promising achievements of the last 10 years emphasize the need for further improvement, as reflected by several recent publications (Leach et al., J Med Chem 2006, 49, 5851; Warren et al., J Med Chem 2006, 49, 5912). Our initial approach, EADock, showed a good performance in reproducing the experimental binding modes for a set of 37 different ligand-protein complexes (Grosdidier et al., Proteins 2007, 67, 1010). This article presents recent improvements regarding the scoring and sampling aspects over the initial implementation, as well as a new seeding procedure based on the detection of cavities, opening the door to blind docking with EADock. These enhancements were validated on 260 complexes taken from the high quality Ligand Protein Database [LPDB, (Roche et al., J Med Chem 2001, 44, 3592)]. Two issues were identified: first, the quality of the initial structures cannot be assumed and a manual inspection and/or a search in the literature are likely to be required to achieve the best performance. Second the description of interactions involving metal ions still has to be improved. Nonetheless, a remarkable success rate of 65% was achieved for a large scale blind docking assay, when considering only the top ranked binding mode and a success threshold of 2 A RMSD to the crystal structure. When looking at the five-top ranked binding modes, the success rate increases up to 76%. In a standard local docking assay, success rates of 75 and 83% were obtained, considering only the top ranked binding mode, or the five top binding modes, respectively.

Understanding how wikis are used to support collaborative learning is an important concern for researchers and teachers. Adopting a discourse analytic approach, this paper attempts to understand the teaching processes when a wiki is embedded in a science project in primary education to foster collaborative learning. Through studying interaction between the teacher and students, our findings identify ways in which the teacher prompts collaborative learning but also shed light on the difficulties for the teacher in supporting student collective collaboration. It is argued that technological wiki features supporting collaborative learning can only be realized if teacher talk and pedagogy are aligned with the characteristics of wiki collaborative work: the freedom of students to organize and participate by themselves, creating dialogic space and promoting student participation. We argue that a dialogic approach for examining interaction can be used to help to design a more effective pedagogic approach in the use of wikis in education, to shift into Web 2.0 learning paradigm and to equip learners with the competences they need to participate in knowledge co-construction.

Estamos viviendo desde la entrada al siglo XXI una explosión acelerada de las tecnologías, de las TIC’s, las redes sociales en internet, etc. que están modificando enormemente los hábitos de consumo y los principios de la sociedad. A todo ello, hay que añadir la situación de crisis económica general que existe en el mundo, y que afecta enormemente a las empresas y al tejido empresarial de un país. En este entorno, las compañías deben basar sus estrategias en estar cerca del cliente y ser capaces de visualizar necesidades no cubiertas. Sobre todo, las empresas deben transformarse para crear organizaciones humanizadas capaces de generar innovación y adaptarse rápidamente a los nuevos entornos que van surgiendo. Para poder hacer frente a esta nueva situación las empresas deben poner en valor el talento de todas las personas que forman parte de la organización. El activo más importante y escaso, para poder desarrollar estrategias triunfadoras. El trabajo pretende resumir la situación actual para las empresas, recoger todas las ideas y nuevas tendencias que existen en cuanto a la gestión del talento, la organización del trabajo y la creación de estructuras que permitan innovar. A lo largo del trabajo se van desarrollando las diferentes herramientas, sistemas y disciplinas que están a disposición de las empresas para crear un entorno que favorezca la innovación, como camino para mantenerse en el mercado global.

This work presents new, efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation methods for statistical analysis in various modelling applications. When using MCMC methods, the model is simulated repeatedly to explore the probability distribution describing the uncertainties in model parameters and predictions. In adaptive MCMC methods based on the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, the proposal distribution needed by the algorithm learns from the target distribution as the simulation proceeds. Adaptive MCMC methods have been subject of intensive research lately, as they open a way for essentially easier use of the methodology. The lack of user-friendly computer programs has been a main obstacle for wider acceptance of the methods. This work provides two new adaptive MCMC methods: DRAM and AARJ. The DRAM method has been built especially to work in high dimensional and non-linear problems. The AARJ method is an extension to DRAM for model selection problems, where the mathematical formulation of the model is uncertain and we want simultaneously to fit several different models to the same observations. The methods were developed while keeping in mind the needs of modelling applications typical in environmental sciences. The development work has been pursued while working with several application projects. The applications presented in this work are: a winter time oxygen concentration model for Lake Tuusulanjärvi and adaptive control of the aerator; a nutrition model for Lake Pyhäjärvi and lake management planning; validation of the algorithms of the GOMOS ozone remote sensing instrument on board the Envisat satellite of European Space Agency and the study of the effects of aerosol model selection on the GOMOS algorithm.

