It is well known that during alloy solidification, convection currents close to the so-lidification front have an influence on the structure of dendrites, the local solute concentration, the pattern of solid segregation, and eventually the microstructure of the casting and hence its mechanical properties. Controlled stirring of the melt in continuous casting or in ingot solidification is thought to have a beneficial effect. Free convection currents occur naturally due to temperature differences in the melt and for any given configuration, their strength is a function of the degree of superheat present. A more controlled forced convection current can be induced using electro-magnetic stirring. The authors have applied their Control-Volume based MHD method [1, 2] to the problem of tin solidification in an annular crucible with a water-cooled inner wall and a resistance heated outer one, for both free and forced convection situations and for various degrees of superheat. This problem was studied experimentally by Vives and Perry [3] who obtained temperature measurements, front positions and maps of electro-magnetic body force for a range of superheat values. The results of the mathematical model are compared critically against the experimental ones, in order to validate the model and also to demonstrate the usefulness of the coupled solution technique followed, as a predictive tool and a design aid. Cotoneaster pannosus (Rosaceae), an ornamental shrub native to China, is reported for the first time in Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain). Data on demography and accompanying species for the new locality are provided, in addition to a chrorological update at nation level.

New records of vascular plants from Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve and surroundings (Spain, Madrid province) are provided. It is noteworthy the presence of atlantic flora in this continental area and the different shrubby communities in different sectors with different litology: in areas with gneiss they are dominated by leguminous genisteae; where it is schistous, shale or quartzite they are heathlands.

Electroless plating of binary Ni-P, ternary Ni-Sn-P and Ni-W-P, and quaternary Ni-W-Sn-P alloy coatings was carried out in alkalicitrate baths. After the plating, several kinds of test were carried out to determine the improvement in the characteristics and properties due to the additional elements as well as to study the change in behaviour when heat treatment was applied to these coatings. The coatings were subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis where it was found that all the coatings were amorphous. Interesting surface morphology features were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Addition of a third element improved the hardness.

A UVB specific dosimeter is described comprising: a redox dye (2,6-dichloroindophenol, DCIP), a semiconductor ( tin(IV) oxide, SnO2) and a sacrificial electron donor ( glycerol) dispersed in a polymer ( hydroxy ethyl cellulose, HEC) film. The dosimeter is blue in the absence of UVB light but rapidly loses colour on exposure to UVB light. The spectral characteristics of a typical UVB dosimeter film and the mechanism by which the colour change occurs are detailed. DCIP UVB dosimeter films exhibit a response that is related to the irradiance level and duration of UVB exposure, the level of SnO2 present and to a lesser extent the level of glycerol present. The response of the dosimeter appears to be independent of dye concentration and film thickness. Furthermore, DCIP UVB dosimeter films respond to solar simulated light, exhibiting a colour loss that can be simply related to the Minimal Erythemal Dose (MED) exposure for skin type II. As a consequence, such indicators have potential for measuring solar radiation exposure and providing an early warning of erythema for most Caucasian skin (i.e. skin type II).