La intenció del present estudi es esbrinar si el propòsit institucional d'integrar les TICs i desenvolupar les competències digitals entre l'alumnat s'assoleix a l'escola primària, si la formació del professorat es suficient per aquests objectius i si l'ús està integrat en el procés d'ensenyament i aprenentatge. També volem saber si a la pràctica les TICs queden relegades només a un nivell individual, deixant en segon pla l'ús col·lectiu dins l'aula amb l'alumnat, i l'ús queda restringit sobre tot a la consulta i no incorpora la producció de material digital.Per tant, el nostre objectiu és conèixer el grau d'utilització de les TICs, en particular les que donen pas i fomenten la cultura participativa (eines 2.0) del professorat de Primària, el tipus d'ús i el coneixement sobre l'alumnat destinatari de l'aprenentatge. Per tal d'obtenir una descripció de la utilització d'aquest col·lectiu de les TICs s'ha creat un qüestionari que intentarà respondre als nostres objectius.

The aim of the present study was to determine 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD), a metabolite of n-hexane, by gas chromatography/flame ionization detection in 31 workers exposed to n-hexane after two types of sample pretreatment, i.e., with (total 2,5-HD) and without (free 2,5-HD) acid hydrolysis. The mean urinary 2,5-HD was 0.52 mg/L (free) and 2.88 mg/L (total), this difference being significant (Student t-test, p < 0.05). The differences in the results according to the sample treatment support the need to modify the current Brazilian legislation, which proposes the analysis of 2,5-HD without indicating whether it is the free or total metabolite.

Polygala cyparissias is a plant widespread in Southern Latin America. Recently, we demonstrated the gastroprotective activity of the extract, as well as for one of the isolated metabolites-1,7-dihydroxy-2,3-methylenedioxyxanthone (MDX). In this study, a HPLC method for the quantification of MDX was validated. The HPLC method was linear (0.5-24 µg mL-1 of MDX) with good accuracy, precision and robustness. The content of MDX in the extracts from whole and different parts of the plant ranged from 0 to 5.4 mg g-1 and the gastroprotective index ranged from 72.1 to 99.1%. Thus, the method might be used for the standardization of the extracts based on the MDX marker.

This Master’s thesis studies the possibilities that social media tools can bring to help knowledge management in software development companies. It will introduce the most popular tools of social media and their usage possibilities in companies, not forgetting the possible downsides. One relevant aspect in this study is to investigate the possibilities of social media to help converting existing tacit knowledge into explicit. The purpose of the work is to create a proposal of social media utilization for a mid-sized software company, which has not utilized social media tools before. To be able to create the proposal, employees of the company are interviewed and a survey is executed to analyze the current situation. In addition a pilot project for trying out new social media tools is executed. The final result of this thesis introduces a tailored solution for the target company to start utilizing social media in its documentation and knowledge sharing processes. This new solution consists of multiple individual suggestions that are categorized and prioritized based on the significance and benefit that they bring to the company.

Tässä työssä keskitytään web-pohjaisiin sisällönhallintajärjestelmiin. Teoriaosassa käydään läpi aiheeseen liittyviä tekniikoita, web-ohjelmistotekniikan erityispiirteitä ja sisällönhallinnan käsitettä ja sen järjestelmiä. Teoriapuolella huomataan, kuinka laajaa osaa liiketoimintaprosesseista sisällönhallinta koskettaa. Siksi sen hahmottaminen on vaikeaa ja sitä voi lähestyä monesta eri suunnasta. Erilaisia järjestelmiä on lukuisia ja ne soveltuvat erilaisiin tilanteisiin. Käytännön työnä toteutetaan Codens Oy:n uuden sisällönhallinnan kehitystyö. Tavoitteena on saada huomattavia parannuksia vanhaan järjestelmään. Erityisesti kiinnitetään huomiota sivupohjasysteemiin ja käyttöliittymään, johon tuodaan mukaan web2.0:n tarjoamia uusia työkaluja. Järjestelmään saatiin useita parannuksia, mutta sen kehittämistä on vielä jatkettava, ennen kuin siitä saadaan kaupallisesti valmis tuote.
